    Pinkie's travels are not suppposed to be realistic, she even lampshades how she managed to form a band that broke up is an afternoon, breaking reality for comedy is funny and Pinkie's thing and I loved it :). I thought Twilight and Pinkie were both great in this episode. The main problems were that the Yaks were completely unlikeable, until the very end and even then not much better. Maybe they need to do a Lost Treasure of Griffinstone type of episode for them next season. The other issue was that the moral and the conclusion were easy to see coming but I do not know how they could have changed that. And why Twiligh did not wear her crown in either of the episodes when they were formal princess occasions? But I do not care about how Spike is potrayed, he was fine in my opinion.

    • @CybeargPlays
      @CybeargPlays 9 років тому

      Sara Samaletdin You predicated that Pinkie Pie's travels would be for nothing and, rather than finding the authentic Yak culture, she'd simply give it up and try to welcome them "the pony way"? Because, while I thought that is what SHOULD happen, it isn't what I thought was GOING to happen, so it was still a twist.

    • @sarasamaletdin4574
      @sarasamaletdin4574 9 років тому +1

      The moral and solution was pretty obvious from the point when there was the montage of yak's complaining about things not being perfect. But Pinkie's traveled were such a distraction and so ammusing I forgot the solution for a while. So it did not ruin the episode or anything.

    I feel like the show has more of a running streak of negatively portraying other species outside of ponies more than male characters. Changelings=evil, Chimera=evil, Dragons=jerks, Griffons=jerks, Yaks=jerks etc.

    Worst thing about Princess Spike was that the big disaster Spike caused came from him trying to HELP Twilight and not reap the benefits of being a princess so if he was being an ass or not he still would've caused the disaster by doing the job he was supposed to do in the first place.

    • @sarasamaletdin4574

      Dolan Duk I think it would be more acceptable for people if Spike didn't have that brief selfish streak where he started demanding favors in Twilight's name. Up to that point, he was genuinely trying his best, but he simply didn't have the experience to make wise decisions, despite his attempts.

    • @funcoolfunfun
      @funcoolfunfun 9 років тому

      ***** I don't mind an episode being predictable, since even some of the better ones (including Pinkie Pride, my favorite episode) are predictable.
      I personally found it to at least be funnier than Appleoosa's most wanted and The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone.
      And Spike would have started abusing his position sooner or later, regardless of Cadance's intervention.
      As for why Celestia and Luna only appear in the beginning, I think the reason is that none of the characters in the episode thought to talk to them about the problems.

    • @RockinStrings
      @RockinStrings 9 років тому

      funcoolfunfun I respect your opinion but I have to disagree with you. The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone was, in my opinion, much better than Princess Spike, Party Pooped and Appleoosa's Most Wanted combined.

    • @funcoolfunfun
      @funcoolfunfun 9 років тому

      Rockin' Strings Here are my biggest problems with Lost Treasure of Griffonstone, and why it, to me, is the second weakest episode of the season so far:
      1. The comedy somehow felt... lackluster. The only really funny joke was when Rainbow acted like Twilight and had her mane styled to look like her.
      2. Something about the tone felt... off. It wasn't mean spirited, but it all felt just... unpleasant.
      3. Gilda. Despite her being reformed, she's still one of my least favorite characters, and what little new information we got of her didn't do much with how it was used.
      4. The town of Griffonstone. I'll just say it: I couldn't care less about the town if I tried. As to why, go to Deviantart and look up FlyingBrickAnimation's review of the episode.
      Party Pooped is my fourth favorite episode of the season so far because it's one of the funnier episodes of the season, the Yak's had interesting designs (more interesting than any of the Griffons), it somehow feels a lot more upbeat, and the information we found out about Pinkie was both hilarious and it made total sense for her character.

    • @funcoolfunfun
      @funcoolfunfun 9 років тому

      ***** Regardless of the problems Princess Spike has as a story (and I admit,despite still finding it good, it DOES have its share of problems, which is why it's still the third weakest episode of the season for me), I still enjoy it more than TLToG if only because I care about Spike more than I care about the Griffons, and it's at least more lighthearted.
      The "Put the hay in the apple and eat the candle" line was still funny, despite it being similar to a joke from Castle Sweet Castle. Plus, I actually laughed a little at the way the ending abruptly cuts off.

