I like how everyone is "get your glasses off, I know your secret", assuming her eyes is the only thing Mizu is hiding.
The best way to hide a big secret is to put it behind a little secret. Then when people discover your 'secret', they dont think to look deeper.
another detail not immediately obvious in the animation: Mizu is really tall for a Japanese woman, making it easier to pose as male; she’s never storyboarded next to a Japanese woman to make a clear comparison, but in this episode alone the audience can see her staged head and shoulders w/ Taigen and even then she seems to have a few cm on him
@@hellfish2309I guess the fact that she’s mixed race also helps . I’ve noticed that people tend to not be as good at recognizing faces/genders/ages from another race.

Kenneth Brannagh is a Northern Irish actor. He's using his own Northern Irish accent. It's authentic, trust me. I'm from and live in Northern Ireland.

Just on the 'White Guy' - he doesn't have a Scottish accent. he has an accent from Northern Ireland (and it's not bad :) )
I think it's cause we typically don't hear Northern Irish accents as much as the mainland and Scots
I almost didn't recognise Kenneth Branagh in this part
He was born in Belfast, and was raised in England. I'm from Rep. of Ireland so I wouldn't know specific regional accents, but to my ear it sounds fine. Also, this is a historical piece not present day. With that in mind, yeah I think he does a decent job :)
@@SeanTanktop I assume by "mainland" you're talking about Britain. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here as I'm sure you just didn't know. Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland (which is Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland). Northern Ireland is part of the UK (Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England), but the Rep. of Ireland is a separate country. The political history has been quite fraught, and there's been a lot of violence within far too recent memory. Long story short, please don't refer to Britain as the mainland. Otherwise I'm loving the reactions. 👍

I feel like you're doing the George Takei character wrong because you're assuming he's in the wrong, but he's just being practical. He wants what's best for Akemi and that isn't rebelling against her position, it's using it. He isn't telling her to accept her natural role as a dutiful wife, he's telling her to work within her confines as a wife to a powerful man to carve out a better one. Like, she isn't going to overcome the patriarchy of feudal Japan by being stubborn, but he's not telling her to give up either, he's just telling her to pick her battles instead of fighting a losing one.
Exactly, I mean, her plan might actually work out in the end because this is a story, but the most likely result would be for her to actually get stuck as a prostitute and her father covering it up to save his reputation

Homie isn't Iroh, he is Septa Mordane from S1 GoT. He is Akemi's nurse made prepping her for the sad reality that as woman in that world she is a commodity. Akemi is like as pouty and entitled as Sansa but as disdainful of her position as Cersei. I hated her at first I she growin on me. Not for nothing she seems like she can throw it back and she kinda crazy and hence a bit hot.

I’m rotten: I want her to find a free-wheeling “Captain Jack Sparrow”-type in Singapore or something to hook up with, then becomes adversarial against, then to land in a love triangle w/ Taigen when they return to Japan

The only person thinking they'd go the route of that 2nd trope is you ma dude. Even if they choose to go the romantic relationship way with them, there's nothing in the write even remotely implying they'd settle for that 2nd trope. In fact with no spoilers at all there's a whole fucking masterpiece of an episode that basically is there to establish they will never go that route.

This show isn't set in 2024...It was the time when women didn't have that many choices...The man who raise the princess is a good guy..trying to help the princess make the best decision...where there were very few choices...Ppl who live in a privilege time trying to watch this show through that lens...just goes to show how blind to the privilege u do have...
You're right. But this show was written and released in 2024. By your estimation we have to completely divorce any and all current sensibilities and figure out exactly what the cultural and historical constraints on the characters were in era they occured in.
Those are obviously to be considered, but also it's likely okay to feel these things given that the character goes through a redemption arc and helps her fight for her freedom later in the show and pays the ultimate sacrifice in doing so. She is one of the main characters. I think it's part of the journey, we resent him here in this spot because she does. Trust, we reflect on his intent and acknowledge the systems they are up agains and we say as much in future episodes. This show's story isn't over at this point, and neither is our's while watching. @SeanTanktop Yeah she fights for her freedom but it's very much spelled out that's because she's Also privileged...Will be stated later on in the show...The common women is still being sold by their fathers,...anyways most can view this show in the context in the time and culture it's set in...not in some progression western lens...The same white western lens Japan was trying to shut out..
