StraightTalk Enables Mobile Hotspot on Unlimited Smartphone Plans

- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- StraightTalk is a TracFone brand that provides prepaid, no-contract phone service on the Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile networks.
While they have offered data only plans for mobile hotspot devices for years, their smartphone plans have never officially include the use of personal mobile hotspot.
Last week however, they did sneak in the ability to turn on personal mobile hotspot on their $55/month unlimited smartphone plan - to include up to 10GB of mobile hotspot use.
Update: Seems that the hotspot feature ONLY works on Verizon and T-Mobile based plans.

My only problem is im paying for truely unlimited data, hotspot runs off mobile data. But I only have 10gb. So then im not getting truely unlimited and its false advertisement
Yep, almost every plan around restricts hotspot data. More details are in our guide:

As a Visible customer I will advise others that they are a good carrier for iPhone users and hit-and-miss for Android devices. I brought an unlocked Samsung S9+ to Visible and they could not ever get it activated. So I bought an S9+ from Visible...and they could not get it activated. So I returned it for an iPhone XR. It activated on the 1st try. Also be aware that Visible uses only VZW's owned 4G towers but not any of the towers that VZW leases from small rural carriers - meaning you will have no coverage in areas where VZW downgrades to 3G or slower coverage. So road warriors should pay very very close attention to the Visible coverage map.