    Yea i know right? Celestia forbid, Spike ever develops!
    About Pinkie traveling to Yak Yakistan and back in (what she states) "most of the afternoon" would be unacceptable ..... if it was any pony other then Pinkie.
    Pinkie is.... Pinkie, i don't know, maybe she folded the space/time continuum or something. I am still paying of the medical bills caused by my temporally insanity that caused by that time i tried to understand Pinkie Pie, so i stopped questioning her.
    Oh and honestly Pinkie having files about every pony, was also a tiny bit creepy.
    Also, someone should place casedias in random places of Twilights castle, that will be hilarious.

    Princess Spike...I approached it with the same mindset as Power Ponies: it didn't need to exist, so I could just watch the opening and the end and basically fill in the middle with everything that I needed to know. I didn't enjoy it in the slightest, either, and I found your viewpoints to be a very good interpretation on what was presented.
    As someone studying diplomacy, Party Pooped was actually pretty good. The Yaks were...undeniably a stereotypical interpretation of what we view foreign dignitaries as and probably how they view us, but the kudos of the episode go to Pinkie. She was going above and beyond to try to ensure that everything was perfect, which was so nice to see, and her ending characterization was just a delight. Out of all the episodes written by former Johnny Test writers, this one actually feels the most put together and enjoyable.
    Great video, and I can't wait to see your next one.

    Thank you! I thought I'd be hearing these points made a lot more than I have, so props to you. The only point where I differ all that much is that Princess Spike is the one I'm 50/50 on (not so much because there was anything I particularly liked as because the bad stuff was still fairly painless to me), and Party Pooped is the one that eventually bottomed out for me. Pinkie Pie's journey was pretty good, but even without the yaks - who I agree were the worst part - there was more than a little humor I thought was lame.
    I do wish there'd been more focus on Pinkie Pie's character arc though. I have to admit, I don't think I fully appreciated just how far that went where she's concerned.

    Thanks for defending my dragon Spike. 'Princess Spike' bored me because we are back to Spike's pity party that began with 'Power Ponies' and continued through the 'Equestrian Games'. I have no doubt next season we'll have another Spike as poor passed over.
    Party Pooped: Honestly, I thought this episode would be when Pinkie gives up party planning for a bit and Ponyville had to manage without her. I got the same impression as you, that there was second episode with Pinkie's travels, but they crammed it into one. I think the writers got sloppy because, 'its a filler episode' no one cares. Worse than a case of senioritis.

    Again party pooped feels like two different episodes get smashed into one, like the season 3 finale, which leads to a super fast pacing left no time for the audiences to properly consider what just happened. Pinkie pie travel through the whole Equestria and the solution of the yak yak party has no real connection,what she learn in this episode do not require the whole travelling thing. Just imagine it get cut into two episode, one is pinkie pie travel everywhere and interact with all kinds of pony, the other was when pinkie pie not in town, the other Mane 5 struggles to prepare a party then find the part cave and learns that preparing party is not as easy as it looks.
    As for Spike, I start to think that Hasbro hates him and forbid the writers writes any good story about him.

    This episode didn't pile on Spike's negative qualities much at all. It just suddenly wanted Spike to be at fault so they could make a tenuous-at-best connection to the events. Spike really isn't the bad guy here, that's just a charade to cover up a poorly structured story.
    Every major thing that goes wrong at the end- the water main, the trees falling over, even that polo game if you want to count it- occurred without Spike acting out of selfish intent. So his big, heartfelt speech at the end means absolutely nothing. The episode wants the characters, and audience, to blame Spike for things that were largely out of his control. The real thing to be blamed is the poor scheduling, which has construction going on the day of the Summit, and didn't give Twilight one night of sleep (which admittedly, might have been her own doing).
    If we have to put blame on a person, it's Cadence. She suddenly gives this intense, vague order to a kid, and apparently didn't take into account anything that Twilight had to do while she napped. But if Twilight really didn't have other duties between her nap and those few meetings, then all those diplomats are jackasses for thinking they can walk into the Princess's royal quarters and make her take care of every inconvenience that comes up. Inconveniences, I'll point out, that Spike apparently managed to resolve pretty well!
    Honestly, this episode does a great job illustrating the hydra-like situation of massive, organized gatherings. The problem is that early on, it's setting up that this well meaning, put upon kid is meant to take the fall.
    Also, although I didn't hear this name the first time I watched this, "dragon sneeze trees?" I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking of the personal hell Spike must be in from these things. I can't stand my own hay fever.
    Something else I really liked though - Cadence. We get the impression that she's running around trying to make sure things go smoothly. But even more impressive, she actually talks to Spike like he's actually a child. Besides that one poorly thought-out and ill timed request, she takes a gentle and patient, yet firm and expecting tone with him. She suspects he probably won't make the right decision, but understands how it's from a lack of physical maturity and experience.

