One thing I personally like in the movie was the scene of Gerald talking to Shadow. In the game, Shadow’s sole motivation was Maria’s wish (or what he believed to be her wish). If she wanted him to be a McDonald’s employee, he would’ve done it. He literally had a 180 change in his attitude just based on what Maria wanted. Not because it was the right thing to do, not because he had a change of heart, but because it’s what Maria wanted. Here they took that away. Not only Shadow doesn’t know what her wish would’ve been, but Gerald makes it clear it’s irrelevant whether or not she would’ve wanted this and what really matters is that the world deserves to be punished because of what happened. This makes Shadow’s eventual change a choice of his own and based on a change of heart he actually went through. The movie actually allows Shadow to grow on his own and develop his own morality. This makes movie Shadow a much more compelling character than SA2 Shadow.
Gerald being a bad guy in the movie shows that the univers is different from the original story. Spoilers : In the late sonic game, we can read a diary owned by Gerald Robotnik during his stay at the ark. We learned here that all of his efforts was to cure Maria and we also discover that he was against violence and weapons (he sure does some weapons, but it's because we was pressured by G.U.N). That shows the difference between the two Gerald : One was a pacifist and loving grandfather. The other was an old genius who has a radical change of heart and wants to destroy the world.
Not only that it doesn't deify Maria as some saint who was the purest heart of all, it humanized her, she acts like a kid. But the bond is still there, she's still his beloved friend, teacher, sister, etc that meant the world to him. This makes us care more than how the games narrative did.

For all we know, it’s entirely possible both characters started out as pacifists and loving grandfathers who changed into wanting to destroy the world after Maria’s death. They can be different characters, but they are close enough IMO.
I loved the sheer amount of detail that they added from the Game Sonic Adventure 2, the first game that introduced Shadow. Also I loved that they didn’t make Shadow over the top edgy, they perfectly balanced him
The way that this scene depicts the sheer pain in Shadow was so beautifully done, and it was able to strike our hearts with the same emotions as Shadow. This movie is truly a masterpiece.
Literally reminds me of the Guardians Vol 3 Rocket Raccoon tragic backstory scenes. Absolute raw power and emotion in every single second from both movies. Hands down the best anthropomorphic anti-villain along with Muerte Lobo. We need more characters that seem as if they are “villains” but understanding where they’re coming from and what is their true mission makes them sympathetic and seem way more like they’re heroes.

Disney USED to make beautifully tragic animated flicks like The Lion King, Big Hero 6, The Fox and the Hound, and many others for example, but have completely forgotten what made those movies so compelling in the first place. They’ve stopped caring about innovative, compelling, and emotional storytelling. Instead of hiring writers that want to relate to the audience with emotional and powerful storytelling, they instead want to do the bare minimum along with…unnecessary agenda-driven storytelling I guess.
0:50 - 2:11 I know I might be criticized for comparing it with Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic X but I have to be honest : this moment is exactly what pushed Gerald to madness...and this is the first time we saw how Gerald reacted to his granddaughter's death... Seeing him being mad and full of rage ALIVE makes me think that Gerald surely would have made the same thing in this movie if those soldiers didn't execute him in his prison...execution that could be easily heard in Sonic X (only in JP since 4Kids censored a lot of things, which made the plot moot)
I actually really like how they showed Walters try and stop the soldiers. Before I watched the movie, I was thinking that they’d make it to where he was the one who killed Maria, but no he actually tried to prevent it. I’m glad they did that, because whenever I played the games I was always dumbfounded how not a SINGLE soldier questioned or had doubts about killing a child!
I like how Shadow powering the Eclipse Cannon is similar to Sonic running around the baseball field in the first movie. Both of them running to release their power for personal reasons.
yea shadow and sonic are both similar in many ways, hard to think that with shadow being such a more dark and brutal character with a more mysterious voice and that but shadow in reality is just like anti sonic basically
My god, the way Gerald handles it when Shadow starts questioning the plan is just peak villainy. He immediately gets him to stop thinking and makes his pain and rage overwhelm him again. It's gutwrenching watching someone be manipulated and used like this.

