I came here after reading about it on wikipedia; According to a June 2008 article from The Guardian, "Two weeks before [the release of The Bourne Supremacy (2004)], [director Paul Greengrass] got together with its star, Matt Damon, came up with a new ending and phoned the producers saying the new idea was "way" better, it would cost $200,000 and involve pulling Damon from the set of Ocean's 12 for a re-shoot. Reluctantly the producers agreed-the movie tested 10 points higher with the new ending"

They have done that trick several times. The first time when Bourne arrives at the harbour in the first movie, but the car they used was to small, so you could see Damon running behind it.
The music director of this film is brilliant, the music is iconic and very edgy, I won't try hard to compare it to the rhythm of James Bond's music, but for me, Bourne's music has always been ringing in my life after this film was published.
John Powell would be awsome to do the next James Bond. When John Barry quit the franchise the other composers could not even make exciting music. They were all boring compositions. No class! And that's the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so (from 976-CREOLEMAN).
Seeing alternate endings can really teach us screenwriters a good thing or two. Thanks for the upload. Good original ending, even better official ending.
if they used this ending, then Ultimatum wouldn't be the same, especially that excellent opening scene of Ultimatum. also there was something about the chemistry of Bourne and Pam, that despite never meeting face to face, they always talk like friends who've known themselves for years. this ending ruins that chemistry, by throwing them into some losey hospital scene with very little to nothing important dialogues
As a huge fan of the first 3 I’m glad I saw this but it made absolutely no sense and I’m glad they didn’t use it. The most elusive man in the world and you leave him unsecured in a room with a window? Come on man!
Just this morning I went out to buy one of three remaining DVD players at a second Walmart so my daughters can enjoy a Bourne marathon. You'd think I was asking for a rotary phone. We've already done Indiana Jones, Resident Evil and Matrix. Take care and be safe 😷
As Bourne was written chance and circumstance played a lot into what happened to him...whereas Bourne himself wanted peace...so that moment where he sinks down into the snow to slip away is somewhat fitting
I really like the first part where he just ends up laying on the snow, it makes the ending way more sad and makes his character more natural. Like after this movie we almost haven't seen him remembering or sorry about Marie's death and that scene just suggesting a thought that he is so lost after what happened and have nowhere to go. It also could've explain why they almost didn't bring memories about her character that much in a 3rd movie, the scene is kinda strong emotionally, shows us everything he feels, his regret and etc, and after that they could just focus on the main plot. But instead of this we've got a very short scene in the train when he repeats some moments from the last two movies and after that they literally pretend Marie never existed and I find it really weird
Although the cinema ending fits the bourne franchise and persona much better, I personally prefer the alternative. It works perfectly in Supremacy, which was full of unknowns, loss and depression. Such a melodramatic ending wouldn't work with Identity or Ultimatum, but it's perfect for Supremacy (maybe cut back on the dialogue tho). The moment the music sounds, and we see bourne walking off like it's just another day, just makes the whole movie somehow sadder and more thought-provoking in general. It's the same song Extreme Ways, but it gives off a completely different feel compared to joy and hope in Identity, and surprise and resilience in Ultimatum, it just floods out loneliness and uncertainty here. Unfortunately, this ending wouldn't have done well for an action film, but I'm so glad we still got a taste of it.;))
The point of both endings is to convey that Bourne is no longer motivated by trying to find out about his past. I think this one conveys it well and I don't think theatrical does, at least not on it's own. However, theatrical one has the best line in the series, so it's probably better that they changed.
The real ending should have been Bourne saying, “Get some rest, Pam. You look tired,” then him disappearing behind the tram/NY subway (like this one) with the music playing. Perfect.
In Russia it’s not uncommon to see people collapse at the side of the road, on open ground or random public places, in my experience they’re usually blind drunk. In the summer, spring or fall it’s not such an issue but in the winter depending on where they are those people won’t make it home. It was also common to see cars crashed and abandoned in the evening often with lights on, doors open keys in the ignition and the driver wandering off away from the incident, also blind drunk. Majority of these instances were on a Friday because (in late 1990’s) the majority of people received their wage in cash at close of business Friday afternoon, you can guess where they went immediately after that.
woahh....i 've been rewatch Bourne movies for many times in many years, I didn't know there is this alternate ending ! What a great day I have today. thanks for sharing this !!!!
So they spent two movies trying to kill him and knowing how good he is and then once they got him they not only not kill him but put him in a room with a window that isn’t secure.

