I'm shocked at how FAST THIS GUITAR Plays! (sub $500 semi-hollow body)

  • What might look like an old-fashioned, vintage style guitar at first glance, turns out to be an absolute shredder! But... what really makes a guitar fast, and why is this one fast? Sure, a nice ebony fretboard, Grover tuners, and a mahogany set neck are always nice features... but what sets this AIO KSA90 (from All In One guitars) apart from a "slow" guitar?

This is the best and possibly only explanation I’ve heard of what a “fast neck” actually means and why a lower profile guitar helps your fingers move faster. Makes SO much sense now!

You could have said this in a more simplistic manner but the host of this particular podcast is always descriptive it's one of his strengths. It could have been said differently like this.
Action is important to speed neck shape is important to speed speed is reliant on the player However there are ways to play fast without moving fast. Those are other ways to adapt improvise in overcome. You may not be fast I may not be fast. A 9-year-old might be fast but doesn't know where to play yet. But he will by the time he's 10. The ability to play fast is overrated in a lot of ways. In my opinion during the sessions between Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan Albert King told Stevie Ray Vaughan there's lots of fast pickers out there but they ain't got no soul. You got them both he told Stevie Ray Vaughan speed and soul. And we look back finally at Stevie Ray Vaughan we realize he was very special. Because he did not lose his musicality to play fast. Also he did not shred on the guitar. Not that he couldn't but he chose a different sound. A bluesier sound. The sound that brought Eric Clapton to America years ago. had that revolution of New blues artist out of England not happened we wouldn't be where we are today. Remember music is a journey enjoy it have fun Play yourself the way yourself plays and let it come through as emotion in your guitar because that's more important than a thousand notes in 10 seconds. IMHO 😊

Go pick up any Wylde model. CHONKEY neck, and the 59 is my go-to.
His iconic LPs were Norlins with big maple necks, which gets both vintage and shred guys sniffing their corks.
      Zakk is fast, no doubt.
Your hand shape will determine the comfort/speed. My first "real guitar" was an 80s RG550, and after getting my first Gibby, I couldn't stand Wizard necks anymore - no matter what the Ibanez ad copy says.

  • @ironmikezero

I have that very same guitar (KSA90 in Black Burst); I agree it's pretty amazing. both in looks and play-ability. I was surprised at the inherent sustain when played acoustically, so I took a closer look inside--it's a lot closer to being a hollow body than a semi-hollow, maybe a kind of hybrid? Use a small flexible penlight & mirror through the f-holes and you'll see what I mean. There's more dedicated sound chamber than I expected. However they modified the design--it sure works. I also took readings on the pups: Bridge 8.64, Neck 7.88, & Both 4.129. I tried it on a reissue '65 Twin reverb--the cleans were just incredible (got neighbors so I had to lighten up).
The only downside, for those of us who like hard cases, is that AIO doesn't have an appropriate case in stock. So a case sourced from another vendor for an ES-339 style guitar would likely offer a good fit. I opted for a Gretsch Streamliner case @ about $130 retail (G2655T / 0992655000) which fit perfectly. My wife loves the size and the light weight; so now I guess I gotta get another one. Oh, well . . .

I have this model and two other AIO guitars (WLP750T and W400) - all three are unbelievably high quality and value far above the price point. I own close to 40 guitars, and honestly I find myself playing the AIOs as much if not more than my $2000+ ones. I’d bet money that even experienced players would have difficulty telling the difference between the AIOs and their “big name” counterparts - they really are that good.

These types of guitars are really good at laying down a thicker sound. I have used both solid body and semi hollows and although LP's are known for sustain, you can get outrageous sustain with a semi hollow body. With the right volume level, I could get a solid sustain that seemed infinite, like holding down a key on an organ. Feedback was a factor, but since the amp was mic'd, I rarely had issues. Of course I wasn't playing stadiums either.

King, Freddie King, Little Milton Campbell, Otis Rush and many other Rock guitarist in the 60's like Bill Halley, Chuck Berry, Boz Scaggs, Alvin Lee, Eric Clapton, and many more.

HiYa Max ! Hope you're having a great day . Nothing beats another Guitar Demo Video !! LoL ! You've got this down to a Science now .
Anyway , I love this Guitar ! The only thing about it that I wouldn't be able to change myself is the Frets . I decided several months ago that my next Guitar would have Xtra Jumbo S . S . Frets . And I can do any type of repair except for Replacing Frets . The Luthier I always go to for Nut Replacement and a Neck Repair won't do Stainless Steel Frets . But this Guitar is definitely a beauty ! I think I'm going to go backwards thru your Catalog of Videos to track down some of the Guitars you Demo'd that had SS Frets . And probably give you some more " Likes " in the process . So that will be good for both of us .
Btw , Great Playing Max !! I knew you played but I didn't know you are a
    SHREDDER !!

