I figured out the secret to The Neptunes sound a few years back, and it's purely down to their background in marching band. If you take the rhythms played on a snare / drum in band, and translate it to a chord or note on the triton, it'll sound like them. Take Justin Timberlake's - Like I Love You. The guitar on that is playing that marching band rhythm.
Teddy Riley has blessed us with not only some of the best Michael Jackson productions post-Quincy Jones but also putting the Neptunes on by featuring Pharrell on the drums to "Rump Shaker" and having him do the "S, the double, the U, V" chant on SWV's Human Nature mix to "Right Here" (tying back to Michael Jackson!) Then when Chad Hugo came along they did SWV again for "Use Your Heart" and produced the Total and 112 collab "When Boy Meets Girl". Also, Chad is featured as a saxophonist on the Jay-Z track "The City Is Mine", produced by Teddy Riley. It all comes full circle!

I get your point about using the gear around them, but the Triton WAS a holy grail item back in the day at least to us, around $2,300 which is about $4,200 today. It wasn't cheap and it was THE hot item of the day. Ppl call CS80s and Jupiter 8s holy grail today, but in 1999 very few cared about that stuff. It was all about the Triton and MPC for awhile at least in urban pop. It didnt become a "just have it around" item until the Triton Extreme made it affordable and the amount of older ones built up. I didnt buy one untill a few years ago and it was $550 for an extreme 88. Soon after the plugin was released which is what ill use for triton sounds these days, but still the Triton Extreme 88 is an awesome controller. I wouldnt sample on it or load libraries anymore, but you could if you wanted a Triton beyond what the plugin can do. The original Triton was so well known at the time it was current my tech support business card had one whole side being a tinted pink Triton. (the other side had a Mackie 8 buss) A Triton is what you had if you were serious, maybe a Roland JV2080 but less common. If you were around at the time, you know how often youd see this exact setup: Triton, Mpc, Mackie 8 buss. Youd see Pro Tools around some early but lots of ppl were still using Adats. Honorable mention to the Emu modules like the Orbit and Proteus(es) for that type of production but still way less than even the JV2080/1080.
Pharrell Williams is extremely talented but his success is due to his mindset and the people around him. He came from a great music program in Virginia. Thanks for the video

It’s funny that the neptunes used stock sounds but it was hard for others producers to mimick them successfully. The Neptunes had a style and ascetic that was in another planet.
I’m still dumbfounded about how super simple but classic those Neptunes produced Clipse albums are.
And their music stands up to the test of time. They stood right there next to Kanye, Dre and timbaland and still stood out
I get your point about using the gear around them, but the Triton WAS a holy grail item back in the day at least to us, around $2,300 which is about $4,200 today.
Bro.... You are the DOPEST!
I have learned so many production techniques over the past few years just vibing to your videos. I visualize music, and you help 3-D my perspective 🙏🏿
Like I said, The DOPEST 💪🏿
Dude, you gotta touch on Quincy Jones’ influence on hip hop behind the scenes.
I’m so happy the triton era has passed 😂
lol they made it sound good through mixing but the stock patches on their own are ehhhhhhhhh
@@CantTellYou name a song that wouldn’t have went harder with a seven sample on the MPC..!
The Triton Extreme is one of the Best Korg keyboard workstation of All Time in my humble opinion
I used to go to Sam Ash years ago after high school to learn how to play and the Triton was the 1st keyboard I ran to!!!!! I remember when it had the cd burner I think I still have the the original beat I tried making on there hahahaha and they had a Korg Oasys me and a few homies made a beat on as well.
Its the percussion those drums got so much power but so simple Pharrell the truth.
Never realized the 4 count. 👀 Instant sub 😤
I appreciate the Triton side quest
Great Video Bro Thanks
Pharrell & Chad became 2 of my musical heroes nearly 25 years ago.
He always reminds me of a younger Quincy Jones by the way he moved through the industry, he made his own path.
The Neptunes and That Korg Triton is so much Nostalgia for me which is why i bought it in the Software VST form. would i get the hardware version? yes in a heart beat but id want it brand new and fresh out of the factory. it hurts me to see Chad and Pharrell not on speaking terms. Mp3's,Cds, the late 90's early 2000's, The internet, MTV, Lime wire, Kazaa, The Roller rinks, School Dances, Junior high and Highschool, 106 and Park, Fruity Loops, Playstation, Anime. those were the vibes. Kelis Kaleidoscope, Phillys most Wanted, T.I's Im Serious, Busta Rhymes Genesis, The Clipse Lord Willin had me Glued to Their beats.
The algorithm gave me Earth Wind & Fire the song that defined their sound 🔥
Beat starting around 8:40 is 🔥🔥 what is that?
We need to know
I found it club 2000 by aldous young

Never forgot when i heard Frontin first time i walked from other room to tv. Game changer fr
Another sure shot video by our man on the decks. Great stuff and so sad that p and chad are fighting in court. We need more Neptunes and N.E.R.D. tunes!
