- Why your toilet tank is not filling up with water and how to fix it instruction.
In this video I will show you how to repair your toilet if it is not filling up with water.
Stay with me to the end of the video and I promise that you become a pro in this matter. Also at the end of the video I will give you a tip to make the troubleshooting a lot easier for you.
I insist you to follow my steps and please don’t skip any.
And please subscribe and hit the like button to support my channel.
Let’s see what tools you need for this job!
You need a Channel lock, you need a towel, you need a Bucket and you need a sponge or a shop vac. And I show you the required materials in a bit.
As you can see I’m planning to use a shop vac instead of a sponge since it makes the job quicker and also I don’t have any sponges around.
First thing first, you need to open a tap to make sure that you have water in the house.
Let’s open the tap in the bathroom sink.
As you can see, I have water in the sink and it confirms that the problem is only with the toilet.
Let’s go back to the toilet. I remove the lid for the toilet tank and there is no water inside.
We have water in the house but not in the toilet.
Now I am going to test the toilet to find out where exactly the problem might be.
We have 3 plumbing parts to test, a shutoff valve, a supply hose and a filler valve. I’m going to start the test at the lowest point which is the shutoff valve.
You need to have a braided hose after the shutoff valve, if you don’t, then consider watching my other video here to learn how to replace your existing toilet supply hose with a braided hose.
Turn the valve off, disconnect the braided hose from the toilet tank and place it into the bucket.
Slowly turn the valve on, to make sure you have full pressure at this point, if you don’t have pressure then the problem is with the shutoff valve or the braided hose and you need to replace them. But in this case I have full pressure down here which means the shutoff valve and braided hose are just fine, and now I’m %100 sure that the problem is with the filler valve inside the toilet tank, so for the materials I just need a new toilet filler valve which I already have a universal one here.
I use the shop vac to empty all the water inside the tank.
And now that all the water is removed, I start removing the old filler valve, removing it is very easy since there is only one nut holding it in place, loosen the nut and it should come off.
Now I start preparing the new filler valve and put the parts together, you can read the instruction that comes with it or just watch how I do it.
I installed the new filler valve and connected the supply hose back.
Let’s turn the shutoff valve on.
As you can see my toilet is just fixed.
Here is the tip, I promised you at the beginning of the video,
Based on my experience if you have a toilet that is not filling up with water, there is a %90 percent chance that you can fix the problem by replacing the filler valve, but it is always a good practice to test the other parts and make sure they are working properly.
I hope this video has been useful and if so, please don’t forget to like, share and subscribe.
if your Toilet Not filling then watch this video all the way to the end and follow my steps, when a toilet not filling up with water then there might be different causes and in this video i explain every single cause and i show you how to fix it even if your toilet not filling up with enough water you are still covered in my video and you can also use this video if your toilet not filling fast enough I meet many clients in a week who has problem with no water in toilet tank and i always advice them to see my video and learn How to replace toilet filler valve which i believe is a cure to their problem, actually toilet repair requires some knowledge and you should not expect to learn everything over night but you can at least learn how it is done, i have been dealing with toilet repair flush valves for quite sometime know and it makes it easier for me to perform the job but you should give yourself at least a couple of hours if you planning to do the job yourself when a toilet not working no water in tank it is has very simple fix and i have shown every step in this video but if you have a toilet that is not working properly then you should first find out what part has failed and then attempt the repair, toilet not working after water shut off then I assure you that the problem is the filler valve and you just need to follow my steps on how to fix toilet flush valve even if you want to learn how to fix toilet not flushing or Why there is no water in the toilet tank and How to fix no water in the toilet my video got you covered.

@@PipeWrencher yes thanks.. I'm going in this week for parts and fix
this is probably the best explination video on how to fix my toilet on youtube. huge thank you to you pipe wrencher
Thank you, I'm Glad that I could help my friend.
I appreciate that you showed how to check for other problems first. That way we don’t go and buy parts we don’t need if the filler valve isn’t the problem.