I really love watching manipulation like this. It just delivers such satisfaction. Gerald was no doubt my favourite character this movie and Jim played this evil traditional villain very well. Best version of Gerald.
It’s especially tragic since Shadow was like a surrogate son/grandson to him, yet Gerald was only using him as a tool for vengeance… even if it meant at the cost of his life. Gerald only truly cared about Maria while Ivo and Shadow (despite also being his family) were nothing more but mere pawns to him. 😔
Worse when you know that Shadow is just a kid. Several times he (and Maria) is referred to as a child and he's hurt, grieving and angry, and Gerald using him like this.. UGH 😭😭
Since Walters is inspired by the GUN Commander from the games (Abraham Tower), I like how in this version of Shadow's story he actually tried to stop the GUN Soldiers from firing at Maria. Despite him being a completely different character from the games this defiantly feels very aligned with his game counterpart and feels like something he wished he would had done to save Maria.

I like the movie take a bit more since it showcases Walters going out of his way to protect Maria, Gerald, and Shadow. Shows that he has empathy for them, but still viewed Shadow as dangerous and decided to lock him back up for 50 years after seeing what he did to his soldiers.
2:08 Can we take a second to acknowledge Carry's acting here? He's most known for being a comedic actor, and of course he has plenty of that in this series, but this moment left me speechless. There's no dialogue, but it's not needed. He captures the grief of a man who just lost his granddaughter perfectly. Just the sheer weight of that broken expression. It doesn't justify his plans to destroy the world, but that single moment is enough to make you understand his motives. Amazing work by Jim Carry! Very talented actor!
That shot is unironically the most comedic moment to me because it’s completely and utterly serious, you can just see this man absolutely wrecked with grief in his face… and this is really the only moment in the film where Gerald isn’t being comedic, which you can imagine how jarring it was that he was back to being comedic after this scene.

Having Maria die by explosion is more tragic than just her being shot imo. Shadow and Gerald both survived where they could have also been killed, which would give Shadow survior's guilt.
She didn’t even give her heartfelt speech to Shadow like the games, Maria was there one moment then gone the next making it more devastating :( I do like how they made it so she died to an explosion cuz personally that took me very off guard, especially since i expected her to be shot
I agree... Thought one thing that takes me away from the moment is that Gerald was right next to Maria, yet he's completly unarmed. He should have been etheir further away from her or be injured severaly. Could you imagine Gerald with some burn scars or even him becoming a cyborg due to loosing part of his left side? Killing Maria off with an explosion instead of shooting her is actually more haunting. She couldn’t use her dying breath to make her final wish to Shadow, she was just there one second and gone the next…
Underrated moment is Jim Carrey's Gerald screaming, "They want to take Shadow away from us, Maria!" It sounds very dramatic and close to what I'd hear from the games. Jim is usually so wacky and fun that this serious delivery caught me off guard.

