The Origin and Transmission of the Great Compassion Mantra
Thousand-Light King of Tranquil Dwelling Tathagata: In a past life, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Guanyin) heard the Great Compassion Mantra while in the presence of the Thousand-Light King of Tranquil Dwelling Tathagata. At that time, Avalokitesvara was only a First Stage Bodhisattva, but upon hearing this mantra, the Bodhisattva immediately entered a state of serene joy and quickly advanced to the Eighth Stage of Bodhisattvahood.
Vows and Manifestation:
Avalokitesvara vowed to spread this mantra throughout the world to bring benefit and happiness to all sentient beings. Due to the Bodhisattva's sincerity and determination, there was an immediate response, resulting in the manifestation of the Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes, symbolizing Avalokitesvara’s immense compassion and protective power.
The Structure and Significance of the Great Compassion Mantra
Eighty-Four Verses, Four Hundred and Fifteen Characters: The Great Compassion Mantra consists of eighty-four verses and four hundred and fifteen Chinese characters. Each verse embodies different manifestations, wisdom, and merits of Avalokitesvara and various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
The Power of the Divine Mantra:
Due to the mantra’s powerful and miraculous efficacy, it is also referred to as the "Great Compassion Divine Mantra." This mantra is regarded as a supreme method for purifying all karmic obstacles and fulfilling wishes without hindrance.

Purification of Karmic Obstructions: The Great Compassion Dharani Sutra mentions that reciting the Great Compassion Mantra can cleanse severe karmic obstacles, such as the Ten Evil Deeds and the Five Heinous Crimes, allowing the practitioner to attain a pure body and mind.