Awesome. The first 4 movies (including Legacy) were beyond art - perfection. I don't know what Matt Damon was thinking when he made the last one? It is like the sublime quality of Robert Ludlum's (author of the books) writing was substituted with a 30 minute conference call on how the last movie should go.
Thank you sir, spot on! Greengrass and Damon went way too far with the last one trying to squeeze more gold from the goose, real garbage. Makes me think "Rocky 12' Pathetic.
A lot of people are saying how this ending is actually not bad (but the actual ending in the movie is much better. No arguments there.) Actually this ending isn't just "not bad", but really completely bad, and quite lame and cliched in many aspects, even without the final ending used in the movie for comparison. First, Jason wouldn't be caught dead or injured out in the open like that, ever. Even when he "didn't want to do this anymore", his determination to survive has always reigned. If he felt he was getting "sick" or about to collapse he always found a way to continue to at least find a safe and hidden spot to tend to his wounds or needs. His number one rule was always finding a safe spot first. He used a stolen bottle of vodka (high alcohol content) as a sterilizing agent for his bullet wounds and in Paris, when the first assassin went to his apartment, and again when their hotel was being investigated, he knew immediately to get the hell out and find a new place. Even in winter when he beat up the two police officers after he was questioned for sleeping in the park, he instinctively knew to discard his jacket to avoid easy identification. Lying in a field of white snow out in the open in a metropolitan area surrounded by apartment buildings dressed in black is exactly the opposite of avoiding easy identification. And that slow fall to the ground - lame. Next, he went to Moscow to apologize to the Neski girl, something Pamela Landy shouldn't know, so there is no reason for her to be there or for him to be rescued by the CIA - in case the producers (who at first objected against the reshooting of the ending that was ultimately used in the movie) forgot, the CIA, or the corrupt branch who knew about him at least, wanted him dead, so it is more realistic that if they found him, they'd put a few extra bullets in him to make sure he died rather than putting him in hospital. Supposing that the local police found him first - he'd be guarded at the hospital by local police for questioning later about him stealing a cab etc. Pamela would have gotten nowhere near him even if she did somehow found out about him. Nicky has no idea about Jason and the Neski case, she said so repeatedly herself that Jason (as far as she rightly knew) never worked in Berlin, so he couldn't have been discovered by Nicky. Abbott is already dead by the end and so is Kirill (supposedly) - how did Pamela and her team know about him? Waking up in the hospital: jumping out a window any higher than 3 floors would cause death, less than that you'd be lucky to walk away without broken bones and this time there's no convenient dead body to use as a cushion. The super lame and cliched part is when he's shown not in his hospital bed and someone says "he's gone!" (Oh the shock horror.) and everyone frantically looking for him. That is so expected and cliche and undos all the work previously done to make the (as of this one) 2 movies surprising at every turn, yet still showcase the character's qualities. Which brings me to the next point: not only does he survive jumping out the window (or climbing down it with a broken or injured arm in a sling??), he is seen on the right hand side of the screen, walking up to the red lights supposedly waiting to cross, and then a bus drives by, blocking him, and the camera pans to the left: it pans too far and shows people crossing the street and Jason is not one of the pedestrians. Okay great, the point is? Yes, I know the point is to show how he can quickly disappear in a crowd again, but, this particular way of shooting the scene (unlike the scene in Italy in the Bourne Identity) doesn't show that, instead it just looks like the camera panned too much and showed the group of pedestrians crossing the road. If say, it panned slower and still showed the street corner where the pedestrians were waiting moments ago, and Jason is not there, then that would have at least been a bit better. Instead it just looks like Jason headed down the wide open street instead of crossing it and the camera simply wandered off. So glad they changed it. Can't imagine why the producers were against a new ending, this ending is just so bad. If they used this ending it would have ruined the whole movie.
Every time I watch the Bourne movies and the end credits come on, I get up and walk with a purposeful stride around my house while the music plays. For THAT moment, I am Bourne. = P
I feel this significantly diminishes Bourne's mystique and all round badassery. He has to walk away from a brutal day rampaging throughout Moscow. He cannot just collapse in the snow. Also a little plot hole here. The Russian FSB forces and government are hardly just going to hand over Bourne to the Americans after what he did there because it will be them picking him up in the snow. This also pre-emptively lessens any stakes going forward in future films because if he is captured, then all the CIA does is offer him his old job back? The fear and danger of the system constantly trying to get Bourne is now gone. We need the CIA to be shady, to have competing factions up against one another with differing agendas and whilst Landy may not be evil or one of the true bad guys, she does have authority and gravitas who wants to bring Bourne in. But this scene just kills her as a character. Come work for me now? It doesn't work. She still needs to be a bit of a threat to Bourne. They can work together against a common enemy in Bourne 3 but they were never going to be best pals as this scene is attempting to do. This ending is too nice which robs the series of drama and tension. The real ending perfectly highlights Bourne's audacity and legend. You are never going to get him even as the entire machinery of the Western intelligence community is desperate to nab him.
