I've got two of these to play with at work!
We needed something for a classroom environment that was relatively portable and the 50% off Kickstarter price was hard to beat. Darkly Labs being a Melbourne company was a bonus; their support has been top notch.
I love where all this new technology is going! There's never been a better time to be a maker!! Thanks for this, Angus. -Jeff
Hey angus! great work as always!! could you tell us if designing for laser cutting, what are the strong points in using fusion 360 and exporting dxf, and using illustrator, thank you very much!!! cheers from Brazil
makers muse is my favorite channel I can believe he lives in Australia because from where he takes his videos it looks a lot like it does now in Wisconsin
When is the Emblaser 420 comming out?
Great video thank you. can I please ask what is the average cutting & engraving speed. Is it good for start up business.
did you ever test out the emblaster 2
Nice unit, just a bit pricey still unless you offset the cost. Will this be able to do gun parts? An can they make it to do round objects? Thanks
Nice unit, the price is very counter-intuitive though. For circa $3k much more versatile CO2 laser systems can be found
Mungbean totally agree, paid less than that for an 80w Chinese
@@Madeinoz1967
Yeah but the Chinese one will be behind the times in both quality, features, and little to no support. I'd love to see a Chinese one half the price that can create quality results.
@makersmuse I'm in the market for a laser engraver, so from your experience what affordable engraver would be the best bang for your buck, the only true thing that im looking for in the graver is the ability to engrave anodized aluminium.
Finaly a diode laser I can get behind. May have to get one for review. Thanx Mate.
For sure! Hope to test it out as well.
Maybe als look at the Mr Beam II, don't really know what you're looking for, but that one also has a diode laser!
Undefeatable Sensor? Challenge accepted!
Ian Colquhoun *the laser cutter channel*
Looks similar to the Mr. Beam 2, which also uses a 5W laser diode (www.mr-beam.org). Given the size and overall weight shipping costs may play an important role, thus its good to have different similar options available across the globe.
Very interesting! The lack of mirrors to clean and adjust would indeed make this very education-friendly. Does the diode have a lifespan similar to something like the tube in CO2 lasers or is this pretty much free of consumables? Besides electricity of course. I have an Epilog Zing already but I hope they sell a ton of them.
It does indeed, heat is the killer of diodes so that's why its got the crazy looking heatsink and mount assembly. The diode replacement process looked fairly simple though, definitely a tonne easier than aligning mirrors and focusing lenses. The Zing's are nice little machines! Again co2 has diodes beat for power (plus diodes can't cut clear acrylic) but for a teacher I think this is a godsend.
Maker's Muse I see! With affordable 3D printers, hobby lasers, and all the desktop milling machines popping up in the last 10 years I am incredibly excited for the younger generation of makers. Cheers!
I really need a lottery win! Sweet bit of kit.
What was that cube thing covered in engraved sections? Is it a replica prop from something?
I've seen someone write with those circles before. I think it's from Dr. Who but I'm not quite sure.
It's a replica of The Moment from The Day of The Doctor.
I thought I saw you there! Was working a stall however.... (also I realise how late this comment is.)
Can it engrave metal?
Afdhal Atiff Tan Amin Husaini Tan you can engrave metal. At the end it shows a skull done on metal plate. Does nice on metal. Better details then wood i think.
I've just ordered my first 3D printer (a 3DCSTAR P802-MHS), what are good forums to join?
Mexie Mex I recently got one too anyone have any suggestions

www.reddit.com/r/3dprinting
not a forum really but get on thingiverse also there are printer specific forums like the reprap forum but not sure about your printer.
+Skj Skj, Doh! I keep forgetting there is anything more than KEK on Reddit LOL
+Shaun Husain, Already a member of Thingiverse ;^>
i bet in the near future we'll begin to see automatic tattooing machines that can print any picture on your skin
the real test is can it play portal songs?
Infomercial ????
We need more lasers to bring the price down on them. Glad to see these new ones.
OOOOOps over priced as seen after watching.
"Undefeatable".. Unless you have a even a very basic electronics kit. So DMM + pot. :) I'll stick with the interlocks on the RayJet 300.. 2 magnetic sensors per door.
Hopefully it'll be more reliable than their Up Mini's under heavy(class/school) use.
