Love this house’s clean, minimalistic look. So refreshing after seeing so many tiny houses stuffed to the gills with so many finishes/surfaces and possessions.

It's a lovely home no matter how close you are to your parents. Although I too would prefer a shower and bathroom it's great you have your folks nearby makes family gatherings a bit easier.
Her dog is super cute!! Great job on her home. It’s very lovely. She did a great job! Very neat, clean, organized. Glad that she is thinking of her safety and incorporated safety features. It’s also dark much of the day in the winter so the flood lights are a great idea.
That’s so true about purging. My son kept bugging me to buy a big house. Then, he went to Costa Rica and experienced how many people live with almost nothing. My son is very grateful of what we have now and is now content living in a 4-bedroom house (small bedrooms). I think people need to travel abroad and see what other people have in other countries.
I loved this video. This is how the new Nuclear Family lives. You have your own place but you're still close to your family. Not for everyone, but in these odd times having your tribe around can be a survival essential. And how nice to see a family that wants to stick together.
Ugh give him a break. You are paying nothing to enjoy this awesome content and be let into someone’s HOME to essentially snoop around and learn from them. Have you considered using a "chamber pot" similar to what folks used to do before they had indoor toilets to pee in late at night rather than trekking out in the cold weather with the moose and bear, better yet, a portable diverted composting toilet?
I rigged up my own variation of portable toilet/chamber pot. It works great!! The coolest part it's hidden inside an ottoman! People come to visit and they have no idea that they're sitting on top of my toilet
This is in my top three favorite tiny house tour videos--a place I could actually see myself living in! The owner did an exceptional job--I especially love the kitchen and the overall main floor layout. Really well done!
@@qrm8772 she said shes on her parents land. Here, in.my statee, as long as theres already a house on the land in a rural area, you can do this same thing (put another house as long as it fits the size.) Ex, here you.can have an.acre of land i believe can house a permanent house and a 1,200 sq ft.max additional house or trailer. And i believe a larger or more additional homes for a bigger lot.
And her parents electric. Guess I'm in a cynical mood....she really has it easier than others who really are on their own.....but the outhouse?????No Way😖....and a bucket for gray water...carry a jug of water...no thanks. She does rough it but mom and dad are there to help. So many of these small house owners have family members who are in the construction business. Makes it 100% easier to consider. Hunting.....keeps meat stored at her parents I suppose. Soooo...still dependant on parents....but that's not all bad. Beautiful area 😊
It is a plus knowing someone who will let you use a part of their land, but not all of us are that fortunate. I'm quickly realizing my dream of my very own tiny home fading away due to the fact there's no available land around in my area to even put one of these homes on and I don't mean rent a space in a park (I'm currently in an apartment...been there, done that). Ridiculous zoning restrictions plus developers buying up the land to build horrid cookie cutter houses is very depressing, so where are people who want their OWN tiny home on our OWN land supposed to go? We are not rich, just everyday people struggling wanting to fulfill our lives with simple living in a tiny home. Definitely a dream crusher.
The interruption at the 5:00 mark really took away from this presentation. Could totally do without it. Plug yourself at the beginning or the end, and it would be better.
Jodie: well done, on your tiny house design/build! It looks like you and your parents came up with a win/win situation for you both. You have your own inexpensive and efficient way to live, your parents have someone they trust to keep an eye on their cabin. Keep on living your dreams; life is truly too short not to! BTW: I had to use an outhouse for about 2 years. It isn't as bad as people think, as long as you set it up properly for your situation.
Really adorable little house with a stunning view! Have you thought of closing in the underside of your bed instead of leaving it like rafters? You could make them into doors, put hinges on them and pull the doors down for more storage. Winter clothes you aren’t using for instance! As a woman of “a certain age” and taking certain medication there would have to be some sort of commode receptacle. I would be doing wayyy more laundry then what I would care to be doing. You definitely are blessed to be able to have such a sweet little home! Just sitting out kn that delightful deck is worth it!
