"Retrospect" in 2013 was the 10th anniversary of Epica, hence the live orchestra + live choir, it was really a special concert.
The concert lasted for 3 hours and Simone was 3 months pregnant at the time. She pulled off the performance beautifully though.
I hope you're going to react to much more from this concert. It's incredible!

The gentleman giving Floor the shout-out at the end is Mark Jansen (no relation, it's a common Dutch surname) who was Floor's bandmate in her first band After Forever. He went on to start the band that would become Epica (name taken from a Kamelot album) together with Simone, his then-girlfriend. They're no longer together romantically, and Simone is now married to Oliver Palotai, the keyboardist of... Kamelot! Simone has done some guest work with Kamelot, most notably The Haunting (Somewhere in Time) from the album The Black Halo. for the broadcasts of Best singers 2019 hardly anyone knew Floor Jansen while she is the best-selling artist in the Netherlands! .

Agreed! I feel Metal in general has always been given the cold shoulder here. It's just not played anywhere, and even when it was in the Nu-Metal era it was basically played but also mocked by many DJ's, it still is treated like something alien today. It's frustrating, cause we have a lot of very talented artists basically not get the recognition they deserve, unless they appear on the radar in another way, such as Floor with Beste Zangers.
At the end of the year one of the main radio stations in the Netherlands airs the Top 2000 of (supposedly) best songs ever, according to the Dutch people (or at least the listeners to that radio station). You would expect some representation of these awesome bands you are reacting to now in that list, but no. No Epica and only two songs by Nightwish made the list (Ghost Love Score, probably with a lot of help by the Dutch Chapter of the Army, and: Elan, you know, the song that you liked but not loved, probably because it is short and mainstream enough for radio). Dutch radio is much like American radio, I suppose.
I don't think Nighwish with Floor is the best selling artist in the Netherlands, there are many acts local an abroad who sell much more than Nightwish in the Netherlands, but Floor is one the best selling dutch artist worldwide.
i love this song! The Netherlands is just known for their amazing bands in this genre. You should check out Within Temptation feat. Anneke Van Giersbergen - Somewhere (Live) HD also 2 dutch singers in this genre!!

Simone is also Dutch. A high percentage of symphonic metal lead singers are from The Netherlands. I'm guessing about 80% are Dutch. I don't know what The Netherlands are doing but they are doing it right to turn out so many great sopranos.

Simone and Floor did one more duet in this Retrospect concert "Stabat mater Dolorosa" with orchestra and without the Epica metal band. The metal crowd was completely quiet.
After listening to this song, Stabat Mater Dolorosa from them has to be followed, otherwise your view is not complete. Dutch Ginger Metal Queen Simone Simons and 6ft Valkyrie Goddess of Metal Floor Jansen are part of the best female singers in the world at the moment and then together. Epica is more growling. It is the Beauty & the Beast idea a lot of Symphonic Metal Bands are following. Only Nightwish is always doing Nightwish things ;D. For Epica take a look at "Design your Universe" live (Retrospect) - same tour. For me it is the most epic song of them! And if you like, take a look at Within Temptation! Check out "Mother Earth" (take: Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra - Mother Earth / Black Symphony HD 1080p). Sharon is the 3rd fantastic female vocalist in Symphonic Metal. Then you have all of them - Floor, Simone and Sharon ;D - and don't forget Marko with "High Hopes" or "The Islander" or "Kiss while your lips are still red". Markogasms... 4 sure!!!!

Mark Jansen, Simone Simons, and Floor Jansen were old friends. Mark and Floor belonged to the same band, After forever; Simone was her girlfriend. When Mark left the band, he and Simone created Epica. That is their brief story.

That's a myth about Floor coaching Simone. Neither woman has ever stated this, even though they have spoken to interviewers extensively about their musical training. Also, they were never roommates. Floor does credit Simone with helping her develop her onscreen look, though.
I think people like to create this narrative of "Floor helping out her little friend Simone," when the truth is that the power dynamic goes the other way. Epica achieved a level of success far beyond either of Floor's bands, After Forever and ReVamp. In fact, about 6 months before this concert, Floor had to take a job in a lingerie store to pay the bills, and was considering giving up on music altogether. It was only with Nightwish, who were already one of the most successful European bands BEFORE they hired Floor, that she achieved big time success. Floor had been a working musician for 14 years at that point. Meanwhile, Epica was headlining their first world tour in 2007, only 5 years after Simone started singing with them at the age of 17.
If you want to know more about these women, I recommend the documentary "Soaring Highs and Brutal Lows: The Voices of Women in Metal." They interview Floor, Simone, Anneke van Wiesenberg, Alyssa White-Gluz, and a bunch of other female metal singers. I watched it on Amazon Prime, but it’s on a bunch of other streaming services as well.
Tom, I discovered these new music genres (Floor/Simone) across the ocean a little bit before you did back in October of 2020. I am still shaking my head as to what I did my entire life listening to music here in America. I have bought a serious high end speaker system to really appreciate these new genres. Again, shaking my head to what level of music these two "Queens" can produce... A good example is Floor's covers on her channel.
Another duet is Within Temptation ft Anneke van Giersbergen with Somewhere ( greatest duet ever) Live. The Dutch symphonic metal scene is one big rabbit hole.