One thing that stuck with me is that while Shadow is grieving we still see the GUN Agents approaching with their guns raised. No horror, guilt, or shame about what their actions just caused. Orders are orders. While they surround Shadow to take him into custody, Shadow is desperately processing the reality that his entire world and only friend IN that world is dead in front of him and that there's NOTHING he can do. But they don't care. And honestly that complete lack of care just makes this feel even more tragic. Explains why Gerald felt the world deserved to burn for what happened to Maria. He and Shadow were the only ones to notice or care that she died at all.
Man this scene is really emotional I think what makes it even more sad compared to the games is that Shadow never even got to hear Maria's wish which would be his motivation to save humanity in Sonic Adventure 2 but here she died before she could even tell him 😢
Something that made this scene even greater is how it expands on Gerald's character and allows his story to reflect on Shadow's arc in the film. Seeing how devastated Gerald was when Maria died shows how he was just as broken as Shadow was and how much he loved his granddaughter. His line in how he said "They want to take Shadow away from us Maria" also showed how caring he used to be and that like Maria, he didn't see Shadow as just some lab experiment, but as family. Both Gerald's and Shadow's arcs within the movie in how they dealt with their grief is a great lesson on how to deal with tragedy and loss, but it also makes Gerald's decent into villainy all the sadder. Seeing a kind and loving old man turn completely heartless (although who could blame him after he spent years working for G.U.N, and in return for his hard work, they murdered his granddaughter right in front of him and then imprisoned him for decades while still forcing him to work for them in designing the Eclipse Canon) and no longer caring about anyone including his own grandson and Shadow, really paints Gerald as a very broken man and tragic villain. Gerald's line to Shadow when he realized the error of his ways and tried to help Sonic save the Earth "And you were once so useful to me" really drives it home how much Gerald lost his humanity.
The way shadow's spines look in this shot 2:16 looks like sonic's wich is dark considering he reflects on this exact moment when he sees sonic grieving over tom's unconscious body.
1:45 if you listen closely you hear a terrifying scream in the background, that is a haunting scream icl and very dark as well. But this movie is amazing, somewhat wish it was a bit more dark at times like for example Tom should’ve died and not be knocked out instead so sonic was fighting shadow for a reason. Maria’s death is also very dark and shadow would’ve been able to make this movie dark in a good way
Bruh, Tom dying is too dark hahaha. He is a bit of the Chris Thorndyke of the movies. I actually think they cut out the humans a bit too much as they should serve as a avatar for non-sonic fans or casual sonic lovers. They couldv made it darker by incorporating more elements from the original Adventure 2 stories. A lot of changes. It couldv been darker if Gerald was already dead as in the games, show the flashback of him being chained and the of screen gunshot killing him, Maria died by the shot from the soldier when pulling on the handel freeing Shadow, and have the Biolizard/Final Hazard actually appear. The movie couldv easily been 2,5 hours long or a 'two parter' but again Hollywood thinking they should think for the audience (even with Wokeness fading this is still a overal Hollywood problem). Sonic movies gets away with it a bit but it still wouldv been best if Sonic adventure 1 story came before Shadow and used that as a basis to introduce Amy, Metal Sonic, and Chaos (with more lore for the chaos emerald, they are now treated as background items) and than Sonic 4 shouldv been about Shadow and conclude Jim Carreys Eggman/Dr Robotnik.
Tom dying would give a reason for sonic to have been bloodthirsty against shadow, and when sonic is mad, you don’t wanna mess with him. I’d say Tom’s death would also be a good lesson for sonic as well to learn that he doesn’t need to always seek revenge after a loss. By teaming up with shadow he saved earth from extinction basically, much better than letting the world die just to get revenge on shadow and kill him (which sonic could’ve done since he did win and had shadow at his hands)

Like, down to the tiniest details, like Shadow's pupils shrinking when he opened his eyes and realized what happened, the orchestral remix of Live and Learn in the back emphasizing the "save your sorrow" part SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS SCENE, the threatening way the soldiers close in even after they just killed someone... EVERY. DETAIL. IT'S PERFECT
Shadow and Gerald’s actions later on 50 years are completely Justified. GUN turned them into villains. Maria was an innocent child. Gerald went insane to manipulate Shadow to destroy the world

Well, I’m sure during the time frames of Maria and shadow being together, Walter’s obviously seen them, and the way he is with Maria .. shadow sees it .. but also after this moment, I’m sure shadow killed those guys but allowed Walter’s to live because of how he was to him & Maria .. even Walter’s said shadow was to Dangerous to Let go and Too Valuable to Destroy .. so I’m sure Walter’s had a little manipulation to shadow to get him to calm down .. and it’s when shadow realize that they were subduing him in ice, is when he realize Walter’s betrayed him & he was part of it

I think the things that made me uneasy (in a good way) were all the scenes where Gerard abuses Shadow especially when they meet in the ruins, were Shadow cries for help, asking to stop his intense pain, and Gerard instead feeds it.
I noticed that very clearly! He never treated him the same like he and Maria did 50 years ago and totally went from compassion towards Shadow to manipulating him, toying with his grieving heart and mind with Maria's death, and uses his powers to destroy the Earth and Gerald only doing it for HIMSELF He even stated that Shadow is no longer used to him (after Shadow decided to fight alongside with Sonic to save and protect Earth only for Maria) and straight up attempt to destroy Shadow like he was NOTHING to him anymore! As much as I feel bad for Gerald in the video game, I hate Gerald in this movie for treating Shadow like this 😡