Magnets are WAY easier to defeat, we used to just stick neodymiums on the sensors so we could fire the laser while calibrating mirrors... I don't expect a student or teacher to happen upon the correct resistance to cheat both interlocks. Schools really are the ultimate test of any tech, what happened to your mini's?
At least on the RayJet there is a 'service plug' that turns off the interlocks, yay service manuals :) Plus because it's big, intimating machine once you drill the 'this WILL MAKE YOU INSTANTLY BLIND' bit in, they don't touch them. I'm more worried about dirt on the contacts/loose connectors/etc causing the lid interlocks to fail open, reed switches last longer.(Final focusing mirrors on the otherhand, well.. We have a collection of them now. A machine that gets used 12 hours a day for most of the week gets some serious use. There are now 2 spare lenses stored away for later. :)
As for the mini's.. Beyond all the mainboards fried themselves in different ways(We had 4 machines, now we are down to 1. Hopeful the Mini 2's will be better. Even THAT has stupid interlocks we need to disable so we can open doors.) and we are using smoothie upgrades to try and recover them, promising results) we've had bed heaters fail, internal lighting fail, wiring looms break and so, so SO many jams/clogs(Last is more '3d printer' thing. But it's still frustrating to watch a commercial machine strip fulfillment and require the extruder dismantling to clean. We expect this on the home made i3's but not these.)
Still, they are easy to use for the untrained, so they stay. :)
Could this be used to hack together an SLS 3D printer? I want to see that! :)
Probably. But at that pricepoint, you can just buy a Sintratec kit and be done with it...
+ExtraBase you really don't want to own a SLS... trust me!
+Maker's Muse I was considering to get one, but then i was worried too much about the powder and dust problems. I don't really have a spare room or workshop that i could dedicate to such a mess. And then there is that problem with fumes too. Not shure about the exact temperatures involved in firing that Laser into a bed of plastic, but i'm pretty shure an FDM nozzle keeps the temperature, and with that the harmful emissions, at much lower levels.
I would personally LOVE to own an SLS. I design stuff that usually requires SLS (see here twistypuzzles.com/cgi-bin/pdb-search.cgi?act=inv&key=837), and having my own is much cheaper in the long run than always buying prints from other places. But I'd just be worried about the maintenance and the quality of the prints. An EOS machine definitely prints better than the Sintratec, and I don't have to troubleshoot if something goes wrong.
Dumb price.... its a $900 desktop laser...
What is this? I built a 100w CO2 with a 1200mm x 1200mm work area for 3k. Do yourself a favor and build your own, You learn more and save money.
NACAM42 this is really great! 100w with this size with this budget! Can you make a video to show the tools and where did you get it from?
A. Ahmed it's mostly from lightobject.com just look around there. lots of good stuff.
Yeah same here im building a 40w co2 laser for a little bit more than $1000 diy is the way to go
Quite pricey, to my country.
over 3,000 and its not 64 bit jesus.
For the price, I'd get a glow forge
seems a lot like the glowfordge...
Or a Mr. Beam (mr-beam.org)
'Thin' wood? Even the manufacturer's site does not indicate how thick or what sort of wood it will cut - ply, MDF, HMRMDF? 1, 2 or 3 millimeter? It really needs to be able to cut 3mm ply for halfway serious model making.
+Bruce Lee it'll need several passes afaik for 3mm but it can do it many of the models were that thick
Bruce Lee yes it does cut 3mm ply.
The Mr. Beam cutter/engraver that is pretty much the same machine, with a 5W solid state laser, claims they can cut 4mm plywood, 2mm MDF, 5mm balsa and 2mm acryl. But i'm not shure if that is single pass cutting, or more. And nobody says how clean (straight down, charring depth?) the cut will actually look.
Their website has thickness of materials it can cut:
darklylabs.com/emblaser2/
Reckons 6mm mdf, which I find surprising. I have a 5w diode laser, and it would take an incredibly long time, with multiple passes to achieve that. Mind you, mine cost about $300 I think.
The Emblaser 2 has optics for beam reshaping to get the most out of a 5w laser diode. It is surprising, but it works!

*I really want a 3d printer!!!!😂😂😂😂*
So buy one?
there are good 3d printers for $250....
c'mon
some ok ones for 200
Maker's Muse made a video on
I've got an unopened Aldi one going cheap :)
How are these still so expensive? You can build one for less then 1k and there are several options for open source software to run it on. I just don't see what value you're getting for that kind of money.
