Gotta love Murray's grunt when he chases a drop shot though. Or a shot that he knows is really gonna stretch him. It's always funny to hear that sound of desperation.
He grunts in phases: phase 1 realizing it’s going to be a stretch a short grunt to announce the challenge, phase 2 grunts when hitting the ball, phase 3 relaxing grunt (similar to exhaling) to self-congratulate on returning the ball successfully. Listen carefully to Murray…. every shot is a 3-phase grunt.
Murray's grunt is nowhere near annoying. In terms of volume or the duration. I also find it funny that Murray's grunt when he chases a drop shot is so similar to Andre Agassi's - it might have to do with the fact that Agassi was Murray's role-model when he was growing up.
As a fellow tennis grunt analyst myself, I confirm this, it's so funny hearing Murray run for a drop shot. Also among the funniest grunts is Thiem after serve, a full blown orgasmic release
It's the delayed grunters that are the worst, like Sonego. They are making a loud noise when their opponent is hitting the ball, which shouldn't be allowed in my opinion. I once had tp grunt during a practice session with my coach. She told me to grunt (like Wickmayer) to at least get used to exhaling while hitting. I've rarely done it during a match. I once did it during a practice match, when it was very hot outside and I was really exhausted (it was more of an Aga Radwanska loud exhale). But i gotta say that it does help a bit. It helps me to focus and actually release some of the tension during those points. So grunting does help for me, but there is a difference between an exhale or a short grunt and a loud long grunt such as the ones in the video.
Why people feel the need to scream while hitting or in some cases a full 1-2 seconds after the ball has left their racquet is beyond me. Delayed grunting should be banned and there should be warnings for excessively loud grunting up to the chair umpire’s discretion.
The only time I’ve ever unintentionally grunted was with serving & it lasts a split second. Grunts lasting seconds are intentional & there should be a limit to them!😪

Grunting should be banned from tennis. You get a warning every time you're clearly trying to put off the opponent. It's pretty easy to tell where to draw the line.
@@ebstmnt Just from my side, if I stop grunting, I’m either not focused, or I’ve stopped trying. I can’t really consciously stop myself or my play gets bad because I’m focused on not grunting instead of actually playing the point. I’m sure you sharply exhale before and at the point of contact (which is good technique btw), but some of us aren’t (or weren’t while growing up) very concerned with whether or not our vocal cords vibrate in the process. It does get excessive at times or with some players, but I’m not doing it on purpose. I don’t even think about it during play.
@@cemeterybowling6 I'm sorry but that is just excusing something that is entirely unnecessary. No one ever used to do it, it is a recent fad, and it is a learned behaviour. Plenty of players don't do it. Watching Martinez yelling as he executes a soft drop shot is just ridiculous. He should be given warnings and then forfeit the match for that kind of thing. It is starting to get out of hand as new players copy the pros.
Grunting is actually a technique plenty of players learn in their early days so that their trainer can check on their breathing and respiratory technique and help improve their power distribution and movement towards the ball. As they grow up from early ages with this "technique" it becomes so second nature to them to a degree where they do it without really thinking about it. It is like the V form in ski jumping. Once familiarized with this technique you probably can't undo it. And TBH, if you're in the middle of a ball exchange you're usually focused on the ball itself and thus do not pay extensive attention towards other things like grunting or the crowd "oh"ing-up. By that argument there couldn't be any USOpen which is considered to be the loudest tournament of them all with planes flying over, parties going on left and right and so forth. Even the yells from other courts can be heard there. But granted, some players also use it as a tool to distract the opponent or even mock them to some degree. To some degree it is a mind-game. If you manage to get into the head of your opponent you have an advantage. This is usually how Nadal is able to make turnarounds. He goes to a short pee-break and then manages usually to get into his opponents head and dominate him. But If a grunter and a non grunter faces each other and the non-grunter then suddenly starts to grunt, at first it sounds strange and more like a mock of the other, but I'd then call it even rules for both of them. Especially in the clip shown here at least to me it didn't sound like a real mock here and as such I would have let him continue. I therefore can understand his frustration and remarks. I even know plenty of non-tennis player who start to make strange noises when they suddenly have to lift something heavy or complicated to carry and what not. So I consider that more of a natural reaction of the body towards heavy work. Of course, not all humans react the same. It's like some men snore while others don't. While there can be physical reason for that, like obesity, that is just one of the factors that usually go hand in hand with it, but definitely not the only one. Maybe all grunters also snore at night. I don't know. I'm neither snoring nor grunting :D

Spanish players must train at rafas academy where they train in grunts and maybe taking their time to serve. I agree Rafa has to be the loudest in the men’s
I think a grunt is fine, it helps get power and release breathe but the delayed ones are insane. Any delayed grunt should be recognized as hindrance. What comes to mind is the novak grunt that was delayed and called hindrance, these guys do it every point. TLDR: A grunts fine, it can help, a delayed grunt is when its unfair.
If you make noise after the ball has cleared the net, it's hindrance. Easy as that. Also, Murray is the only guy to grunt before he hits the ball. What a chad.
This was a much needed video. I love Carlos, but his grunts are too much. Sonego as well. and then there are many Spanish speaking players in general who grunt... Yes Zapata..fuck That Sousa finals match....... Sousa was still verbal after the other player made contact with the ball.. Jesus christ.