Shadow is the definition of broken. He showed he never wanted to hurt anyone besides those who killed maria. He just wanted to be free from prison until he met Gerald again. And its why he didn't want to fight sonic at first, cause he didn't know about what happened. And I honestly don't think he thought Walters killed Maria, he just wanted him to do more.
I felt he didn't want to fight Team Sonic at first because he had no desire...they were aliens like him. And he just wanted to get revenge on Maria. It's because Knuckles caused the first punch and wanted to fight....lead to him fighting them. He didn't seem to want to deal with Sonic when he was chasing him on motorcycle...seeing him more as a nuisance since he was intervene with his revenge.
Maria's death in this movie looks more sad and depressing than in the games. The loss of Maria caused both Professor robotnik and Shadow to go dark paths, but this seemed to have a bigger impact on Gerald than shadow. Gerald was a brilliant mind, and all he wanted to do was to help mankind, but the loss of his granddaughter and being put in prison for 50 years caused him to lose his sanity and completely changed his outlook on humanity. Once he got out of prison, all he cared about was vengeance and destroying of mankind. He was literally a negative reflection of his former self.
Even Shadow question if this is what Maria would have wanted.....but he emotional manipulated everybody, not caring because he lost his mind and to continue his plan.
In case anyone didn't know, the reason G.U.N was there was because the government deemed Shadow too dangerous, so in order to cover it up, they raided the military base to destroy everything and kill everyone, in the original game, they had a G.U.N soldier shoot Maria in cold blood and later have Gerald in prison executed via firing squad.
@@silviozhang3116To be fair, she was directly shot (more than likely in the chest) by one G.U.N soldier's cold bullet when she was releasing Shadow to Earth in the games. This guy forcibly *missed* and she was obliterated by Chaos Energy. I think the game's still worse because nobody bothered to stop him from killing a child. Not even a warning shot
I like how one soldier did his best to stop someone, but it was too late. At least, someone had a heart while the other soldier was *following orders* 😢
2:27 This shot actually gets me. As someone who’s gone through a fair bit of familial loss, they captured the way that feels in the facial expressions so perfectly. It makes me share Shadow’s rage every time.
G.U.N. is such an A- hole. Shadow had no one to talk to except Maria, the only thing that made him happy, is gone. Also, seeing Gerald actually looking sad, considering that Jim Carrey is a comedic actor, is actually eye watering to me. Keanu and Jim deserve an Oscar.
This scene hits really hard. The way they executed the scene was perfect. And the unfortunate part is the capsules that were holding that energy was shadows raw power. And that's what ended up killing Maria.
Usually not a fan of video game movies (they're too caught up in fan service reliance half the time) though this scene already made this my favourite video game movie and for good reasons. Carrey's non verbal acting as he looks at Shadow before Maria's body is just powerful. The man really knows how to switch from 100 to 200 and if this is his last film then it truly ended on a bang. Plus, I was shocked at how dark this scene was for a PG movie. I know it's apart of the crucial story of adapting SA2, but I expected them to sort of half ass the whole thing; I was wrong, and it was a very powerful scene. Great movie.
I'm surprised by how good Gerald actually was in this movie. I mean, they could've just made him an over the top geriatric goofball, but no. He had his comedic moments with Ivo, but the parts that really stood out are his more serious and molicious moments.
I’m glad they didn’t go game accurate Maria death because that would of for sure made the movie pg13 glad she died from an explosion caused by a bullet and not killed directly from being shot
I wish we got to see more scenes with Gerald and Maria. I mean, in the games, the reason why she was with him was because Project Shadow revolved around Gerald trying to cure her terminal illness. That's why he went insane in the games, because he compromised so many of his beliefs to save his granddaughter, and then it turned out to be all for nothing. Whereas here, all we're told is he loved her and then she died. We don't even find out why she kept following him everywhere. Like, are her parents dead in this version? It's nice to see they got Maria and Shadow's relationship pretty much right, but it would've been nice to see how Gerald fit into it.

Shadow was basically living in Batman's shoes when he saw Maria died right in front of him in that explosion. He was filled with Sadness and Pain. Then later it turned into Vengeance and he walked down the path of hatred.
Well, his video game counterpart is described as Batman to Sonic’s Superman. If the Batman you were thinking of when you mentioned Batman was Robert Pattinson’s Batman, I would’ve thought the same thing.
I feel more bad for Gerald, he had a blood relative, and he created Shadow, who was basically his son, And for 50 years he had to live with the loss, pain, and hatred towards literally everyone, it is justified why he wanted to piss on the Earth. Definitely feel more bad that Shadow and Ivo betrayed him, but then again, pissing on billions of lives won't bring Maria back.
And he's finally meeting his living grandson, Ivo who later betrayed him because Ivo realized how messed up his grandpa is. And he died like a housefly. Yikes.
I mean, It kinda makes sense to not kill off Maria like in Sonic Adventure 2. Just casually SHOOTING A CHILD (Through the heart no less) isn't what you'd call 'Kid Friendly' I guess. But still tho, this version of Maria's death is also just as heartbreaking as the original.

