Peter Grant's head would explode if he was around and saw how easy it is to access live Led Zep on the internet.
Trudat
grant was to rock n roll that buffet is to wall street....the team of lz and grant should be a havard business case as to how IT should be done
It would be very difficult for him no doubt
he would just beat up the entire internet.
@@karlbishop9670 LOL, that was gold.
The music that Led Zeppelin recorded and released between 69 and 79 can never be duplicated. Their music will forever be timeless.
Simply put, if you were a rock band, you couldn't have wished for a better manager, knowing he's always there, watching your backs and on the case to get you the best deal and stop anyone ripping you off.
Yes! And this dude would knock you out if you fucked with his band. He was tough and fair...took his cut and always kept it honest. TRUST.
Or else....
And this was against some very rough people. He put them in their place.
That's something I would like to see.
Peter Grant was a true pioneer in the rock business. Totally changed the game. Completely enabled Jimmy Page’s vision and they formed a partnership that modernized rock music.
Compare and contrast with Don Arden who managed ELO. Jeff Lynne said to Sharon (Ozzy's wife): "Your dad stole millions from me."
@@ChilliCheezdog that’s for sure. But I think that Grant had to be in partnership with Page because Page was f’n smart and experienced and determined to do it his way. Grant bought in to Page’s vision and used his own muscle and savvy to pave the way for Page and Zep. I think many of Page’s detractors dislike Page’s commercial ambition and drive and like to attack him on that basis. If Page was born in the 1960s he’d probably be the CEO of a tech company or something and not a musician.
@@Dan-zq5wt Have you seen that Jimmy Page interview from 1957, when he was just a boy? "I want to do biological research." 😅
@@ChilliCheezdog that’s what I mean! He had a crazy level of focus and competitive fire, at least until the drugs got him. He just happened to be born into the golden era of rock and grew up at a time where a visionary musician could make it happen in a big way. I think Page is impossible to replicate because his background and personality together were so singular. Rock critic hippies of the era just couldn’t relate.
Grant robbed Zeppelin blind as well. Don’t pretend like he didn’t. 😂
Gentleman's agreement between himself and the band.
Rock solid.
Indeed. He never had a contract with them.
Peter Grant stopped the arean's, theater's, promoters, etc from making more money than the actual band themselves! He was shrew, and feared, the exact type manager you want looking out for the group's interest. Very little exposure, interviews, or tv, if you want to see the band, pay to see them at a show. One of the best manager's ever.
Peter Grant was by far hands down the best manager there ever was
Jeff Bogue Brian Epstein Beatles, Irving azoff eagles ,Robert stigwood the bee geees , Richard dash but Fleetwood Mac, all great as good as Peter grant
Paul McGuinness U2, did far far more for a bands wealth than any of these small time player's, Stigwood said his biggest regret was not taking U2 on, when bono sent a demo tape in
Rod Smallwood
And he physically broke bones to make it so.
Absolutely agree. By far the best.
Grant was the reason the Zeps retired as Millionaires. Consider the criminals of Mike Jeffreys, Don Arden , Larry Parnes and Stigwood who existed to rip off their acts as business rule #1. Grant was a Hero .

Colonel Parker
This man was the British answer to Colonel Tom Parker that Elvis had. Ruthless, intelligent and determined. This man was really great.
Valentino Not Really because Colonel Parker took 50 percent of Elvis’s earnings. That was the contract Elvis signed. A Complete Rip-off!
Grant took 20 percent which is the standard. Grant was a much better and fairer Manager and he demanded the now standard charge that Bands get from bigger Live Shows.
Grant was the one who the insisted that the Band get the bigger cut of the Gate. Venues were desperate for a sellout crowd so they gave in. It always helps to have a strong intimidating Manager like Grant who took No Guff from Anyone! They may not have liked him but they Respected him because he stood his ground and had the hottest Rock Band in the World! That always helps because he was bargaining from a Position of Strength! Great Manager!
Parker was a Scumbag! Everyone hated him! And he stopped Elvis from Touring Britain and Europe because he couldn’t get a Passport.
Elvis was incredibly popular in Britain and I think he would have been huge there and in Europe. He would have had sellouts over there. Just like Prince did. They appreciate quality!
So Parker the Phony Colonel was really a detriment to Elvis’s Career! But Elvis trusted him and and kept him which was a big mistake! He could have fired him. He didn’t need him. But he let that Leech continue to drain half his earnings. That’s nonsense!
Arvid Smith
R.I.P. Peter, every band should have had you as their manager and friend.
Knowing he had a goldmine act, he changed the shares, telling promoters "you can have 10% of something or 100% of nothing ".
Say what you want about Peter Grant, but that last part when he's saying, "belief, belief", sent shivers over my body.
