    Gretchen Rubin is a sensationally successful podcaster and author of the bestselling books The Happiness Project and Better Than Before. During her lifelong investigation into human nature, explored most recently in her bestselling book Better Than Before, Rubin realised that by asking the seemingly dry question 'How do I respond to expectations?' we gain life changing self-knowledge. She discovered that based on their answer, people seem to fit into Four Tendencies: Upholders, Questioners, Obligers, and Rebels. Our Tendency shapes every aspect of our behaviour, so using this framework allows us to make better decisions, meet deadlines, suffer less stress, and engage more effectively.

    I watched this 6 years ago thinking "interesting, I'm totally a rebel" and it really helped me to find more interesting ways to motivate myself to do things. I've since been diagnosed with ADHD and I'm wondering how much of the rebel population is also some kind of neurodivergent/executive function issues/etc.

    Because of my rebel tendency, I'm obliged to question and uphold the insights from this discussion.😉

    One of the best explainable session I have heard so far on her book The Four Tendencies. Thank you so much for this wisdom. Yes, it's just a tool to meet and understand the people & work on acting on expectations and live life wonderfully. Thank you so much Gretchen Rubin (Ma'am)...Lots of love..

    As an Obliger, I definitely see Questioners as opposite of me, and I have a lot of Questioner friends. I think I admire their questioning, and I've learned from them to also pause and not just do so much automatically.

    "Happiness project" is a must read for everyone. I am currently reading it for last one week. It has profound impact on me. Now I believe that "how we act can influence how we feel" and it's not always the other way around. I feel more happy when I changed minor habits while meeting with people and talking with my parents. I also loved how we should have "fun" and author's note on that subject. Its not mandatory to enjoy things what other's like and the same, which we don't like. And the fun shouldn't always be related to profit( be in financial or non productive). I guess sometimes doing "fun" is just to elevate our daily mood. Thank you Gretchen.

      My word-! So glad I'm not alone feeling this way. I can definitely see myself questioning myself about what motivation is being blocked in this moment, or with this task?But can also look back at past frictions with some of the other tendencies in others. I can see how it really CAN help us understand others!

    Gretchen, you mention that you believe the 4 tendencies are hard wired personality traits. Since they are basically the 4 combinations of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, I'm curious what your thoughts are on Kohlberg's theory of the Stages of Moral Development.

    Question Dr. ???
    wich would be the simplest of the other 3 to combine or adapt into
    from "rebel" to ....?

    • @MrNimbus420
      @MrNimbus420 5 років тому

      Questioner I guess... But still I feel like this is the wrong question. Instead ask yourself as a rebel how should you manipulate your environment and sense of self to do what Upholders do.

    What??? I should listen to all of this ... but so far.... people are in different categories??? Seriously/??? People surely are all for depending on what, where, when etc.... C'mon!!! Seriously??? Maybe I didn't get the first 10 minutes and there's a catch.

      She said she believes personnality is genetic (innate), so that should answer your question : there's a big tendancy that is somewhat nuanced by culture (family and others). If you don't share her point of view, it won't make sense ^^
      But your question is kinda answered at around 56:45 in the video
