@@thegrumpygeordie9007They talked about a bunch of political minutia between different regions and parties. They treated immigration like it was just a minor issue among several issues. And they only talked about it for a few minutes, and acted like concerns about immigration are just a messaging problem. Like they just need to be manipulative the public because they don’t understand that most of the mass migration is legal. So they think if you just stop the boats that everyone will suddenly support the replacement of European people with Africans and Muslims. and make people believe they are for immigration And they talked about things like how first pass the post can prevent the “hard right” being elected. But obviously the mass migration is the biggest issue. It’s like these establishment lunatics have never looked at population pyramid of one of these European countries broken down by country and by ethnicity. Or it’s like they haven’t walked around a major city where whites have been replaced. I mean the EU is on track for native Europeans under the age of 65 to decline from 300 million down 100 million by the end of the century while Africa is in track to grow from 1 billion to 4 billion. The only places in the world reproducing at sustainment are Africa and the Middle East other than a few outlets like Mongolia and Israel. Basically these guys were talking about politics like they are completely unaware of how serious the the shift in global demographic are.
Guys, as much I appreciate you and your opinions, you’re missing (omitting) the mess which the mass migration is causing in germany. That’s the underpinnings of all issues. 2015 was fundamental wrong decision (which helped flipped Brexit , in my opinion)
Reality is that the western society with its catastrophic low birth rate would collapse without immigration. There are literally not enough people to do the work and pay the taxes
You should make an episode on Denmark, and how the far-right has more or less died, because the center parties began doing serious strict immigration policies (Not anti-immigration) ; which has shown positive effects, even for immigrants themselves, having everyone better integration into society. Also EU's effect on reducing asylum seekers since the refugee crisis by having the application centers in bordering states. I feel this point of view is lacking, when talking about the-far right and immigration. There are examples in your neighboring country, how to do immigration- and dealing with the far right. Bring in Helle Thorning, maybe she knows more on how they dealt with DF and the far right.
That would require the centrists/liberals in other countries to accept that a reduction in immigration levels is necessary, and that regulations on immigration are necessary. In Denmark, the liberals/centrists accepted this. In contrast, in other countries, the liberals/centrists refuse to accept this and instead they gaslight their political opponents for talking about immigration as an issue.
The left wing does not understand: To the people political parties are a means to an end: It is the will of the people (essentially in ALL Western nations) to reduce illegal immigration and also any immigration from majority muslim countries. Full stop. As a left leaning party: follow Denmark's example or see the right wing win elections. As a left wing "journalist" Keep yelling "racist" or stop it - your choice; it's free speech. The will of the majority of people of ALL western countries you change NOT with left wing agitation! Time's up - you no longer move a needle by yelling "racist".
The biggest surprise about the rise of the “Hard Right” is that our political commentators are surprised. This has been brewing for a long time. Centrist politics have created this mess. At its core the whole issue of uncontrolled immigration and the knock on effects e.g. lack of integration, impact on services and infrastructure, perception that these individuals are prioritised over existing Nationals etc…. I don’t blame them for reacting they have nowhere else to go. It’s now up to the centrist parties to listen and change . However I suspect they will not as they see these people as “baskets of deplorables”. They do so at their own risk…..
my god. where do u people get off? what a load of utter utter cobblers. from start to finish. IGNORANT people are LEAD TO BELIEVE by G-bullsh*t "news" of this. that channel was DELIBERALTY SET UP to honk this nonsense by the people who KNOW they are to blame for the ills of society, KNOW that if they dont DEFLECT they will be in the firing line. it is just a continuation of Brexit... we need to LEAVE THE EU because if we dont our tax-empt, non-dom lying pzsychopathic russian-oligarch-style lives will be STOPPED. get a life! it is PEANUTS compared to the destruction of living standards in this country by w8nkers like Tice, Dyson and all the other "entrpenuers" who just wont PAY PEOPLE. you know, the Dyson who tried TO SUE CHANNEL 4 for "defaming" him by saying that he was somehow responsible for HIS COMPANY hiring factories that BEAT WORKERS. my god.
