  • Is Surface 1 Agent 1:01 possible? Goldeneye's 2nd oldest standing world record was originally set in February 2008 by David Clemens, and has withstood the test of time... so far. Five records which were set before Surface 1 Agent 1:02, including the legendary Dam 52, have all been beaten within the past 2 years... only Runway Agent 22 has stood longer. So why is Surface 1 102 so unbreakable? And might 101 be around the corner? In this video, we look at the history of speedrunning Surface 1 Agent and explain the speedrun to analyze the possibility of a new untied world record.
    Why this speedrunner's record might be unbreakable...

    I think there's an error in the logic of this video. Instead of assuming Clemens had a 1:02.97 and seeing if anyone had faster locks, you should find the 1:02 that has the SLOWEST locks, thereby mandating it had one of the fastest pre-locks runs (best lines, warp etc) in order to be 1:02. Then you should examine the run with the fastest locks. If the disparity between the slowest and fastest locks is greater than or equal to 6 frames, it would provide the additional .16s timesave needed for 1:01.

      @Irie yes, but you also already used 2.x control style so you had an extra .3s of leeway. Goose's analysis uses 2.x as one of the ways to shave the record down which isn't applicable if you already used it. I think we need to find the slowest 1.2 (or technically any 1.x) control style locks.

    • @StayAwayFromMyCat
      @StayAwayFromMyCat 4 роки тому

      Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. He was stating it as though it was fact that the original was definitely 1 frame away from being a 1:03 but it sounded like that was never actually verified. That could completely throw off all the other assumptions made in the video.

    • @bigheadedz1887
      @bigheadedz1887 4 роки тому

      At an absolute maximum it'll be 2 frames. Given the amount of grinding done to try and save the few frames he needs it's beyond unlikely he's magically going to make 4+ frames disappear in such a short level with minimal lag (literally 1 guard). However as another post pointed out, the difference in how long it takes for the slowest 102 lock shots should be compared to the fastest 102 lockshots, this should give a reasonable idea of how many frames you can save during the level which isn't accounted for. Call it "general optimisation on pathing" which is likely to be at least 2-3 frames.

    A lot of replacement power bricks for the N64 give the system 20 watts instead of the normal bricks 19. So the system with out knowing it get a small overclock. You may never notice it but it may give the necessary boost.

    • @EspireMike
      @EspireMike 4 роки тому +4

      Does having a bit more power available on a power brick overclock a machine? I'm pretty sure a device will draw whatever amount of current it needs. And even if it did draw more power, it wouldn't clock the CPU higher. Maybe I am wrong.

    • @west
      @west 4 роки тому +2

      Electrical engineer here and that's interesting information but I'm really not seeing how that would overclock the system. Clocks are crystals that vibrate at a specific frequency when voltage is applied but that does not vary by voltage. The power brick itself takes in AC and outputs DC (old or new bricks will have the same output voltage). So a higher wattage means it is capable of outputting higher current if there is a demand from the system (i.e., using the expansion pak) but it isn't going to "drive" a crystal to a higher frequency. Unless someone can correct me or offer a better explanation, I feel pretty confident that the different power bricks would have no effect on the crystal.

If you start with the bottom lock and stand on the grate as you're aiming at the other locks and move onto the great as you're switching to each lock you can save a few frames there, instead of moving forward AFTER the last lock is shot.

I understand looking up to shoot the locks, but after that, why are they not looking down until they get to the ladder? I noticed that a bunch of the IRL runners didn't look down before it anyway, and they aren't going for the locks. I wonder if it's because they need to line up the path to the ladder first, but how much would those seconds of look-down save?

    What sucks is that N64 Emulation Accuracy has so much further to go to be console accurate. Right now it's at "Good enough" but there's the big problem. Proper emulation of the MIPS architecture the N64's processor use is such a pain in the ass that getting proper amount of lag is surprisingly hard.
    Maybe one day it can be done to make the TAS testing of Goldeneye more useful but that seems to be years away

    A lot of these would need to run on the assumption that it's absolute last frame possible. Considering perfect locks, I'd think it is possible tbh, but barely.

    It could be possible to mayhap shoot at the computer and blow it up for a boost after interacting with it?

    I don't know shit about Goldeneye and I'd know even less about Goldeneye speedruns if it wasn't for your channel but shooting off locks before climbing the ladder is almost certainly the only way any more major time saves can be had. Hypothetically if there is a consistent way to do that though the order a runner shoots the locks need to change. As far as I noticed every run goes clockwise going from 9-12-3-6. If a runner can consistently get 3 to pop before the ladder then you need to determine the most efficient way to break the remaining locks, most likely 6-9-12 then dropping. That's just the idea I had while watching anyway. Who knows what the future record holder will cook up to get this done.

    I see this and immediately think... long, pixel by pixel search of the proper angle for a KF7 spray and pray through the trees, lol. You may not be able to pull off TAS level shots consistently, but it seems plausible that, if you get the proper angle pinpointed, a one in a million lucky shot may take out a lock or at least damage it enough that it falls earlier within a burst and therefore should be the last lock you target once up top.

      @@dariusus9870 I don't think that the most players did notice that the guard changed position and that it can be a boost if so. What's the time loss of using the Sniper vs. the KF7, ignoring the skill for the 100% accuracy the sniper demands? I'm thinking about that guard at the beginning that you kill for the KF7. If you leave him alive, you should be able to get a boost off of him, saving 0.3 seconds, right? Heck, he might be able to shoot at you a second time (since the map is so large and open) that you get a second boost, saving a full 0.6 seconds, skipping the need for the Santos boost and landing you just barely under 1:02.

    • @narusferree6506
      @narusferree6506 4 роки тому

      So if the boost + sniper locks gives us 0.1 and we can find some way of getting the Santos boost, we're looking at 1:02.06, leaving just a couple frames needed. If we can find a reliable setup to consistently shoot off a lock during the approach to the tower, or even just get a single shot off, that might just be the recipe we need.
      In summary, the 1:01 relies on two boosts: the Santos boost and one at the beginning (which, if it becomes incorporated into the run, I dub the Narus boost :D), PLUS hitting a lock during the approach to the tower, PLUS near perfect accuracy with the locks, on top of the already precise movement required.

    Just a question, is 1:02:97 the fastest time that everyone has, of those who have a 1:02? It wasn't clear to me if some other players besides Clemens already have a faster 1:02, which if they did could make up some of the extra frames perhaps?
