    I think the thing here is that every so often when you find yourself shouting at the screen: "Where is your defense!?" .... usually there was a kick that pulled a key player out of position, or a ruck that pinned a key player in the ruck.

    9:43 In the Finn example, it's not that he knew it would amount to 5 points. But he did know what Squidge was saying, that he puts Italy in a tricky situation that could either lead to a big net gain if Padovani kicked it out or it could lead to a counterattack situation

    The thing is Squidge isn’t giving too much credit a lot of rugby players focus on video analysis in the attempt to frustrate the other team he’s actually very good at picking up things. The kicking tennis is also meant to frustrate one team and invite them into a counter-attack in the hopes that your team can either force a knock on and get the ball back or that they will kick badly slice the kick thinking they have so much time and give you a line out in a good tactical position it’s also about making the wingers and fullbacks cover more ground to run more to tire them out. it’s also to be such a threat that a defensive line has to continuously keep three players back potentially four players to cover the kick which weakens a defensive line and creates space to attack. Even the threat of the kick has to be taken seriously.

      This is what makes Rugby so beautiful. The amount of niggle involved in it, be it kicking tactics or just plain grubbiness to try and piss the other team off. There is a very strong emphasis on machiavellianism in Rugby, where in the real world such behavior has consequences and isn't very enjoyable, in Rugby it can be enjoyed and studied.

    9:20 ‘Finn Russell has no idea that this dude (Padovani) is gonna call the mark and kick it’ Yes, he does. He’s anticipating it as it’s the only thing Padovini can do in his position: he was cornered. Which was Russell’s plan all along, and the way he did it is being able to read the game which comes from the 10yrs experience he has in professional & international rugby. This form of kicking is primarily used to outplay opponents and catch them near or on their own line..

  • @eEridani
    @eEridani Рік тому +2

    There are 2 types of kicking: defensive and offensive.
    The ping-pong rugby that you are talking about generally results form an initial kick from the kicker's own 50 in order to release pressure and put the play in the opposite 50 (or at least as far as possible).
    The important thing to understand here is that if a team kicks the ball out, it gives possession back to the other team (unless it's a 50:22). So most of the time, the kicking is made to gain territory and try to apply pressure but without letting the ball into touch unless it's really close to the goal line.
    But you have to consider the angle. If the player is close to the touch line, his kicking angle will be very narrow.
    If he puts the ball out, he will most likely gain verry little territory and give the ball back to the other team. That's bad obviously.
    So what he does is he kicks the ball toward the center of the field (aiming for a space not covered by opposing players), so the ball go as far as possible, ideally bounces, but probably won't go into touch.
    It is highly probable that the opposite team will gather the ball and kick it back the same way.
    This is when you get the ping-pong kicking rugby that doesn't look very entertaining but could result in a big gain in territory for the team that kicks better.

    Defense in pro rugby nowadays is at a point where it is very difficult for the attacking team to force a line break. If a defense is set and ready (all on their feet, flat line, good spacing)it is almost impossible to find space for the attacking team to exploit. This is partly down to players being faster, stronger, fitter than they have been in the past as well as having a higher standard of defense coaching (such as tackle technique, tackle choice, reading attacks, opposition analysis). Therefore attacking teams need to manipulate the defense by forcing more players (such as wingers, fullback, 9,10 maybe even n8) into the backfield by kicking the ball to space (kick tennis), this means there is less ppl in the defensive line and therefore more space for line breaks. As Squidge said the most successful teams atm are those with a strong kicking game, unfortunately for those that don't enjoy it like yourself I can't see it changing any time soon with defenses only getting better it is necessary for success (stats don't lie, most of the time XD)

    @alja2199 Рік тому

    Respect your preference and mad respect for you watching this video. Squidgy does a deep dive on every video he makes and I hope he shouts you back
    Essentially, because kicking is such a cheat code and physiologically 80 minutes is a long time to "run it straight", the kick tennis is a great way to open up the space to create "run it straight" mismatches. Teams have meetings all week about the opposition to learn where to kick that week and all pro teams will have players who practice tactical kicking. As a winger, these kick tennis sections change the momentum of a game. When you have two close teams like Ireland and France, this kick tennis is what allows the winning team for the extra 3 momentum shifts to win the game
    When you watch the highlights its annoying you see the short clips of when the kick tennis ends up with one team fucking up

  • @TheLK641
    @TheLK641 Рік тому +1

    I think the things you didn't get from the video is that the rugby you want to see wouldn't exist without tennis kicking. If you want to see the risky offensive rugby you like, you need disorganized defense, and disorganizing defense can either be gone by doing 20 or 30 phases or by kicking two or three time. You say Squidge is giving them too much IQ, but kicking is like chess, pattern A leads to reaction B which leads to consequence C. Pro teams spend days preparing for matches learning what the opposition usually do and how they react to specific tactics. While it's not completely deterministic, they can predict what will lead to a better outcome way better then we can because that's their job. In the Scotland v. Italy video for example, the kicker doesn't know it's going to lead to a try, but he knows 90% of the time this is going to lead to a good situation for his team. How good ? Who knows, but still, a very good one, because his organized team is reducing the options of the disorganized opposition so much that they can already setup the counters to most (if not all) choices Italy might make. The question of "why do people kick back" is because, while it's a bad choice, it's the least bad choice they have.

  • @Keeks749

    I feel like the kicking would be more important if you were watching full games. It can be hard interpret the point of a particular exchange when you get dropped into the middle of it during a highlights video. The overall opinion of kicking is starting to change since the 5022 rule came in, the fans are starting to see the value in it. The more attention you pay to it, the more interesting an arm wrestle it is.