It blows my mind that these centrists simply cannot see the boiling pot of this issue. My family runs a business near the scampton air base which is about to be the asylum base for hundreds of asylum seekers. We're terrified that these seekers are just going to vacate the base and start harassing locals (specifically women) and start harassing local businesses. It only takes a couple to ruin it for everyone. And we already see that this has happened. There are no controls on ensuring seekers return to the base, and as we all know, they tend to get on public transport and bugger off to be used as undocumented labor elsewhere. There are very real pertinent issues that are just ignored. So you're telling me you're going to drop 500 men into an area with nothing to do, no money, poor housing and no jobs and hope that they dont make trouble? In a culture that they dont understand? where is the integration going to come from?
For now the rise of the hard right that you seem to be pretending to be concerned about has been very underwhelming. Honestly I see nothing genuine in what you wrote just repeating unsubstantiated platitudes about this (what?) being all the centrists fault.
@@Cuzthatwouldbeweird Centreists are allowing mass migration without recognising any of the consequences. Stop being an idiot and connect the dots. It really isnt hard.
The whole rise of the far right in Europe is explained in one sentence “ Wir schaffen das nicht”. If you take on record levels of immigration you better well be effective and strict in integration. The “ ruling class” always glossed over this in the worst way possible and now Europe has fundamental problems at every level ( economic, financial, cultural, religious, sociological, demographically).
Why do the immigrants come to Europe? To flee wars, was the west involved in the wars? To flee climate change, how responsible is the west for that? (Yes, China but that isn’t such an appealing country). The world is changing and power is now multipolar - not my phrase. Success and money is shared around a lot more. Because those poles are not always are democratic and progressive as Europe, people will come here. With the spread of money Europe will have less of an excellent quality of life. Do we sort out the reasons people come here or just the people when they come here? I say both. Then the changes a rapidly altering population bring. You can nibble away through good education but we know where the struggles in schools are in the uk. Look at the history of America when the religious loons went over there and have they ever fully recovered?
Its also important to make sure we're honest and clear about what is meant by 'integration'. Because some people do mean "integration", others mean "assimilation". They aren't the same, and this confusion is how thought leaders are are able to take people's "concern" and turn it into "hate and violence".
Plus as they say on the pod, Europe needs people to keep it working. Look at post war UK and the immigration numbers there. Jobs to do helped. How well do you think that immigration went? Looking back from today, there have been problems but I think it has worked out ok. I live in a large city with 40% of the population born outside the uk and it’s ok!
@@jezlawrence720 That’s fair enough, but to turn diversity into strength a certain level of fundamental integration has to happen. Unfortunately broad acceptance for Islam, in unreformed form, run counter to many liberal values we hold intrinsic in the West. We didn’t have a renaissance for nothing. Religion is obviously just one part of the equation but the political class hasn’t protected the values to claim to serve enough, not been willing to set up a system filled with hard conversations and ultimately consequences.
@@maxine2798 You might feel that way, most of the people in Europe ( and frankly i feel in the Uk) don’t. The problem isn’t that these people are born somewhere else,it’s that frankly people like yourself have failed to hold them to account in their failure to integrate and frankly ( at least partly) assimilate. It has become such a problem that you are the minority now, and will be forced to integrate in their social structure. You might be the rare person who doesn’t care about this but most people in Western Europe quit like are values and traditions shaped over hundreds of years. In general there tend to be a fair bit progressive than those held by most immigrants. Which always makes it so weird to me that generally liberal people failed to speak out on this issue.
I have become fed up with the incessant critiquing of populism and overall right wing shift in Europe whilst hearing nothing what so ever on WHY these people feel the way they do. Both Rory and Alister exemplify the technocratic centrist government, that ISN'T centrist on public opinion, but rather Centrist on what they deem to be right. It's incredibly patronising and inflames the tensions we already have.
I think we all know WHY people are voting for populist candidates. In past podcasts we’ve had reasons why. Now we’re watching it happen and perhaps we’ll also see how successful they are if they do gain power.
