Need some help diagnosing starter problems on your Yamaha ATV? We’re here to help. The starting system on your Yamaha ATV is a chain of circuits and components, and failures anywhere along this chain could cause starting problems on your Yamaha Grizzly.
Check out our exploded Yamaha YFM700 Grizzly starting system diagram to get a look at the parts before we start testing: www.partzilla.com/catalog/yam...
We’ll start and end with some simple explanations, and in the middle we’ll get into the meat of the electrical system on this Yamaha Grizzly. First, the battery will need a test. If it’s dying on you, it’s a simple replacement that you can find at Partzilla.com. Once you get past that, we’ll look at the starter motor, the relays, the brake light relay, and the diode. After we get done looking at these connections, we’ll check out the switches. The kill switch and the starter switch could be the culprit, and we’ll also look at the switches on the gears.

Great Video presentation. I've got a customers bike in the shop and it's a total mess when the original rider was a young kid that destroyed this 2004 Yamaha Bruin 350 4x4 harness. I've never seen so many splices and twisted wires in my life. So far I have determined that the starter relay is shot. I also believe a pigtail should be on these quick disconnects .

I'm here now for my confession. After I let a kid start up my Kodiak for fun, it later refused to start. I checked everything - connections, switches, fuses, battery, grounds, relay, even regulator. NO LUCK. Then I sat on the quad and tried to remember what he might have done while sitting on it. Then I discovered a very small button I NEVER KNEW EXISTED under the starter switch - the engine kill switch. So after replacing the solenoid and almost submitting to a mechanic for help, I found the problem. The kid had hit that button by accident I never knew it. I told my wife I had finally found a loose plastic wire connector, so we'll leave it at that.😁

Informative and helpful video for testing the relays. But what about those 5 pin relays? They are easy to test their function with voltage, but how to test them for resistance?
The 5 pin resistors seem to function opposite the other resistors. When power is applied, then the resistance in that middle pin goes from low to high?

Excellent video. One comment. When working on the battery or starter relay positive wire. Remove the the negative wire from battery first. Then work on the positive wire. When your set up for a test reconnect the negative battery wire.
Reason for this is the negative side of the battery is connected to ground, all the metal of the machine. You don't want your wrench connecting positive to ground.

G'day John, I have a kodiak ultramatic 4x4 oncommand, The starter is spinning but is not engaging. Is the engage mechanism in the motor as i removed the starter and usually you can see a spring on a twist spline which throughs out and engages the cog. I am guessing this is part of the internals. I cant find anything online about this particular problem. It has been working fine up till a few days ago. A now it like a light grinding sound. The cog the starter spins on looks good. Any advice would be great. Cheers Daz

Thank you for the kind, thoughtful and helpful video.
I have a 2016 Yamaha Kodiak 700 EPS SE that stopped while my wife was running it. The machine is a work vehicle on our ranch. We do not race or use the machine for play.
Prior to it stopping we did not notice any error codes on the display. And now the display will light up but it does not show any data.
i have put a new battery in the machine.
When keyed on the screen will light up but it doesn't display any information. I do not hear the fuel pump run.
The engine will turn over but not start. The lights and winch for example, do run.
I hear clicking noise when first keyed on. I placed my finger on the object it to confirm, it looks like it might be a relay clicking on the right side of the machine. When first keyed on one clicks, the other doesn't make any noise.
To check the fuses, I placed the negative terminal of the multimeter on the negative post of the battery. I keyed the machine on, I then placed the positive terminal on each fuse and checked both sides of the fuse for voltage.
    They all read 12.X volts.
Can you suggest further troubleshooting processes?
Since the display lights up but doesn't display any data like miles or hours on the machine could the ECU have failed to cause this?
Thank you and happy trails, Mike

The bike starts and runs fine, intermittently it stalls at any RPM, it will restart but shows a error code 33, it will then run fine for a period of time, then repeatedly stop. I have replaced the coil and tested new and old with no problems. I know code 33 relates to ignition coil, any help be appreciated.

This is common and almost impossible to figure out. If you tested coil packs and they are good, usually you have a direct short somewhere on the harness. You can try to trace them and sort it out, or get a new harness and run it. Not great options, but not much else to do.

I have a 2005 Grizzly..you talked about a scenario which happened to me recently-I rode my bike down my graveled dirt driveway, about an 8th of a mile. It was running great (I live on a bumpy dirt road) when I got back on it wouldn't start. That was a month ago or more. My main problem is...I cannot remove the outer plastic shell..it has "pins) in it with teeny screws? In them so I first used a screwdriver...no luck..then I read that you should push the pin in and it should pop out. No luck. Can you please teach me how to get the shell off ? I know I could fix it by watching your video, but I need to see what I am doing and get my hands in there! Thanks a bunch!

John, my brake light doesn't work with the rear lever (left) and pedal. Also, does not start in gear. I have checked continuity on the left lever switch, it appears to function. Fuse is good. If the brake relay is bad, would it cause the brake light not to work and the bike not to start in gear. Mine is a 2009 700 Grizzly, the location of the brake relay is a little different from you video. Could you help me with finding the correct relay? Thank you!!!

Having same problem with exact same 2009 Grizzly 700,would only start in park no other gear and now having trouble having it idle/stay running once started.Only way to have it not stall out now after having to battery pack boost it is to hold start button in and that's NOT GOOD I feel to do.Maybe for your brake/gear starting issue you might beable to tighten up on spring at brake end.I'm looking for an answer for WHY would I have to hold in GREEN starter switch while it's started to beable to keep it running without it bogging out and stalling. It will start EVERTIME its boosted but stall out without starter button held, have new battery as well, maybe bad fuel? Will be investigating this week.

How do you tell if the relay is bad? I put a meter to mine with it still attached and tried cranking the bike. It only read about 7.5 volts. But the batter was reading 12. Does that mean the relay is bad?

    • @FranktheDachshund

Relay is just an electric controlled on off switch. The relay will usually have 4 pins, two activate the switch and two are the open or closed circuit. You put 12 volts into the relay, and it should click and either open or close the circuit.
