I can kind of relate to that. I have rid myself of the marijuana scene and I have never felt better about myself. I do like to sit down and drink with some of my closer friends from time to time. I am not ready to rid myself of that self destructive behavior yet. I do feel it is all very wrong to do to yourself. I am absolutely against weed, and I have my own philosophical reasons for being just that, but I've learned not condemn people for it anymore. Not all of us think the same.
@bbgunsshootbbs - you have a point, but it was cool to see Thomas answer the question so honestly. I'm glad he said that he can't play it even a little buzzed. That just cements the fact that he's a beast. I can't believe that he doesn't even use a click track live. The whole band is a band of giants!
I noticed that too! It sounds like he could have spent most of his younger life in North America and then moved back to Sweden, very "pro" sounding! If you look up interviews with Marten Hagstrom, it's the same thing. His English is also formidable and clean. These guys are really eloquent.
He's indeed has very good english, I was really amazed when I saw the lyrics for some of their songs cause the english is really complex for a Swedish band although we put alot of weight into english in Sweden;)
I was all the way in the back, drinking a few beers, and listening to my friend complain about how it was too overpacked lol. AMAZING show I might add.
it seems like the more extreme and crazy the band is, the more levelheaded and cool then band members are? See BTBAM, Opeth, Dillinger Escape Plan, etc
He owns every drummer when it comes to double-pedal & precision, just look at the live dvd... Oh yeah and Bleed for me is the official chuck norris song!
has anyone heard the hype about this band from the US called "seven"? sound a hell of a lot like meshuggah, but with cleaner vocals and electronics. awesome band. there's a video on my page, but its of a slower song. still cool tho. theres also a seven link in the description. you can google "seven cymatics" to download the album..its leaked EVERYWHERE.
Used to quite like that interviewer guy, but making out people crying out Meshuggah like it's a negative thing has really irritated me. The whole point to me is, it's sane madness and it makes you want to scream. I saw Meshuggah live for the first time recently, been a fan for years, and I felt like I was losing my mind it was so good. It was completely overwhelming. Happy to learn he's an ale man.
"....you can only write MESHUGGAH in caps and like seven h's and alot of exlamation points now" LOL thats kind of true =) I find myself doing that all the time . The excitement over their fat fucking metal brings that same battle cry out of keyboards allover the world. MESHUGGAHHHHH!!!!!! !!!!
i thought he's pretty funny, thats why i dig metal injection. All my mates assume that cuz all the bands i listen to are all dark, wierd psychopaths cuz of the music they play but really the metal community has alot more sense of humour than most other music scenes
Dang! Im not a huge Meshuggah listener, but this dude seems really friendly for being in such an aggressive death metal band. does all Meshuggah music have primarily low guitar and repeated rythms?
man, who cares? Rob is the most the most dynamic interviewer for any of these low budget internet metal shows I've seen...he is one of the only people constantly generating interviews for people like you, only to be berated on how he engages each band member inside and outside the entertainment environment. The part you pointed out only accounts for just a fraction of what he covers. Who cares if he asks questions about weed? Since when do metal heads give a fuck about that?
He didn't say they were. You don't have to be a doom band to have doom. You don't have to be a Djent band to have the djent tone/technique (which did pretty much spawn from Meshuggah influenced bands anyways)
I think you misinterpreted. I meant from what I understand, the whole band speaks good English, its just happens that Tomas and Marten speak in English more frequently than the others. Not stating it as a fact or anything, just something I read somewhere...can't think of where. Bow down to them regardless of what language
I like that music reviewers usually have no musical background so that they can review a CD from a "Normal Listeners" standpoint, but music interviewers should have some sort of musical knowledge to communicate with an artist. Add a 0 to the end of the time signature????
yes, that is true for most swedes. but my friends fro sweden still have a heavy accent, even their parents do. Tomas sounds better than even NHLers like Nik Lidstrom or Mats Sundin.
yeah. The later into their discography the harder it is to get into. However, the more rewarding it is IMO. Rhythm is their specialty, but that's not to say Frederik dones't have amazing phrasing and soloing/improv skills. One more thing, Meshuggah sin't death metal ;)
Seems like the most chill dude ever, probably a good smoking buddy
even though Tomas is old enough to be my dad, I'd love to sit down with him, smoke a joint together and just talk about weird shit.