Tom, I knew you'd get to it eventually 🤣. I seen this morning you finally got to it. I did'nt have time to comment. When I sent you the link 2 or 3 weeks ago. I knew it would blow your socks off. Trans-Siberian Orchestra broke up. I found Nightwish and Epica and a lot more bands listening to the bumper music to the Todd Starnes show. I caught a band with an orchestra behind it so I went to UA-cam to see if I could find it. I didn't find it. Instead I found that the genre has been around for awhile. Symphonic metal has its roots I think to Dream Theater. It was 1990 or 1991 when I heard 'Dream Theater, Pull Me Under'. As you know back then we didn't have UA-cam. Either had it on cassette or CD. For anybody reading this post I'am not explaining CDs or cassettes because that means I will have to explain 8tracks and LPS and the speed that have to run the vinyl on...no. There are alot more bands out the but, Nightwish and Epica are at the top.😎👍

@@TomTuffnuts I would like to point out that since many point to this and then point to Floor's version of Phantom saying.. well Floor can't sing legitimate opera like Tarja.
First off, The Phantom of the Opera isn't "legitimate" opera, it is musical theater which is different.
She has, Floor that is, on occasion done a bit of opera. She has legitimate classical training and operatic training. If Floor is singing something a certain way, you can bet it is intentional and not because she "can't".

It is Floor singing the aria "O mio babbino caro" from the Puccini opera.
Floor and Simone both trained under the same vocal coach (Amanda Somerville) and it really shows in this song. Their styles are very similar and blend together so well. Simone started singing symphonic metal after hearing the second Nightwish album, Oceanborn, so we owe them our gratitude yet again 😁 Congratulations Tom, you've just heard opera the way it was always meant to be done. Here's a list of American Symphonic Metal bands: Abigail Williams, Savatage, Saviour Machine, Skillet, Suspyre, Symphony X, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Vesperian Sorrow, Virgin Steele.

If you enjoyed symphonic metal with full orchestra and choir I can not recommend Within Temptation's "Black Symphony" concert enough. Check out, for example, "The Promise" from that concert.
This song is actually about a suicide bombers thoughts.. well its proberly one of the hardest song to get the meaning from without knowing it, but thats the topic here, even the song sound quite joyful, but that made me realize that the topic of song and the mood of the song, actually also got a meaning.. you figure that one out yourself ok..lol

Simone Simons (the pronunciation of the Dutch ‘i’ is like an Englishman would pronounce the ‘ee’) Simone was pregnant at that time so she couldn’t windmilling like Floor. They are long live friends and you can see that.
Epica did celebrate their 10th anniversary with a unique live concert. A 70-piece symphonic orchestra and choir will accompany the band at the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven (NLD). Especially for this show the band has invited the Hungarian Extended Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra and Choir of Miskolc National Theatre. Also, because of the great demand by international fans, Epica announced a live stream, called the Retrostream, on March 4, 2013.
The one who was shouting out Floor’s name is Mark Jansen (not related to Floor. He coincidence carries the same surename since Jansen/Janssen/Janssens is a very common name in the Netherlands). He was in the past together with her in After Forever, the band Floor did started her career.

@@cancelled_user i know this is Epica, I never said anything about this being part of that trinity. Pretty sure I mentioned Ghost Love Score as being the third in that set. As it is very much related to Nightwish both musically and with Floor in this version it's not a stretch to mention NW here. Also, why so defensive? Relax, pretty sure Tom will get to more Epica aswell as Nightwish.
@@AlvenmodFoto Well, I'm a big Nightwish fan too, and I love Floor. But I think Epica and Simone don't get as much attention as they deserve. Yet, whenever there is a new Epica reaction, sooner or later someone starts talking about Nightwish and tries to steer it back to Nightwish and Floor. Like I said, 12 reactions to NW so far. That's more than enough to post all the relevant info there. If it was the other way around, if they did 12 reactions to Epica and only 2 to Nighwish, I wouldn't mind people asking for more Nightwish, but...
