- For my final of the five videos (almost) in a row to celebrate my five years on booktube it is the BIG one… My THIRTY favourite books that I have read in the half a decade since I started this channel. I wonder if you will guess which my favourites are, try at the start of the video and then see how right or wrong you are, as this list surprised me often. I even changed it up as I went along. Also please let me know your thoughts on these, the list and all that bookish shenanigans. Let’s have a right old chat about it in the comments below. #FavouriteBooks #BookTube #WrapUp

it is your 'rambling', as you call it, that makes your channel so refreshing because we get to see how excited you are about each read!!! 6 mins into the vid and already loving the titles you have chosen! xx congrats on 5 years on yt
Thank you Mae. That’s so kind of you to say. Rambling/tangents/wanging on. Call it what you will. I got very excited about this selection. Sooooo many good books.
@@SavidgeReads looking back on everything you've read since starting yt must have been a very emotional/exhausting experience, glad you have brought us along with you x :) x
I'm also here for the waffling. 🧇🧇🧇
Thoroughly enjoyable, and I will once more be poor because of you. Appreciated. xoxo
Whoops. Hahaha. Ta for watching Duck.
Well my TBR just blew up...
Whoops. Hahaha.
Ah, 5 years of wonderful books, gorgeous jumpers, lovely Simon and fantastic guests (including the brilliant Louise!) My shelves are bursting with Savidge recommendations and my bank balance is crying over the spending sprees, but I wouldn’t want it any other way! Thanks Simon so much for everything and here’s to many more years of SavidgeReads! Congratulations and Best Wishes 💕🎉💕🎉💕
Awww thank you. So pleased that you’ve enjoyed it and been part of it and here’s to at least five more years. Lol.
Yay ! So pleased Tin Man was number one in your charts 🎉 Thanks to your recommendations I have now read all 3 of Sarah Winman books & so looking forward to next Thursday & receiving my copy of Still Life . 😍
Picked 3 books in each section to read 9 in total, hated with abundance 3 out of 30, and cheered extra hard for 7. I always love your queer,Australian and historical recommendations, and this is my top three most watched channel on UA-cam, which says a bloody lot.
Phenomenal!!!! Lol. I wish I was your neighbor. We would have so much fun talking books and hanging out. Lol. You are a gem!! Love the videos.
"giant beaver...don't laugh."
Could not stop laughing for at least three and a half minutes. I was fine til you told me I couldn't laugh.
Just stumbled on your page and this is only my second video of yours (first was the short list with your Mom, which I loved) and I am a new subscriber and fan! I could listen to you talk about books all day! Just downloaded When I Hit You. Thanks for all the great recs!
I have read your top 3 books + I am an Island. I read all 4 books because of your raving reviews and I love them all 💜 thank you for that Simon 🥰
Oh this was a joy. Always fun to talk about lots and lots of lovely books.
Sat here with my goodreads open adding away haha. And so many amazing memories of reading these books myself over the past few years! 💐
Also, needless to say, could not agree with you more on Tin Man. A favourite book of all time x
This has been a great series of videos, Simon. You have put so much work into them. Also thanks for all the book recommendations, many of which I have followed and loved over the last few years
Congratulations on 5 years! My wallet screams every time I watch one of your videos. I don’t think Ive read a book you’ve recommended that I didn’t enjoy.
So many great sounding books on this list. I also love your descriptions and your use of the word 'phenomenal'.
I can’t remember what’s on this list now but glad you found some great sounding ones in there 😉
here for the worst witch reference. of all these i think your description of the Argonauts made me keen to get my hands on it!
Such a great video! Like you said, my top books change by the day but some of them wouldn't have read but for you so thank you Simon ❤
Thanks for that Simon. You are phenomenal such a part of my reading life. This is a most interesting choice.
I stumbled upon your channel and immediately subscribed. Don’t ever limit yourself to 20 minutes! Enjoy your descriptions and it’s so easy to see your love of books and people. Bravo!
Great to watch.. I loved tin man too and girl woman other is amazing and I’m not surprised by your top ten 😍
Really enjoying all of your celebration vids, thank you! I’ve read a few of these and loved every one, I’ve just got The Trauma Cleaner and Tin Man from the library on your recommendation so looking forward to those next, and now got several more added to my TBR 😀😀😀
I’ve read four of the books on this list, all at your recommendation, and loved them all. I have another four patiently sitting on my TBR, which I’m looking forward to. Thanks for all the fabulous tips.