The reason for the rise in populism: largely uneducated people blaming immigration for their rising cost of living and reduction in state-provided services, and grifters capitalising on this through shrewd use of social media. Does that mean they're right? No. Is there any value in repeating this on the podcast? No.
Yeah, it shouldn't be called populism. Just call it demagoguery and lying. And as to why people feel the way they do, a better question is why their feelings should influence politics at all. Reason, yes. Feelings, no. If they have nothing to back up their assertions, they're unfit to participate in the political process at all. Save the feelings for your local football team.
What's driving it? Surely the "hard right" gained traction because goverments ignored the socio-cultural issues caused by mass immigration from a different theocratic culture? The interesting question here is why these two gentlemen prefer to talk about everything else but the problematic features of that culture?

Such a brilliant podcast with 2 completely differing ideological sides of the UK politics. We need more of this over the divisive culture war nonsense that is dominating "podcastistan" today
I don't think it's a coincidence that extremism is increasing as living standards are dropping. The moderates need to push harder on solving today's problems
Shouldn't we be asking why the hard right is rising, rather than condemning 30 percent of the population? Also,, what does hard right mean today. If 30 percent are voting this way, we have serious problems.
I spent a couple of years working in Germany when I was 20/21. I benefitted enormously from the experience. I am 59 now and feel very sad that my children don't have this opportunity.
@@hachwarwickshire292I worked in Germany . It’s more difficult now and too much red tape . The agency I worked for no longer offer it. Germany would like to recruit within the European Union
These things will be renegotiated. Had to get away from the control of the unelected, unaccountable, self appointed and increasingly totalitarian Politburo of the EUSSR. Germany will follow, then the whole sinister and evil project will be destroyed.
There is some truth to the West German colonization complaint. When the two Germanys reunited, the wealth was centered in the West. Western persons and businesses swarmed the East and bought up businesses and prime land which prevented East Germans from reaping the economic benefits of reunification, freedom and capitalism.
As an Austrian living in Eastern Germany at the moment, this podcast is very interesting - Thank you for picking up the topics! To put a few things into a broader picture, from personal experience: What I saw over the past couple of months in Eastern Germany is a mix of a few phenomena leading to the right wing uprise: 1) Yes, Eastern Germany often feels left behind. This is not only seen in where the money goes (eg more than 75 % of rent goes to western German owners, who baught the cheap houses after the Wall fell), but also in the way the Grundgesetz (constitution) is representing Eastern Germany. 2) After the Berlin Wall fell, a lot of well educated people left for the West. For higher wages, for their relatives, for better perspective and less unknown components. To this day, wages in the same company are not the same throughout Germany (due to, as was stated, the federal states' power). So still, a lot of young people study here (great Unis) and then leave. This is especially true for young women. And here's the thing: Women (according to sociology studies) are more likely to provide stable communities. How? They invite the neighbours for coffee, they bake cake for a school festivity and so on. So you end up with old and young frustrated people, more men that women in the countryside and bahm. Political radicalisation in any direction - left or right - sprouts. 3) Due to social media and (again) lower standards in education, populism has a strong hold on voters. Misinformation (especially regarding Ukraine, Russia etc.) has an amazing breeding ground in this environment. But, I am not so shure, if this actually will lead to a rethinking in the estabilshed parties for the upcoming election next year... In Austria, politics is highly influenced by immigration still. Per capita, 9 years ago, more asylum seekers where taken on than in most countries in the EU. Kickl (who yes is highly intelligent and talented - I fully agree with the Jörg Haider comparison) is very successful in using this topic, mashing it with poulism and anti-establishment slogans. What is interesting tough, he does not take voters from the conservatives - but from the working class/ socialist party! Putin and Russia are a whole different beast being kind of swept under the rug. There was a big spy-scandal recently in the secret service, where empolyees hired by the FPÖ in their time in the office for inner affairs. There are likely ties to Russia, moles in high positions affiliated to the FPÖ. And yet: No one talks about this with Kickl as head of the right wing party. The complacancy and even sympathy for the right wing in Austria is bizarre even to a lot of Austrians.