If there was ever a Manager a band could want watching their backs and their money,it's should be Peter Grant and no other.
Peter Grant was the Led Zeppelin of managers.
greatest manager ever....he wrote the book for all others after him ..rip Mr Grant
and I wish he HAD written a book, it would have been amazing.
@@lesleylesley5821 there books about him .. I have 2 of them
In addition to being the best manager ever, he was an awesome guy and extremely cool. Led Zeppelin was very fortunate to have found a guy like Mr. Grant.
If Elvis had him instead of Colonel Parker, he would have been much better off. Although his estate still makes a fortune in his death, Colonel Parker was taking about 50% and treated Elvis like a circus act. Peter Grant was a talented manager with street smarts, an imposing man and had obvious dedication to a very talented band. Yes Led Zeppelin made him a rich man but he earned it.
Or He made Led Zep rich,it was a lovely luxury 50/50
cardo Elvis wouldn’t have made those awful films & would’ve toured the world & most importantly not given that parasite Parker 50% of his earnings
Excellent point. Elvis was so naive and had such blind allegiance, that he kept Colonel Tom on. Such a narrow minded, shitty manager. To think Elvis never toured outside the US! Peter Grant was the best.
@@jbsmith940 I don't think Elvis would have EVER been as successful or had the longevity he had without Tom Parker. Led Zeppelin was a quartet and the profits were split 5 ways with Grant being the "fifth" member as far as salary. Elvis was a solo act with a paid band. If that's what he and Parker worked out, it obviously worked. Elvis died a wealthy man too. I think its funny how so many of you "armchair" business people have these strong opinions. It's total negativity and shows how ignorant you are. You fuck heads on here saying all this bullshit probably never have accomplished what these people have and never will.
Valentino we well never know but he certainly wouldn’t have made those crap movies plus he would of be able to tour the world if it hadn’t been for Parker’s illegal immigration status & in the end he was hugely detrimental to Elvis career & health
man, the end, I just couldn't hold back the tears, the way he kept saying "believe, believe". What a HEART this man had!!! He truly loved those four guys. And also knowing he's gone, soooo sad!!! Despite the all stories you hear about how tough he was, Peter really was a sweet and lovely man.
So many great memories of Peter; a tough, cantankerous but very decent human being.
Decent, yes says it all. God bless
To this day all acts reap the financial rewards of the seeds sown by Peter Grant....
I guess it wasn't enough that Led Zeppelin were the best band ever....they also landed the man who revolutionized the way the $$$ was divvied up in favor of the musicians after decades of artist exploitation. The strategically intimidating Peter Grant fiercely loved & protected his band. His brilliantly shrewd management of Zeppelin, carefully limiting their exposure (he could be extraordinarily selective with a bargaining chip like Zep), helped create a mystique and colossal demand still unequaled in Rock history.
agreed. its a retarded amount of work keeping a band going....especially that band. come on. god forbid he be paid. right manager at the right time. the ol lightning in a bottle bullshit right there.
3434arc1: You are spot-on ― right on the money.
Amen. G said "You make the music, and I'll take care of everything else". And he did. Period. He was 100% unfailingly loyal to his band. Without his tireless contribution and dedication to the band, Zep would not have become what they did. Any of them would tell you this.
If you're not including The Beatles and The Stones
Inspirational, brilliant bloke - he did what he had to do
He was a great guy to have on your side apparently. Excellent post!!!
The great man himself , nice video , thanks for sharing .
Great Manager...for the greatest band ever.
Well, I was at the Seattle show in 1977 and you have to figure between the tickets sales, t-shirts, posters, etc, programs, and maybe even a cut of the concessions....for an evenings worth of work they flew out of town with a million at least. Yeah he was the greatest. Hands down.
A million? probably a bit more.
@@painkillerjones6232 A million in 1977 is worth 4.25 million today. The average Zeppelin concert ticket was around 10 bucks in 77.
Like I said....
@@painkillerjones6232 I agree with you.
A million? No one was getting a million per performance in the '70s. As far as I remember David Bowie got a $ million for an appearance at the US Festival in Glen Helen Regional Park, San Bernardino, California, in May 1983. Then again inflation has to be taken into account.
Like Grant says, you can get everything right, but its the artists who have to out there on the stage and perform. And if the audience isn't blown away. Its all for nothing.
Peter didnt take shit from ANYONE. He was a former pro-wrestler. He got what he wanted when he wanted it. Best manager ever. He was afraid of nobody and for the first time ever, got what the band had earned and deserved.
If you find somebody big and not afraid to kick anybody’s ass because he believes you’re the best thing in the world and he is willing to give 150% of his will- then you have found Peter Grant.