I absolutely loved Tin Man, Stay With Me and The Prophets. Added more to my books to be read. Wonderful videos and I really enjoy seeing your videos.
Loved hearing you talk about all these books, Simon. Such an impossible task. TinMan is on my tbr shelf; guess I will have to move it up and read it sooner rather than later. Hamnet is sooooo beautiful. Congrats on five years!
Thank you Christie. I am sure the list would change a little tomorrow or the day after but I’m very chuffed with this list and the comments here and in the live chat when it happened. Lovely stuff.
So many of these look fabulous to me. Thank you for that video.
A pleasure.
Tin Man is one of my all time favourites. Just small and perfectly formed.
I have to say I discovered your channel during lockdown and you have truly re-ignited my love affair with reading. I had got into the habit of just reading what was easy and you have totally changed that for me.
I never miss your videos now, and if there’s nothing new I trawl your back catalogue!
I think you're phenomenal! This couldn't have come at a better time for me since I've been in a bit of a reading slump. It's also phenomenal how much money I spent on books after watching it.
Fittingly on theme I've read five of these and I think three of those would make my own 'top' list. Happiness and particularly Stay With Me were absolutely brilliant and I read Tin Man just this year and I was amazed how much emotional punch was packed into so few pages. I'm rubbish at keeping track of where I've heard about books but I know there are many I wouldn't have picked up if I hadn't heard you singing their praises. Thanks for the recommendations and here's to the next five years!
Ah, Tin Man! So wonderful, such a beautiful book. Achingly beautiful. I so enjoyed seeing your list. I’ve also loved Girl, Woman, Other, so pleased to see that rank so highly. From your list I’ve also read How We Fight For Our Lives, The Girl With The Pearl Earring, The Bass Rock, and The Death of Vivek Oji, and support the inclusion of all of these of the list. So many terrific choices. I can’t wait to explore your other favorites.
I’ve only read 9 of these! Must get to work! Loved this video and chatting with you, Simon. It’s a fantastic list! ❤️
Yes, what on earth are you playing at. Hahahaha. Thanks for joining in. It was lovely.
@@SavidgeReads Still Life just arrived today!
The Five was one of my favorite books of last year! I was so angry at how misrepresented his victims have been. And even if they were sex workers, so what? Unpacking all of the misogyny was a LOT.
It was a lot and yet I felt Hallie unpacks it so brilliantly and without it feeling like a lecture etc. She just gives those women the voices and the stories/backdrops they’ve been denied.
You've some fantastic favourite books here, and the top three makes perfect sense when considering the last five years. Similarly, I expected Jess Kidd and From the Wreck to appear here because I associate them with you. This is quite a celebration of your time on Booktube and looks to have been a rather splendid journey, if these books are anything to go by.
So lovely to see Tin Man at number 1! I loved this video ❤️ bet it was soooo hard to choose!
I've read 6 of these and have 5 on my tbr.
I have a few others that are from the readers days that you recommended, e.g. a song for Issy Bradley, and Gillespie & I ☺️
Thank you for all your wonderful content, and for persuading me to join booktube a couple of years ago - one of the decisions that's bought me so so much joy and friendship x
Another great video, sorry to have missed the live chat. I've read 10 off your list and my favourites would have to be Hamnet, Girl, Woman Other, The Bass Rock and A Keeper in that order. I own 7 and must get to The Prophets and Stay With Me very soon. So many more books to add to my wish list and reserve at the library. I must get hold of Flames as I loved The Rain Heron.
Some of my favourite books in here, so definitely want to check out the ones I haven't read.
Also giant beaver
❤️❤️❤️ Hamnet, such an amazing book ❤️
Well, apparently I need, need, need to put Akwake Emezi on my read right now list! So many amazing recommendations.
I just finished my first Jess Kidd (Things in Jars) and absolutely agree with you; she’s a new favorite for sure 🥰
Isn't this a treat for a Sunday morning!
Loved this video - thank you! I think I need to re-read Hamnet as I raced through it so quickly I want to go slower and take it in. I think I was perhaps surprised to not see any Daphers? 🧐 But as ever have added a ton of books to my ‘to read’ list!x
Did you notice all the sparkles around you in this video, either someone is watching over you or its sparkly dust! I prefer the first x
I was wondering what those were too. More of Savidge magic?