This ending is better! And it explains how he survived his injuries. But we would lose the badass opening to Ultimatum so I'm happy with the direction they decided on.
I didn't know this existed. I did wonder how Bourne just walked off the beating he took in the film, but he knows people? However, Bourne just disappearing out a window and walking away to vanish as a bus passes? Oh, some things never change...
Fun Fact: They included this ending on the 2009 Blu-Ray as apart of the deleted scenes in the bonus features. And on top of it, all of the deleted scenes are in 4:3 open matte. XD
In the Bourne franchise we have some of the most brilliant action films ever made, not to have won Best Picture awards. I am happy and respectful of the way we have seen it. If ever Greengrass or Liman puts out a Directors Cut, I'd see that too. And it would be brilliant too. Just saying.
I may be in the minority but I don't actually like the theatrical ending, where he tells Landy to get some rest. I'm not saying this is any better, but essentially reusing one of the strongest scenes in the film as the ending reduces it to a gag. It also doesn't explain why he suddenly decided to go to the States. TBH, they could've just ended it with him collapsing in the park and the camera panning up to the buildings. I kind of like the idea of an ambiguous ending to this kind of story.
I wholeheartedly agree with you but I do think the final version they went with made a lot more sense given how connected it was to the third movie. At the start of Ultimatum, it literally picks up where it left off with Supremacy, which had Bourne escaping the police in Moscow with his injuries still intact after the events of the previous film. Here, he's being treated which wouldn't add up for the sake of continuity. I do prefer this ending for the reason you mentioned but for the intro of Ultimatum to make sense this scene would need to be cut out... or they could have just revised the intro for Ultimatum. Either way I still prefer the transition into the credits in The Bourne Identity the most since that had the best flow and best vibes for me.
Not bad. I prefer the one they used, though they messed it up by writing Ultimatum around it. If I have a quibble with this one it's that they wouldn't have been so dumb as not to expect him to vanish immediately.
Where the hell did this come from? Thought I'd seen all the Bourne extras but this is magic. As others have said, imagine if they'd have let this play out. I did like that "Why did you call me David" bit, though. Thanks uploader!
Glad they didn't use this ending. Just seems ridiculous after watching everything previous to this, to finally have Bourne in their custody, and to leave him in an empty room with a window, and with one guard by the door. That was just stupid lol. And for Bourne to be caught in that way after everything previous just seems out of place and incompetent. Which is not a word that would ever be used in connection with Bourne. The actual ending in the film is far better than this.
I am glad they did not go with this one. (SPOILERS) The theatrical ending we saw was actually the beginning of the awesome New York mayhem in the third Movie. And I thought that was a brilliant way to tease fans of what was coming
No... This one is totally expected (did someone expect him NOT to disappear from the hospital and NOT to dissappear behind the bus?), the dialog is bland, and him learning his name doesn't really carry a punch. Kinda rushed writing here.
LOVE THIS FRANCHISE!!! Favourite scene the opening in the first. Favourite action moment in all the parts every time he meets his antagonist they lock eyes brilliant. AND LOVE THE MUSIC REALLY MOTIVATING
When you've got the most dangerous man the CIA has ever dealt with, it's important to leave him unguarded on a first floor hospital room with a window that can open a not chained to the bed. Makes a ton of sense........ (sarcasm) The whole point of the success of the Bourne movies was they weren't stupidly unbelievable like the bond movies. Really glad they didn't use this ending.
Yeah, not a fan of this ending. Maybe if it ended with him just passing out in the snow, they then could have used it to set the tone in the next movie in some way. The scene in the hospital is just weak - it makes very little sense. It was very prudent of Paul to reshoot the ending.
I came here after reading about it on wikipedia;

I can't agree more! Best comment so far!
He collapsed on purpose so he could then find out what they wanted.
I am glad they did not go with this ending. It made Bourne meeting Pamela at the end of Ultimatum much more impactful.
But what didn’t was that they demoted her by yet again introducing another CIA big bad above her
''Get some rest Pam, You look tired'' just makes the movie come together perfectly... Epic

Thats right .. after a movie like that You Are The Man.