I lived in a shed alone outside the main house when I was 9-14, and the outhouse doesn't seem that bad despite what people are saying lol, even in the late night hours. I'd definitely need a wet room being in Alaska though, the hair freezing is no no go for me 😂 this house is so nice and looks great, I'm glad she loves it!
Heck I was even thinking of a bucket for overnight and just get rid of it in the morning. I know when we used to go up north to the cottage before we had indoor plumbing, thats what we did. Most times when you prepare yourself before bed you usually don’t have to go out in the middle of the night anyway but if by chance you have to go...a bucket is always an easy and quick solution especially one with a tight fitting lid.
I liked the space could do a lot of different designs with it. I'd have thought living in Alaska she would have had a woodburner for those long, cold Alaskian nights. I'd defo need an inside bathroom, no fun getting up at 3am needing a wee & having to venture outside with god knows what lurking around. ( yeah you can tell I read alot of horrors).
Agreed... even in northern New England you don't want to be totally reliant on electricity. Even a very small wood stove can be a life saver. Hopefully she has at least a back up generator to run a heater. Short term... it's awesome but.. long term issue... what if her parents were to move?
If you prefer not to go pee outside at night a five gallon bucket is a great solution. Put natural wood shavings or pine cat litter in it if you are squeamish. Line it with a trash bag if you must. I would not go to the outhouse at night in a land where bears, wolves and moose are a danger. Peace is worth a bit of struggle...
Loved the video. I also entered sweepstakes. That would be such a life changer for who wins. Some more than others. I'm homeless so it would be awesome. I have been looking at tiny homes and customs vans for about 3 yrs. Would be beyond a dream come true. Good luck to all that have entered.
I live in SE Alaska and am always armed when I go out into the woods. I tell people it is for protection from animals, particularly the two legged variety. It's how women in Alaska think, because it has like the highest cases of rape in the country.
Wow Sounds like if you are going to be living in Alaska as a single woman you better know how to defend yourself!! I think it’s terrific that as a young woman she is so aware of her surroundings and knows how to protect herself, I’m sure her father wants to sure his little girl is always safe too!
The Camera work must have special lenses, because that inside looks about 3X bigger from the inside then from the outside! This is the size of a shed I saw at Home Depot, and it felt a fraction of what this one here implies. I love the shelves 🙂 and maybe it’s not pretty, but that sofa looks so oh so Comfy and perfect! I would have to have the toilet inside. Not negotiable, at all. I love how her decor is what makes her happy and brings loving happy memories to mind. She’s done well for herself. Like most others tho.... family helped and it’s family land. I have no one.
It looks cozy and comfortable, but I don’t think I could live in it. LOL 😆. Maybe there should be a small deck on the side which could be attached to the outhouse (making the outhouse closer). Then maybe it would slow down the moose traffic between the buildings...😁.
I love watching living off-grid videos but one things always come in my mind is how safe it is living in the forest where we don't know if there is any bad people or wild animals walking around your house in the middle of the night. And this video of Jodie and her tiny house answered my question well. There is no way you can sleep without having guns.
Yeah, agree. The animal AND human AND weather issues mean there's no way I'd limit myself to an outhouse at night in the winter, though. I would definitely have a cassette or composting toilet in a little cupboard for night wees--especially in winter. Obviously in the daytime I could go outside. The animal consideration is actually the most serious, to me. If you get stuck in the outhouse at night in winter because of an animal, you could freeze--it's easy to say oh I'd shoot the bear or the moose, but that doesn't always stop them as quickly as you need and a moose or a grizzly could probably just knock that outhouse over. Yeah...no. I understand the difficulties and expense with indoor plumbing but you don't need plumbing for the kind of toilets one could easily use.
I had hoped she would climb up on the bed; it seems that ladder stops at an inconvenient spot. Great use of under the bed. Everything is well organized and she has everything she needs!