You saved us 120$ that we can use on groceries with 6 kids . Thank you so much 🥰💕
My toilet tank was empty and your tips and instructions helped me troubleshoot and ultimately install a new universal filler valve, which I’ve never done before. Quick, simple, and solved the problem. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this tutorial. I’m a pretty hands on woman and love a diy challenge. I found this easy to follow and fixed my own toilet during COVID 19 lockdown here in Sydney.
That’s hot as fuck that gave me a stiff one lol
Seriously though good on you.
Great instruction for replacing the filler tube......but I was hoping for an explanation as to what the failure was that prevented the filler tube
from filling the tank up with water.
I’m wondering this same thing! What made the filler tube stop working??
If its a Fluidmaster toilet valve ........remove the valve, turn upside down and look into the tube. You will see a foam plug seated about 1 inch into the tube. Use needle nose pliers to remove that piece of shit and then replace your toilet valve. Fluidmaster doesn't even show that foam plug anywhere on their toilet bowl schematic diagram. It's worthless and fails over time. Thank me later.
This was incredibly helpful. I fixed the whole problem in about an hour including going to the hardware store. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
This video helped in resolving my issue. Great and clear explanation!
Thank you, I'm happy that it was useful.
Thank you... on my way to home depot to buy a filler valve..✌🏄♂️
Notice he only hand tightened nuts.. Don't use tools to tighten
I just fixed my problem thanks to you! You made it so simple!
Great to hear!
I got you a new lace front
Where’s the bulb thing??
Great job on explaining !! Best video for sure
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!!!! This video made it so much easier! I was discouraged about even attempting to fix it myself. But I did it thanks to this video!!!! 😊
What is it about the filler valve that prevents water from coming through it and filling up the reservoir?
This is what I need to know lol
It might be clogged not allowing water to get through
@@jacobinfante375 wouldn’t it be easier and less $ to clean it? I took mine apart but could not see where it was clogged, but I was guessing that was the reason, or a bad seal.
After fixing everything, when we turn on the water supply. It's leaking from the point where water supply connects to tank. How to fix it? Can you please help?
So you didn't fix it, you Just replace it.
It doesn't match the video title !
The main problem is water kept running without the level raised up !
I don't need to buy a part for my toilet not that long ago. I'm going to just pour some extra water in tank, it is low not to the fill but I don't know how much. It is low, not up to that fill line. we replaced that not that long ago. It's today it started, my 85 yr old mother is freaking out thinking she needs a whole new toilet she's got my palms sweating maybe you can help me with her😂 thank you anyways
The plastic piece you unscrew to remove it will not come off. Its 2 separate pieces. A bolt and a piece underneath. How can I get this off without smashing the toilet or calling a plumber.
It's been 4 hours and th as t piece of shot eont come off.
Thank you!! I fixed my toilet perfectly because of you!!
That piece you used a wrench on does not unscrew for me. Its plastic on plastic. I've been at this shit for 4 hours. No saw and not calling a plumber.
I have a problem with the filler valve inside toilet tank (not filling with water but I have full water pressure). Before I replace it, could I pour water into my tank for a one-time flush?
I have this exact problem but the water is going into the tank but very slowly and just seems to drip into the tank. So I assume it's just the valve that needs to be replaced.
thank you for this video, it was very helpful!
I finally got the nut thing off the bottom but the old one is not lifting right out. It has black rubber or puddy or something that has it seriously stuck to the inside of the tank. Should l pry it off with a screwdriver?
Man u r the best. The set up is different on my tiolet but i was able to fix it with ur video. You saved me a few thousand dollars there 😭😭😭😭😭
Thanks, glad that it worked for you
Thank you for the video! I’m NOT AT ALL HANDY, and you made it super easy!!!
What if theres no water coming out of the wall pipe how can i fix that
My house has water but not the toilet
Just no pressure of the water
Thank you UA-cam, my lazy bum ass stepfather would have taken 5 months to get this done
In my case the filler valve's water buoy stuck mid way down, so just by touching it fixed the problem. I've cleaned it sides, so hopefully it can move up and down again. It's mainly the rusty gunk that interfered with it's movement.