Oh that's probably why mine stopped working. I've had mobile hotspot on my LG Fiesta 4 years. It seemed like things quit working when I went to the multiplan. We actually don't even need that plan anymore because we have internet at home and work now so I'm going to downgrade. What happened the hotspot for small things like sending things out for my work on the road really helps. I'll have to try that
Figures, switched over to Verizon so I could hot spot to my laptop. Straight Talk punished me for using Hot-Spot and shut off my data completely after a top-up and I lost all that data. I was with Straight Talk for 11 years and will never go back. You'd figure spending $720 a year on Straight Talk service they would let you slide now and then on Hot Spot.
Straight Talk didn't let anyone know that ATT stopped offering hotspot and penalized anyone using it through straight talk.
Happened to us but I complained and they turned it back on with a warning to change the SIM card
Thanks for updates. My wife just started the Verizon pre-pay for $35/mo w unlimited text/data and 6 GB data + hot spot. Happy so far.
I go though 6 GB in 2 days
@@Bryan-Hensley yep, me too at 180GB a month. This phone is for unlimited text n talk plus a few gigs for UA-cams on the road.
@@csjmoore I'm talking about on the road.
@@csjmoore when I'm camping and racing, I probably use 12 GB in 20 hours.
I will explain more fully: I have the Verizon "Unlimited, unrestricted grandfathered gold plan" on smartphone 1. On the road, I use 120 - 180 GB per month to cover two smart TV's, two tablets, two computers and my amateur radio Allstar nodes. On the pre-pay phone 2 I have unlimited text/talk plus 6 GB data as a bonus but might get the Visible package so my wife can stream videos to her phone and tablet (5Mbps can do this). I am satisfied with the phone 2 plan as it fits our application.
As I stumble into the last century. How would the connection work between a iphone & a ipad, bluetooth? I have the original SE not the '20 model SE.
Personal Hotspot is usually over Wi-Fi, though you can technically do it over Bluetooth too. But there is no reason for that since Wi-Fi is easier and faster.
See, this is pure greed. We basically had a great setup, where it was unlimited hotspotting. Where I live, I can't get decent internet, and straight talk had been my go to for a year and a half. But as of these last two weeks, I couldn't figure out why my hotspot just stopped. Its a hard cap, straight just cuts you off. Not reduced hotspot speeds, which is pretty much the standard anymore. They were great, but no longer. I'm going to be finding a new service provider.
While it may have worked in the past, it wasn't officially included.
Mobile Internet Resource Center well why do they make it sound as though they are giving a better deal now? "wasn't officially included" my ass. they did that shit so word would get around and more would jump on the bandwagon.
Question? How can I check to see how much of that 10GB hotspot internet I have left and how much I have used?
You'll have to check with ST for how they report that.. we don't personally have the plan.
You can check in your settings
Question, I have a straight phone from 2018 and it does not have the hot spot feature. Do I need to buy a new straight talk phone or does straight talk have new software for that feature?
You should contact StraightTalk and ask them.
Hey everyone, I have the Straight Talk J3. I just bought it on Black Friday. I was planning on getting wifi for the tablet I bought my daughter but, this phone has hotspot. I use the unlimited card. The J3 I just bought was $59 and has hotspot. Hopefully it'll continue to work, so far so good!
It wont continue to work, all you get now is 10GB, thats like streaming maybe 3 Marvel movies and its done... it used to be free and came with your "unlimited" plan like a year ago.
Also the J3 is complete shit... trust me i fucking hate this phone, and i have never hated a Samsung device up until now.
I never get 4GLTE, even though this POS says its on a LTE network it fails at telling you what network (info holding). Speed tests will basically lead you in the write direction... far far away from this scammy service. 3G is definitly not 4G and all tests i have run have confirmed 3G ...and not 3GLTE but just slow standard 3G, and thats on good days or rather good morning at 4am, the only time the typical 2G speeds pick up to 3G... but never reach 4G let alone anything resembling LTE... other than a falsified banner.
I was wondering ifnyou guys knew how to set up personal hotspot on iPhone SE 2020 because I don't know how
If your plans supports it - the option is towards the top of Settings.
I have the $45 plan with unlimited everything up until a certain point and then your speeds go down depending on how much data you use. My phone is a straight talk phone with a hotspot option. Now if i try and use that for the laptop i have, will i be charged extra? Ive never used a hotspot before, i either use my mobile data or wifi. How does this hotspot thing work? Please help me understand!
I did text them and straight talk said that if i did have the hotspot option on my phone (which i do), i have to upgrade to the $55 plan.....?
Only the plan we highlighted here includes hotspot.
This is true and untrue. They had unlimited with certain phones to begin with. But they slowed you down after a certain use of GBs. Now they let you only use 10gbs and they cut you off. Ok so you are getting screwed. I changed the next day that I was cut off.
They blocked my phone from using it as a hot spot sending me a message that said I was using it as a hot spot and it was not In my plan even though the prepaid card I bought from Walmart for $55.00 a month unlimited high-speed mobile data that include 10 gigs of high speed data, when I txt them back they sent me responding txt that my txt was not a valid txt.
What if your hotspot usage was cut off after they reviewed your account? Will it activate automatically or do I have to wait until my plan renews?
That would depend on any action taken against an account as a result of the review. StraighTalk does not publicize that information.
They take all your data you can only make calls, no MMS, you have to buy another card
But no tethering hotspot for AT&T phones.
So if I buy the $55 plan I can use the smart view on my phone? Because as of now it don't work. My phone don't even have a hotspot option on it.
You do have to have a smartphone capapble of creating a hotspot.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter awesome thank you so much
To use smart view you need roku
I've used Straight Talk for about eight years I haven't had a single problem running on a Verizon tower and I've been hotspot in the whole time all of my stuff at my house I have no cables run to my house. I've consumed 40 gb. and no buffering. $60.80
I feel like thats a lie.
@@ShadowDeus I'm still doing it. I have only been hot spotting my laptop hook to my tv and a tablet. And only for about 4 years. I've had straight talk for about 8 years
I can confirm that PDANet+ still works. Which is what I use as a workaround since they pushed an update to my phone disabling hotspot usage. I live on a campground in the middle of nowhere and the WiFi here never works. This is pretty much my only option. Other than paying ridiculous amounts of money for a unlimited contract data plan, or for satellite internet. Also, in my experience, they will pretty much always shut your data off at the 60Gb limit. I mainly just do a lot of online gaming and video streaming. Which should be nowhere near violating their terms of service. Somehow though, they always deem what I use my data for as against their terms of service. However, since I've started using PDANet+, they haven't shut my data off due to usage since.
Wats pdanet+?
@@BellaFrice It's an app that allows bypassing of tethering and hotspot lockout.
@@kenevans3659 oh I. Well I wanna keep it legal. I dont wanna lose my service lol
@@BellaFrice Completely your decision. I will say that I've been using it for roughly six months since they forcefully pushed an update to my phone, disabling what was enabled by default on my phone when I purchased it, and have used it countless times in the past and have never had a problem. I consider it getting what I paid for ;)
@@BellaFrice A more in depth explanation as to how it works is, you install it on your phone that you're trying to use as a hotspot, and every device that you want to connect to it. The app itself creates a separate connection between your phone and the connected devices. Which in turn reports as app data usage on your phone, rather than hotspot or tethering usage. Which is not against terms of service. It will not enable you to turn on default hotspot and tethering.
Nice to see this, but can't compare to the new Visible party plans. True unlimited with hotspot when you have a "party" of 4 lines it's only $25 per line. If you have just 1 line then it's $40 like you said.
We just did a video on Party Pay too.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter yes nice done! Appreciate all the info. 👍
I have had Consumer Cellular for my voice service with the included data plan without a landline. I noticed that CC offers a jet pack type device with caps on data, but seems reasonable for "lite" users. Have you reviewed their offerings? Curious if their plan is worth it.
Yes, we recently had a CC video out.. check the channel and/or website
I paid for the $65 plan and everything came on but the hotspot but yet it's worked all the other months

