In translation this means, he charges out of the dark, up to 80ft, then gets his full attack(1d8+7 & 2x2d6+12). Also he gets an additional attack with his feet for 2d6+7. Oh, and if both claws hit, he deals 4d6+13 damage immediately. Then you may be stunned, if a claw hit you and also he can just immediately start grappling your potentially unconscious body. The book claims he is CR 8 ...
I do miss the weirdness of previous editions' monsters. It feels like there are way too many monsters in 5e that amount to a bag of hit points with basic attacks that just deal damage.
One of my favorite weird monster from third edition was a graveyard that got up and started looking for more bodies. It was a colossal construct, and I can't remember what it's called.
For anyone wondering: the Living Spells that Jacob is talking about aren't from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes. They're in Eberron: Rising from the Last War and are (in that setting) created as a side-effect of casting spells in certain parts of the Mournland. They are _very_ cool and you should check them out; I once made a dungeon that became a problem after everything went to shit because a wizard become controlled by a Living Geas he accidentally created.
I remember flicking through the Eberron Campaign Setting (the 3.5 version of RFtLW for those who don't know) and coming across Living Cloudkill and thought that was dope. My memory is fuzzy, but I think there was also a statblock for a Living Finger of Death.
Maybe use threats based around that concept as well, like "I'm gonna make dice outta your teeth" or "I'll make a wind chime outta your ribcage"? Or maybe take bones to make trinkets, baubles, scrimshaw & and weapon adornments? The possibilities are almost endless.

I love the bonedrinker and use it whenever possible. They deal ability score damage to Con, and if you hit zero you become the afformentioned functionally dead flesh sack. They're a variant of ghoul made by hobgoblin necromancers, and one of the funnest things to do is pair them with regular ghouls, who then tear into the flesh sack.
Colossal + dragons are no joke. They are literally the embodiment of irl, "legends say these mountains are just a dragon that fell asleep a long time ago and plants and soil just covered it up." Just compare the old 3.5 Colossal Red Dragon "mini" to a medium mini. Then realize that dragon is on the bottom range of the colossal size category.
@derekstein6193 that figure was actually on the big end of Colossal/Colossal+, the rules for the miniatures game that came with it said that the base was larger than Colossal is supposed to be if you planned to use it for an RPG session. Still wish they'd made a Gargantuan Green Dragon, I had the other 3.
I think there's definitely room for these kinds of designs to get updates - come on let's get another monster book WoTC! I think there's a lot less save or suck mechanics in 5e, but you can easily turn like bone drinkers and plague balls into staged saves. I also like the chad goats.

What I love most about 3.5 is that as the Monster Manual editions progressed, the monsters became more and more just amorphous blobs, just like Strongbad trying to create his own creature and after a few tries all he can come up with Da Huuuuuuuuudge, which is basically a glob of yellow snot. XD
I actually liked the Goat. I'd use the goats for some humor in an adventure. You could make them talk. Not everything has to be cool and scary. When she talked about these f#ckrs getting together, that was pretty funny. Definitely could pull out a side adventure using those goats with some of the facts she put forth about them.

I have to admit, I love all these monsters. 3.5 was my "era", and I have a real soft spot for that editions MM2, MM3, Fiend Folio and Monsters of Faerûn. Anybody else love Fihyrs and Grells? :D
I was lucky enough to have a relative who played during the 80s and I inherited a first edition AD&D monster manual, there are many gems inside of that thing (especially in the art Department) but the creature that was in there and stood out to me so profoundly dumb yet awesome was the Dragonne, it's a dragon but it has the head of a lion and a roar attack instead of a breath attack. It's simplistic and weird; and I've home-brewed one for 5E and thrown it at several groups.

