  • We got a 36 lb box of minneola oranges for a good price, so we blended a bunch of them to freeze dry in out Harvest Right. Also, rehydrating a sample.
Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

As usual. Love the videos! And the air ratchet sounds in the background for the peeling. Awesome!! 👍
And you are going to love that hand blender!! I believe I have 4 different ones right now. 2 corded, 2 cordless. Quick, easy, and like you say fun!

Thanks. I got to try a hand blender last year when we made refried beans and it was nice, but this one was awesome! I didn't even know they made a cordless one; do you like it, and if so, what is it?

You can mix orange juice 1:1 water too. I find the added water is taken out. leaving holes for the sugars to expand. I like pulp but not pith do your method might be a little too thick for me lol. But I love your videos.

When I do sweet fruit I add a desiccant to help keep the moisture out. They do absorb moisture quickly.

I will try this method with my oranges, limes and lemons, why did you limit the batch size to half of normal, was it to speed up batch processing times?

And that's one of the things wrong with my older video, I often left out information just to keep the videos shorter. Even after watching the video I don't remember why I did that! I assume that 1) I had a reason that made sense to me at the time, and 2) it was probably to limit the water load, though I did see that I had two layers of the thin slabs on parts of it, for a total of 3750 grams, about 8 1/4 lbs. (That kind of orange is pretty much a bag of juice.)

Where do you purchase your mylar bags? I do like how they zip shut and have a wide bottom.
Also, what makes the Teflon on the impulse sealer go bad and need replaced?

It’s called gusset and topmylar and packfreshusa sell them in 7 mil

The bags in this video are the "Quart Seal Top Gusset 7 Mil Stand Up Mylar Bags Sets" from packfreshusa.com/quart-seal-top-gusset-7-mil-stand-up-mylar-bags-sets/ My favorite bags are the pint bag, the quart bag (it is really about 3/4 quart) and the 2 quart bag. They list the actual volumes on their web site.
We've had to replace the Teflon tape on our sealer twice. (about 4000 bags?) Ours tends to wear out/fry in the same spot each time. I assume the heat strip is hotter in that spot for some reason. I used to work at a place that used a lot of the same kind of sealer and they did the same thing. I just keep a supply of the tape on hand and a spare heat strip.

@@SchoolReports thanks do much for the response. Johanna and I get a kick out of your videos, we recently started freeze drying. We were guessing that you were an engineer or a professor.

@@EarthshipFreedom Thanks a lot for checking out our videos! I hope you have as much fun freeze drying as we do. I find it very satisfying to see the rack filled with bins of freeze dried food.

    That is an immersion blender.
36 pounds gross and 30 pounds net?????

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  8 місяців тому

Yes! Immersion blender, also referred to as hand blenders, stick blenders or wand mixers. It was the first one I've had and I couldn't remember what they were called when I was making the video. 😁
Minneola oranges do have thin, light peels, but still only a 6 pound loss does sound wrong now that you ask the question. I don't have complete enough notes (my note keeping kind of sucked) to confirm my numbers. I'll have to do another batch when I can get another box of them, and be more careful with my data.
🤣 I have to apologize for many of my older videos. In my focus to keep my older videos very short, most of my older, shorter videos are almost devoid of information! I tried hard to keep the videos down to less then 10 or 15 minutes, no matter what I had to cut out! (Like information!)