The way that this scene depicts the sheer pain in Shadow was so beautifully done, and it was able to strike our hearts with the same emotions as Shadow. This movie is truly a masterpiece.

Hands down the best anthropomorphic anti-villain along with Muerte Lobo. We need more characters that seem as if they are “villains” but understanding where they’re coming from and what is their true mission makes them sympathetic and seem way more like they’re heroes.

Instead of hiring writers that want to relate to the audience with emotional and powerful storytelling, they instead want to do the bare minimum along with…unnecessary agenda-driven storytelling I guess.

0:50 - 2:11 I know I might be criticized for comparing it with Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic X but I have to be honest : this moment is exactly what pushed Gerald to madness...and this is the first time we saw how Gerald reacted to his granddaughter's death... Seeing him being mad and full of rage ALIVE makes me think that Gerald surely would have made the same thing in this movie if those soldiers didn't execute him in his prison...execution that could be easily heard in Sonic X (only in JP since 4Kids censored a lot of things, which made the plot moot)
I actually really like how they showed Walters try and stop the soldiers. Before I watched the movie, I was thinking that they’d make it to where he was the one who killed Maria, but no he actually tried to prevent it. I’m glad they did that, because whenever I played the games I was always dumbfounded how not a SINGLE soldier questioned or had doubts about killing a child!

My god, the way Gerald handles it when Shadow starts questioning the plan is just peak villainy. He immediately gets him to stop thinking and makes his pain and rage overwhelm him again. It's gutwrenching watching someone be manipulated and used like this.

Since Walters is inspired by the GUN Commander from the games (Abraham Tower), I like how in this version of Shadow's story he actually tried to stop the GUN Soldiers from firing at Maria. Despite him being a completely different character from the games this defiantly feels very aligned with his game counterpart and feels like something he wished he would had done to save Maria.
Not just Maria, remember what he said "Those are children" he also refers Shadow as a child. Walter tried to stop them from harming them.
Towers was a child at the time of Maria's death, idk where he was when Maria died, possibly off the ARK entirely.

I like the movie take a bit more since it showcases Walters going out of his way to protect Maria, Gerald, and Shadow. Shows that he has empathy for them, but still viewed Shadow as dangerous and decided to lock him back up for 50 years after seeing what he did to his soldiers.
2:08 Can we take a second to acknowledge Carry's acting here? He's most known for being a comedic actor, and of course he has plenty of that in this series, but this moment left me speechless. There's no dialogue, but it's not needed. He captures the grief of a man who just lost his granddaughter perfectly. Just the sheer weight of that broken expression. It doesn't justify his plans to destroy the world, but that single moment is enough to make you understand his motives. Amazing work by Jim Carry! Very talented actor!
That shot is unironically the most comedic moment to me because it’s completely and utterly serious, you can just see this man absolutely wrecked with grief in his face… and this is really the only moment in the film where Gerald isn’t being comedic, which you can imagine how jarring it was that he was back to being comedic after this scene.

It sounds very dramatic and close to what I'd hear from the games. Jim is usually so wacky and fun that this serious delivery caught me off guard.
If you have watched "Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind" or "the Truman show" you'll know that he has a very good dramatic, acting capabilities

Jim Carrey and the rest of his costars portrayed their roles really well!
One thing that stuck with me is that while Shadow is grieving we still see the GUN Agents approaching with their guns raised. No horror, guilt, or shame about what their actions just caused. Orders are orders. While they surround Shadow to take him into custody, Shadow is desperately processing the reality that his entire world and only friend IN that world is dead in front of him and that there's NOTHING he can do. But they don't care. And honestly that complete lack of care just makes this feel even more tragic. Explains why Gerald felt the world deserved to burn for what happened to Maria. He and Shadow were the only ones to notice or care that she died at all.

