My love for Illusion of Gaia is HUGE! my top three favorite SNES games hands down. The beautiful graphics, music and game play are astounding! I always wanted a sequel for this game (never knew it was under the Soul Blazer tree of games however). I wish your review was longer Derek cant get enough of your awesome review style. Most definitely worthy to be in the game collection! ^>^
I loved this game when I was little! My sister actually still has our original cartridge. Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana were our other favorites! You gave it a great review! Brought back so many memories!
I'm so glad i found this channel. Keep finding amazing games to play that I've never heard of. Didn't have a lot of money growing up so I only had a handful of SNES games.
I loved Illusion of Gaia. I can freely admit that when the N64 and PSX were kinda going strong, I got really big into emulating SNES games when I was, like, ten, and I fell completely in love with Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma. They're, really, my Final Fantasy/Chrono Trigger. I've been watching your channel for a while. You do these games justice, and you'r epretty rad.
Aw yiss, Illusion of Gaia. For being a game where you go all over the world, it tells a very small story. Not a bad thing, just that the whole thing is an exploration on friendship and loneliness. Definitely in my top three for SNES.
I would have a hard time coming up with a definitive top 5 SNES games, but I know this would be in my top 10 at least. But I do have an idea what might be number one...
this was the first game I bought for my own pocket money at the age of 7. I loved it so much despite needing my mum to translate for me 90% of the time.
Oh wow, Illusion of Gaia is great but it’s not worth that much. Over here it’s 14 pounds for a lose cartridge and 65 for boxed and complete with map, but I would pay up to 20 for the cart and 50 for complete max.
Nice review man--this is one of my favorites for the SNES, and one of the few RPGs I kept from "back in the day" and refused to sell...and I guess that means a lot, since I ended up selling Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy III, and Chrono Trigger over this. Big mistakes, but at least I have Illusion of Gaia! I remember not really liking this game when I first played it, since the hit detection seemed strange to me and I was more used to the feel of the Zelda games, but I got over it. That main theme, which plays in the beginning and ending of the game, is one of my favorite VG tunes. Anyway, glad you covered this one and will be covering Terranigma. Let me know if you need any box shots or manual scans of the Japanese version of the game. I'll show it to you on Skype sometime if you're interested.
Even though I had an SNES as a kid (still do), and loved the RPG and ARPG games that it brought us, I still have only played a bit of this game. Picked it up just last year.
Nice review! I recently found your work, and I am very impressed! Oh, quick thing though! There is two other connections to Soul Blazer you didn't mention, but I don't blame you! First of all, the dog, Turbo, which is obvious. The other though comes from the first boss of Soul Blazer himself. While backtracking is minimal, there is one spot where you can, even though there should really be no way at the time. And if you go back to Dao and give the rest of the gems to Gem, you go to a place not even in the manual and see him. Blazer even gets mentioned as well. Still, good review! Looking forward to more!
I remember renting this game from the video store as a kid. I must have been nine or ten at the time and barely understood any of it. It was the most story rich game I'd encountered at the time and I think a lot of it just flew over my head. I just remember growing super frustrated at the first boss (I think) the demon head and hands in the pit in the floor and spending ages trying to beat it. Then having to return the game just after getting to the golden ship. I sadly never picked it up again because it was too frustrating for me at the time.
Was looking for a review on this and you were the first one to pop up! Never played it before but ever since I picked up a Super NT I've been trying to find experiences I missed in my youth on the SNES. Probably gonna take the plunge though at this point it looks like it's going for closer to 30-40 for a complete in box copy. Nice review and take care! :)
I thought about getting one for this review, looks like they were "one size fits all" and can still be gotten, used of course, for around $20 on eBay, from what I've seen. :)
One of my favorite games of all time. Shame I dont have a physical copy of it but I think I’ll remedy that. One of the few I will pay extra for these days.
So much nostalgia... The music really touches me, relaxing and epic at the same time. Didn' t finish it on the 90s. I shoud do now, but don' t find the time... By the way, I'd love to watch an Equinox review from Mr. Derek!