She is such an inspiration, I also live just 5 miles outside of wasilla and have been wanting to build a tiny house like this for a long time. I've been looking at properties daily, and different ideas for tiny house building. She has answered so many questions and solidified for me that this is the way I want to go. What was holding me back is the long cold winters, but she's convinced me I can do it. So awesome, even seen her around town before🤣 maybe next time I'll reach out haha
I understand believe me. I do love my alone time bc it’s productive to my heart. Haven’t read a book in forever. This year alone, I’ve listened to 10 lee child’s novels. Better than tv bc u can do other things while being essentially read a story. But I need excitement too. Good luck to u love.
It sink to me that she said ... When I'm traveled in poor place and help to realize wht she likes in life 🥰. Yes it help build our self by traveling along the away we will meet good people and bad people good place bad place to teach us big lesson for ourselves to build us .
Growing up in the 90s with a family of 8, We always had the stovetop in semi outdoor area so It didnt stink and smoke out the house. No electric kettle or any food heater inside the home, yet somehow all 6 kids managed to have warm formula milk before bed everyday with hot water from the thermos. If We got hungry at night We just made some ramen outside together. As long as Dad updated the Playstations and the vcd players, We were happy.
I wanted to do this in Upstate NY but we get down to negative 53 at times. It just wouldn't work for me being disabled and sick. I need to be extra extra warm or I easily get hypothermia. My heat is at 80 or higher all winter. It's like an oven but I need it that way. If I wasn't sick I'd love to do this.
Love it! Location at lake is wonderful! She knows she's lucky to have parents near and provide land. But,inside toilet a must, outside shower for summer.
nice touch with the cassettes and overhead bed........so many RV type ( for comparison) renovations plunk the queen size bed right in the middle of the confined space......the method used here is efficient
AGREED....so if its pouring down rain you go out in the rain to the bathroom????? does it not get cold as well???? .....I never understand how people with so much land build such tiny spaces .....at least put two sheds together or build onto that one ... I don't know.... she is happy ... I'm happy for her ...
She’s on her parents property. Ya know if she’s armed they all are. So a private property way out there in Alaska with multiple adults who live there, all armed.... ummm, she good!
That is a beautiful place to live, I love birch trees and the lake. It's so green. I would only hate the mosquitoes and if it is north enough to be dark half the year, but don't mind an outhouse. Especially if the shower is just a few feet away. Lots of nice features, love that couch, the shelves & cabinets, lol the coat rack. Really nice place to live
Good for her to have family nearby and to feel safe living in family property. She is living the dream unlike many people still find a place to live with such this economics. We all try to get by each day.
awesome, i really like your home. i have been thinking of a dry tiny cabin as well. sometimes i get thinking too much and lose focus on what really matters. thank you for sharing, it makes a difference. peace
Lovely home and property. I could live there easily. Wow. Who knew a shed could be such comfort. Great design ideas. Perfect. I dont mind an outhouse either. The view is great if the lake with the little deck. An idea for cooktop is take out those burners and get an induction unit. Portable one burner or two. You'll love it.
Whoa, cassette collection. I still have an old Panasonic boombox that plays cassettes and still have a few to listen too. Maxell tapes! I have a buddy from high school in northern California who moved up to Portland Oregon in the late 70's and set himself up in an old chicken coup where he slept and lived. I wonder if he was one of the early pioneers of the tiny home movement?! It is much more sophisticated now a days.
For me Id sacrifice the closet space for bathroom (shower/toilet). If money was available I'd done a futon/sofa bed...but I love the design and how cozy this looks.
Congratulations. U have skills to live like that. I had learned a little bi more about that way of living. Mostly, first tine for m I saw that small stove kitchen. That really surprised me.
Glad she's happy there. Living alone as a woman on her parents property isn't quite a solo woman experience. Moose in between her and the bathroom in the winter! What was the point of disconnecting it? Not a good option for the area and the weather imo..

