The 4080 to 4090 price comparison is an Nvidia strategy to distract average consumers from the actual 72% price increase from the 3080 to 4080. Founders $700 USD to $1200 USD is a huge jump. Makes the 6800 XT at $550 and 3080 (at $650 USD great buys at the currently discounted prices).
Fantastic comprehensive comparative review of the Asus ROG Strix 4080 and the TUF Gaming 4080 and the Nvidia RTX 4080 FE. The market pricing along with the diminished performance in comparison to the RTX 4090 FE and AIB cards make the 4090 the better purchase proposition. The performance delta that the 4090 FE has over the 4080 FE and AIB cards should in theory allow any perspective owner to skip at least one upgrade cycle with the card without experiencing an appreciable performance deficit.
Coil whine is usually very specific to a situation, so even a different PSU can make a difference. It's also more common in badly programmed loading screens (where a card can suddenly put out 1500+ FPS). But I didn't notice any so far.
High FPS is causing louder coil whine buzzing cause of the higher frequency load on the power circuit. Just bought the 4080 TUF OC that was on-sale this weekend for $1100 flat. So bought that card instead of the 4080 strix which was still at the $1580 - $1650 range. I think that was a steal. Plan to build next week. Anyone with the TUF OC Card can provide me some feedback on how they like it?
@@sinaraini8473 None on her sample, I just bought earlier this year my RTX 4080 ROG Strix Gaming OC to replace a dying RTX 3060 and I have no coil whine :-)
Cool so there is basically no reason to buy the more expensive AIB versions. Glad I went with the FE. I can OC it to 3GHz anyway for that extra 4 frames that I'm definitely going to notice.
Again, Nvidia controls how these cards perform. They will perform similarly. With the ROG strix, you're just paying for the looks, maybe a bit of temps/sound but even the base model runs cool and silent. In my opinion there's too many unnecessary stuff they put there so they can justify the price increase. Also I think the 4080s don't need a very large heatsink.
Judging from the comments on the 4090 videos, a lot of people just really like the Strix and want to pay for it as well. But I agree for a lower tier card a cheaper version just makes more sense.

the ROG version is a joke, it's literally the price of a normal 4090. Who the hell would pay that much for a 4080 when you literally get up to 50% more performance with the 4090. My 3080 died this week and I'm looking for a replacement, I'm def going for the tuf card.
which is better asus tuf rtx or asus rog rtx 4080?
Dude, did you even watch the video?
4080 TUF or MSI trio? :)
TUF
Just bought the 4080 TUF OC that was on-sale this weekend for $1100 flat. So bought that card instead of the 4080 strix which was still at the $1580 - $1650 range. I think that was a steal. Plan to build next week. Anyone with the TUF OC Card can provide me some feedback on how they like it?
Am doing the exact same thing. Would you mind letting me know how it yields?
I plan to buy one, hope to hear about the card.
Herd coil whine is a big thing, maybe some people just unlucky?
Another great review! thank you! Just got a 3080 for $500. Not upgrading anytime soon. The gains for the stuff are due aren't worth it.
That's a nice deal, enjoy the 3080 :D
i wonder where did you get that card
Thank you for the 4K gaming summary, so helpful the way you presented it!! Please add Halo Infinite to your testing suite - thanks
Buy the Strix for overclocking potential. You'll get more out of it.
A 4090 no matter what tier will smash any 4080 in performance!
Expected overclocking since the strix has a much higher power limit.
Any coil whine?
Der8aeur had a coil whine review of 4080
@@sudeshryan8707 right, so did guru3d but I'd like to know from multiple reviewers
@@sinaraini8473 None on her sample, I just bought earlier this year my RTX 4080 ROG Strix Gaming OC to replace a dying RTX 3060 and I have no coil whine :-)
Best content ever! I have some wiggle room for changing my entire system. I want the 4090 but I’m curious to see what AMD has in store
Thanks! Im curious too but I wouldn’t expect them to get in 4090 territory.
@@TechTesters As am I. I just grabbed my first build since 2006 so disappointment is probably not in the deck of cards no matter what…lol
Cool so there is basically no reason to buy the more expensive AIB versions. Glad I went with the FE. I can OC it to 3GHz anyway for that extra 4 frames that I'm definitely going to notice.
its very weird but microcenter took down the landing page for the 4089 why would that be?
