Should You Play Shadow Of The Tomb Raider In 2023?

- Hi I'm Calzee! Today we take a look at Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the third and final game in the rebooted series, releasing back in 2018! Does the game still hold up 5 years later? Let's find out!

Just finishing this game up on the Series X and this is the best looking game I've ever played. Shocking how this is 5 years old and looks this good and 4K60 , no FSR needed.
Deadspace Remake looks pretty good, but uses FSR and the scenery is quite monotone and not nearly as large and diverse a game as SOTR. Gotham Knights looks great, but is stuck at 30 fps, ugh.
I'm also shocked at how HUGE this game is and yet the file size is only 22 GB! How is this even possible. Most of the games I've played since I got the Series X last year are 40-80GB and have only about 1/2 the game time and the environments are way smaller. I wish all games were this well optimized.
The acting is also probably the all round best of any game I've ever played (Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice was amazing too but that was only essentially 1 person who stole the show).
Played Immortals Of Aveum, brand new UE5 game with all the bells and whistles, and it was the worst looking game I've played in years... low res mushy graphics that looked like it was 20 years ago, and the facial animations were "OK" but paled to those in Shadow).
it looks incredible for a almost 6 year old game, love the lighting and realism. As you said, it's hard to believe it only takes up a small amount of storage lol. glad you enjoy it too!

I did not like it as much as Rise when it first came out. But I played it again this month on max settings with a dual sense on Steam and think it's better than I remember but probably still 3rd place in the series. Id say an 8 out of 10. Rise is a 10 and the 1st game is a 9.

Only good thing about rise is its survival coop mode. I’ve tried going back to rise after playing shadow and can’t get into it. Shadow has better graphics, tombs, stealth, environment, and the combat you can chose it go in guns blazing or stealthy like an assassin. It’s only flaws for me is that it doesn’t have an open world survival coop mode, once you beat the game there’s no enemy respawning do it lacks combat. the lack of combat is everyone’s biggest complaint which I don’t understand because combat was never the big focus in the tomb raider games. They have always been about exploration and puzzle solving. Don’t get me wrong I wish shadow had respawning enemies wondering around the map because the combat is fun but as a real tomb raider game, it’s the best made in years
Loved the first two games & have this game a few years now but I just never played it & only thought of it today 😅

I just got another PS4 the slim along with remothered broken porcelain. For it!¡!!!!!! Honestly regardless if I'm not having the updates I can honestly say I have my PS4 slim next to my vita!!!!! Have revelations for vita and shadow for my PS4 I gave shadow another chance and really enjoying it!!!!!! PS4 to 5 then 6 same thing you will get the great graphical experience today!!!! Loving shadow and on my old tv they still pop and also bought the quarry!!!! So dang beautiful!!!!!! Vita and PS4 slim I'm glad to have and so happy to give shadow another chance!!!!!! Loving this game and the hair just like Alice madness returns!!!! Very nice!!!! I RECCOMMEND a PS4 and vita also did vita for nightcry!!! Both nightcry on vita and shadow on PS4 are pretty to look at!!!! Plus the vita does ports better then switch and I'm so happy cause I'm eventually gunna buy tomb raider 1-3 remastered for PS4!!!!!!! Shadow is a nice game!!!! Why I'm giving it a sec chance idk but I'm happy I did also rebought clock tower 3 another copy ordered and I'm happy nightcry on vita shadow on PS4 and clock tower 3 all pretty games still!!!!!!! Highly recommend shadow!!!!! Lara still goes through rough times story I feel I'm trying to follow but other then that great game!!!!!!! Very happy for ten bucks from an exchange I had to pick it up and def better then the resident evil 4 3 and 2 remakes!!!!!!!

Anyone still reading this? Game crashes randomly in game using DX21. My system: 6700xt and i5-10400f 32GB Ram. if I run it on DX 11, it does not crash but stutters very much. any idee what to do?
Are you in full screen mode and try having vsync off? I’m not entirely sure, but those usually work for me and did on dying light 2
I don't know why I never started this one, I've owned it on two consoles for a while now and really enjoyed rise of the Tomb Raider.
Just started it up on PS5 and it is absolutely gorgeous. I've heard people say this one is a bit of a letdown after that but I already really love the jungle setting and just kind of finding my way around the hub world.
i love all three games, they all offer something fun. and yes, this game looks the best visually!
it's still an awesome game but i'm dispointing about the mystery of lara's father
i was expecting it to be way more developed in this game
and that's sad because they probably won't make a 4th game
so it ended with a poor ending

This game is amazing but it’s WAY better when you do the DLC stream. I saw a Twitch Streamer playing this and they avoided ALL the side quests and DLC tombs…then had the nerve to complain it has no Tombs! That it did feel like Tomb Raider. Then jumps right back into Tomb Raider 1 for the thousandth time instead of rectifying their problem with Shadow. Literally. I can’t stand that kind of obtuse behavior from Classic fans. You have the content right there. You’re avoiding it purposely! I didn’t have access to that DLC cuz it didn’t even release when I got it day one! That’s my excuse.
oh for sure, it's good to take your time and explore everything tbh. it's so good, kinda underrated
I played this game about a year ago and i thought the visuals wasn't all that good and liked rise better but since then i reinstalled my windows 10 and went back to it and somehow the visuals stood out to be fantastic so i am now playing it again and just amazed how wrong i was and why i went out and bought the Dlc new tomb missions to make the game worth going back to it. So it must of been that my windows wasn't installed right and even the ray tracing stands out but before i couldn't see much difference with it on even though i updated my graphics drivers when there a new one out.. But i still didn't like the story and the costumes design along with the environment setting and characters. In that respect that all still goes to how good rise is in that department more engaging story and characters with a interesting story.
i think the whole modern day tomb raider series is great and does what it needed to do, some games more balanced than others. such a fun experience imo!
Playing Shadow now and the visuals to me are the best of any game I've played in 20 years.
@@77dris I haven't played the new Avatar game but watched so many 4k gameplay and for me it is the best looking game that i have ever seen so far and in 2024

fair enough, depends on how much players like it
People wanted less action coming out of Rise, which the critique at the time was that it had to much action, and not enough tombs. Make up your dam mind.

Idk it literally looks like it plays the same as tomb raider 2013 which i finished 100% about 50 times. i think i'll pass
Fair enough, all of the games don’t have drastic differences, mainly just visuals being upgraded and this game looks the best. As well some new gameplay tweaks. Overall it’s just extra content after a few years
personally , i found it very boring to play. The puzzles are clearly for stupid people , they are so easy even on "hard" . The combat sucks and the whole story is boring as hell. Uncharted Legacy of thieves was 10 times better
