Today we’re going to be taking a look at Mikel Arteta’s NEW 3-4-3 in Tactics Explained.
Since appointing Mikel Arteta as their manager, Arsenal have begun the process of transitioning the club in the post Arsene Wenger landscape, and whilst Arteta hasn’t kick started a huge climb up the table, the improvements both on and off the field will stand the Gunners in good stead for the future.
Despite being in charge for less than seven months, three of which were without any football whatsoever, Arteta has implemented two different systems.
He began his tenure using a 4-2-3-1 that attacked in a 2-3-5 but relied upon David Luiz to step into midfield and play progressive passes. But despite this modern attacking shape, Arteta mainly focused on making Arsenal difficult to beat. And whilst this system saw an improvement, Arteta did away with it in favour of a 3-4-3, which has seen Arsenal pick up an impressive 2.2 Premier League points per game when they’ve used the system, as well as pick up victories over Liverpool and Manchester City in the space of three days.
But how does the system work?
Taking a simplistic look, the shape features an extra defender which offers extra security for the Gunners. This system has seen Arsenal become more restrictive rather than expansive, looking to stop the opposition playing before hitting them on the counter attack, which considering the personnel at the club, isn’t a bad thing.
Arteta’s pragmatism has allowed Arsenal to become more effective without the ball, which has allowed them to protect their soft underbelly in the centre of defence and implement a high pressing game.
What’s improved Arsenal’s press so much under Arteta hasn’t just been the structures, although they are very good. What’s improved them has been the mentality set by Arteta. Arsenal’s players are now active and looking to force mistakes rather than being passive and waiting for mistakes, like they were under Emery.
Whilst in possession, Arteta has implemented some progressive tactics. Arsenal build out from the back, with their left centre back and left back shifting into, creating a 4-2-2-2. As they progress up the pitch their shape transitions to a 3-2-2-3 with the wing backs holding the width and occasionally a midfielder dropping to create a base diamond. Offering Arsenal control of the ball whilst the forwards are all free to drop off the line and receive to feet. These build up structures are very good, not only allowing Arteta’s men to retain possession through their passing options but also make use of the good passing ranges of David Luiz, Dani Ceballos, Granit Xhaka and Mustafi, whilst the third centre back, often a full back, offer recovery pace if Arsenal do get caught out.
However, the big change is how active the front three are. Now they’re closer together they can link more effectively and create space for one another. Whereas before the break, Arsenal’s front three operated more like a winger, inside forward and a striker, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looking to get in behind from wider positions. However now the trio are operating more like three strikers and it’s proving to be very effective. Lacazette, Aubameyang or Pepe have either scored or assisted 83% of Arsenal’s last 12 goals in all competitions.
But anyway guys what do you think? Have you been impressed by Arteta’s back three? And do you think it’ll be Arsenal’s default system next season? Let me know in the comments below.

I think telling people to change to VPN to watch MOTD is technically promoting illegal activity.... might want to be careful on that
Why aren’t you a manager?
If he has the midfielders and defender, he would definitely use 4-3-3 next season.
Nah I think 4231
With the tactics he has shown us so far... A hybrid of 4-3-3 is going to be his priority.. If Arsenal can sign a No.10 the midfield will probably be Torreira, Ceballos and new no.10 or Torreira, Xhaka and New No.10. But for all of this to work, They also need a back up to Torreira. Or he will have to shift back to 3-4-3 with David Luiz when torreira gets injured or something.
Cosmicsword203 Naa torreira and xhaka are not good enough, sell them.
