- A couple of weekends ago I went on one of the best reading retreats ever, because it also had a literary twist. I went to stay at Rhiw Goch in Wales, the setting of one of my favourite non fiction reads in the last few years, On The Red Hill by Mike Parker, a tale of nature, queer social history and how we find each other and ourselves. Wow. Stunning. This is my favorite video you've ever done. So cozy and relaxing! I'm sold on On The Red Hill. Sounds right up my street! Loved the bonus of Chris' review of the book! So cool that he was able to read that in the actual setting. I've also been interested in Summerwater for a long time and it sounds perfect for that setting. Great job, Simon! Thanks for taking us along with you on your beautiful trip. Looking forward to the next one in the fall!

What a gorgeous property to visit and stay. So serene with the scenery and those birds in the background.
The most gorgeous birdsong pretty much all the time. I want to learn what bird makes what sound though. That would be a nice thing to be able to do.

I love Machynlleth. We spent a winter in the town which was magical and healing. I love the countryside around there. There is a beautiful town called Llanidloes which has the best place to eat and a little bookshop which we both love. I won’t ever persuade hubby to spend a night under canvas! I will definitely be heading to the book On the Red Hill and I love Sarah Moss as well. Great video, thank you both. x
Just finished On The Red Hill and had to go back to this video and watch it again. Such a good book and I'm looking forward to your next visit there. . . Hoping for another video!
This was great! I adore Sarah Moss and loved Summerwater too. I have most of her backlist still to read and I’m liking the look of those Granta editions… 👀 I really want to stay on the red hill. What i’d really like is to go on my own - leave husband and child at home, read, swim and walk to my hearts content for a couple of days, a proper retreat. Very unlikely to happen but I can dream!!

We're quite lucky to have some border collie pups of our own at the moment - we also have a Floss, but she much prefers to do sheep work on her own terms. I enjoyed this vlog and thank thee very much for bringing us along with you. There's a general sense of calm about the entire video that I appreciate very much.
You’re very lucky though these aren’t collies. They are English Shepherds I learnt, look very similar though. Also please don’t tease me with puppies, hahaha. I want them so much.

I read Summerwater at the weekend & loved it so much. I'm still mulling it over - so much to think about. Love that Chris read On the Red Hill when you were actually there!
He reads loads when we’re on holiday. I slow right down. It definitely adds an extra something knowing the history.
I loved everything about this. A breathtaking spot, perfect reading, amazing places to visit and great food and of course all the wonderful dogs. This was a special vlog Simon. And I had no idea about the new Moss novel. Hooray!!!
I’m so tempted to read The Fell right NOW because it’s here and I love Summerwater so much. I like Ghost Wall and Cold Earth loads too I should add. I think I should read her backlist first though.

This was delightful! Loved everything about this vlog, especially the puppies and scenery and delicious food. Had to LOL at the commentary about dinosaurs during the visit to the 4,000 year-old fossilized trees. What a perfect getaway.
Hahaha he’s a funny one that Chris Savidge. It was a dreamy getaway. And I get to getaway there again in a few months.

Hahaha. We didn’t know about the puppies before we booked. They were a bonus. I don’t think they’ll still be there when we go back but Floss will!
The scenery there is a lot like mine. I take my doggo to s local wood and see deer (I've seen young ones as well), Pheasants, Eagles, Kestrels, and lots of sheep. Ironically last night when I was at the door where I could hear the sheep as it was such a clear night. I do the same when I am with the sheep too, making the bleating noise! You're not the only one who does it LOL. I'd be in my element with the dog and puppers, I would have to be checked before I left in case I smuggled a pupper! They're so adorable as are the lambs here at the moment. Could your cats smell the dogs off your clothes when you got home? I always wonder if they have.
I was frisked in case I had taken Slug or Betsy. The cats don’t mind dogs. We’ve had a couple visit and Mildred puts them in their places and Oscar just wants to be friends.
@@SavidgeReads Ruby does the same with Alfie, another doggo who visits us. LOL at the Frisking! That would defo happen to me

Oh! This was the most beautiful bit of a break, bit of escape I could wish for on a Sunday night. I just finished Norwegian Wood and was wondering what to read next. I’ve got Summerwater on my nightstand, so decision made. I fast forwarded through the bits where you were holding up the book, just in case. Will watch again after I’ve finished the book! What a treat this has been!

What a beautiful place and on my list of places to visit when next in the UK…it is such a joy watching and listening to you. And because of you, I’m now taking baths again (instead of just showers) and treating myself to bath bombs and lovely lotions and potions for pampering ❤️
Baths are the best. Though you couldn’t put a bath bomb in the pool at Rhiw Goch. Lol.
It sounds like you had an amazing weekend in a truly beautiful part of the world. I also do the same thing on holidays of packing in a busy first day and then needing to crash the second.
We were only there two full days hahaha. So next time much more relaxed.
That looks like such a lovely, peaceful place. I almost thought you were somewhere in Italy at times, with the rolling hills. I didn't know Sarah Moss had a new book out this year. I loved Ghost Wall and really enjoyed Summerwater. Very excited for The Fell now. It sounds very timely.

North / Mid Wales never disappoints 🏞️ From the footage I'd say you were visited by swallows ( long tail streamers, white breast ) rather than Swift's, which stay airborne and give a high pitched scream when feeding #birdnerd 🦉🤓 ♥️