The UK aid spending on refugee hotel bills soars to £3.2 bn, the UK government wants to cut winter fuel allowance to save £1.5 bn. It seems reasonable to vote whatever party standing against this betrayal of British people.
It’s called triage. Not having shelter now has priority. Because we don’t distinguish between two tiers of human beings. But realistically, it is not a trade-off, both are required.
I fed up hearing about the far right. Here in the UK there is no far right threat. You cannot point out who they are, where they are or how they communicate and organise. There are overblown statements and people offered as bogey men but no substance. Frankly I am not taking the word of dodgy dossier Campbell for it. A man who should have been tried for war crimes in a sane world. Families are still grieving for those you sent to their deaths on your lies.
@@ijm1963 Tbf, Campbell didn’t actually make the policy, that was Blair. He defended it, and lied for it, but that would be a case of lying to the public rather than war crimes (and also he wouldn’t be my first target for that charge- cough cough Murdoch)
And good they aren't! Last time some moustached politician heared the "concerns" of the Germans, it ended quite badly for everyone. The concern and reaction of "the people" is not necessarily good and just, that's a fact. Millions over millions in all nations were jubilant at the outbreak of the first world war, and the lynch mobs in the early (or not so early) history of the US was also a result of the sentiment of the people. And then of course were all the witch hunts, where obviously innocents were blamed for failing crops. At all those times, all those involved felt righteous and thought of themselves fighting for the good of their people. But in hindsight maybe that popular sentiment was not neither good nor just.
Concerns created by the right wing press and right wingers, without a proper challenge from the left: The problem is that the left end the centre didn't grow some balls and say, actually, immigration is really good for us socially, economically, and better for services, rather just agreed with the right in saying immigration is baaad. Eg in UK immigrants pay 34% more tax then uk born, more violent crime from UK born, more contributions to economy, to innovation, etc, less strain on education and NHS because the majority are young working age and healthy, compared to UK born which for 20 years pay no tax, use nhs and education, take money for this plus benefits, adding to govt expenditure, unlike immigrants to pay into the system
I'm glad that you ask "What’s Driving It?" in your thumbnail because it answers itself. What's driving it is that politicians that DON'T get labelled far right can still earnestly ask that question, or they know the answer but refuse to touch that subject. They might be right that touching it will open a can or worms, but it's better to do so sooner rather than later.
I’m not sure why Alistair would not support the AfD taking government in Thuringia as they obtained about the same proportion of the vote as Labour achieved in the UK and have immediately started to govern as if they had the support of 90% of the people - no attempt at trying to govern on a consensus/consensual basis. I’m also not sure why neither Alistair nor Rory pointed out that while a German court said people were free to call Hocke a fascist, it specifically refused to make any decision of the substance of the case, i.e. the court did not say he is in fact a fascist. Essentially, it was a freedom of speech case, were people free to use an insult that has deep resonance in Germany. The court found that people were allowed to do what Alistair and Rory do throughout this podcast. They imply - at times state - that Farage is a racist and basically a fascist because of his association with hard right parties across Europe without providing any evidence of that, which would stand up in a British court.
The suppression of open dialogue has unintentionally pushed individuals towards extremist ideologies, as they feel ostracized and voiceless. A significant number of Germans harbour concerns about the effects of migration on their culture; however, voicing such concerns often leads to being labeled as racist or far-right. These individuals are not necessarily far-right; they simply feel overlooked and believe that their concerns are not just neglected but actively suppressed.
When a German or any European reaches for Nazi ideology “just trying express feeling overlooked and unheard” I think not listening to them was probably the right choice to begin with. They know what they are doing.
Why does the government waste money on an art collection? In Australia, we have Artbank, which invests in emerging artists and rents out art to government and private enterprise. The income means Artbank is self funding, and new artists are supported.