@@cosmicsword203 If Arteta can sign Ceballos for another year or permanently, I see ceballos and Xhaka being the midfield pair
Toure_90 nah Xhaka has definitely been good enough
Arsenal are really good when the opposition is frequently attacking (they defend much better) (games against LIVERPOOL and MAN CITY), but they can't create enough chances against teams that sit deep . Game against ASTON VILLA is a perfect example of that. ARSENAL's midfield was unable to penetrate and provide service to front three. A creator is very essential for ARSENAL (ball playing midfielder)
Another thing is that arsenal is very much vulnerable in set pieces. That must be sorted
You are totally right, we really need a number 10
@@unclesam9243 ozil was worth a shot 🤷♂️
The reason behind Arsenal's loss against aston villa is that when you are facing teams that sit deep, you need a creative player in half spaces and not a forward. Auba and eddie played inside forwards and occupied those spaces. That did not work because they are not good at making those through balls through the crowd of players around them. Players like ozil, david silva , messi can do that. That is why they struggled because arsenal lacks in that department. They don't have those kind of players other than ozil who is not going to play for arsenal anymore (in my opinion).
@@cosmicsword203 agreed
@@mohamedtwalib7757 so, who do you think should Arsenal look to sign for that role with the budget that they have?? Because those type of players are rare, Either Highly valued in the market or Not good enough for Arsenal level. In my opinion, With Norwich and Aston Villa going down, Arsenal can look to sign Buendia or Cantwell or Grealish. Maybe even James Rodrigues who is out of favor at Madrid and available for 30m as the rumours say. If Coutinho deal happens then no problems though..
Arteta is on the right track. Things were a mess when he arrived. Now he needs to clear out the deadwood and strengthen in some areas and they will be able to challenge for top four.
📠
and it will take time, maybe 2-3 seasons, maybe more... depends on how much budget the club is willing to put out and whether they are lucky with their signings (sometimes, its a hit or miss).
@@HenSt-gz7qj Under Arteta lately they have been winning... A LOT... if they can maintain this level of points per game they will be very strong for a top 4 seed next season... and honestly, they don't need big signings... they need smart ones... I mean Leicester bought Tielemans for god's sake and he's a beast of a midfielder... why can't Arsenal make smart moves like that... you don't have to spend 100 mil to get a top quality midfielder... also remember this... Aubameyang, Lacazette, Pepe, Ceballos, Saka, Leno and Bellerin are all top quality players... and Martinez has been playing out of his mind as Leno's replacement now that he's out... Arsenal's roster is much stronger than people think... they were just playing terrible football...
We certainly need CBs... Luiz is ok but his ridiculous mistakes make him a meme so often... Mustafi has been really good lately... almost reminds us of Valencia's Mustafi... but we need to sign a top quality CB... not another Sokratis (and I say that while I'm greek... the guy just can't play at this level anymore... he's been terrible)... we need a truly great CB... are we willing to play for one though? A nice choice would be a guy like Romagnoli of Milan if they're willing to sell for a hefty price... he can pass the ball, has good ball control and he's very very VERY solid defensively (the man is Italian after all)... I think for 40-50 mil Milan maaaaybe will consider it... but at this point I think Arsenal should invest on defenders first of all and after that they need to buy some good midfielders to go along with Xhaka and Ceballos cause Arteta is literally making them slave away cause he has no one to replace them with... Guendouzi is clearly a lost cause... the kid think's he's a superstar or something... let some other team deal with his shit-filled brain...
i dont think arteta good enough
@@mustafaabdullahi5031 Dude, 1) With Arteta Arsenal has been playing very respectable football... and they've been getting better and better...
2) Explain to me how Arteta is not good enough and Solskjaer is somehow a great coach? Cause I think Solskjaer is good... but I think Arteta is even better cause his team is only getting better and better...
why are there dislikes? people think they know better than our guy dave

@Leman Russ wouldnt be me since im a man united fan 😂
"Putting the Sword to the Fraud"...you got that spot on mate 😂😂
Arteta took what he had and made the best with it he could - the signs of a world-class manager.
The new system also fixes the entire Tierney or Saka at LB problem.
Tierney plays as the left CB, which he's amazing at, and Saka is deployed at LWB - giving him enough freedom to drive forward.
Amazing stuff and with a few additions and the permanent purchase of Ceballos, Arsenal can attack the top 6 next season!