The neatest thing about your demo of this AIO guitar, Max, isn’t only that you can shred on it ( though that definitely rocks). It’s more about something that I have written in previous comments, that we need more examples of players playing hard rock or metal on semi-hollow/thinline guitars. (We’ve mainly had Ted Nugent, Alvin Lee, Malcolm Young and Brian May.) That’s why I enjoy playing my Yamaha SA-2000 (which is shaped like a 335 but has the same neck profile as this one) for some of my hard rock riffs.

GUESS WHAT>>>>Pickups on this guitar apparently are made by IYV (Guitars). My experience is....Change pickups immediately to Guitar Fetish
brand (Example). Change the pickups AND install GuitarFetish control system along with new humbuckers (example: Vintage 59's). The IYV's
have too much distortion for me. I want lows / mids / highs that sing out and make me smile ( LARGE SMILE ! ). Other than that I think you
mentioned before the they are HIGH LINE IYV's. Great looking guitars with XCELLENT craftsmanship. I personally own several IYV's so I know

Snapped up a parts strat with a thin D profile , big Frets , unbendable forward or back , sooooo , I went for it .
Scalloped it as it was strong as all ...
I do not care to play my others anymore
Like SRV said , big Frets and distance of string from board , are what gets his tone
And the notes get louder as you bend
    Scalloped is the shite man
Not a Yingay depth , but a Blackmore like scallop job

Hi Max, I use to have a Gibson ES 335 Years ago, but the width of the body was a little to big for me. I waited for many years before Gibson / Epiphone came out with the ES 339 which I now own. However it weighs about 8 1/2 pounds. That's what an ES 335 weighs. The ES 339 was suppose to be smaller and weigh less. So if the AIO KSA90 does weigh under 7 pounds I would get it.

On the playing metal on semi hollow, there is a live video by industrial metal band Ministry. Seeing this particular guitar, Chuck Berry, Alex Lifeson crossed to mind. The next were Steve Howe and Ted Nugent all though they use single cut semi hollow. I have heard several times the claim that thicker strings lean easier to distorted sound and that with the help of the thickness, give more power to the sound due to interacting with the pick ups' magnetic field.

    • @lancegranum1643
      @lancegranum1643 4 місяці тому

Howel played in ES 175. Much bigger than this guitar much more airspace inside the box as it's more than 4 in thick. I have a 1982 ES 175D This particular little guitar is a lot more aligned with the style and size of the current semi-hollow body PRS. My roommate and young protege has one of those hollow body PRSs like this. Another friend just purchased a raw kit of this same body style online for about a hundred bucks. The benefit of buying that particular kit is you can toss away all the junk and then build it the way you want it kind of how AIO does their own thing. They use their own pickups their own electrics their own stuff and you can do so for a lot less money. The issue I have is this is going to devalue all my classic guitars.
The era has changed. We now can get good woodworking from any country in the world what you need to look at is how many pieces the body are made from how many pieces the neck are made from and how tight the pocket is for the neck to fit in. Other than that you can simply take the time to finish the work that they started correctly along the lines of the quality of a PRS or Anderson guitar. high grade finishes high grade everything. Some of the new stuff coming out of Indonesia China and other countries such as South Korea about to get into the guitar market could be quite interesting. To me it smells like a slow long miserable death for the established corporations who have bought up all the competition prior to this Yes I'm speaking of Gibson and fender. This may be the beginning of their demise. Guitars that look and sound great for a 1/10 of the money that a high level Gibson will sell for. If you don't believe me go look up what a real 1959 Gibson Les Paul just sold for on reverb. I know it was as much or more than I spent for my first house. Insanity. The average player will never be able to tell the difference in the two guitars if the work is right the setup is right the guitar plays easy and fast. You can blindfold someone and tell them they're playing a classic Les Paul if the guitar they're playing is any last Paul that they can't just reach up and touch the headstock to tell if it's a Gibson will be interesting. However these other guitars more like a super strap with a double cutaway even this hollow body here semi-hollow body more resembles a hot strat setup except for the bridge being a toomatic. I would like to play with a lot of different pick up configurations in here. But I'm not putting a set of those $1,000 Gibson PAFs in here because I think there are pickups that sound better for a lot less money. After all the most important implement in your tone chain is not your guitar it is not your amplifier It is your speaker cabinet and your speakers. If your speaker suck you cannot make a great guitar sound good if your speaker suck you cannot make a poor guitar sound good if your speaker suck nothing sounds good. It's time to move the focus to where it really belongs The most drastic tonal changes belong in the drivers in your cabinet if you don't believe me go check out Glenn's review up in Canada on speaker cabinets pretty amazing stuff. I've been playing with that for years but never did the A/b test that he did. Very well worth knowing. Yes this is the beginning of the end for the elite guitar companies. What a ride it was!