Thanks for all your amazing choices. I now have more to add to the ever increasing list. Loved the few Australian ones I have not read. Have you seen the movie of Picnic at Hanging Rock? great costumes.
I’ve read 6 of these and completely agree they are all wonderful: The Bus on Thursday, the Argonauts, Flames, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and The Trauma Cleaner. Lots of these on my TBR too so very excited! 📚
Can’t count! And How we fight for our lives 🥰
Just brilliant! I have to say that Essex Serpent and Hamnet have probably left the most lasting impression on me of all of these--but so glad to see Happiness by Aminatta Forna and Bass Rock by Evie Wyld here too! Thank you so much for all that you share with us! Just put a hold at the library on Tin Man. . . .
Beautiful collection, I've read a few, I need to read more!0
Hey, I'm from India
Tin man was the last book that I just finished and it made a hole in my heart. LOVED IT SO SO MUCH. The part where Elias comes with Annie for the first time for her to meet with Micheal who was dancing and how he says that he knows she's THE ONE it broke my heart then and there.
Lots of love.
Take care. Stay safe ❤️
It is a wonderful wonderful wonderful book isn’t it? Hope all is as well as can be with you. Thank you for the comment.
Absolutely wonderful it was. Looking forward to reading "Still life" after hearing all you have to say about it.
Lots of love ❤️.
I want to buy all your recommendations but my wallet is cringing 😂😂. I will definitely start with Five though, I’m also fascinated with Jack the Ripper and I am so glad you suggested a book about the victims. Just finished the manningtree witches and wow Blakemore’s writing is so poetic. Started Osman’s Thursday Murder Club and loving his humor.
I have made a video that goes live about poetic writers and Blakemore is mentioned. Hope you enjoy The Five, if that’s the right word.
Well my TBR just got a bit bigger. I read Tin Man at the beginning of quarantine last year and when I finished I thought, this is a perfect book. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.
It’s just a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful book.
Tin Man is my absolute favourite as well. The last 3 books are the ones I've read and are brilliant.
It’s a corker. I can’t wait to talk to Sarah on Thursday.
I was a bit iffy about Graham Norton writing books, I picked up Holding and it blew me away and is definitely in my top 25 books of all time. I re-read A Keeper last week, it just reduced me to tears and I thought it was wonderful. I think I was overly harsh about it the first time around, but I'd read it about 8 weeks after a close bereavement happening, and I think that tainted my reading experience of it. But I'm glad I gave it another go.
Summerwater by Sarah Moss was brilliant as an audiobook. I've read 14 of your favs, makes plenty of room for some of your other favs on my TBR pile :D
Western Wind was amazing, really like Memento or Usual Suspects rather than any genre
Rather than any genre? I don’t understand.
I've read Bus on Thursday and thought it was slightly odd, but in a good way. I have Hamnet, The Prophets and I am an Island on my shelves to read. Was surprised Elif Shafak didn't appear somewhere on your list, but I guess you have to draw the line somewhere.
I’d love to see a video with some recommendations from books before you started UA-cam.
Picnic at hanging rock has an incredible movie adaptation as well! Love the book so much though.
Ooh I’ve not seen the film. Or the tv adaptation actually.
You showed me My Name is Leon by Kit de Waal and I always think of you when I see it on my shelves. It’s one of my favourites and I thought it would be one of yours too!
I loved that book. I read that before BookTube though I think. Along with Three Things About Elsie. It was so hard to pick 30 from over 600+ books over 5 years.
@@SavidgeReads I can only imagine! I found your podcast first and so grateful for your UA-cam presence, since. Happy reading!
Sarah Winman is one of my favourite authors on the planet. I've had the pleasure of escorting her around Vancouver, BC and Vancouver Island when she has been here for our Vancouver Writers Festival. I loved Tin Man and look forward to her new title coming this fall to our market in Canada
Really really enjoyed this video….off to look at tin man.
Hope you enjoy it when you get to it.
Trauma Cleaner! bought it for friends too!
A brilliant book.
Did you hear that The Bass Rock won the Stella Prize in Australia? yay!
thanks Simon! Lots more to add to my tbr.