41:00 As one of the majority of Israelis who are against Netanyahu, I think Alistair got it quite right. Rory, also very knowledgeable, made one important mistake: those of us who have been demonstrating, those of us wearing, carrying, driving with yellow ribbons - we're part of what polls are showing is (at least) a two thirds majority supporting or calling for a ceasefire which would include painful steps - such as releasing many mass-murderers - in order to save those hostages who remain alive. This is the position also after the generals, the heads of the security services and Mossad and the (Likud) Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant. Netanyahu isn't listening, for the reasons Alistair stated. I'll add that my heart does go out to those innocent Gazans who have suffered so much. Like most Israelis I lay the blame squarely with those who launched the massacre on 7/10. Like most Israelis I am focused now on our hostages. We failed those six hostages who were murdered this week. We cannot fail those who are still alive. We need our hostages home! 🎗️
I went from being a good teacher to an outstanding teacher based on OFSTED reports. This was nonsense. When I was a good teacher I was taking all the most challenging pupils from schools rated as outstanding. I left my outstanding school to work with the pupils they had suspended. Outrageous when you think I worked in Special Schools which received extra funding & resources to meet the needs of those with learning difficulties.
There are no gains from the current situation regarding the ability for young people to work and study around Europe - it's a club 18-30 but with more long term benefits than the famous one. I gained so much back in the early 1990s from my year working in the Czech Republic and return trip to study there, and it is a sad day that we have made such choices so much harder for the current young generation.
Yh, honestly I love the idea of a scheme for 18-30 year olds but why stop with Europe? I can think of plenty of countries where it'd be a great for both the individuals and more broadly for our national ties to have such a scheme
Most summer schools I'm looking at are 2 week courses that cost 1000ish EUR not incl travel and board, its unaffordable especially if you want to go to Switzerland or Germany. Thank god Finland has cheaper summer schools
54:19 Rory misunderstands the position of teachers with regards to Ofsted. The idea that we oppose Ofsted because we want to be 'left alone to get on with things' and are 'suspicious of external inspectors' isn't accurate. Very few teachers are anti-accountability. Accountability is built into every aspect of the job, rightly so. Schools are constantly in a cycle of assessment and improvement. Teachers want inspections that work with them to support and aid this process of improvement to help them provide the best possible education for children. There are many ways in which Ofsted could be improved to better benefit children, families and schools. Getting rid of one word judgements is a step in the right direction but much more is needed.
Great to see the respect shown by Rory to Angela. She's normal and credible of the Labour group. Also a brilliant speaker, I enjoyed that leading episode.
Can you guys please talk about the 'Two Nice Jewish Boys' podcast controversy? It was all over Twitter recently, and it would be nice to see more mainstream acknowledgement.
Ofsted don't focus on teaching or discipline within schools and almost discourage it. A complete overhaul of how they measure shcools needs to be done. Loosing a star for expelling students who should be expelled is ridiculous.
The problem is is that there are two Germany's, one to the East (DDR), one to the West.(RDA) The problem of property ownership and integration of the two populations is still the key to a (post) modern Germany.
There is no nation without an ethnos who understand themselves as the inheritors and bearers of a civilization and tradition. A "postmodern" nation is an economic zone with an airstrip to be strip minned, stripped in and the natives inside strapped down until they cause enough of a mess they need to call intel agencies to clean up

Badly managed Immigration is the main problem everywhere because not only does it affect the cultural balance of a country and its communities but it also has a huge economic impact on jobs housing resources etc and therefore its hard to sugarcoat.
Spain has a relatively high opinion of immigrants and it's no surprise given their immigrants are mainly Latinos who speak the same language and have a very similar culture.
Yes I'm sure immigration is a big factor, when people are pissed off with the main stream parties and don't feel listened to, they start to show it in a number of ways, and voting for more extreme parties is one way. It's a warning shot to the main stream politicians, and probably suggests discontent in general, immigration is the most obvious.