They're supposed to go on sale today, so 24 hours after the reviews. Maybe that's why :)
doesnt matter they still have plenty of stock. Go Get one.
@@halrichard1969 i got one launch at 9am asus tuf non oc
Anybody noticing the coil whine!??
Again, Nvidia controls how these cards perform. They will perform similarly. With the ROG strix, you're just paying for the looks, maybe a bit of temps/sound but even the base model runs cool and silent. In my opinion there's too many unnecessary stuff they put there so they can justify the price increase. Also I think the 4080s don't need a very large heatsink.
right. and cant even overclock really :/
Judging from the comments on the 4090 videos, a lot of people just really like the Strix and want to pay for it as well. But I agree for a lower tier card a cheaper version just makes more sense.
@@TechTesters yeah /; i have a 3070ti strix rn, but strix on the new cards seams like a waste of cash
@@TechTesters yeah it looks great, I like the design too. but buying an ROG strix 4080 is not practical especially if it's priced very near an RTX 4090. Better get the 4090 instead. In the first place the 4080 is overpriced considering its predecessor started at $699.
In some benchmarks, last gen AMD GPU isn't that much worse than 4080 in non-RT games, not to mention value (price). Hopefully they'll deliver on RDNA3 as advertised. Don't forget to test it with PG27AQN (G-Sync ON) just to make sure these two can be paired without drawbacks.
Cyberpunk 2077:
7900xtx gets 21fps
4080 gets 100fps+
Both 4k, Ultra, Ultra RT. 4080 using DLSS3.
@@bryzeer5075 where did you see 7900XTX benchmarks?
@@bryzeer5075 Assuming for a moment that your numbers aren't taken from thin air / prediction: 7900XTX is "up to +50% performance" in non RT + didn't mention upscaling from FSR + assuming DLSS 3 includes frame generation = apples to oranges.
I don't care about RT, and for now neither about fake frames from DLSS 3. Sure, DLSS seems better than FSR as of now, NVENC is also useful and some may need Cuda cores, but none of this is worth paying that much more.
@@bryzeer5075 So they specifically reference non-RT gaming, and you *still* spout performance numbers with RT on 🤨And with DLSS 3.0 too, which many will be keeping off
@@bryzeer5075 All I know is Nvidia will not get a fucking dime from me this time. Cheers.
What about the coil whine? The Strix has horrible coil whine, but you did not mention it. How about the TUF card?
Coil whine is sample and even setup specific. Just because someone else had it doesn’t it affects mine. Coil whine would also show as a much higher noise level :)
I totally agree Robert, My Tuf 4080 whines really bad, but is performing pretty much as reviewed here. I find it really disappointing that these reviewers won't even mention whine. I was surprised that both my 3070ti and tuf 4080oc whine about the same. (and here I am doing the same thing).....
@@CamanoJohn
Did you rma the card ? Mine 4080 tuf whines like a bee.
As much as I would love to go amd gpu but with vr sim racing I will not make the mistake twice. Like anything want good stuff you pay for it. 4090 on order for me yes more money but less drama overall all with a beast of performance that no amd card can match other then price. This has been this way since 2010. Great review tho
My BF just leaned the 50 series prices to me. 5090 - 2499 5080- 1799. No joke
shouldn't thumbnail image be "ROG vs TUF"?
Only thing that puts me off the tuf 4080 is the slightly louder noise level
What about coilwhine?
Mine were fine. But coil whine is usually sample specific
Well done!!!
Thanks
Welcome :)
I have a Tuf 6800XT, which weight 1.7Kg. I think it's ridiculously heavy for a graphics card. Only this new gen Strix 4080 is 2.3Kg. Oh bad.
It really need the vertical mount now at that weight 🫢
just like my lenovo legion gaming laptop huh
There has been report’s of coil wine on the strix, did you notice any?
None on her sample.
A card that costs 50$ less than 4090 has insanely awful coil whine check Derbauerd video. Pricing of Strix is clearly out of mind this time.
This better than 3090ti or?
Yes.
20% faster than 3090ti on average in 4K, with 3070 level of power consumption on gaming load, very efficient unlike 4090
and in Europe they sell these for around $1900
The most pointless 4080 in existence is the Strix. Might as well go 4090 for that price.
That'll depend on the actual price of course, but it's definitely a risk.