The worst grunt is Francesca Schiavone, both ATP and WTA combined
Nah, Sabalenka, Azarenka and Sharapova are the worst top 3 grunters of all time, period.
Nadal's grunt is iconic and awesome.
9:50 his grunt was even louder than line judge’s call.
I had to explain to my housemate I wasn’t watching gay porn whilst watching this video
Felix's grunt isn't the loudest but it does sound like he is being sick.
Bro the martinez one 😭😭
Tennis is so funny, the crowd has to be quiet while the players play the point but the players can make as much ridiculous noise as they want. Tennis is the only sport where you have players making noise like this. Ban grunting if you want tennis to grow because nobody likes it.
My favourite grunter is definitely Gustavo Kuerten. I could listen to an audio recording of those sweet sounds while I go to sleep!
Nadal has the best grunt in Tennis. Same for Alcaraz. Hearing those grunts as a forehand bombs past the opponent’s is brilliant.
Felix's grunt is actually not that bad
It's bestial
He sounds like Weezing
Nice video. You deserve way more subscribers!
Calling Sonego to the net because of grunting by Nadal is pure hypocrisy.
As his entire career with "permitted" steroids.
That Hasse clip is gold 😂😂😂
1:14 that made me laugh
I love this film. When I hear some of the funniest grunts in tennis and then you say something very formal i just laugh so much
Spanish players must train at rafas academy where they train in grunts and maybe taking their time to serve.
We have millimeter camera precision but nothing to solve this problem, seriously?
If you make noise after the ball has cleared the net, it's hindrance. Easy as that.
Also, Murray is the only guy to grunt before he hits the ball. What a chad.
medvedev deserves an honorable mention
I miss the early 2000 Andy Murray. He is my absolute favourite. He never grunts & he just look so cool. But time changes right...
That last player on this list was grunting hitting drop shots, pathetic!!!
I’m quite surprised none of y’all mentioned Nadal as the worst grunted. Y’all seem to have gotten used to it.
Tbh sonego’s is the worst, and it looks like he does it intentionally to disturb opponent
This was a much needed video. I love Carlos, but his grunts are too much. Sonego as well. and then there are many Spanish speaking players in general who grunt... Yes Zapata..fuck
That Sousa finals match....... Sousa was still verbal after the other player made contact with the ball.. Jesus christ.
There's a match between Zapata Miralles and Alcaraz from a few years back (HL are on YT) and it has some of the most ridiculous grunting I've ever seen. ZM is screaming almost like a crazy person during some points. Shouldn't really be allowed.
Grunting is psychological warfare! There is no way you need to grunt for every stroke, only in times of extra assertion.
When I heard the grunt from Auger-Aliassime first time I was wheezing and laughing my arse off for whole 5 minutes. If i would be as a spectator in the stadium live I would literally die of laughter lol.
FAA's grunt is so irritating - that low "ughh ". Needs to stop.
01:05 this is actually Lama's grunting not Haase, he is serving this game
Murray’s “ha ha ha” chasing a ball is the one that annoy me more. Another one is Zverev that he is not in the video
Sabalenka. Next question?
Sorry but, where is Zverev ? xD
If you are a tennis player - I'm sorry but i couldn't give a f because tennis is DEAD to me - because of granters.
The noise Kyrgios makes whenever he gets dropshotted and has to run for it is hilarious, aside from Nadal maybe most distinctive grunt in tennis for me. Murray does the same true but I think Kygs is funnier.
Imagine that a carpenter grunted each time his hammer hit the nail. That is how incredibly stupid grunting tennis players are. I can't stand them!!!
Also, I'm unable to understand why so many former tennis stars are silent about this problem that is destroying the sport.
Navratilova has talked about it, and I like her even more for that reason.
9:44 My favorite one: "Ayeeee!" 😆
The last couple months, Sonego's grunt isn't as bad as it used to be. Seems like he worked on it.
Zapata Miralles is just annoying. The dude has a negative attitude all the time and has inconsistent grunts. Sonego is bad but his grunts are mainly just delayed. Zapata Miralles is just disgusting
Where is Marcel Granollers? Truly awful grunt!!
Diez, Etcheverry, Coria
The problem with Thiem's grunt is that it sounds so distractingly sexual I have mixed feelings about that
Especially after serve
His neighbor actually called the police on him because they thought thiem was having sex in public 💀
Even Djokovic grunts too, and it's horrendous. Specially when defending. Weird that he's not featured.
2017 AO vs Hyeon Cheng was his worst grunting performance
There is Rublev's grunt and screams when he's losing his mind 😅
I wonder how those players sound when having a huge dump at the toilet
On the men’s side I gotta go with Zapata Miralles LOL and on the women’s side the 2 time Australian Open Champion Aryna Sabalenka. It’s borderline hinderance. I enjoy watching them as players but could definitely do without their screeching nails on chalk board grunts.
Perhaps the non spaniards should grunt a little more to win tournaments. Australians to win AO, british to win Wimbledon, americans to win USOpen or french players to win RG.
Fognini mocked someone once too and said “even Azarenka doesn’t make such noises”. I forget which player, but I think he was Georgian. 🇬🇪
Basilashvili?
@@miguelalmeida8751 It was Teymuraz Gabashvili. I've never heard basilashvili grunt
wait why wasn’t zverev on here? his grunt is pretty wild
9:33 grunting on a drop shot is some next level bs
Nadal and Alcaraz are the worst Grunter. It should be forbidden!! And don't let it be said that it helps to give more strength, otherwise Roger Federer would be a loser!
Ok couple of things. Rafa's isn't bad at all. Martinez super annoying. But you're missing the worst of them all , Zverev.
Alcaraz's is bad because it sounds like the ball is being called out