i personally dont like the game much but it holds a special place in my heart because whereas my father got me in to gaming, illusion of gaia was something my mother, not only played but fully completed back in the 90s when my siblings and i were small children. something we have never been able to do to without the internet. we wouldnt have known about the secret dungeon if we hadnt watched her get there. its a personal challenge for us to beat the first boss as Will because we watched her do it while kids. dont try to fight "the red guy" as Will unless you want to be very angry
This was one of my favorite rentals back in the day, but I never owned it, so unfortunately I never got to the parts where you could play as shadow. I always wanted to do those.
Awesome! Looks pretty good for original hardware capture, especially if it's from composite. RGB is king though! I could never go back. Keep doing your videos! I enjoy them all
Thanks a ton man! Yeah RGB is great, but I can't afford the process to switch over just yet, so for the time being I'm capturing in S-Video. In the meantime I get to hear Avalanche Reviews talk all about his XRGB Mini... Jokes on him though, because I can still play House of the Dead II on my Dreamcast! ;)
Awesome! Looks pretty good for original hardware capture, especially if it's from composite. RGB is king though! I could never go back. Keep doing your videos! I enjoy them all
For whatever reason I always find myself alone when talking about Illusion of Gaia. I feel like it should be one of those games everyone remembers and it isn't! I truly enjoyed and felt it when I played it as a kid.
Holy crap, I didn't know Illusions of Gaia was a sequel to Soul Blazer! THAT'S AWESOME! I love this game thru and thru, however it's just a shame that everything didn't always add up in the story, and at times, Will can be rather insensitive to his friends. Great review as always, Derek; you have an eye for the classics!
I found the transformation stuff in this game unique. The fact that your main character didnt really have combat powers until you got MUSCULAR was interesting
I loved this game as a kid! I tried my best to beat it but my 9 year old brain was a little too weak for the puzzles. Such fond memories of this game..
This was my first actual game I played that held my interest, I remember the vampires being my biggest issue as a kid but the music is one thing I love about this game. Especially that moment at the top of the tower before the big fight, I almost never wanna proceed further just cus of it. XD
Holy shit I just got around to playing this game now. I knew it was good but holy fucking god it's so huge and I think it's some of the best writing/localization on the console! I'm not a big fan of secret of mana and so many people rated it higher than this so i put this toward the bottom of my list of games to try. Dumb move on my part. Anybody who hasn't played this game needs to play it now! Holds up great in 2017!
I actually beat Terranigma first because of its high praise and it was also fucking amazing. I didn't like some of the odd translation issues and it was a little too open at times for my tastes personally so I'm actually liking IoG more. But god damn Terranigma is amazing too!
I personally like to include Shade's "Granstream Saga" since it follows those same themes set forth in the Quintet Trilogy, and was made by mostly the same team, including Tomoyoshi Miyazaki if memory serves, who is basically the mind behind the series. The inclusion of that game makes the series neither a trilogy, nor necessarily Quintet though. :)
Some musical themes were overused in this game, that's the only thing that felt dated when I replayed it a couple of years ago. lt is still a very good game, the type that is closely linked to my childhood (a lot more than Zelda 3 on Snes).
Interesting, I actually didn't know that. Don't forget that you could miss those potions in the potion shop though, with the life potion and dark potion. :)
Geeahh. I tried playing this the other day and it just did not do it for me. The feel of the game is very odd, the plot is pretty lacking, and the puzzles were starting to get rather obnoxious (the interlocking series of caves with the statues, of example).
Something happened, but games nowadays (in this case rpgs, but actually overall) have lost that msgic that characterized them in the past. It is not nostalgia, it is a fact. Nowadays RPGs are just about excellent graphics and fetch quests, and a rushed story, that is all.
This game has a very mystical feeling to it. I remember fantasizing about living on raft houses.

The music in this game rocks!!!!!!!!! I remember beating this game. It took me awhile though.
It took me awhile too
The Mummy Queen is what slowed me down. It feels like she took forever to beat.

My local game store was trying to sell Illusion of Gaia for $100....I found another copy for $8.

I believe that is the flip side of not knowing what you have.

I love that you included scanlines in the gameplay videos. Is this by any chance filmed on an XRGB Mini? Or just emulated?
Nah, I play on an old CRT with original hardware, capture through a normal capture card, and then the scanlines are added in post. :)