I love that the Sonic movies have so much material to work with from the video games to make a lot of sequels
Something that made this scene even greater is how it expands on Gerald's character and allows his story to reflect on Shadow's arc in the film. Seeing how devastated Gerald was when Maria died shows how he was just as broken as Shadow was and how much he loved his granddaughter. His line in how he said "They want to take Shadow away from us Maria" also showed how caring he used to be and that like Maria, he didn't see Shadow as just some lab experiment, but as family. Both Gerald's and Shadow's arcs within the movie in how they dealt with their grief is a great lesson on how to deal with tragedy and loss, but it also makes Gerald's decent into villainy all the sadder. Seeing a kind and loving old man turn completely heartless (although who could blame him after he spent years working for G.U.N, and in return for his hard work, they murdered his granddaughter right in front of him and then imprisoned him for decades while still forcing him to work for them in designing the Eclipse Canon) and no longer caring about anyone including his own grandson and Shadow, really paints Gerald as a very broken man and tragic villain. Gerald's line to Shadow when he realized the error of his ways and tried to help Sonic save the Earth "And you were once so useful to me" really drives it home how much Gerald lost his humanity.
The way shadow's spines look in this shot 2:16 looks like sonic's wich is dark considering he reflects on this exact moment when he sees sonic grieving over tom's unconscious body.

Bruh, Tom dying is too dark hahaha. He is a bit of the Chris Thorndyke of the movies. I actually think they cut out the humans a bit too much as they should serve as a avatar for non-sonic fans or casual sonic lovers.
They couldv made it darker by incorporating more elements from the original Adventure 2 stories. A lot of changes. It couldv been darker if Gerald was already dead as in the games, show the flashback of him being chained and the of screen gunshot killing him, Maria died by the shot from the soldier when pulling on the handel freeing Shadow, and have the Biolizard/Final Hazard actually appear. The movie couldv easily been 2,5 hours long or a 'two parter' but again Hollywood thinking they should think for the audience (even with Wokeness fading this is still a overal Hollywood problem).
Sonic movies gets away with it a bit but it still wouldv been best if Sonic adventure 1 story came before Shadow and used that as a basis to introduce Amy, Metal Sonic, and Chaos (with more lore for the chaos emerald, they are now treated as background items) and than Sonic 4 shouldv been about Shadow and conclude Jim Carreys Eggman/Dr Robotnik.
Tom dying would give a reason for sonic to have been bloodthirsty against shadow, and when sonic is mad, you don’t wanna mess with him. I’d say Tom’s death would also be a good lesson for sonic as well to learn that he doesn’t need to always seek revenge after a loss. By teaming up with shadow he saved earth from extinction basically, much better than letting the world die just to get revenge on shadow and kill him (which sonic could’ve done since he did win and had shadow at his hands)

Well, I’m sure during the time frames of Maria and shadow being together, Walter’s obviously seen them, and the way he is with Maria .. shadow sees it .. but also after this moment, I’m sure shadow killed those guys but allowed Walter’s to live because of how he was to him & Maria .. even Walter’s said shadow was to Dangerous to Let go and Too Valuable to Destroy .. so I’m sure Walter’s had a little manipulation to shadow to get him to calm down .. and it’s when shadow realize that they were subduing him in ice, is when he realize Walter’s betrayed him & he was part of it

I think the things that made me uneasy (in a good way) were all the scenes where Gerard abuses Shadow especially when they meet in the ruins, were Shadow cries for help, asking to stop his intense pain, and Gerard instead feeds it.

He never treated him the same like he and Maria did 50 years ago and totally went from compassion towards Shadow to manipulating him, toying with his grieving heart and mind with Maria's death, and uses his powers to destroy the Earth and Gerald only doing it for HIMSELF
He even stated that Shadow is no longer used to him (after Shadow decided to fight alongside with Sonic to save and protect Earth only for Maria) and straight up attempt to destroy Shadow like he was NOTHING to him anymore!
As much as I feel bad for Gerald in the video game, I hate Gerald in this movie for treating Shadow like this 😡

Maria's death here was done better than in the games. The explosion came from a canister of his chaos energy. He indirectly caused her to die.
Shadow is the definition of broken. He showed he never wanted to hurt anyone besides those who killed maria. He just wanted to be free from prison until he met Gerald again. And its why he didn't want to fight sonic at first, cause he didn't know about what happened. And I honestly don't think he thought Walters killed Maria, he just wanted him to do more.
Also, Shadow was just walking around Tokyo when GUN appeared, inciting anger in him, and making him destroy Shibuya

It's because Knuckles caused the first punch and wanted to fight....lead to him fighting them. He didn't seem to want to deal with Sonic when he was chasing him on motorcycle...seeing him more as a nuisance since he was intervene with his revenge.