Her parent's backyard with a shed that was already there. That does save a lot of money.
I wonder about the cost of land there.
Love it! Location at lake is wonderful! She knows she's lucky to have parents near and provide land. But,inside toilet a must, outside shower for summer.
Mosquitoes?
Stunning! One of the best tiny houses I have seen!
nice touch with the cassettes and overhead bed........so many RV type ( for comparison) renovations plunk the queen size bed right in the middle of the confined space......the method used here is efficient
Great little cabin! What a nice view of the lake too!
How I wish I could live there to .what a view !!
GorGeous 😀
LoVe your gentLy used couch (and of course tape cassette'S) 👌
Beth Masters couch is Devine !
I would not tell anyone that I was living alone and I would have to have the bathroom in my house
100% Agree
AGREED....so if its pouring down rain you go out in the rain to the bathroom????? does it not get cold as well???? .....I never understand how people with so much land build such tiny spaces .....at least put two sheds together or build onto that one ...
I don't know....
she is happy ... I'm happy for her ...
She’s on her parents property. Ya know if she’s armed they all are. So a private property way out there in Alaska with multiple adults who live there, all armed.... ummm, she good!
I have shed at home
And see this give me many idea on Build
My shed house this is amazing work honestly ⚔🛡
I’m glad u have a comfortable couch not the kind with the 90 degree back they usually put in.
The sofa is great, the best reading place!
Great job on your house Jodi and what a blessing to have those memories of building it with your dad!
What is the brand of oven/stove top? I have been looking for on just like that.
They always live on parents garden.Every single time.
zit is gloriously perfect and just enough. That couch looks so very cuddly!
Gorgeous. Alaska, looks so much like Sweden. I'd love to live there, with internet connection, so one can work from home
hahaha - was waiting for it, "and on the same property, here is my parent's cabin"
awesome, i really like your home. i have been thinking of a dry tiny cabin as well. sometimes i get thinking too much and lose focus on what really matters. thank you for sharing, it makes a difference.
I am glad i seen this video. I think it was well designed and the whole layout of the land.
that dog is so cute LOL
I wanted her to introduce the dog.
Awesome! Love your home. The lake and family nearby!
Its beautiful, how lucky you are🤗💫
Indoor plumbing is a must
My daughter is in Fairbanks by herself in a dry cabin too. I was amazed at how many do live in dry cabins and the rent is still really high.
For me Id sacrifice the closet space for bathroom (shower/toilet). If money was available I'd done a futon/sofa bed...but I love the design and how cozy this looks.
Gorgeous and serene location for a home of any size.
Great philosophy... great build.
Jodi, you've done a lovely job with this. My question is where were you able to find the small units of fridge and oven?
17:56 great view👍🏻 and a perfect place for a coffee
Best wishes from Germany
Wolfgang
It looks uncannily spacious inside.
Love it and good to know her parents are close by , I would have had added a bathroom onto my home though.
That's one Beautiful house! My niece lives in Alaska. I hope to go visit some day. Thanks for sharing ❣️
That’s a perfect sized house
Congratulations. U have skills to live like that.
I had learned a little bi more about that way of living.
Mostly, first tine for m I saw that small stove kitchen. That really surprised me.
Glad she's happy there. Living alone as a woman on her parents property isn't quite a solo woman experience. Moose in between her and the bathroom in the winter! What was the point of disconnecting it? Not a good option for the area and the weather imo..
Exactly she can easily say to herself oh I don't feel like this right now. Im coming over mom and dad.
I wonder with the winds in the winter does it NOT affect your tiny house.
Oh my gosh, when that guy jumped in really loud at the 5 minute mark, I almost peed my pants!
Very loud 📢📢📢
Love your video, and really admire you. You should be so proud of what you’ve accomplished in your life so far! 👍🙌
What do you do for work? If you don't mind me asking.
