True Story, my fastest lap around this track was in a Datsun 1600 and I did it at night. Was late and the drive in theater had just closed. As I was going through Bathurst I thought I might just go for a Lap. As I started up Mountain Straight I decided to refrain from burning up the rear tyres too much and proceeded at a steady 37 MPH or 60 KPH and it was great as this is the first and only time I have driven this track. It was wonderful as I got part way up and there was a Police car sitting beside the track with speed monitoring gear so I was happy that I decided to conserve my tyres. I set a personal best on that day/night for my fastest lap and it will not ever be broken. I am SO GLAD I DID AS TV DOES NOT DO JUSTICE TO THIS TRACK! Across the top of the Mountain would be SPHINCTER clenching for those that do not have to do 60KPH as A MAX. That was about 1985 and to all out there, do yourself a good turn and drive this track. After then you may know why this is called the GREAT RACE! John, Australia.
What a story John! I've been there myself about 2 years ago now, was an absolute blast despite only doing 60 KM/H for the most part but I definitely agree, you don't realise how steep the track is especially going up to the cutting and coming down through the esses into the dipper. Just to think as well the dipper has been modified a lot since the earlier days so it's not as steep. A worth while visit for any motorsport fan I say!
You know, I almost beat your lap time. Hired a Kia Rio automatic in Sydney, saw the 3 sisters at Katoomba then 1st time at Bathurst set an absolute blinder. 50klm/h for most of the track. Probably averages close to 39klm/h, bit sketchy over the top of the mountain, but wow! What a lap. Second lap tho stopped up the top and looked at Brocky's wall, destroyed my chance of claiming out-right honours and the podium champagne. Theres always next year.
Jimmy " fantastic driver ...normally a reserved guy but ......but on the podium ,"you are all a pack of arseholes, " Jim called it as it was I will never forget that arvo!.
I still reckon he’s the best driver, ever. He won in anything and everything. That has to be one of the most majestic things I’ve ever seen. Brilliant!
The camera inside the car cracks me up....its like being in my mother's old Pintara station wagon...except at 250 km/h. They even left the original heater/demister controls in the dash!!! Great stuff.
The Group A GT-Rs definitely sounded a bit muffled. I always assumed it was poor mic quality in 1991-92, but I feel like the setup they used just didn’t promote the sound as much as single turbo/more modern setups are capable of doing.
I was lucky enough as a young lad to see Jim rally escorts and race saloon cars in NZ, dad took us to race tracks just about every second weekend. Then move to Aus at age 11 to see him race at Lakeside surfers paradise and Bathurst. He's such a talent and such. modest guy. Anyone that disagrees would be a pack of arse holes😂
I drove my WRX along with 9 other rexies around mount Panorama 2 weeks ago & was thinking of Jim Richard’s & Mark Skaif screaming around the mountain in their GTR’s.
This technology was the way Bathurst should have gone. Then the V8 cars would have improved beyond comprehension instead of the boring shit they created and continues today.
Fat Albert (Raymond) didn't like ANYTHING that wasn't a Holden v8 with Brock driving it...even when the Dinosaur Commodore had NO chance of being competitive against the Sierra's and Gtr Fat Albert still ranted on about brock/commodore
Great to see these old clips hitting UA-cam. Thanks for tracking them down.
Glad you're enjoying them! More to come in the future :)
There is a disc pack you can buy from jb hi fi (if you live in Australia) it has all the shootouts from 1978 to 1996
Jim Richards is a legend, drive any car on any track.
Those R31's absolutely SCREAMED...Sounded Amazing at Full Noise
The Kiwi,Gentleman Jim Richards, a maestro at the wheel, and a brilliant driver in the wet.!!
One of the best sounding Group A cars.

That sounded magnificent! The way Gentleman Jim threw it around, reminds me of the way they throw a dummy around in the Naked Gun movies! 😂

Yeah Group A had to be pretty much standard trim 👍🏁
The best sounding, best looking car of the group A days. If it only had more power.
Don't know about good looking, but very underrated car. Sounds awesome.
They did sound good but the bmw m3 and the group a commodores were the best sounding
I know every corner perfectly. This is my favourite track in Project Cars
Same well I prefer fm7 more but yeah it’s an amazing circuit
How good do these RB20DET engines sound, way better than the legendary Godzilla RB26DET of the later GTR's.
yeah I don't know about that.
RB30 sounded better!
Any turbo rb sounds better than than the 26DETT. Anyone that knows rb’s would say the same

I have some of these races on VHS.
Great upload 👌
The good old days of VHS!
@@TouringCarsofAus yeah ,rewind the tape after watching 😂👍
Gentleman Jim
Great sound, looks great too! :)

Electric window in a Race car, that´s the spirit
love the turbofan wheels
Look what that car became!
Honoured to say that I've driven my own GTR around that track many times. Even it was only at the legal 60KPH.
So a 2:20 for the r31 and then a 2:12 for the r32 in the 91 shoot out dam what a difference
Atesa+ power engine, what do you espect ?? R31 still sounding much better than the R32-33-34
4WD & 2.6L Vs RWD & 2.0L
@@Big1_ They actually stripped the Attesa system on the r32 GTRs. They were heavily modified.
@@_Junkers You are thinking of the HICAS 4 wheel steer, they didn't remove ATTESA which is the AWD system.
Love this. It wasn't the turbo's that destroyed touring cars in Australia it was the AWD R32. Now its boring AF.
Full respect to the R32 though,
This technology was the way Bathurst should have gone. Then the V8 cars would have improved beyond comprehension instead of the boring shit they created and continues today.
Maybe it could go faster without that big camera in the passenger side 😝
the birth of godzilla...
the old pintara RWD body
Go the mighty little RB20DET, they love to scream
2:20
Not bad for a little 2L 6
WHO BUILT THE ENGINES FOR THESE CARS IN 1989??????
Gibson Motorsport
FJ20 Turbos ? Dont sound like a RB20DET thats for sure lol
Are you drunk? It's an HR31, not a DR dipshit
Doesn't sound like the stock RB20DET log manifolds found in most cars, sounds exactly like an RB20DET with an equal length tubular manifold.
downforce…what downforce
A good sounding engine doesn’t translate into a fast car .
We could make cars go fast but we didnt understand gforces back then
I stopped watching Bathurst when they ruined conrod straight.
Nobody misses you
@TasmanianDevil3 no problems, you're doing a great job 👍🏻
Not much substance to the commentating. Just dribble
Dribble interspersed with Drivel

Agreed, shit dribbling spuds with the combined IQ of a doorknob.
