“He’s big” = Ma’a Nonu. My husband’s all time favorite player.
Rugby Union games run for 80 mins, 40 each half (or phase). No ad-breaks (other than halftime), no water-breaks etc, just 80 mins + extra time of unadulterated intensity.
They run around in goal, because the conversion kick is taken directly out from where the ball makes contact with the ground. So, the closer to the posts, the better, for the kicker. Not, automatically infront, like NFL.
The no downs makes this a fast paced creative and exciting game requiring tremendous stamina. Jonah Lomu the GOAT was offered a huge NFL contract and turned it down for the love of this game.
Never heard that, & back then, at lazy when he started, rugby hadn't turned pro, only after '95 wc did they start getting paid
@@kurtsudheim825 it was on one of those pieces about his life story. It also mentioned he was stabbed multiple times when young. I wonder if that caused the later weakness that lead to his kidney problems.
The Phase count is a shame stat. When a player is tackled they must release the ball and both teams can try to push the other team off it or heel the ball backwards. If the team which had the ball keep possession the next phase of play begins, it is not unusual to have many phases. If possession passes to the other team or a restart of play occurs from an infringement or ball going out of play then the phase count restarts. Would recommend seeing an explanation of rules by either Ninh or ex International player James Haskell. Welcome to Rugby, the grandmother of NFL and one of mny grandchildren of (actual )Football.
?...whoops, game not 'shame'
pass behind the back is a "Chistera" ;)
did anyone else notice how at 6:29 the guy leaves the tackle pile without a shoe?
7:00 clips are Jonah Lomu. GOAT
7:15 that’s Jonah Lomu, the goat. He’s considered to be the first rugby superstar.
If anyone is allowed to be a ball-hog it’s him lol.
Lol oh yea if he’s that caliber of player he got all the right to be a ball-hog
Yeah I was thinking myself that the other 14 on the field are there to get the ball to him :D
Believe it or not there were some "superstars" in earlier decades; they just didn't go on about that stuff all the time and there was no internet!
I think this is the magic of rugby, getting the ball flowing
The reason it's called a touchdown in american football is because the rules were originally derived from rugby, where have to physically touch the ball down, on the ground, to score.
Two halves of 40 minutes. Phase is like a down, but there’s no stopping. So 2nd phase (they can go up to way more than that - 7, 11, more) is like a second play in a drive. Maintain possession.
You might enjoy ..When Rugby Steppers Humiliated Opponents. Rugby's version of jukes.
That should be fun. Im going to check it out. Thanks for watching I appreciate it 🙏🏻
No 11 from New Zealand Jonah Lomu is one of the all time greats of the game a legend
what made him so special was he was so humble. he had these magic skills yet never let it go to his head. This made him so well respected that his funeral was a literal whose who of the best players of the game. RIP Jonah gone but not forgotten.
Believe me South African rugby fans mourned his death, he was very well respected here
i played it as a kid in New Zealand in Canterbury. Great fun, its crazy when it rains and all the mud lol
You've had a few "rugby players turn american football players" happen, Christian Wade or instance...
It's easier to go from rugby to NFL because of the differing skill sets, where as developing the fitness and all round game to become a rugby player having played american football is much harder, but they are very different sports in many ways (plus there is much more money to be made in the NFL, so you dont see it happen much the other way around).
League is easier for nfl players, or even 7's, like Perry baker, at least for the fast attacking players
This is the most beautiful game. “Elegant violence.” Spend some time and you will love it. Rugby World Cup is this fall!!
You should check out the local team for sure if you're interested. The social aspect is very strong in rugby (e.g. "third half" where both teams hang out after the game, sometimes more teams if for example both the men and women are playing at home). I've followed international rugby for a long time in Europe but only finally started playing while living in America, there are some differences but a lot of that spirit was there.
there was a rugby played that joined the NFL called Christian Wade there are some highlights on YT, he did quite well.
There are a fair few Rugby players that went to NFL after they retired from Rugby.
Main points.
No formal protective equipment required/enforced (i.e. helmet, pads, gum shields - some players wear leather head caps or strap up shoulders)
15 players each side - used to be no substitutions but with professional development mid-90's, now permitted 8 subs or replacements
Two 40-minute halves - ideally, 'non-stop' running game
Can only 'pass' back/behind - forward pass usually results in a scrum where the opposing team gets the feed into the scrum (a formal restart to game where forwards (usually #1-#8) pack down and push against each other)
Can kick and gather (as long as your chasers are behind the the kicking foot when ball is kicked forward)
Tries are scored by applying downward pressure of the ball on/over the goal line
A little tip. If you are wondering why, when the players have a chance to touchdown the ball but run towards the goalposts if they can is that you are awarded a conversion kick at goal after a try is scored for another two points. And you take that kick at the exact width of the pitch you scored it. Ie you get a try under the posts. Your kicker gets a go kicking at it from between the posts. If you score at the outer edge of the pitch. You have to take the kick from the edge of the pitch and to put it between the posts and over the bar. So the closer to the posts you touch the ball down. The easier it is for you kicker to score the extra two points.
There is a few failed/retired rugby players in the NFL and they do very well
2nd phase means 2nd piece of open play during live gameplay. Rucks separate each piece
A phase is the time a ball is in play between breakdowns. For example, first phase would be winning the ball at the lineout and passing to a centre who is tackled. Second phase would be winning the ball back from the ensuing breakdown and attacking again.