+Jesse Sanders lmao
Amen to that brother
I have a vinyl copy of Obzen so it's quite a large picture of the album art and I still never noticed the arc of sixes until now.
So down to earth.
Best of luck to him
Thomas is the coolest person. He's so chill, and you can tell that he's just so good just by listening to him talk. And he's so humble
Ire Works!!!
This made my day
Indeed, goes to show you his (and the bands) level of professionalism.
I like Thomas as a drummer and a person. He seems very down to earth He doesn't try to FIT IN to his genre of music like some other bands do.
Tomas Haake = a god amongst insects, men, dogs, cats, oddballs, and amazing musicians. Saw them last Friday, goddamn they were amazing.
have meshuggah been living in america for the past 10 years ,,, because they all speak extremely good english ,, even their accents are excellent
Some important questions answered!
Thanks!
Yes I did. They're worth mentioning too.
How many drummers are so awesome that they would have to practice to play their own stuff? SICK!!!

If you look up interviews with Marten Hagstrom, it's the same thing. His English is also formidable and clean. These guys are really eloquent.
if you payed attention to the interview... he said it wasn't by the style of music but the intensity of the shows...
He's indeed has very good english, I was really amazed when I saw the lyrics for some of their songs cause the english is really complex for a Swedish band although we put alot of weight into english in Sweden;)
hes an awesome interviewer
And I who thought I was alone...thanks dude :)
im really impressed with his american accent, not only his drum playing
amazingly looking interviewer...
the interviewer is so awesome
he was so ready for the interview to be over
I used to be Tomas Haakes neighbour. Went there for coffee and stuff from times to times :)
I was all the way in the back, drinking a few beers, and listening to my friend complain about how it was too overpacked lol. AMAZING show I might add.
it was never meant as a negative thing, in fact its the opposite!
I agree they created this concept of Djent, what it is and what defines it. But they are much more than "Djent"
meshuggah are the ultimate
Meshuggah you have to come back to Melbourne Australia !!!!!!
Yes I did see them at the recher.
it seems like the more extreme and crazy the band is, the more levelheaded and cool then band members are?
See BTBAM, Opeth, Dillinger Escape Plan, etc
Kinda fun. Saw them at roskilde a while ago and yelled "fuck my foot" until Kidman yelled "come back-stage and ill fuck your god damn foot!"
From what I understand, the whole band speaks english its just that Tomas and Marten are the talkers of the group so to say.
"Sometimes the drum part will be really difficult to play."
Really, Thomas? You think those are difficult? Jesus.
most brutal fucking band, nicest sounding fucking guy
METAL
He owns every drummer when it comes to double-pedal & precision, just look at the live dvd...
Oh yeah and Bleed for me is the official chuck norris song!
Wow, very articulate english. I wasn't expecting that.
has anyone heard the hype about this band from the US called "seven"? sound a hell of a lot like meshuggah, but with cleaner vocals and electronics. awesome band. there's a video on my page, but its of a slower song. still cool tho. theres also a seven link in the description. you can google "seven cymatics" to download the album..its leaked EVERYWHERE.
Hakke is a smart dude. I'd like to meet him.
dude,,,,owns \m/
Kidman is by far one of the best metal singers.
this guy is a god...
MESHUGGAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
@jerradcwilliams yea, i can't believe it, he has the slightest Swedish accent, and i don't notice it most of the time
"all the drum tracks are kind of complex" haha thats a bit of an understatement
Used to quite like that interviewer guy, but making out people crying out Meshuggah like it's a negative thing has really irritated me. The whole point to me is, it's sane madness and it makes you want to scream. I saw Meshuggah live for the first time recently, been a fan for years, and I felt like I was losing my mind it was so good. It was completely overwhelming.
Happy to learn he's an ale man.
0_0 That ending scared the fuck out of me.
Yeah.
" I never do it before the show "
that should have shut the guy down....
long live Meshuggah
"....you can only write MESHUGGAH in caps and like seven h's and alot of exlamation points now"
LOL thats kind of true =)
I find myself doing that all the time .
The excitement over their fat fucking metal brings that same battle cry out of keyboards allover the world.