    Great review I liked what you said about Pinkie Pie and her character development and I thought her scenes were the best parts of the episode. Overall the episode was alright, the Yaks who were unlikable violent jerks, they really brought down the episode. As for Princess Spike I didn't like it and it felt like a step down from the Equestia Games. I don't think a lot of people will agree with me, but I think Equestria Games is the best Spike episode, he screws up and grows as a character without me disliking the episode. That didn't happen in Princess Spike, I thought Spike was annoying and I didn't like what he was doing.

  • @mayborneflower

    Well, at least we're in full agreement about Party Pooped. Stay shiny, Celly.

    • @mayborneflower
      @mayborneflower 9 років тому

      The major complaint with the episode is not Pinkie, many people--- detractors included, cite as a highlight in this episode. The problem we have is that the Yaks aren't even characters, just a joke. And not even a good one. One joke that over stays its welcome for most of the episode. Oh, and Spike nearly starts a war because the writers forgot that he could play the piano!
      Also, it is not random stupidity that makes a good joke, nor is it logic that kills humor. Good jokes are built off of cleverness, surprise, suffering, timing, and reactions. Jokes are ruined when they are thrown haphazardly, grow predictable so as to be repetitive, bring lasting harm, and so on. Ya'know, like the Yaks. Now please, either learn to read or get an education in what it means to be humorous before you talk to me about good humor. Now good day, sir.

      _"Oh, and Spike nearly starts a war because the writers forgot that he could play the piano!"_
      I don't think Spike not playing the piano himself means that the writers forgot that he's a good piano player (though considering it has probably been a long time since we saw Spike do that, they might forgot) but more that he's afraid that his piano playing may not be perfect enough for the very unpleasable yaks and that they might smash even more property, so he decided to go with a self-playing piano.

    I loved mlp. But i hated their representation of race. The one character who is explictly black (the zebra with the mohawk) gets her house ruined by the mane 6 attack and she is expected to be okay with it cause the mane 6 learned their lesson about not attacking ponies who dont conform to their ideas of a good pony. I actually stopped watching the show for a while because i hated that episode so much. But eventually i stopped watching because i didnt give a fuck about the ponies anymore. The moment rarity made fun of the zebra's hair and called it ugly was the moment i realized i cannot be emotionally invested in these pieces of shit anymore.

    I was fine with Princess Spike--didn't care too much for the story and such, but I enjoyed the character interactions enough that I thought it was sufficiently entertaining.
    I really enjoyed Party Pooped, though. All this decrying of "negative male stereotypes" is just... ridiculous, in my opinion. It's like all the ridiculousness of the "not enough female characters that meet our arbitrary guidelines" that feminists push has somehow flipped around, and I'll say the same thing I say when people whine about the portrayal of female characters:
    The show isn't obligated to have male characters. Let it do what it wants to do. Why is there this strange "we need portrayals of *gender X* that represents people we would be comfortable being friends with IRL"? It's silly.

    the reason spike gets so much hate is that he isnt a cute female pony.
    the mane 6 are "out of character" and do stupid crap all the time for the sake of rule of fun/cool but since they are the waifus of thousands of bronies they get whiteknighted to death.
    i see him as the average 13 year old boy trying find his place in the world,and like most kids he usually fails or gets unlucky.
    he is a very competent boy to me,being an apprentice/assistant to 2 equestrian princesses,saving the crystal empire twice and generally being self sufficient.
    then we have people who think Twilight and Rarity abuse him for free slave labor,despite being very loving and protective of him.