Can I still purchase a ticket to your Sarah Winman event and access the content at a later time? (it's a tad too early for this aussie). I absolutely loved Still Life and When God was a Rabbit and now want to get to Tin Man
Oops! I feel called out, because I haven't read any of these books. 🙈 There are some on my TBR though. Hope that's good enough. 😉
Well, considering Girl, Woman, Other was my fave of 2020, and Hamnet my fave of this year (and actually my new all-time absolute favorite book ever, don't think anything could ever possibly top it), I think I definitely need to read Tin Man!
It's interesting that all your Aus favs are set in the colder climates of Aus, even if "Picnic.." is set in summer. Not a tropical read among them!
From The Wreak is set in South Australia, Hanging Rock is about 70km NW of Melbourne in Victoria, The Trauma Cleaner - Melbourne, Flames is set in Tasmania and The Bus on Thursdays is set in Talbingo NSW (about 200km from where I live), it's also near where Miles Franklin lived as a child.
All are, way south of Sydney. Beautiful wild and sometimes spooky places though.... including Melbourne, lol.
jane rawson book is SO GOOD!!
I need to read her new one which I have waiting for me at home.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I agree that The Tin Man is fantastic!!!
Interesting to see so many Australian novels, they sound phenomenal indeed!! You don't read French, German, Italian, Spanish literature?
From The Wreck sounds like exactly the kind of book I am looking for but is so rare to find . I am very drawn to the lyrical and fantastical but in a down to earth sort of way and not overly ambitious ( involving grand political plots and saving the world ), futuristic or dystopian .
I've only read two on your list - The Five, by Hallie Rubenhold; and The Essex Serpent, by Sarah Perry - and while I think The Five needs to be recommended reading for all history students studying the end of the 20th century in Britain, I was distinctly underwhelmed by The Essex Serpent. It was beautifully written but I found it hollow. I struggled to care for any of the characters and didn't see the appeal of the main character at all; I felt that Perry was forcing us to like her rather than showing why we should. However, saying that - the cover though! God, it's gorgeous. More cover art like that, please.
Tin Man is definitely in my top 5 books. I also loved Happiness and don’t know anyone else who has read that one.
Wow, I love the US cover for Tin Man so much more than the UK one (sorry, UK one).
💜🌞💜📚
So I’m guessing that Tin Man, From the Wreck, Days Without End, West, How Much of These Hills is Gold and The Prophets will make this list. Can’t wait to see how wrong/right I am! 🙂
Hahahaha we’re you shocked or pleasantly surprised.
@@SavidgeReads I will happily take 4! So glad to see Girl, Woman, Other and Hamnet so high on the list so that was a lovely surprise. You’ve got me interested in so many of these books so I’m excited to discover others. Thanks Simon. Phenomenal!! 😉🙂
Thanks Simon. Yours was one of the first BookTube channels I watched and I have thoroughly enjoyed all the hauls, wrap-ups, blogs, etc Special recognition to Louise as well.😊 The book that I was not surprised to see here was Stay With Me. Absolutely will read that book as you have championed it and celebrated it so often. Looking forward to the podcast forthcoming !! Happy anniversary and thanks for the joy!
Simon, I am trying to find your video all about Freshwater (I am flying through it at the moment and would love to watch your video when I’m finished) - I’m so sorry to ask but I can’t find it, am I being blind?! 🧐
I have hamnet on my book case
A must read from me.
Hello!! can you help me haha, I want to get a book you mentioned in one of your bookish videos but I can't for the life of me remember the name - the book has sprayed edges and I think if I remember correctly, it's about an island where people have different gifts/powers ?? Please I need your help!! thank you so much, I love your videos
i think the book you mean is called This One Sky Day :))
Amy got there first. It is that very book and spookily it gets a mention in this video.
@@amywhitaker1318 Thank you Amy!!! that's the one
@@SavidgeReads hahaha I look forward to watching!!! I've been loving all the videos this week, happy 5 year booktube anniversary! I found you through Leena a few months ago and couldn't be happier then when either of you post :) take care!
Awwww that’s lovely. I love Leena.
Tin Man ❤️❤️
Girl, Women Other is one of Obama’s favorite books too.
I DNF'd The Bass Rock. What did I miss?
We can’t all love the same books. That would be very boring. lol. Maybe it just wasn’t for you.
