I wish there were more diversity in the water. Actually there is in terms of age, gender and equipment. People assume it's all rich kids who live at the beach, but in reality the core has always been blue-collar/service/schoolteacher/alternative-job beatnik travelers with non-material priorities. The beach is no longer affordable so if you are genuinely obsessed and hardy enough, don't feel left out, just go! You will be judged by your dedication not your wallet or looks. Surfing is a soul thing!