Good video but it's not a channel lock, it's an adjustable wrench, channel lock is a brand name. Just a pet peeve.
Very good instructional video. This was very helpful. Be well. God bless.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. After testing the shut off valve and braided hose and reconnecting the problem was fixed!
Beside the filling valve , check the flapper ( or canister Flush Valve Seal look like a Yellow ring gasket ) to see if it got harden or so many hard water residues deposited on it. This flapper or Valve seal problem will open then allowing water running.
Diagnosis:
By pressing down the canister Valve seal and water start filling up, that indicates Flush Valve seal is worn out.
Summary:
One of these two problems or both.
1. Toilet Canister Flush Valve ( if your toilet tanks installed with this Kohler parts )
2. Silent Fill Valve Kohler parts
The first tip I got was to skip to the part of the video that I wanted to know badly 😂
But the inside of my toilet doesn't look like this, it has a balloon like object inside
Thanks very much, very helpful!
love the methodical approach and no nonsense repair, thanks.
So easy even a girl can do it. Took about 10 minutes. Hardest part was getting the nut on & off in the dark bathroom with left hand side close to a wall. Just have a bowl or pan ready in case your water doesnt shut all the way off. Mine was still trickling out even with everything shut off. Thank you Sir!
your welcome Donna, Glad that I could help.

folks, its ok to take the tags off your supply lines!
You said no step skipped!!! What if there is no water coming out the supply line ????
Then you turn the water on
@@idair1 your funny! NOT!
Is there no way to fix the filler valve? My toilet is filling, just very slowly and then kinda leaks into the toilet like the handle isn't up properly
We recently had our bathroom retiled and they took the toilet tank out and they had to reinstall it. I'm wondering if something went wrong with the reinstallation because we never had problems with the toilet before
Thank you for giving me the confidence!!!!’
I just picked it up and threw it out window
Thanks so much
You're welcome!
It worked!
I was super hopeful this was the problem.......turn outs the line is frozen.......
Id like to add all the other taps work in the house both cold and hot so this odd
Lmfao this makes me wanna be a plumber
How do you get more water in your toilet bowl

@@PipeWrencher Thank you my friend
My toilet is not getting any water from supply valve, even after replacing toilet fill valve to a new one, but bathtub and sink have water. How can I fix this? Thanks!
I wish I knew as I have same problem!
@@EricJJ I fixed it by pressing inwards on that white plastic turn valve.
@@JonJonChannel I’m assuming and hoping it’s the supply line itself. Glad you were able to fix yours👍🏻
I was thinking the hose was clogged and started there since I had the issue before on a different one. Then I figured it was the filler after It still didn’t work. Found your video and felt relief when I checked it wasn’t the water pipe. It was the Fill valve indeed. It was fast to replace it after seeing your video! Last time someone helped this time I did it! Thank you! Saved me the money that someone else would have charged to come do it. Ladies try it, put fear aside. This is the best video. Saved in my DYI 🚽 folder 🤩💜 If anyone is curious I bought Universal high performance since that is what is what is in the other one that was fixed years ago. It fits many different toilet, good chance it’ll fit yours.
Thanks you saved me a plumber. I'm going to the hardware store right now LOL I'm telling the truth. Have a happy 2023
Thank u bro....very helful
Thank you so very much. You provided excellent instructions that helped me.
Happy that I could help.
The valve when it gets clogged it won't fill the tank and that's an easy fix. And mostly of the time that's the problem.
No need to replace the fill valve.
I have done it 4 times with my toilet.
In fact the las time I fixed it, it was just a few minutes before I watched this video.
What I am trying to figure it out is to prevent the clogging of the valve and I think there's nothing to do about it.
In some cities the running water is hard (means it contains a lot of minerals that build up within the passing little holes, obstructing completely the flow.