I fully support immigration, particularly as declining birth rates mean we may not have enough taxpayers to support the social care needs of an ageing population, pay for healthcare, social programs etc. However, in Australia, there's an urgent need to expand social and affordable housing. The government must take a direct role in providing housing for those in need. In my work as a housing caseworker, supporting young people leaving state care, I've noticed that middle-income earners are occupying housing meant for low-income earners. This trend disrupts community cohesion, drives up housing prices and rents, and puts the most vulnerable at greater risk of homelessness. My extensive research and reports have shown that since the late 1990s, the government has overly relied on the private rental market. A stronger commitment to building more social and affordable housing is essential, especially if the government plans to rely on immigration for economic growth.
I agree…but one issue that is always missing from the discussion about how to manage immigrants from developing countries seeking to settle in Western countries is the centuries long, poorly managed interference of Western Countries in the development and governance of these countries through colonialism, war and real politik which led to many of the problems there in the first place. Perhaps finding ways to help and strengthen these countries so more people can thrive there and fewer people feel the need to escape would simultaneously decrease the number of people who want to emigrate to the West whilst correcting the problems that Western countries inadvertently created by their short-sighted, self-interested foreign policies.
1:00:38 Alastair and Rory you were asked for a balanced opinion on this issue. If you don’t understand the issue on Brasil be honest and just say you don’t know. Saying whether you are a judge or a politician and is okay to call out Elon is completely obfuscating that the Judge committed an alleged crime focused on people with a different political view to that of the judge. Can you take a moment to discuss a topic intelligently and provide a balanced opinion without a bias. If you want to criticise Elon on a view he has that you disagree with, educate the audience by showing WHY it is wrong, instead of dismissing it as an absurd conspiracy theory. The real attack is that a judge has asked musk to do something that is illegal - can you perhaps address that objectively. Don’t be a fool talking about something you have no idea about.
When you say that 6 hostages were murdered by Hamas, but that 40000 people have been killed, it gives the impression that the murders are a more serious matter than the 40 000 who were killed. And that the purpose of this genocide is to prevent a criminal coming to trial is even worse. It's time to stop providing Israel with cover and get them back behind the legal borders. Isn't that obvious? Where's Tony? His peace keeping experience should be very valuable at this point, surely?

I don't think any of you commenting about 'Two Nice Jewish Boys' understand how YT algorithms work, or podcasting in general. The algorithim cares nothing for your outrage. It cares about NUMBERS. Using the 'report abuse' feature is one thing, but every other form of digital activity is beneficial to the YT channel in question, regardless of the POV behind that activity. Consider what every podcaster says at the close of nearly every podcast: 'share, like, subscribe, comment.' Each of you are fulfilling at least half of those requests, right here, in this comment section. I 'd never heard of TNJB, so I looked at their traffic data, and as of three weeks ago most Northern Irish comedians had more subscribers (and a bigger overall digital footprint) than TNJB. Now, however, they're enjoying an 'outrage surge' brought to them by viewers like you. And you want to compund your mistake by insisting the biggest podcast in the UK, with twenty times more subscribers, talk about them? Why? To soothe the offense you've taken? Grow up. There are podcasts out their that say vile things about Jews, et al, and I wouldn't dream of giving them the exposure TRIP could provide them. You claim TNJB are doing the same, only they're saying vile things about Palestinians. Then my advice would be not to act on their behalf by raising their brand awareness, whether IRL, or online, but especially online because discussing their podcast (even if you're criticizing it) services their interests (i.e. their ads based revenue potential). I don't know who coined the phrase 'the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference' but I know they were a coder. You're going to have to decide what's more important - your outrage, or having your favorite talking heads commiserate in that outrage, because I PROMISE YOU that youtube's algorithm has decided which one is more important to it.
Google have a subsidiary called Google Jigsaw which claims to have a role in content moderation. As in all these things, because they are American we take on trust how & what they moderate. There is no oversight, whatsoever, by international bodies, national bodies or NGO’s. This suggests to me that online it is not all numbers. My experience on Twitter and how that changed over time from self curated to algorithm generated content supports this. The online world would be better if it was bot free and either not moderated but led by numbers or moderated by approved bodies, not self elected elites.

