      Don't know if you saw the Planet Wild video about how relatively quickly and effectively you can generate massive biodiversity just by replicating storm damage in a 'green desert' plantation? They did this in Scotland with amazingly quick results. In governmental terms it would be incredibly cheap to just buy up carefully chosen plantations to create strategic islands of biodiversity all over the country to create 're-wilding mini parks'.
      The beauty of such projects is that once you've taken down a few hundred plantation type trees to let some sunlight into the forest floor, you really don't need to spend any money - just let nature get on with what she does best!

      When Rory was an MP he vehemently defended the right of hill farmers to continue centuries of ecological destruction of the Lake District through out dated sheep farming practices, based on an argument of history, culture and heritage. Here he is in favour of a new national park, presumably in another constituency. NIMBYism at its finest.
      The UK is one of the most nature depleted nations in the world and our National Parks are in an absolute state, ecologically speaking, largely thanks to people like Rory Stewart.
      This is laughable.

      @@carolinesmialek5365 good question and it’s difficult to say because a lot of UK media spouts similar stuff, but you should try and get a wide range of reviews. Campbell is very dogmatic in his views, and could be considered on the left of politics, even though he lied about the Iraq war. Rory Stewart was very much on the left of the Tory party. So they are really two beans in the same pod.

    I know Thailand well, my wife is Thai. Rory's statements about the success of the Thai economy are, if I'm generous, only partly correct. Yes, Thailand's economy experienced rapid growth through the 80's and 90's along with the other Asian tigers. But it has since fallen far behind those others he mentioned, Korea, Taiwan, as those counties consolidated their democracies while Thailand's military/monarchy held on. Thailand's example teaches precisely the opposite to what Rory claimed - the link between democracy and escaping the middle income trap remins quite strong.

    I wish people (esp. Americans) payed attention to at least a little happenings outside the US. Not just wars but actual politics. I think if Americans saw how the UK ran their elections, they would say why don’t we do it like that? E.g. short campaigns, finance laws, popular vote, # of political parties/constituencies. Also Americans would see just how far right the entire US government and both political parties are.

    Alister, wonderful interview on RTE. In regard to Sinn Fein and voters there is one factor that was missed in the interview; house ownership. Ireland has one of the highest ownership ratios in the EU 67% of voters are home owners rather than renters. The priority for this group is to elect a candidate - regardless of party - that has a track record of being pro-private property. Most people in the rental market are transient or not as well connected to the political centre, and usually do not bother to vote in Ireland, Sinn Fein has not cracked that nut yet, and is unlikely to be trusted with the nations private property portfolio.

      The idea that people of any particular religious belief (or for that matter national background) are organised into "communities" seems to me to be very unlikely. Or at least very out of date. And linking crime to such "communities" also seems like a stretch. Where do you get this idea that "Muslim communities" are engaging in "criminal activities"? Has your source also investigated "Hindu communities", "Jewish communities", "Christian communities", "agnostic communities" etc? And if so, how do these compare?

    Alastair, you seem worried about the school missile attack by Israel. But I haven't heard a lot of things about this that seem to be important to know, like was it a functioning school, or had it been closed for a considerable time? If it was running, was school in session? I don't think it was, right? And if there were people plotting your death in there, that would provide even a little justification to blowing it up, no? But you didn't say any of those things. Why is that?

  • @Cubeforc3
    @Cubeforc3 26 днів тому +2

    So Alistair complains about Israel claiming Hamas are being targeted but then blindly follows the Hamas numbers for casualties?
    Even according to Hamas' numbers there were only a handful of women and children in that school - meaning the vast majority were men. If you know anything about Gazan demographics it'd be very unlikely a "school" was full of mostly adult men. It's way more likely it was indeed a Hamas gathering.

There are some interesting podcasts in here on MBS and its fight with Yemen and why it wanted the Abraham Accord. Now we watch as Turkey or Egypt get's involved.