As soon as the cap is removed the holes are seen clogged.
Just grab a small diameter nail enough to fit in the holes and scrape the buildup off., rinse and reinstall.
saw this and fixed it in - 1 sec
Thanks mate...appreciate the help.
Very helpful 👌 thanks
My toilet wouldn't fill unless I shut off the water and then turn it back on...no good. Watched your video, went to Home Depot for a new fill valve, and 15 minutes later I was done and the toilet was working properly again. Thank you so much for this video...made it easy to do myself for $8.
What if the problem isn't the shutoff valve or braided hose?
I'm getting no pressure after replacing shutoff valve and braided hose
In my case, no water is filking the tank. I noticed The pipe that channeling water into the tank is rusty. Water not flowing into the tank. What should I do.? Everything in the tank is normal. All components works well.
Informative video, I have similar problem with my washing machine, the washing machine tub is not filling full, water pressure is okay !
Please upload similar video for washing machine
Wildly valuable. Thanks!!!
Thank you!! Fixed!!
I am a very hands-on person so when I came across your videos. I was super excited to know I'm about to fix the problem following your instructions.
Many thanks
nice i have learnt the process
Excellent thanks. My toilet needs a new filler valve. Will get one ASAP and fix it.
Thank you Pipe Wrencher!! I just watched your video, and fixed the toilet!!! I had a difficult time unscrewing the nut underneath, since it is next to the bath tub, but I was bound and determined. It now flushes!!! Now, when the plumber returns my call from this morning, I can tell him I fixed it myself, watching Pipe Wrencher on UA-cam!!! You saved me $$$$...
Thanks for this video. Helped me to figure out my problem was my filler valve
@2:49 - So, what's your advice for instance if one experiences ZERO pressure at the Shut-Off Valve?
(1) Hose has been disconnected from the Shut-Off Valve; (2) Water from the Shut-Off Valve is coming out at an extremely slow drip, next to nothing - there is ZERO pressure coming from the Shut-Off Valve; (3) The filter has been checked and removed from the Shut-Off Valve, but still no flowing water; (4) the Shut-Off Valve has been completed unscrewed from the mains water source however there still no flowing water - the mains water pipe appears to be blocked.... (5)
*** This issue applies to both toilets in the household where both cisterns are not filling up with water. Each toilet is located at complete opposite ends of the house. In addition to this, this issue has now expanded to include the cold water tap for the washing machine - the Cold water tap has ZERO flowing water, however the hot water tap still works fine, and strangely enough, both hot water and cold water taps work everywhere else (both showers, bathroom sinks, bathtub, kitchen, etc) Why is this issue only affecting 3 locations within the home and not all water points throughout the house? Is there any quick fixes to unblocking the mains water pipe without having to call a plumber in to dig holes?
This was so helpful! I don't know anything about fixing toilets but this video helped me fix mine!
Thank you I knew the problem didn’t know how to take it apart and put it back together. Huge thank you to this video! My toilet flushes again yay 🥳🎉 no more filling the back with 2 gallons of water haha saves my back and time. Thank you.
I just fixed my toilet watching your video. I was able to identify the issue, troubleshoot it and fix it. Thank you!
I just followed step 1 and connected again after checking water pressure and it worked. 👍👍👍
All I did was accidentally bump the filler valve and it started filling back up. ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
I have exactly the same problem now. Your new Valve is exactly the same I see the problem now. Thanks for the video.
My toilet refills if i just take the top off and barely tap the fill valve apparatus. Is it possible there's just some small adjustment I can make to fix without havong to replace the whole valve?
How exactly the water fills the tank and the bowl during refill phase?
Thank you so much!! My son had recently put a toy in the toilet and I couldn't figure out why I didn't have water flow afterwards. This explained it so well and was an easy fix🙏🏽🙏🏽you
Very good video, now I can fix my tank. Thanks very much.
sweet thank you. I confess I was a bit upset last night when the toilet in the new house did not fill. Followed your steps and just had to replace the filler set up
