    Mark, I took your tip and looked where the air conditioning filter was located and sure enough, white on top and black on the bottom. That tells me I have a EPDM roof. Thank you for all of these great tips, now on to ordering the kit to re surface my TT roof. George

    Great video, I have a major roof repair coming up and I wanted to identify the roof type so I could buy all the materials in advance. Thanks for your video.

    There also is a roof material that is a combination of EDPM and TPO it is called alpha ply you should use a sealant 1010 non sag by alpha.

    I've got a 30 foot 1986 fireball pull behind and I don't think it has either. I think it's just metal (aluminum) roof.

    Glad to know those simple ways to figure out my roof type. I'd probably be taking apart the whole roof to find out. Hehe. Thanks, Mark

    My class A doesn't have anything like that it's like a hard plastic. I don't think it's fiberglass. Anyone know what it is?

    Hi Mark, I just used this video to confirm that I have a TPO roof. What is the recommended method of cleaning TPO? Also what Dicor product is best for UV protection on TPO?

    Great information. Does the manufacturer tell you anywhere else? I'm guessing there is a different sealer depending which roof type you have?

    I have EPDM rubber roof with mold spores eating it away with patches where it peeled and flaked away. I should say it was a EPDM liquid coating "Liquid Roof Brand" from almost three years ago that was applied and has the black mold spore problem. I am looking for a product that is mildew and mold resistant. I would love to replace the roof with fiberglass but it's too expensive. Your help would be greatly appreciated in recommending a mold proof substance or material.

    I recently bought a 1971 chevy class c motor home. my vents have metal framing. I have 3 leaks I think but it's not obvious where they are. can someone tell me where/how to find out what kind of roof I have so I can get the proper sealant?

    Why do they not use a solid roof material like fiberglass or tin?

    • @rveducation101
      @rveducation101  10 років тому +1

      Some RV manufacturers do use fiberglass and metal roofing, but these types of roofs have maintenance issues too. Fiberglass can crack from the stress and flexing and most metal roofs had seams etc. Rubber roofs were lighter, one piece, could flex and required little maintenance.

    You also have an RV roofing material that is polyester called Krystal Kote (by Valspar)? Does this fit into EPDM or TPO?

    • @rveducation101
      @rveducation101  8 років тому

      If I'm not mistaken Krystal Kote was a composite material used on pop up roofs for awhile. This is the only Krystal Kote product I am aware of. It is similar to some composite ABS type materials used on the sides of some RVs. This would not be EPDM or TPO.

    How about just calling the RV manufacturer?

    This identification is WRONG! Not all TPO is all one color. TPO is black on the inside and white on the outside, or roof side. Velsicol for example is one TPO product that is white and black. The ONLY TPO that is all one color is the flashing for the TPO. Steven products are Tan and Duralast is a tancolor as well. If you use the wrong products on either roofing then you could cause additional failure.NEVER I REPEAT NEVER use roof cement on either of these products to stop a leak. NEVER use silicone either.

      This video is talking specifically about EPDM and TPO material that is used on RV roofs, not on commercial buildings. The information in the video comes directly from Dicor, a leading manufacturer in the RV roofing business.

      Please understand we are not heckling this channel. We are trying to clarify the ID process since a customer of ours has brought this video to our attention. We are not advocates for rubber roofing. Most of the damaged roofs we service are due to rubber roof sealant failure, roof tears since rubber has low strength and rubber roof itself failing do to poor adhesion of the caulking used, since rubber itself is a fickle system and does not accept certain types of caulking. Rubber oxidizes and causes sealants to break loose, unknown the the owner. This system relies 100% on the caulking, as you can see in the video and not the product at all transitions. That is the big problem.
      TPO is a welded system. There are no glues or caulking used at the transitions, such as AC units, vents and pipes. This is where the leaks start. We are trying to clarify this ID process. TPO is by far a much better roof system than any rubber roof.
      A person going by your ID process would think we are installing / installed a rubber roof. We DO NOT install rubber roofs. We are not trying to heckle your channel. The best way to tell if you are not sure is that the rubber will stretch, like an inner tube on bike, when you pull it. TPO does not. TPO is also more expensive than rubber. TPO has no caulking around the transitions, if you can get on the roof and see. TPO typically has a sheen to it. TPO is like a pool liner. They do not use rubber for pool liners because they fail. We are glad to answer any of your questions if you would like. You can contact us at georgia exterior at g mail. Again, we are not heckling this channel.

      Georgia Exterior I do understand, but in the RV Industry manufacturers primarily use two roofing materials EPDM and TPO on RV roofs. Dicor is the largest and leading manufacturer of these two types of RV roofing materials. Dicor wanted a video to demonstrate how RV owners could distinguish between the Dicor EPDM and TPO roofing materials used on RV roofs. The information in the video was provided by Dicor to help distinguish between their EPDM and TPO products.

      TPO seams are heat welded with hot air, EPDM seams are glued together with adhesive. There are a lot of (reinforced) TPO brands that have black or grey coloring underneath..