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves buddy, we need more additions than just keeping Ceballos. We will be in the same place if we keep our poor players and don’t add depth in the midfield and defense.
@@Raaazzle True but with Saliba being an option next season and lowering the amount of goals we concede significantly I think a number 10 is the most crucial position we need occupied at the moment.
Starting lineup next season:
ST- Laca
LM- Auba
RM- Pepe
CAM - Grealish or James
CDM - Xhaka
CDM - Ceballos
LB - Saka
LCB - Tierney
RCB - Luiz
RB - Bellerin
GK- Leno or Martinez (both are Class)
Josue M I agree but I don’t rate Grealish as much as others, and I think Saliba should start whether it’s a straight swap for Luiz or if it’s for Tierney we could play Tierney LB and move Saka farther up. Or possibly sticking to the back 3 and taking Mustafi out and keeping both Luiz and Tierney in there, but a lot of ppl think Arteta want to play a 4-3-3.
@@Raaazzle In attack we play in a 3-4-3 and Saka fills that LM position allowing Auba to play as a striker. Saliba is 19, Tierney is 21 we need experience at the back that's why we need Luiz until we can buy a Class CB. Xhaka is playing good dropping into the defense on attack. We should defend in a 4-2-3-1.
@@Raaazzle Grealish is great as he finds space and time to make a forward pass.
SHUSH! Don’t give our game away before the FA Cup final! Hopefully Lampard doesn’t watch this.
Lmao 😂
Well said

Lol😂
You’ve truly become a mid table club
Well arsenal need a CAM, amine harit from schalke is a good option, he's young and known for his decision making, if arteta doesn't trust ozil anymore probably he want to replace him in the summer
Right back, DM CB are all more important then a 10
We are trying to get cousin home on loan
@@jamie-leeprice5621 yeah i agree but ozil is still a problem
Sign grealish or harit from a Barca fan
@@jamie-leeprice5621 Actually, CAM is more important than DM and RB.. Maybe A CB is most important position to invest then a CAM and then a DM.

0:25 "Ungulo Kante". Come on Dave
As much as this is working for us. I still feel arteta would ultimately any to play a 433 system one he gets the players he needs. This just feels like a stop gap
Brilliant analysis, Dave. Keep 'em coming!
The mini recreation of each game was very detailed and it was obvious that someone worked really hard to do it. Props to you.
It is never talked about enough,it is the next level of editing
your presentation is spot on...best tactic explaining bro
i love your explanation, may you explain about how zidane made it possible to field all of his midfield (modric, casemiro, kroos, isco and valverde) in one game? i would love to hear from you, cheers
Spectacular video, well broken down and well visualised
Superb analysis... 👏🏿
I do prefer this formation for sure ✔✔ Especially with the players thay we currently have!
Thanks Dave ⚽🔥
Great vid, Dave! Love how Arteta seems to be getting the best out of what he has. Regardless of what formation he goes with long term, Arsenal need some major reinforcements. A top notch CB to play along side Mari or Saliba. Lyon’s Jason Denayer would be awesome. His positional awareness is outstanding. His off-the-ball-movement is world class. Would be a great partner for Saliba/Mari/Luiz. An attacking, ball carrying midfielder will be important at some point, but a new, long-term DM is probably another priority. Thomas Partey would be perfect, but unlikely. Maybe Danilo Pereira from Porto. He’s been on fire for them this season and is an all round great player.
Great vid, well done.
Ive enjoyed his approach with the three atb. It's clear he knows he can't change this side over night, especially with these players, and thus his approach has shifted against what would be his philosophy in favor of getting results.
I can't wait to see how his team will progress once they have a Saliba, possibly another center back and a defensive/attacking midfielder. Personally I think they need a more rounded defensive midfielder. I think given their fullbacks tensity for getting forward and super crossing ability they need to be more rounded in the center of the field. If they were able to get a Partey I could imagine the the team would play very similarly to Klopp's side and how they initially played mid season.
