As a little gay boy in the 70's and 80's, I learned to hide who I was and what I was, constantly pretending to be something else in order to survive. The psychological grind and complete mind f--k is so hard to describe, it literally, slowly kills you. Eventually you say no more and become Billy or you die. I have many friends that put a needle in their arm, a bottle in their mouth or a gun to their head but I somehow survived. Seeing Billy on national TV makes me smile so much....Love ya, Billy!!

I totally hear ya. I’m a native New Yorker, and was in the advertising business as an art director, and even there, in one of the most liberal cities and industries, it was still who could you trust. The paranoia of losing your job, or “Gay bashed”. It was such a huge relief to finally just be fully out, professionally, as just my authentic self in the 90ties. Here’s to all us trailblazers, and a mighty roar for all the brave young LGBTQ folks out and proud today! ⭐️🌈🌟

He has the swagger of a successful performer alright, but he was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, attending a performing arts high school there, and even getting his BFA in drama from Carnegie Mellon. I feel that his roots are a big part of what makes him so lovable and authentically himself 😊

Oh wow I'm subbed to his channel. Billy really falls into his performances without being too hammy, but he is still in the mix with it. He seems like a genuine person, and that seems pretty rare. I like the fact Billy cares about other people being themselves and hope he's helping people in the LGBT do the same. Bigotry sucks in any form where it's homophobia or ageism or sexism or racism. They're all expressions of Hate and Ignorance, nothing more.

No slam here, but; This One is Little-Richard's Great-God-Child! ! To, be Bold enough to 'come-out' is one thing. Then to do so as a Minority, is another. To Put This 'ON Stage', well, yet another step-up! I 'get-it', how some are uncomfortable with this progression , but it's needed If we are to Accept that our World deserves this level of Talent. And, racist, best you check whether your mom's watched and liked, Danny Kaye, in the day.

Love Billy but as an older bisexual he's NOT the first just the most visible for this generation. I grew up with Bowie, Boy George, RuPaul, the incredible Pete Burns, Freddie Mercury, Grace Jones, Divine, Amanda Lepore, and Candy Darling...even adorable Uncle Miltie aka Milton Berle. Billy just has social media and PR but the above paved the way by the sweat of their wigs, the holes in their stocking, the runs in their makeup and swagger that never fades.

His advise sounds good on stage but not in the real world. People r shitty to others. I've been fired about 50x in 20 years for being trans (real talk no exaggeration).
Everyone loved me before my transition. Silly me, i thought they would get past "it".... Nope.
I haven't had any relationships with friends or family since. There was about 100 family members and many friends. I was always the person that was invited to events first.
The only thing i changed about myself was my clothing....
I've had 2 people call me this year, 2021....its now November.
I transitioned before all the " woke" nonsense. Nowdays i can barely maintain my mortgage because of constant ignorance and fear.
I'm pleased that my wife supports me but her family bailed on her because of me.
Does anyone here knows what it feels like to not be allowed to celebrate holidays, birthday's, anniversaries with the people you care about?...
I'm almost 50years old and I've been pushed out of life, family and friendships for being my "authentic" self...
My favorite is how many time i've been thrown under the bus by the so called LGBTQ "family"
I think the hardest pill to swallow was when I reached the point that I was completely passable that's when I got the worst abuse. When people would find out they would feel betrayed. And they didn't take it as a small betrayal they took it as a gigantic, monumental betrayal. Betrayal is reciprocated with disgust. Disgust is brought on by fear, then hatred, then violence.... I'm not going to list all the horrific things that has been done to me at this time but i will say it's a long list.
    It's all bs.
Here's a real advice... keep your "authentic" self hidden away from the world.

Faceted ink studio, what you’ve been through & are going through is awful.
I don’t have any deep sage-like advice to share with you except the following & it’s very simple: it’s hurts like hell to be rejected by people you love because they can’t handle the person you now are. However the bright side of this is that you find out who really cherishes you, you mentioned your wife -> love & cherish her, forget about the others (I know it’s hard, but you need to “cut your losses” & move on with your life. )
That will mean going outside your comfort zone & creating new friendships with people who will accept you & love you for who you are no matter what.
Full disclosure: I’m a married woman (traditional heterosexual, cis-gendered, etc.)
I almost died during childbirth & delivery, I lost so much blood that I had a stroke (I was a young & very healthy woman when this happened. I was in a coma after the birth. Somehow I survived but I was so damaged both physically & cognitively by the OB’s screwup that I couldn’t return to my career -> I was a pediatric surgeon & loved caring for others both w/in my vocation & in my personal life.
When I became disabled, my heart was further shattered (& shocked) by all the friends & family who no longer had any use for me because I was no longer the person I once was. That was 10 years ago. With TONS of therapy (physical, occupational, speech & of course psychological) I’ve been able to cobble together a new life. Through it all my husband has loved me & cared for me 1000%. I now have a new life, with a few of my old friends but I’ve made new & precious friends who accept me as I am.
Yes, our lives are very different but I see the important common thread that we share:
you & I have both fundamentally changed, we’ve been rejected by those who we cared for because they couldn’t handle that change. I think we’re both lucky, because we’ve been freed from the people who were really dead weight in our lives.
Like the old saying, “ everyone wants to ride along with you in the limousine, but you find out who your real friends are when you have to walk or take the bus”
I wish you all the best 😊!!

@@madyjules06 Thank you for sharing your story. This past year I've done a lot of soul-searching. I've learned a lot about myself. I've also learned the old saying "you don't know what you don't know" rather well, LOL. I found out that I didn't know as much as i thought i did.
General consensus, there is a lot of that in the 40s hehe.
You possess Amazing will power. I believe you're right. I even agree. I'm hung up on 1 little thing,
Is my decision a choice between being an outcast that can't support my own family or be treated like an idle, a hero, etc., that could possibly write my own ticket.
      Is the grass greener?
      In my case -
"We suffer far more in our own imaginations" - stoic philosophy
      -
I'm astounded with what you overcame. /tipsmyhat.
I will think deeply on your words.
      Thank you for the dialogue.

You can’t see this fine man’s strength, beauty, talent, compassion, creativity, humor, on and on-are you simply jealous or simply bereft of experience and understanding of life? After you develop your own mind, heart, and being, come take another look at the great Billy Porter and hopefully you will have learned to appreciate him.