Can I just say that the idea of a rejkar being shot straight upwards from the shockwave it caused by relaxing it's muscles is perhaps the funniest mental image I've ever had.
Favorite 3.5/3rd Edition Monsters: Ash Rat, Bloodbloater Swarm, Bone Ooze, Flesh Jelly, Gravecrawler, and the Hullathion. So basically five gross horror monsters and a spicy rodent. Edition: I have updated all of these from 3rd to 5e to use in my games along with a few other faves from editions passed, it's fun to do.
Ah, a fellow monster seeker. I looked at the enemy guides to video games every time I was at a bookstore, and my mind was blown when I found what I think must have been 4e monster manuals.
"Go back into old books and see what you find" is great advice. DnD has been running for decades and not all of it will get updated to 5e for you, but there's tons of great shit just waiting in old books waiting for a little touch up. Bring an old classic back for a new run or even find a new variant rule that seems interesting.
We like playing in Eberron and keep referring to the additional supplements for it in 3.5 that will likely never make it over. Lot's of little things that seem trivial but help with the world. The most recent thing we looked up was lightning rail prices and distances between towns.

It would be HILARIOUS if you did a video where you look back into even older edtions of D&D (BECMI or AD&D 2e for example) and you try to wrap your head around THAC0, strange rules and lore etc... We see many videos of grumpy oldschool players that "review" D&D 5e angrily, but as someone who love both oldschool and newschool D&D, I would love to see the opposite
THAC0 is just the DC of your attack roll. (With your enemy's armour class as a bonus). It may sound confusing, but it is so so much better than trying to look up your attack roll on a table printed in your class section.

I currently run a D&D Basic inspired game and I ditched THAC0 in favor of a system from modern D&D because the math would be way too confusing for my players in the first sessions, and it doesn't add anything to the game

Damn, the other day I needed an Abyssal something to be like a parental figure to an orphan Tiefling I created. I don't know barely any lore, I just see cool stuff and come up with a story as I go, and the first thing I saw that could communicate and could possibly raise this Tiefling was a creature called Bodak. 3 days ago I did this. Favorite 3.5/3rd Edition Monsters: Ash Rat, Bloodbloater Swarm, Bone Ooze, Flesh Jelly, Gravecrawler, and the Hullathion. So basically five gross horror monsters and a spicy rodent.
Edition: I have updated all of these from 3rd to 5e to use in my games along with a few other faves from editions passed, it's fun to do.
3.5 monster manual = my favorite book growing up
Ah, a fellow monster seeker. I looked at the enemy guides to video games every time I was at a bookstore, and my mind was blown when I found what I think must have been 4e monster manuals.
"Go back into old books and see what you find" is great advice. DnD has been running for decades and not all of it will get updated to 5e for you, but there's tons of great shit just waiting in old books waiting for a little touch up. Bring an old classic back for a new run or even find a new variant rule that seems interesting.
We like playing in Eberron and keep referring to the additional supplements for it in 3.5 that will likely never make it over. Lot's of little things that seem trivial but help with the world. The most recent thing we looked up was lightning rail prices and distances between towns.

It would be HILARIOUS if you did a video where you look back into even older edtions of D&D (BECMI or AD&D 2e for example) and you try to wrap your head around THAC0, strange rules and lore etc... We see many videos of grumpy oldschool players that "review" D&D 5e angrily, but as someone who love both oldschool and newschool D&D, I would love to see the opposite
THAC0 is just the DC of your attack roll. (With your enemy's armour class as a bonus).
It may sound confusing, but it is so so much better than trying to look up your attack roll on a table printed in your class section.
@@michaelkenner3289 yeah i learned the system while playing baldur's gate 1, and i understand it, but i think it is still way more simple to use attack modifiers and ascending AC. I currently run a D&D Basic inspired game and I ditched THAC0 in favor of a system from modern D&D because the math would be way too confusing for my players in the first sessions, and it doesn't add anything to the game

Damn, the other day I needed an Abyssal something to be like a parental figure to an orphan Tiefling I created. I don't know barely any lore, I just see cool stuff and come up with a story as I go, and the first thing I saw that could communicate and could possibly raise this Tiefling was a creature called Bodak. 3 days ago I did this.