      Fan Jiang yup,Spike and CMC episodes are usually the weakest ones,just dumb kids getting in trouble and hijinks ensuing.
      its much easier to use him as a buttmonkey to set up jokes in the show than to make an interesting story for him.
      but he still has a pretty sweet life,being practically royalty,living in a huge castle and traveling all over world.

    This would have made an excellent Rarity episode. If Rarity had to deal with the yaks the whole time. Show them around and let them maybe stay with her or she had to fit them for some sort of outfit to recognize the friendship between equestria and yakyakistan. Rarity had to be polite even when she didn't want to because the yaks were destroying everything. Twilight would be constantly telling Rarity just to let it go. Let them do what they want because we want to be friends with them. Then in the end Rarity puts her hoof down and tells the yaks how disrespectful and rude they are. Maybe the yaks leave and are still mad or maybe they are sorry but twilight and Rarity realize that it's important to be able to stand up to people if they treat others with such disrespect and rudeness regardless of their position of importance. Also the yaks could learn that friendship means respecting each other and in some cases they will have to sacrifice their comfort.

    By the way, Spike was able to play piano on his own back in Over a Barrel, so technically the reliance on an automatic piano is a step backward for him--not just a talent denial.

    No offense, but you were really pessimistic towards these episodes, I know your job as a reviewer is to review, but I found both of these episodes moderately enjoyable, they're not perfect, but they were surely better then some of the episodes we've had over the years. But the only part in "party pooped" where I think your rage was justified is where spike was shown playing a piano, but it turned out the piano was playing itself, I MEAN THEY GAVE SPIKE ONE CHARACTER TRAIT, AND THEN SHAT ALL OVER IT IN THE NEXT SCENE JUST FOR THE SAKE OF PROGRESSING THE PLOT! Ugh, its times like these where I wish the writers weren't completely brain dead....

    With the exception of the season premiere and the 100th episode I can't really say I've enjoyed this season so far. I can't tell if I'm growing out of the show or if it's getting worse. Once again we get this cool new idea that can change the dynamic of the show (Princess Twilight, The Magic Map Table) only for it to be increasingly mediocre slice of life episode.

    Princess Spike: FUCK THIS EPISODE! My god can Spike catch a fucking break. For once he did something right and he has to be scolded by Cadance and the episode does everything in its power to make her right. Ya worst episode every to be made.
    Party Poop: Worst pinkie episode to be made. Seriously the yaks are annoying and not even funny even when you vision them as annoying people you met. Not to mention it is so cringy with its humor especially with Twilight and that fucking quesadilla joke. Also slap in happy ending is way too force.

  • @vixianaa
    @vixianaa 9 років тому

    What frustrated me the most about last weeks episode is the fact that pinkie set off to bring something authentic back from Yakyakistan and.... SHE DOES. the authentic yak sled a yak child was playing on that transports her all the way back to ponyville. AND YET THEY DONT MENTION IT. THE SLED IS COMPLETELY IGNORED.

    • @vixianaa
      @vixianaa 9 років тому +1

      This lessens my frustration none. And it could've been a better use of deus ex machina to have it be used as the 'authentic' thing pinkie went in search of.

    • @vtech325
      @vtech325 9 років тому

      Why would the Yaks care about a sled?
      What would Pinkie even use it for?

    • @ClioCamilleIsADemon
      @ClioCamilleIsADemon 9 років тому

      Aryana Hill I thought during the episode that that was going to be used. It was a really annoying red herring to anyone trying to predict the end.

    • @vixianaa
      @vixianaa 9 років тому

      vtech325 apparently you didn't pay very close attention to the episode. Pinkie went to yakyakistan specifically to bring back something that was 'authentically' yak. Because that was the cause of the yaks temper tantrums. The ponies were trying to reproduce things from yakyakistan and nothing was 'yak' enough. The sled would have been, since it was a yak sled.

    • @vtech325
      @vtech325 9 років тому

      Aryana Hill Yes, but I safely assumed she intended to bring back something she could actually *use*.
      How could she possibly use that sled to impress the Yaks?
      And why would the Yaks even care?
      None of them would even be able to fit on the thing.