LOVE THE ANALYSIS
Wonderful analysis
Great video yet again Dave, I've said this many times the 3-4-3 is a way of not to fit square pegs in round holes. Arteta doesn't want to play this way, but he doesn't have the choice with the players that he currently uses. Once the summer is over, he'll go back to 4-3-3
Given the success he has had with it,I wouldn't be surprised if we see it a lot more in future.
can you please make a video on gigenpress?
@Statman Dave, could you do a video on Premier League defensive midfieders like Douglas Luiz and Yves Bissouma?
I love what Arteta has managed to do with this squad, with proper backing we can be challenging for Europe again next season, the spotlight is really on the Kroenke family now as to whether they properly invest in Arteta's vision or not
Amazing vid as usual
Could you drop the name of the app or website that I you use for your analysis?
Love it Dave, more Arsenal please
Plz make a video on how Jose can improve spurs transfers formation and tactics
Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻
Arteta has a good vision, he knows how to get the best out of the team, watch them win the F A Cup. Blessings to all. SMILES.
Great stuff :)
i feel like in this system (when kolasinac was the left centre back and tierney lwb) the left centre back doesnt contribute enough too the team since tierney works hard enough to get back and help, yes it brings more defensive solidarity because you have more numbers behind the ball, but in attack he provides little too nothing that a back 4 couldnt already provide
3 cbs I love.. AMN and Tierney double up down the left was good to see.. Thought they worked really well. Felt. Abit more secure than saed. Lacking a bit of creativity as shown against deep sitting teams like villa. This will change with the right signings. I feel comfortable watching now, I used to feel sick everytime mustafi touched the ball. Defence have improved dramatically and have shut alot of people up. Using laca as a false 9 is delicious with wide players a bit narrower. Direction is great. Arteta is god.
I've got faith in Arteta, he has a drive to improve this club to be a elite club and the players look on board as well as the staff, 2-3 years this club will be a powerhouse again.
Where do I get the animations
Great video! But you didn’t talk about Martinez who in my eyes has been one of out key player ever since Leno got injured
I love 4-3-3 but with the current players that we have, this is the best system that we can used. 4-3-3 system requires good defensive midfielder , good defender and press high as well.
Can you bring us that camavinga stat report please
Love this Video Dave. Best analysis I’ve seen on Arteta
Captured the fluidity perfectly
@Statman Dave - The question I have has nothing to do with Arsenal but CB problems in general, especially MCI's. I always wondered why Pep G. never played Walker as a CB instead of Fernandinho and never used Cancelo to his full potential? . Considering Walker has experience playing as a CB and have Cancelo who's been brilliant whenever he was given a chance in all units as a RB where his passing acc was- 90% vs 89% for walker , creating chances - 1 vs 0.6 per game, 2.4 vs 1.0 tackles/game, 2.2 VS 0.8 success dribbles and really better at winning duels 6.1 (57% won) vs 3.3 (49% won). This would have allowed Fernandinho to play his natural position CDM, but could have also dropped back to join the CBs whenever needed defensively and strengthen their defense. Any thoughts?
Dave please make a video about how Xavi couldnt manage Barcelona.
Many expect him to take the job.
And maybe who else there could take the barcelona job, dont think Sertien is good enough.
Defensively they are set up similar to Wales during some of the qualifying or Euro 2016 games and at the finals, The FA Cup semi final was like watching a rerun of Wales 1-0 win over Belgium in 2015 when Arsenal didn’t have the ball.
Do a video on Man utd either transfers to make or playstyle
Hey Dave, you think Arteta will play the same 4-3-3 system as Pep Guardiola’s City team in the Future?
I think 343 might be the future for arsenal. it plays to pepe, bellerin, luiz and xhaka's strengths and it will be easier for saliba to adapt since he played with a back three in st atiene.