What do you mean features that they dont allow?
they are advertising "now with 10gb hotspot" as though you are getting a better deal. I've been using thier hotspot for 8 months and never been throttled. now just 2 weeks in to my plan, on now cut off!
straight talk is that they have become even more greedy.
I bought another 55 dollar plan and if my hotspot doesn't connect...I'm done with them. I'm not stupid and I don't buy into thier make it worse but make it sound like its better philosophy b's.
Been using mine years and all of a sudden
Try using wifi when available to minamise the data usage! Like in my case a friend signed just my phone into wifi and not my TV but once at home I can switch the phone to wifi and power my TV through the hotspot! Now I'm my case I can't sign my TV directly into the wifi so the mobile hotspot helps me ! But yeah if wifi is available try putting your phone on wifi then using the hotspot!
@@ericmcginnis9413 the problem is that the hotspot used to come with the plan now it doesnt, its a classic case of bait&switching and StraightTalk should be penalized for it...

How do you check out how much data you used on the hotspot
I’m trying to find out the same. That’s how I came across this video. Seems they make it hard to find
cellular, then scroll down to personal hotspot (will be like how the updates are on iphone)
I bought the $100 Samsung prepaid at Walmart and a $55 unlimited card! I have connected to TV'S android radios and what I like best is that once logged into wifi even once your straight talk card expires you can still use the hotspot through wifi to power devices! I find that pretty cool! For example I have a smart TV and my phone is signed into wifi but since I don't know the password I can't sign my TV on to the wifi but I use the phones hotspot to power the TV and so far it seems unlimited or at least I have been doing it for a while!
huh
Do you know if Verizon launches investigation if you go over the 75g plan?
They don't have a 75GB plan that I'm aware of.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter yes, the get more plan.
Get More is an unlimited plan with a 75GB network management threshold. Just means your speeds may be slower during times of congestion after that usage.
@@MobileInternetResourceCenter
When i was with VZW i went over my data a few times, they just ask if you want to add 10GB for another 10$... if you say no you will be "DE"throttled to about 3GLTE assuming your on a 4GLTE network, while over here on ShitTalk you go from 3G to 1X and no option of adding GBs.
Any idea if Verizon will be reinstating the unlimited hotspot?
Afraid my crystal ball is broken.
My guess is that real unlimited will not return but the throttled limit GB will go up and up as 5G is deployed over larger and larger areas. Before 5G, competition will dictate GB and speed throttling limits but they will go higher n higher too. IMHO.
I have been using straight since 2011 I haven't heard investigating for too much usage. I was also a tracfone costumer too before straight talk came. Please I want further information about your last words.
Check your terms of service, the right to investigate is in there. They even put it on the sales page: "At 60 GB, we reserve the right to review your account for usage in violation of Straight Talk’s terms and conditions."

That that we're aware of... don't think any MVNOs do.
I have used hotspot the last two years! When you got up too 10 mb it just slowed down, I also used up too 60mb depending how much you used it, Most new STphones do NOT have hotspot, so had to buy another one older model. It saves you alot of money too without having too pay ATT too, as long as you dont abuse it ST will keep on, I only could hook up just my laptop only and not my tablet at the same time, so dont go sharing too much lol.. this phone here has hotspot LG Rebel 2 LTE (L58VL) - Straight Talk Android phone found it on Ebay pd 35.00, thanks.
It came out. It worked on my phone. For 3 days. Now it says connected to device but it does not work. I tried all the resets and such. Nothing is working.

A day late for me... Wal-Mart sold me a locked StraightTalk phone that used CDMA. I chose my S7 from the un-locked phone display but Wal-Mart messed up. After 6 months I wanted to change it to GSM because my vaction home didn't get CDMA service and StraightTalk said "no, you have a locked StraightTalk phone." Problem with straight talk. If it's your first phone. You have to purchase a phone from them. Boost, MetroPcs, and Cricket gives you a free phone. At long you activate and pay for a unlimited data plan. Which is $50.
Dumbest move they ever made. Seriously, 10 gb of mobile hotspot is atrocious. It was unlimited back in the day. Now? Not anymore. Time to reconsider providers.