MESHUGGAHHHHH!!!!!! !!!!
Acctually you are. :)
-Stashitquick Fair enough...i didn't quite get what you meant before. I completely agree...they are much more.
MESHHHHUGGAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, this guys english is incredible.
MESHUGGAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i thought he's pretty funny, thats why i dig metal injection. All my mates assume that cuz all the bands i listen to are all dark, wierd psychopaths cuz of the music they play but really the metal community has alot more sense of humour than most other music scenes
2 people tried to play bleed thinking tomas only uses one bass pedal.
Dang! Im not a huge Meshuggah listener, but this dude seems really friendly for being in such an aggressive death metal band. does all Meshuggah music have primarily low guitar and repeated rythms?
@shotgunjoe agreed, sometimes simplicity can be heavy as shit
you'd think that after everyone saying they hate the interviewer they'd get rid of him
"Add another 0 up there",,,,
This interviewer has no clue what time signatures are...
MESHUGGAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Yeah man Obzen really had great artwork, actual 'art'-work ye know.
Avant-Garde Metal or Experimental Metal (both basically mean the same thing, but they go by Avant-Garde Metal). Rock on brotha \m/
i think he meant, big as in, slayer, mettalica, you know names like that
The dillinger escape plan - Ire works
I speak for Tomas when I say this:
"Hoppas nyhetsankaret avlider av en drogöverdos."
yeah:D i know. sounds good!:P
man, who cares? Rob is the most the most dynamic interviewer for any of these low budget internet metal shows I've seen...he is one of the only people constantly generating interviews for people like you, only to be berated on how he engages each band member inside and outside the entertainment environment. Nathan Explosion: "WE NEVER DRINK BEFORE A SHOW. NEVER!"
He didn't say they were.
You don't have to be a doom band to have doom.
You don't have to be a Djent band to have the djent tone/technique (which did pretty much spawn from Meshuggah influenced bands anyways)
@makinrow He's pprobably been speaking it since he was a child. Probably fluently then too.
Quite Well
MESHUGGAH
I think you misinterpreted.
I meant from what I understand, the whole band speaks good English, its just happens that Tomas and Marten speak in English more frequently than the others.
Not stating it as a fact or anything, just something I read somewhere...can't think of where.
Bow down to them regardless of what language
@SuperScree
In innovation, i think they're equal to slayer. Nothing else
He's a damn robot!!!
Favorite band, great interview! Tomas Haake is a really cool guy / old man (jk) :D
Amazing drummer..lyricist and musician meets Primitive and childish interviewer ... well done Tomas
I like that music reviewers usually have no musical background so that they can review a CD from a "Normal Listeners" standpoint, but music interviewers should have some sort of musical knowledge to communicate with an artist.
Add a 0 to the end of the time signature????
-Stashitquick Meshuggah literally created djent, buddy. The word was invented by them and they brought the style to the forefront.
man, he talks without his swedish accent. cool!
perhaps you misunderstood. I mean I go to Non-Meshuggah shows and people are yelling Meshuggah!!!!
seems like a serious/grumpy dude
yes, that is true for most swedes. but my friends fro sweden still have a heavy accent, even their parents do. Tomas sounds better than even NHLers like Nik Lidstrom or Mats Sundin.
This is making me want to play guitar bad, I'm gonna go rip on my 8 string for a couple hours : )
I know where it comes from, it means crazy.
yeah. The later into their discography the harder it is to get into. However, the more rewarding it is IMO. Rhythm is their specialty, but that's not to say Frederik dones't have amazing phrasing and soloing/improv skills.
One more thing, Meshuggah sin't death metal ;)
Elvis Priesley with his microphone :D
[interviewer makes joke]
...
[haake does not compute]
He's got really good English
i suppose years of touring have done their job))
@joet193 I started to understand actually, my bad haha. What is the song, that the band plays in this video?
i agree. i don't know how haake could finish the interview without laughing. he looked like a diplodocus.
Does anyone else think that the interviewer looks like the crazy guy from The Goonies??
3:25 he mentions developing beats being difficult to play and so changing them.
If he can't play them then they must be impossible!
he speaks english pretty damn well
I smoke ROCKS