You do realise 3 4 3 is a formation for counter attack football
I do think it's Arteta's ideal but he's been making do with what he's got
@@Tomanna I think he has shown he can take us forward. He made Mustafi a decent defender, helped pepe to settle, beat the two biggest team in the world, made our defence better than it was and most of the games we

When we get coutinho he is gonna be our playmaker in the amf
Arsenal should sign a Left footed Centre Back, so that if they need to play 3 at the back they will have a proper player on the left of the back 3 and they could also go with a back 4 if they feel secure enough.
Arteta will play with 433 as main system next season if he get his dream player. Next system is 343 and 4231.
What arsenal need:
Partey CDM, Left foot CB. We do have mari but still injured.
What arsenal doesn't need:
Mkhitaryan, Kolasinac, sokratis, ozil, guendouzi, chambers
433;
Leno, bellerin, Saliba, Mari, KT, partey, xhaka, ceballos, aubameyang, lacazette, Saka.
343:
EMI, mustafi, Holding, Luiz, Cedric, Torreira, Willock, AMN, Martinelli, Nketiah, Reiss Nelson
4231:
Leno, Bellerin, Saliba, Luiz, KT, Partey, Xhaka, Pepe, Emile Smith Rowe, Aubameyang and Lacazette
Man,
Quit ending your sentences with the inflection.
Hello Dave! I am new to the channel and was wondering if you were a gunner or not. So the question is: do you support Arsenal?
Isnt 3 at the back pretty much forced because of hiw shite the cbs currently are? Just fits the personnel right?
The 3-4-3 is a good temporary fix because Arteta lacks the personnel he needs for his desired formation. If he gets 2 trusted Center Backs (Mari, Saliba, Sarr???), a solid CM (Partey) and a CAM (Auoar, Szoboslai), will allow him switch back to 4 defenders, which will make room for a Central Attacking Midfielder, thus allowing him to dominate games the way he would like in a 4-2-3-1

@@kevinsheridan1257 he isn't bad. Villarreal don't have pressure of top 4 or top 6. He performs well in such situations. And arsenal didn't buy him the players he wanted like Zaha or partey. So can't really blame him
This is going to change next season to a 4-3-3 when we are going to buy a CB and a creative/scoring CM to play alongside Ceballos and Xhaka
I think that Arteta should continue using this formation against the bigger teams. However, we should surely look to revert to a 4321 if we would like to have the same attacking threat, but still maintain our solidity and attack weaker oppositions.
Conte won the league with 3-4-3 not too long ago. There's definitely potential in that formation
Arteta knows his stuff
tactics how to finish 10th
It's working so well with 5 shots on target in 3 games.
3 games is a small sample size. The focus here is on a clear improvement of a team's mentality and tactical awareness.
Arsenal had 5 shots on target against Manchester City alone.
@@praz7 Sorry it was 10 shots on target in 3 games. Averaging 30% possession. Tragic
@@chrisking9700 that's come with zero attacking midfielders in the team.
@@praz7 Pepe, Ceballos, Willock, Saka, Laca and Auba. Not exactly shy of players going forward. Got outworked against Villa, and there's a danger Watford could do the same. Chelsea/City were smash and grab. I really don't rate the approach. This approach would be okay for a smaller club, but not Arsenal.
In my opinion Arsenal need to invest in a young left footed CB to play alongside Luiz and Mustafi (Both of them have been great recently under Arteta ) , sign Ceballos permanently from Madrid who has a great partnership with Xchaka and Convince Auba to sign da ting .....This is enough to secure a top 4 spot next season I hope
Why would they they have Mari already who is left footed and saliba is young and right footed
@@rsabesan5716 I know but you need some young fresh talent who has the potential to be a worldclass CB and play alongside Saliba . Moreover , most of your center backs are aging ....Luiz is 33 sokratis 32 mustafi 28 and Mari still didn't prove himself ...so it will be great addition if the club can add some youth in the team
Malang Sarr
I will explain: Defend till we die!
