  • Dr. James Conca on how to respond to Dirty Bombs, and comparing the threat of different types.
A conventional explosion, such as a car bomb, can disperse a radioactive powder over a large area but dose decreases dramatically with distance from blast.
    RDDs or Dirty Bombs:
    • Use conventional bombs or methods to disperse radiological materials.
    • Are Weapons of Mass Disruption causing panic disproportional to the real danger.
    • Contaminate vital infrastructure and trigger large economic consequences.
    • While most radiological source materials are small, with little real radiological consequence, large RDDs over 50,000 Curie are feasible and can have major consequences.
    • Logistically similar to the 9-11 attacks.
    • It is imperative to reduce these vulnerabilities, lessen the impact, and mitigate the aftermath effects.
    • The first RDD attack will most likely be against a U.S. military base overseas.
    The Threat is Real:
    • Several credible designs and plans for a dirty bomb attack against the U.S. have been found in Al Qaeda records.
    • Two actual dirty bombs were deployed by Chechen separatists (foiled and failed).
    • 38 Alazan rockets outfitted with dirty bomb warheads for sale in Moldova in late 1990s.

Dr. Jim Conca's Dirty Bombs talk only has a brief moment of hard-to-read slides, it gets better fast. Please consider supporting my video editing efforts: patreon.com/thorium ...I charge only yearly so I can appreciate it is a hassle to do so, but trust me you can afford the money if not the time.

I remember back in the norwegian military in 1999-2000, I was a ABC-"specialist" and this was very interresting tho pretty classified. Good speech😊

the stuff I love about radiation work. the stuff that scares people shouldn't, and the stuff that doesn't, should. But yeah....agree with advise given here.

As a Habit I carry a Geiger-Muller Detector in my pocket. They only cost around $150 for a decent personal unit.
It has Alarmed twice in Public on me. Both times were fairly obviously a Cancer Patient who was undergoing RadioTherapy.
In One Incident the Person understood what it meant and in the moment it affected them painfully.
As I Silenced the Unit I turned to them and stated "Well it looks like my Hotty Detector is Definitely Paying Off for Me Today." XD
Life Really Sucks and that can be Absolutely Hilarious. Weird.

      what do you mean specifically?
this has widespread and persistent effects on the economies worldwide... just premature death and chronic illnesses alone.

for example, recent use of depleted uranium, can be dispersed in trade winds, this makes it to the us... poisoning hawaii and the mainlands as well as other countries along the path... you can correlate sickness to it... and identify it in blood tests... and thats just one exposure source among many... do you think people who have fatigue due to this, would want to work etc? what if they have cancer?
the costs to exonomy ia much more than one would initially assume.

Much of the fear of russia is because they do have nuclear weapons. Thats why support for attacked Ukraine is so diluted and non-direct, while NATO could wipe conventional army in days perhaps. It is all based on the fact that Ukraine doesn't have weapon. Except Ukraine could send back some of the material from Pripyat in the form of drone load to the center of Moscow and prepare such package in a matter of days. How ridiculous it is to start war with modern country in the middle of Europe? I wouldn't want to see desperate Ukraine, on the other hand If being in Ukraine place I would make such simple facts known for Russia and also for US debating to limit conventional help.

None of the excuses people in power like to imply about their reticence to go deeper into Ukraine has anything to do with nuclear weapons; that's simply a very convenient excuse. If Taiwan were invaded the same excuse would quickly be discarded in the face of China for the simple reason that protecting Ukraine is mostly unimportant to U.S. interests. Taiwan, by stark contrast, contains the beating heart of all modern technological power--something China has been unable to achieve on her own (global dominance of semiconductor fabrication). If the U.S. loses Taiwan to China their balls will be in an actual vice. If Russia gains Ukraine what in the U.S. economy will really change or be threatened?