  • @PatrickBrown924
    @PatrickBrown924 Рік тому

    Kicking is about trying to pull the defence out of shape, to make space for runners. If you never kick it, the other team can keep their defensive line tight and your runners can't get through it. But if they're having to turn round and go backwards to cover kicks, that creates gaps. The best kickers know how to deliberately pull a defence out of shape, just like a good baseline tennis player. Finn Russell's particularly good at it, so's Romain Ntamack. The running is the fun stuff, no doubt about that, but the kicking is what opens up the field and makes it possible.

    It’s just like all aspects of the game. Sometimes players perform the kicking tennis badly.
    There is a plan, just not a good one. What squidge is showing is how kicking, if done well, is a very important part of the game.
    With so much analysis in games these days, it’s not so important how many kicks. If so everybody will just look at the best kick and go out with a plan to kick one more. Rather it’s the intention of the kicks. There is a lot of strategy and planning for game situations where the kicks would be employed.
    I think what annoys most people is those times in a game where teams seemingly run out of ideas so just kick aimlessly. However, the problem is not that they kicked. It’s that we had to watch players go through moments of being unsure what they doing, which isn’t particularly exciting.

  • @breandanhamon1243
    @breandanhamon1243 Рік тому +1

    I agree and disagree on you about giving players all the credit, like they wont know exactly how it will work out, Finn Russell wouldnt have known that kick would get them the try, but what should be mentioned more is teams do hours of analysis on their opposition so they can try to predict how they will attack and defend, so they know what sort of plays and kicks and defensive positions they can use to get the upper hand, with his kick he wouldnt have known they would get a try, but he would have known that putting a ball down that channel would have made it extremely difficult for Italy to do anything productive with the ball, so he can be confident that it will give his team a good position to launch an attach. Overall I can understand if you don't enjoy the kicking aspect of the game as much, like nothing beats a good counter attack breakaway try or a chip and chase, but I hope after that video you can appreciate more how important those types of kicks are, even if it seems like the kick was for nothing, it (almost) always has a purpose, especially if your team initiates the kicking, whether it works out is then down to the quality and abilities of the kickers and players around them to execute the plan

    A lot of us don't like it, but like you we understand it. Its like the NFL with the fair catch maybe as an example. I'd like to see the kick returner run the ball no matter where he is.. perhaps the defence have to give him atleast 5 yards so that they don't get to line up an easy hit if thats fair.. but the push for the kick returner to run the ball at every opportunity would create more exciting gameplay instead of calling a fair catch and 40 seconds of players setting up and then walking off the field because the ball was kicked 10 yards to far to be worth running wouldn't happen.

  • @markchristopher2373

    As a player you have to outsmart the opposition

  • @alja2199
    @alja2199 Рік тому

    Teams understand the importance of kicking, so if you watch or listen to a game closely, as a player receives a kick you'll see and hear his teammates (usually backs) point out or shout about where the opportunity is to counterattack (where to aim your kick or where to run).
    I only play amateur 15s, but we practice this in training. The pros have been doing this for 15+ years and have the best full time coaches, so they make it look effortless and like its chance because everyones on another level. But Squidgy is right, some of these players are genius because they and their teammates can anticipate how a kick will affect you. They do all of that whilst also appreciating how to set up an attack for a big Tuilagi to run over you
    When you identify the weak link to kick to (the player who can't kick, catch or run it back, but plays in the backfield) you bully that mf lol

Just because its hard to understand doesnt mean the players dont know what theyre doing. If they didnt then there wouldnt be players that consistently kick better than the rest because everyone would be stabbing in the dark.
    Top teams will have hundreds of calls at the lineout and change them constantly. Thats just one facet of the game and there is no reason to think that the other facets wouldnt be as complex.

    2:55 you probably missed the panel tittle change, switching from "most kicks from hand" to "most tries scored" right at the moment you paused to talk about contacting Squidge
    also, it's not that they know what WILL happen. It's they know what MAY happen if they shuffle the opponent enough to open space just by by pocking at the right place many times in a row.
    a kicking game will be boring between 2 "bad" kickers teams
    a kicking game will be one sided between 1 good and 1 bad kickers teams
    a kicking team will become very "intellectual" between 2 "good" kickers teams... the problem being: we are not trained/used to understand in real time what each kicker want to achieve in really when they're good. It's easy to spot when someone kick out of desperation. Not so much to get the intention in real time while the game is happening. Most of us will need to watch the replay to understand how a beautiful play with a lot of running and passing in fact originated in a series of kicks started 2 minutes before, because it removed KEY players from an area they were needed to defend, right where the running latter happen.
    You don't have to LOVE kicking game. Just to give it a chance and admit that it's often setting the conditions for a more spectacular type of play just after.
    French spectators used to hate the kicking game because let's face it, we didn't often have good enough kickers to oppose the English team that used it very much. Being on the receiving end of many well placed kicks isn't fun. On the rugby field as in a fight. Nowadays, the French like it way more. Because we have better kickers, because even the "peon's eyes" get used to understand/expect what may happen and /or recognize latter on that what happened was due to those "boring" moves a few play before. It just take watching a lot of games with good kickers to get used to it.

    bro you should start getting into the NRL if you want less kicking. Rugby League is a much more basic game you get 6 tackles and a kick on the last tackle most of the time kinda like American football crossed with rugby union. Because of the tackle limit and the 10-metre space you get after each tackle, there is much harder running and big hits, there are probably fewer clean breaks and big runs, but you still get a lot of that.