Say what you want about Peter Grant, but the man took care of his artists. And this was at a time when the vast majority of managers were taking advantage of their artists and only looking out for themselves.
A true legend tough but fair
- What an awesome man!
seemed like a nicer guy than the rumors say
guitar lover he seems to have mellowed. in Zep's concert movie he can be seen berating Madison square garden staff and calling one guy in particular a silly c*nt.
Sounds about right gotta be a bit of a prick when your managing the biggest group in the world
No quarter asked none given.
Not true! He was meaner than HELL! That is, if you tried to steal from him! Yeah! Who likes to be ripped off!
Peter Grant was awesome!
He was pretty ill at this point. He had diabetes and a big cocaine addiction
The one and only , Peter Grant !
Legendary.
Mighty in stature, tenacious, astute, a brilliant manager!
Peter Grant is rocks most brilliant manager.
simply the best band ever.
Probably the best manager of any band,ever.R.I.P. Peter.
Good to see Peter had mellowed out, when not managing Led Zeppelin! He is the defenition of what a manager, should be! He fought for what was best for the band! Cause the band creates the sound that is sold. BRILLIANT!
Mark Zep: thanks for posting. Cheers!
The two biggest bands Zep and The Beatles both had managers that had a high respect and love for the group they managed and look at the results..
How a manager should be, take care of the business and let the artists create. No wonder all the promoters hated Peter, he was ruthless in protecting his clients from getting screwed which promoters were notorious for.
He seemed happy and relaxed. RIP peter
A great band manager and an honest one too.
One of the best Managers; he would be turning over in his grave if he saw what happened to the music business with the internet.
Yea and all the shite that's turned out now, that's what it is..pure shite.
“Believe in them, and they will in themselves”
Prior to Peter, Bands got 70% of the door takings after Peter Grant the Bands got 90%, well done Peter RIP!
The Best Manager a Big reason for Zeppelin's Success
He was a good man, got carried away like all the musicians did back then, but he was a really good man. Such a shame he died so young.
What a man!!!
Peter was certainly the TOUGHEST son of a gun you never wanted to get on his bad side of if you crossed him. Yet he was also known to be an absolute SWEETHEART, socially. In spite of his personal ups and downs, Peter will forever be one of my heroes.
Wise words; believe in the vision of the artist...
Nigel Thomas you really are passed I Cuzco you didn't get tickets to m.s.g.we all know the mafia ripped zepoff
rob sez he already was raping led for 20percent. you new York Jews will believe anything. have a nice day!
Robert: It was a five-way split.
@@PlatinumBlack90038 at the very beginning plant and Bonham were paid a weekly wage !
@@robertrodriguez5595 You clearly don't know that 20% is pretty much standard for a manager
Greatest manager of all time !!!!!!!!!
Nice house! Sweet, he sure deserves it!
Horse lunges Manor in Hailsham. He let it fall apart, then he moved into an apartment in Eastbourne.
Peter Grant is a legend. He LOVED his artists and he was ALL for the artists. I was lucky to meet him in 1995 at Wembley Arena as it was then, 10 minutes from my house. Peter was graceful but sick at the time. He liked me. He told me if he didn't like me, he would tell me to fuck off. I totall got that. That is how he was and he drove all his bands. Took no shit!
Peter Grant was a classic Aries personalty - loyal, astute but fiercely impulsive and temperamental. He could be your best friend or worst enemy and that's just how Ariens are.
I think a lot of people roll that way I sure do I'm a sagittarius in fact I've said outloud many times exactly that!
🎼Peter Grant did what he was supposed to! He was the proverbial hammer of his artist(s)..
have belief in your artist, easy to say when you have the greatest act of all time
BRILLIANT BLOKE
THE MAN
Grant was a good manager and Jimmy in business was
So many groups get ripped off and end up bad from corrupt
Greedy managers!! They were lucky to have him
Peter didn’t mess around. And that’s why you have the opening scene in The Song Remains the Same, of Peter and his boys taking care of the corrupt powers that be, which might stand in his and the bands way.
I respect the hell out if Led Zeppelin for stopping when Bonham died. They were a goldmine, but they chose to not go on without their brother.
I wish I could see a longer interview
It's easy to "believe" in the best R&R band in history.
hail to the greatest honest manager in rock
The fifth spoke in the wheel that was Led Zep. Keep it rollin'
A wheel with only 5 spokes? Sounds kind of unstable
Peter Grant met Bob Dylan at an LA party in 1975. He introduced himself: 'I'm Peter Grant, & I manage Led Zeppelin'
Dylan answered 'Hey man, I don't come to you with my problems'.
That's because Dylan was a wanker
I imagine they had a good laugh.
