Watching this makes me appreciate just how much of Deborah Harry's onstage persona was itself a kind of homage to or riff on Marilyn Monroe's. It's as if the song has returned to its primeval origins.

I always thought that Blondie was the modern Marilyn Monroe, with added attitude.
PMJ's arrangements/vocals are incredible, but I also love the costumes and the little extra touches and "Easter eggs" in the background, like the band sliding on in and the flute player holding the phone up to the trumpeter.

I quite agree. One of those bands where it's impossible to pick your favourite song.
And one of those bands people forget is actually a band. You say Blondie, people assume you just mean Debbie Harry.
I don't think Blondie is underrated. They rocked charts around the world, they were very famous and influential.
....they’re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Love the group. And some of their songs could easily fit into todays music. My Mum is a huge fan and so am I. In Australia they were popular. They have left a cultural impact here.
Fun Faxt: Marilyn and the studio band had been jamming while on break. The camera crew was able to record the last song, Call Me. Originally it was to be included in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes but Fox Studios ruled against it as it was outside the show girl theme, and would require extra scenes to made and shot to connect it with over all movie theme, and would have to be reshot due to the brass section coming in later. They had returned from break and joined in, not realizing the camera was running. However it was edited and colorized with Technicolor by the camera and director, and help solidify Marilyn's star status.
Okay but Tess looks absolutely DIVINE in this Ensemble and Hair! They're gonna need two best dressed awards for this and Haley's Seven Nation Army Dress!
Blondie was a personal favourite in the 70s & 80s. Add the PMJ touch, and what do you get: Something really special. Well done Scott Bradlee et al. Superb. Can't wait to see you live again.

I think Debbie Harry would really appreciate this interpretation of her 1980 hit single. Debbie and Chris (Stein) were always exploring new genres and sounds into their work with Blondie (old and new) and would definitely see this as a successful step in that direction ... Nicely done ...

Her voice reminds me of Duffy's and would be great for 60s style covers. Love her voice here too, though I'm not getting how it fits with Marilyn's style.
There's an airy "baby" quality that is reminiscent of Marilyn.
Her voice and breath control is too strong to be reminiscent of Marilyn's vocal style, IMHO. Still a beautiful rendition. She does have a great deal of the 'look' down though.
It's the "shimmy" that's reminding you of "The Blonde Bombshell"!

I'm sure Marilyn Monroe style refers to Tess' appearance, movements, etc. not the sound of her voice. Haley Reinhart's version of Oops I Did It Again with PMJ was described as Vintage Marilyn Monroe style. Again it was the appearance, dress, movements. etc. that were reminiscent of MM rather than Haley's actual singing.
Haley sang Call Me on American Idol. It was more a Rock version which she did superbly with her inimitable exuberance and great vocal range.

Absolutely brilliant arrangement
Superlative performance! Tess Mohr and the musicians sent this one of the proverbial park. (I liked how one of the musicians was holding a telephone receiver to the trumpet during the trumpet solo.) I've read and heard a lot about Marilyn Monroe and I think she would have been delighted and thrilled at this performance.
WOW! From the first "call on me" I was hooked to this young girls amazing voice. Scott you always find the best.
This rendition is out of this world. I never cared that much for Blondie. But I guess if you take a song and change the tempo and style. it can become a song that really stands out. Thank you for this.