Maria's death in this movie looks more sad and depressing than in the games. The loss of Maria caused both Professor robotnik and Shadow to go dark paths, but this seemed to have a bigger impact on Gerald than shadow. Gerald was a brilliant mind, and all he wanted to do was to help mankind, but the loss of his granddaughter and being put in prison for 50 years caused him to lose his sanity and completely changed his outlook on humanity. Once he got out of prison, all he cared about was vengeance and destroying of mankind. He was literally a negative reflection of his former self.
Even Shadow question if this is what Maria would have wanted.....but he emotional manipulated everybody, not caring because he lost his mind and to continue his plan.

In case anyone didn't know, the reason G.U.N was there was because the government deemed Shadow too dangerous, so in order to cover it up, they raided the military base to destroy everything and kill everyone, in the original game, they had a G.U.N soldier shoot Maria in cold blood and later have Gerald in prison executed via firing squad.
So in other words, they saw Shadow as a dangerous weapon instead of a kid.
In this scenario Maria burned into a blazing explosion.

This scene hits really hard. The way they executed the scene was perfect. And the unfortunate part is the capsules that were holding that energy was shadows raw power. And that's what ended up killing Maria.
Usually not a fan of video game movies (they're too caught up in fan service reliance half the time) though this scene already made this my favourite video game movie and for good reasons.
Carrey's non verbal acting as he looks at Shadow before Maria's body is just powerful. The man really knows how to switch from 100 to 200 and if this is his last film then it truly ended on a bang. Plus, I was shocked at how dark this scene was for a PG movie. I know it's apart of the crucial story of adapting SA2, but I expected them to sort of half ass the whole thing; I was wrong, and it was a very powerful scene.

I wish we got to see more scenes with Gerald and Maria. I mean, in the games, the reason why she was with him was because Project Shadow revolved around Gerald trying to cure her terminal illness. That's why he went insane in the games, because he compromised so many of his beliefs to save his granddaughter, and then it turned out to be all for nothing.
Whereas here, all we're told is he loved her and then she died. We don't even find out why she kept following him everywhere. Like, are her parents dead in this version? It's nice to see they got Maria and Shadow's relationship pretty much right, but it would've been nice to see how Gerald fit into it.

It’s really interesting because in the game shadow was brainwashed but in the movie it seems shadow is being forced or pushed to give revenge because shadow’s questioning if this is what Maria really wanted

Shadow was basically living in Batman's shoes when he saw Maria died right in front of him in that explosion. He was filled with Sadness and Pain. Then later it turned into Vengeance and he walked down the path of hatred.
Well, his video game counterpart is described as Batman to Sonic’s Superman. If the Batman you were thinking of when you mentioned Batman was Robert Pattinson’s Batman, I would’ve thought the same thing.
I feel more bad for Gerald, he had a blood relative, and he created Shadow, who was basically his son, And for 50 years he had to live with the loss, pain, and hatred towards literally everyone, it is justified why he wanted to piss on the Earth. Definitely feel more bad that Shadow and Ivo betrayed him, but then again, pissing on billions of lives won't bring Maria back.

If you meant the movie, Gerald didn’t created Shadow. But he does view Shadow as his own child… that is, until Maria died.
And he's finally meeting his living grandson, Ivo who later betrayed him because Ivo realized how messed up his grandpa is. And he died like a housefly. Yikes.

I mean, It kinda makes sense to not kill off Maria like in Sonic Adventure 2.
Just casually SHOOTING A CHILD (Through the heart no less) isn't what you'd call 'Kid Friendly' I guess.
But still tho, this version of Maria's death is also just as heartbreaking as the original.
He had every right to be a villain this scene is so emotional for sonic fan's including me.