Well... Dylan is using a litotic style of ironic understatement in order to deflate pomposity and/or point out aspects that 'might' have been overlooked by the less nuanced. Litotes is a figure of speech and a form of understatement in which a sentiment is expressed ironically by negating its contrary. For example, saying "It's not the best weather today" during a hurricane would be an example of litotes, implying through ironic understatement that the weather is, in fact, very bad. Sorry if it was confusing.
Can you top tha rudness ---
@@flobeeonekinobee2353 What's wrong ? Thought you Brits loved wit ?
Peter Grant's three favourite tools for getting Led Zeppelin excellent record and concert deals: a handshake, a pen and a baseball bat.
If Peter Grant wasn't intimidating enough by his stature, then you were dealing with a vocal powerhouse bulldog who'd corner his enemy into curling up in the fetal position for mercy.
If ever there was one guy in the music business you wanted on your side it would have been Peter Grant.
If Led Zeppelin was named by others as Rock Gods, Peter Grant is one you may call a Manager God of Rock n' Roll.
I honestly think Grant was more concerned with gaining respect instead of wealth. He got both , although he made plenty of enemies. In the end I think he did more good than bad.
That riff at 1:23 always blew my mind! Page's hand looks like a big, jumping spider. What a showman!
Pete may not be the most popular bloke in the world, but he got the job done with Zeppelin,,,,Jimmy was SO WISE to hire on Peter Grant,,,
Peter frequently got a bad rap, but the reality is that you had to be tough as nails in that business, and he wasn't willing to take any crap. He could be a very generous guy too, and that's something the media are less willing to talk about. He certainly was very supportive to Les Harvey's family after Swansea.
Never heard him speak - seems decent guy
Peter Grant was the last vital piece of the making of The Mighty Led Zeppelin!
Grant is seen here in front of the house from the TSRTS movie, yes? A unique Man with a unique band that ended tragically.WHEW....
i think he owned that building
a moated Manor house where my dad was born in 1922 in the gabled room second from left, upper floor. The big depression of the 30's saw my grandfather having to sell it, but retain the farm land which he continued to farm and latterly my uncle ( who got on well with Peter & farmed his land until his untimely passing) & cousin.
WILDBILL212: This was shot at Peter Grant’s estate at Eastbourne, East Sussex, UK in 1988.
No it's Horselunges Manor
@@MrGdong
Yes, he did.
Would loved to had met and sat down with this guy...
God damn even their manager is the coolest
Quite simply the coolest guy on the planet. Passion first, money second.
Seems to me at that point Peter was a shell of his former self. No disrespect to him. I think the lifestyle was eating away at him. The Band may not have been who they were without him. The boys are still to this day very rich cause of him.R.I.P. G
Parker with Elvis took 40% ,even more Grant 20%, parker stole from Elvis and was sued after his death, Grant left the biz after zep because he was crushed, would not even manage bad co any more,
Band first
Peter the Great
Peter Grant (1935-1995) 60
6'5 300 pounds plus 😮
The man was a GIANT literally and as a force of nature
Peter was TRUE manager, nobody f--ed with Led not even Bill Graham.
He was the best manager along with Brian Epstein. He cared about his artists and would do whatever necessary to get them the best.
His voice is about three octaves higher than I would have expected.
First concert, LZ Kezar, Houses. I was 15.
A few years later LZ again, Oakland DOG. Glad I didn't go.
LZ goes on way late. Maybe because Grants hench men were beating up a BGP employee.
Bill Graham "They'll never play here again".
Peter Grant looks like an alien from the original Outer Limits tv show.
Grand Funk should've given Peter an offer when he was throwing them off the stage. If anything, taken notice of what a real manager should be doing.
There are many artists that would have gained tremendously with PG as their manager . . His only dilemma would’ve been how to share his time
Queen tried to hire PG but he felt he had his hands full with Zeppelin and Bad Company and wouldn't have been able to give them the attention they deserved. He loved the band though
Say what you will,,,,,,, Pete Grant was GREAT,,,,he was Tha Guvnah,,,,,read his story,,,,,,Rest In Peace Pete,,,,
Remember the beggining of the song Remains the same, Peter Grant Ordering a hit on the criminals playing their world domination tactics. Got blown away. Hope it happens one day.
Great !
20% and he was worth every penny.
Onya Peter👍🍺
They had some heavies (insert psychopaths) pulled from London underground on their crew, people that you really do not want to fuck with. Probably why they get a heavy rep mostly. Then again there is the inherent DANGER of Led Zeppelin itself in it's nature, you can't see it or quantify it, reason it in your mind but you know it is present. Beautiful.
Grant was the 5 th member of Led Zeppelin, without him led zeppelin wouldn’t of been what they were