Not the jumbo frets like they claimed, but I’m not complaining about a ridiculously cheap 250$ primo guitar

I love speed in small doses. I care more about the riff these days but still need to pull it out of the bag of tricks when you want. That amp is ridiculous, that’s a Rev amp ?

I am sure that the one they sent "you" for review is fantastic, but that doesn't necessarily mean the average buyer is going to get one that's set up to that standard.

I like how well they polished it. You can almost see the other side of the room just in the reflection. 🤣
But no, it's a fantastic looking and sounding guitar. If I wasn't trying to curb my guitar enthusiasm and limit myself to 1 or 2 a year after going crazy and buying 8 in a single year, I'd definitely snatch this one up.

Some players can play fast regardless of size of neck. Alvin Lee was shredding on a Gibson ES355 at Woodstock 10 to 15 years before the term 'shredding' was invented. Al Di Meola and *John McLaughlin (*Inner Mounting Flame album) were playing very fast on 1950's Les Pauls in the early 70's. On the subject of Al Di Meola - someone commented below about fast playing not having soul. Di Meola in an interview or article gave his thoughts about this idea of lots of fast notes not having feeling and 'saying it all with one note' - he wrote - "tell that to a flamenco player!

Sounds friking great actually. But i almost thought you were playing through digital because is doesn't seem to have the typical overtly hollow or semi body sound. Edit" per the neck thickness thing and hand grip etc. Something i contemplated for decades. Depends on your hand. Like longer hands but shorter fingers. some people have short hands but long fingers, some have long hands and fingers. that neck by your measurements is basically middle ground. which is usually acceptable for most. ultra thin necks like 90's Japan pro jacksons feel like they are as thin as a piece of plywood and feel very wide and uncomfortable to me. basically it's not a given. i can play a v neck and deal with it better than an ultra thin neck. but again, that neck is not ultra thin, just not as thick as a vintage style neck that would be typical on an older style guitar like that. what you are saying hold true, but, it's not absolute. you can get used to anything, but in your journey, you might be used to something, try something else and go, oh this is much better. Also @ 1:30 that was pretty cool. over some time watching, it's enjoyable to see progress in actual playing. you;re noticeably getting better 📯

Wasn't Jazz the shred of its day?

    • @lancegranum1643

Absolutely jazz musicians came out of the beatnik movement. With the reputation of smoking drinking drugging and misogynistic chasing of women. In other words sex drugs and Jazz. Later the name for the devil's music was changed to blues, then eventually rock and roll, and heavy metal.,
The stigma of new music has always had some connotation from the Christian church in America as well as the Islamic church in America and the Hebrew church in America. All of these particular churches are extremely conservative including the Church of Christ which allows no instruments in their buildings for worship. Only the voice.
Where will this all lead there will be a new music that is the devil's music eventually. According to those that don't understand no one is worthy of heaven.
Yes there are several books on that In fact enjoy them look them up listen to them or read them and have a good time understanding why this phenomenon happens but jazz was definitely a leading edge music coming out of the orchestra era. The big band era followed and the transition was to Jazz. such things as Benny Goodman and others paved the way for jazzy guitar players including those we love so much today like Larry Carlton Joyce cooling Samantha fish and other great jazzy blues players. We even had Jeff golub who played bluesy jazz and rock and roll with the likes of people like rod Stewart. The music forms are very similar. With a possible exception of being country music which is folk music the originations of folk music were considered more wholesome. Probably because more white people followed those particular things and they had the power of the press. Black music tend to be more blues-oriented sad songs grown out of plantation life changed up by the greats including Robert Johnson and others. As for me when I'm ready to sit down and listen to a great set of jazz it's always Larry Carlton Joyce cooling or someone similar. I find the music relaxing. But 150 years ago it was the devil's music for sure thanks for the thread I enjoy this one I find it interesting that each new genre is treated with the same disdain as the previous It must be from hell must be the devil's music. I don't buy that for a second music feeds my soul. It doesn't save it
