Powerful Kimura Setup for White Belts to Stop Basic Guard Break

  • Here is a powerful Kimura setup from Guard that works off of a Basic Guard break many White Belts (and just people in general) will use in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
    Many times setting up the Kimura from closed Guard can be tough because people are very conscious of their hands and arms and don't allow someone to isolate them. If you've train Brazilian Jiujitsu you get a 6th sense about not letting your arms get over extended or pulled away from your body.
    This is why you 1st have to focus on breaking the posture of the person rather than attempting a submission. It's similar to the way a Judo player will explain a throw.
    In Judo, before you can worry about the actual throwing technique. You have to focus on Kuzushi. Which is the pushing and pulling that causes a person to be off balance and open up the attack.
    Attacking from the Guard on the ground is the same way. Before you begin to attempt the throw. You 1st have to knock the person off balance and break their posture.
    Once the posture is broken. We can then attempt our actual attack.
    In this video I try to share some of the simple details that can make the kimura from Full Guard work.
    1. Isolate the arm.
    2. Secure the figure 4 armlock for the Kimura / Ude Garami.
    3.Move the body to the finishing position.
    4. Use the WHOLE body to finish! Don't just focus on pushing with the arms.
    To drive home the idea of the 4th part of that list. When doing a submission in BJJ. Remember that the idea of a submission is to attack a part of our opponent's body (arm, shoulder, knee, etc) with our WHOLE body. In the case of the Kimura. Recruiting as many muscles as possible will help to overwhelm our opponent's strength with our shoulder lock.
    If you're a BJJ White Belt or you just enjoy the Kimura. I hope this video is helpful!
    Thanks!

    Thank you thank you thank you thank you. So many moves for me are based on using strength instead of using technique when rolling this gives me 1) more motivation to keep on rolling more and more and 2) Prevents me from gassing out in minutes. Thanks brother 👊🏻🙏

    I had to laugh when you did the mirror (from right to left). I my right so dominant that using the left side feels like writing with the wrong hand--it's stupidly clumsy. It was so bad that my instructor always told me to put my right arm behind my back (karate not grappling). I got strangely proficient at one-armed sparring.

    • @Chewjitsu

      Lifting is great. Building more hip extension and strong upper back muscles to counter act all of our hip flexion and rounding of the back.
      But outside of the gym the biggest things I would say is diet and rest. Yoga and stretching can be very good too.

    Good stuff Chew. Question. How do your opponents other arm effect this technique? If he posts it quick, or he's posturing up with both arms on your hips, is it viable? And can you use your other arm to help break down their posture as you pull in with your legs? Thanks, man.

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  7 років тому +2

      If you keep the arm tight to the body and immediately move as the person's hand is forced to post. You should be able to prevent them from locking the arms together and defending.

    Chewie, thanks for this. One question...when you push the hand in and shift to the side whilst pulling him forward with your legs, isn't he posting with the other arm ? Because that would make it very hard to break posture. For this reason, should we be pushing both hands in? Hope that makes sense...thanks again

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  7 років тому +1

      If you do the side crunch and then pull while pinning his other hand. It creates an angle that makes it hard for the opponent to posture. Once the hand is forced to post on the mat. You then have your moment of opportunity.

    But the guy has another arm, which in this presentation is 100% unused. But will be the main problem to successfully be able to apply the Kimura grip.
    Unfortunately you skip that part. Usually people lock both their arms with their elbows into your thighs and hands on the hips.
    I'm not sure if the pull with the leg will break the free arms lock so he really loses the balance/posture.

      Venum are good quality and not to pricey, Tatami are also great and good on the wallet. These day I like Wartribe but they are more expensive. Hyperfly make great lightweight gis. I would go with a Venum elite in black. I choose black because its way easier to clean. It's almost a certainty that I will get blood on any brand new white Gi and here in China it is not the easy place to get white clean without bleach. I would also consider if I want to do comps, after all they don't let you use all colours. I would buy direct from their websites if not MMA warehouse has some good Gis and often a few deals.

      I'd recommend either Fuji or Gameness. Both brands make good quality gis for fairly cheap (~$100).
      You're probably best off just getting a white gi for your first one, since it's the most traditional color. If you really want a colored gi then you can get a blue one. I would stay away from other colors for your first gi since some tournaments/ schools don't allow them.
      Each brand has their own sizing chart you can use to select the right size for you.
      Fighter's Market is a really good website if you live in the US or Canada. You can also check with your school to see if they get special discounts on any gis and to try on gis so you can get an idea of what size you take.

    I guess it works specially fine against people grinding your legs with their elbows?

    • @JFullerUCSB
      @JFullerUCSB 7 років тому +2

      Not really, IMO. It's part of jiu-jitsu. Try to break their posture and dislodge their arms if they're doing that, or transition into a submission/sweep. It's hard to dig your elbows into someone's thighs if they've just broken your posture.

    • @danpearman270
      @danpearman270 6 років тому +3

      Gotta agree with Jeremy Fuller - it's a legit technique. Remember, there's a difference between pain and injury: someone digging in their elbow is just pain, ignore it if you can until you can use it to transition or break their posture. Assuming they're only doing it on one side, they're pretty much giving you a perfect opportunity to slip them into a leg triangle choke. If they're doing it on both sides at once, they have no support to stop you breaking their posture.