In rugby the clock stops during an interval including TMO checks, injuries and substitutions. This ensures the game is 80 minutes and none of the game time is lost.
America has a Major League Rugby competition check it out you might find a team in your state or close to you cheers bro
You should watch "When Rugby Steppers Humiliated Opponents" great content bro keep it up🙏
ill check it out. Thank you for watching I appreciate it 🙏🏻
Rugby is rough but fairly safe because they tackle properly and not with their heads. Mostly cuts m, bruises and the odd broken bones.
it is rough but it looks fun to play. Thanks for watching I appreciate it 🙏🏻
Lots of rugby in NFL. Sadly, mostly kickers. Nate Ebner of the Pats comes to mind (not a kicker! 😂)
I love how Americans think it's a really fast game and then us rugby fans know the pain of a thing called a scrum 😅
There are two form of rugby, union league, this was all union & is the more popular form for the most part, depending on where you live (& I don't just mean country), league is closer to NFL, & they're was a thing just before union turned pro, so early- kid 90's where they had a "clash of the codes", two games, it'll be the closest you get to see between the different types going up against each other. Idk if you can find the full match, but you'll find enough h/l or a documentary on it. Game is two halves of 40 min. Phase is a play after the last "down": since there's no actual stoppage in play, not for tackles, play goes on so you have what is called a "ruck" (it basically looks like a dog pile), where the player with the ball was tackled has to release it & each team fights for it, usually the team who had it gets it back & that will be the next phase, but it can be "turned over" by the opposing team, in which case the phases will restart obviously as its for the other side. They also restart if there is a proper stoppage in play, & so the first one would be from that set piece to start again
you play 40 minutes in each direction with a 10 minute break in the middle when they change sides of the field so a game will last 90 minute unless there is over time and then it will go longer
Pacific islanders are the big hitters in world rugby
This is Rugby Union. Also known as “The Running Game”. Rugby Union the game they play in Heaven.
It's called a try which unlike American football once a player passes the scoring line the ball must be placed down on the ground with clear downward pressure from the try scorer.
Exactly a phase is the equivalent to a NFL down only difference is that in rugby union you get an unlimited amount of phases until a mistake, penalty or turn over is committed by the offence.
Unlike rugby league/NRL where your only allowed 5 tackles or downs as you would refer it to.
NFL vs Rugby Union/League! No contest!
Jersey Reds VS London Irish try of the season and only team to beat them that year in the championship, then Jersey went on and beat Russia before their world cup
You will notice they try to run it around over the line to get close to goal posts that is that the conversion kick is easier.
80 mins game with 40 min halves.
Thats a long game right there. Are they allowed to sub in and out or is similar to football where theres not much subbing players?
@@onejayp Subs are there if they consider the injured players or new reserves to leave or join the field. Else, the game just carry on without stopping for full 80 mins or more. Unlike American Football where different sets play defence and other set for offence, in rugby each players plays both roles depend on the situation especially at which side the ball is played.
Christian Wade... English Rugby player
if the ball is not passed forward the game goes on
In Rugby once the player is tackled the ball is still alive. Also when you score a try there must be grounded is you cross the try line but haven't put the ball on the ground the ball is still live. The game is two halves 40 minute per half only brakes if you score a try waiting for the goal kick and the kick-off and a penalty both of them are 2-3 minutes. So basically non-stop for 40 minutes 20 minutes brake and and non-stop 40 minutes. The has been a couple of Rugby League players play American football oddly enough there are too many set plays so if you haven't grown up with American football it is hard to learn all the players and that's apparently why there aren't that many who change codes. Rugby Union and Rugby League players change codes alot but not so much to the US.
You should check out Jared Hayne NFL, rugby player transition
He was not a Rugby transition, but a Rugby League transition
Tries are worth 5 points now, but way back they were worth 3 ( hence tri).
If you're wondering how these guys would go in the NFL check out Jordan Mailata. He is an Aussie who is playing in the Superbowl with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Im aware of who he is as of today. Someone told me about him and Jarryd Hayne
But he's a rugby league player there are two different codes rugby union and rugby league
League is a lot more quicker than rugby only 5 tackles each team
Union is more of a phase by phase that can as long as you want relatively speaking
I'm an avid fan of kickboxing and thai boxing and college wrestling I don't watch any NFL or NBA the only team sport I watch is rugby I just finished the first two games of the 6 nations Scotland beat England again
They play for 80 minutes 40 minute each half
40 min each way
Bro check out All Blacks vs USA 2021 Rugby highlights

Try great NRL tries 😀 at least the teams can tackle!

Im going to check them out. Thanks for watching I appreciate it 🙏🏻
seriously guys? you're thinking, football was american??? ... or basketball?... or baseball???
you should watch french tries man, they are the most spectacular players along with New Z. This video is far from showing the best tries ever
Great as he was, Jonah Lomu isn't even the GOAT among Kiwi players. Dan Carter, for example, was a much better all-round player.
Why you call in America football when you play with hand's
The title was just clickbait, some decent tries but not greatest of all time
Thats the title the video I reacted to has 🤷🏻♂️
@@onejayp I never said it wasn't,I only meant to point out to you that these are not the greatest all times rugby tries.
Tu connais pas grand chose au rugby toi
Definitely not the greatest tries of all time, especially the first one.
Nowhere near the best tries every. Totally biased.
This video is rubbish , there should be at least 4 or 5 tries from the French National Teams....Ask any Rugby fan.
I think American football players would collectively piss and shit their pants if a rugby team were to step onto their pitch?