Wow, what an amazing alternative ending. He escapes out of a hospital window. WOW!!! 🤩
I'm sure it was from the 8th floor, too
I feel this significantly diminishes Bourne's mystique and all round badassery.
You are never going to get him even as the entire machinery of the Western intelligence community is desperate to nab him.
exactly!!
What an ending. Truely Bourne style
This ending is better! And it explains how he survived his injuries. But we would lose the badass opening to Ultimatum so I'm happy with the direction they decided on.
2:59 that "He's gone" yelp sounds sooooo cringe
Thank GOD they didn't choose this one
Thank God, they didn't put this version.
I didn't know this existed. I did wonder how Bourne just walked off the beating he took in the film, but he knows people? However, Bourne just disappearing out a window and walking away to vanish as a bus passes? Oh, some things never change...
That was the point of the beginning of Ultimatum, Bourne needed to tend to his injuries on the way out of the city.
Queue Extreme Ways...
And you still get a good ending ;)
Thanks for the upload man!
A lot of people are fawning over Julia Stiles. Am I the only guy fawning over Joan Allen?
Let's see..."he's gone" vs. "get some rest, Pam..you look tired" - the one they picked is by far the best//
I can picture Bourne going batshit crazy and bagging his stuff immediately after Pam left the room
Julia Stiles was so cute back then.
no , she was actually ugly .
Wow you never know what you can find in the DVD
I don't know if it was intentional or on accident but this is a pretty nice easter egg
Sometimes I wanna vanish like bourne
I may be in the minority but I don't actually like the theatrical ending, where he tells Landy to get some rest. I'm not saying this is any better, but essentially reusing one of the strongest scenes in the film as the ending reduces it to a gag. It also doesn't explain why he suddenly decided to go to the States. TBH, they could've just ended it with him collapsing in the park and the camera panning up to the buildings. I kind of like the idea of an ambiguous ending to this kind of story.
No the reason being is because this film and ultimatum dub tail
Blah blah blah
Supremacy is the best of the series ... and one of the best spy movies - however fanciful - ever.
The director was right NOT to put this on...
Hospital is anticlimactic but they at least could've kept the lying down in the snow moment
"Hes gone!" Epic song plays. Both endings are awesome in my opinion.
thank god they didn't use this ending
I agree, very cheesy lol
I think this ending makes more sense. I like it much better.
Love the music. I'd preferred to hear an instrumental...
Not bad. I prefer the one they used, though they messed it up by writing Ultimatum around it.
If I have a quibble with this one it's that they wouldn't have been so dumb as not to expect him to vanish immediately.
Alexander Barsby I know. He’s Jason Bourne! What did you expect?!
I dont like this scene so much BUT that ending and the way he disappears behind the tram is just pure magic and should've been in the final cut!
Where the hell did this come from? Thought I'd seen all the Bourne extras but this is magic. As others have said, imagine if they'd have let this play out. I did like that "Why did you call me David" bit, though. Thanks uploader!
Yeah I found hidden on the dvd. I had to decrypt the disc to get to it. It’s like a hidden Easter egg.
Song is perfectly suited for this trilogy
Pam had the most common sense about Bourne instead of hunting him down or killing him, she would prefer having him back with the Agency
. When the tram passes and he`s gone.....excellent. I have yet to see a film with Matt Damon in that I didn`t like.
Always loved that Moby track!
Woah, this was amazing.
love the outro
But it's better when he calls her from the Rooftop!
nothing beats the disappearing act
I am glad they did not go with this one.
(SPOILERS)
The theatrical ending we saw was actually the beginning of the awesome New York mayhem in the third Movie. And I thought that was a brilliant way to tease fans of what was coming
It is quite good. Thanx for posting it.
Wow, never knew of this ending until today, I like the ending from the movie better.
Any ending is good as long as it has "Get some rest, Pam, you look tired".

Less sense than looking at top secret stuff with your back to huge untinted window?
3:14, he pulled a batman there
batman pulled a jason bourne
I love this one ... Better than original
Yeah, not a fan of this ending. Maybe if it ended with him just passing out in the snow, they then could have used it to set the tone in the next movie in some way. The scene in the hospital is just weak - it makes very little sense. It was very prudent of Paul to reshoot the ending.
Love the song...
The begin music 🎶 is extraordinary..
Is this ending compatible with the intro from the 3rd film
The prior would suggest these two sequals were shot back to back like life
I like that ending better, it gives hope.