Bro make a video comparing all the Manchester United manager post Ferguson era.
3-4-3 or whatever system he used is fined as long as Someone can score goals. The addition will be to have a midfield to score more. But this is unlikely cause Ceballos is more of a playmaker and Xhaka use to dictate the tempo and press. So ANM, who been asked to play inverted CM should try to score. And I see Arteta knows how to use Tierney so well. Look at liverpool for example, If there front 3 is out of form or been stop by opposition, Their midfield do the things(Ox, Wijnaldum). Maybe different system but Arsenal can play even more offensive. Arteta's Arsenal still developing cause Arsenal still Not good enough in taking chances. Mostly score 2 goals per game. And That's why Arteta try to make it hard for opposition to score/attack.
In conclusion, If Arsenal cannot play with back 4 again, Arsenal will never improve.
We need CB who have recovery speed so we can play 4 at the back. None of our current CBs want to be running back. This is a big reason why Arteta is playing 3 at the back.
Saliba could be the answer. Very similar play style to van dijk with the way he is built but inexperienced
@@rsabesan5716 he needs a partner. I'm confident that Saliba will do well.
Lets get this party started boi
sounds like the 3-4-3 is a holding pattern until they can strengthen the centre of defence.
I respect what Arteta has done at Arsenal. He took and 8th placed team and brought them all the way up to 10th.
This is a very simplistic way of looking at it. In the league under Arteta they have 29 points in 18 games. The 19 games that preceded that they had 20 points. That’s a significant improvement.
29 points from a possible 54 is not a good record. It only seems good because of how bad Arsenal were at the start of the season
ZakAttack789 it seems good because other than city and Liverpool the top teams are poor. Do the math that point rate all season and they’re in the champions league race. It’s a 64 point pace. It’s not good enough but it’s a much better measure than looking at league table positions.
Arsenal were 4 points off 19th place when he took over
I’m pretty sure he’ll use a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 but with the same mentality he uses as explained here in the video. I might be wrong as the -3-4-3 has worked during the restart.
Arteta is the right man for the job , the question is will the club back him with the money , because the current crop of players won’t be able to get us top 4 , especially if Auba leaves.
I think that Arteta won't shift to a 4-3-3 completely for next season. Against the other top teams, he will continue playing a 3-4-3 with intense pressing, a false 9 and fast wing play who have the options to cut in or go outside with the full-backs. Against the teams with low-block, he may play 4-3-3 with an attacking midfielder. It will take some time but maybe in the second half of the season or in the 2022 season, his attacking style will be more dominating. For the beginning of the 2021 season, I expect more pragmatism and flexibility; changing according to the opponent. This is not to say that Arsenal will be defensive, but like the video is showing, Arsenal are making more chances, making better chances and they are harder to beat which is something I haven't seen in a long time from an Arsenal team. Expecting another 3-4-3 in the "glorified friendly" community shield against Liverpool.
They're good defensively now... But I still feel the lack creativity
Yaa bruh...people don't understand how good arsenal has been since the restart... they've managed to progress from 9th to 10th
Arteta has proved himself. some results go against him... The board should back him, if they want him to succeed otherwise we will be midtable for some time..
I can see now, why they keep david luiz.
I loved the days standing in the north bank when we had the best defence the best in the world I thought and so did a lot of others including a lot of managers and I can see Arteta working the same way that George Graham did he’s building a great defensive team and all we need is a established central defender to play alongside Mari and maybe we will be competing again because we haven’t been for a while now
Depends if he buys new players or not
Carl Jenkinson
Vergil made a mistake🤯
What tactics were used vs villa disgrace of a performance then again our league form has been we have become a cup side next season we need to be more consistent but what squad will we have after the transfer window I fear it will be very poor with auba gone and not really replaced Torriera will also leave along with bellerin mAint niles sokratis the Board won’t back arteta with great funds
How lucky for spurs that they are also poor but will not have to worry about us for long while yet whilst we have to get used to finishing below Burnley