the Left today is more left than ever during my lifetime. 30 years ago some of their politics would have been unthinkable and some of the things they say unsayable. The center has shifted to the left, so that a political void on the right has opened. But also the center-right parties have changes. In the 1980ies the doctrine of Franz Josef Strauss was, that the CDU/CSU has to also cover the conservative right, even the a bit nasty patriotic right, so that there is no constitutional room any other party right of them. Helmut Kohl has still respected this doctrine, Angela Merkel abandoned it complete, even ridiculing the conservative right wing of her own party.

My question to you is that how else do you solve the shortfall in labour. There are record amounts of british people on long term sick. A 1/5th of britains population is over the age of 65, sucking up far more resources than the rest, often needing carers who also need to be paid on the taxpayers dime. A large amount of people on benefits or otherwise not engaged in the economy. Meanwhile we're not having enough babies or training enough of our own people So who else is going to pay for all that if not young men and women of working age from abroad ??? It used to be EU immigrants but since brexit...many of them have gone back and new ones aren't coming ? So who??? There comes a point where it's no use moaning about loss of culture or london not being English any more..this is cold hard economics.
The problem with schools is the under regulated and semi privatised academy system. Schools need to be under the control of local authorities and they need to be funded correctly. There are layers of unnecessary managers running these awful academy chains.
The main point about the original ban on smoking was that it was a ban in enclosed spaces. It was mainly meant to protect the health of people in those spaces. Banning smoking outdoors is simply the politics of spite there is no health implication for non smokers of whom I am one. Stop nanny state policies and we’ll all get along better Alastair.
If tobacco was discovered now it would be illegal. Secondhand smoke is also a real thing. I am a smoker and I strongly agree with the ban on outdoors smoking, and really I hope that it represents a move towards making smoking entirely illegal.

@@anotheryoutubeuser142 I'm not advocating for an immediate ban, but I hope it is a direction of travel. I think a gradual policy implementation would be a good idea. It's already been happening - think about smoking being banned from indoor public places, the unsexyfication of cigarette packaging, the constant increases in taxes on tobacco. Cigarette smokers are not only stupid (yes, I include myself in this) but also put a huge strain on the NHS while also exposing non-smokers to their secondhand smoke. I'm not necessarily suggesting all nicotine-based products being banned, but cigarettes are awful things. Sure, there would be a black market, but I suspect we would see a dramatic decrease in the number of people smoking if it were to be made illegal.
It seems obvious to me what's driving the far right. Its immigration. There is a significant portion of the electorate that feels strongly about the need for more restrictive immigration policies. For a long time, the major political parties deemed immigration restrictions to be an unacceptable topic for discussion. And so, the electorate gradually shifted to the formerly fringe parties that were willing to champion this issue.
@@TheKraken5360 what are you talking about? Immigration has been a topic that has been discussed for all of my life. It's not taboo. How are each of the three making your life worse? What are your proposed solutions?
@@marmadukesandwich I don’t know the perfect way to craft immigration policy. But, I think it’s clear that a significant number of people feel strongly that immigration levels have been too high in recent history. For a long time, this subject has been verboten by most of the mainstream parties. Even when parties paid lip service to limiting immigration, they often failed to do anything substantive. So, clearly, people are migrating to the few parties that seem serious about limiting the inflow of people. If a belief is widely held, it does not go away when the major parties treat it as a taboo. Like it or not, that’s democracy. If the mainstream parties want to stop the rise of the far right, at least one of them needs to convince people that they will seriously pursue restricting immigration.
@@TheKraken5360 Yes, you've made that point. Do you have any suggestions to offer ether in terms of strategic approach to economic migration, or in tactical terms towards funding and managing asylum claims in a timely and cost-effective manner?
Simple. The failure of the centre left and centre right to do anything radical in office is driving people to extreme alternatives. Also our failure of immagination to create something different from Capitalism.

Re: a rise in home schooling, this may also be linked to shockingly poor SEN provision. My child has SEN, and is very lucky to have had this recognised by the council a few years ago. Now though, with the council’s SEN department failing, they are simply refusing to recognise any other children as having SEN - refusing even to do an assessment of the child to determine that. Even for children who have medical diagnoses, and who their (mainstream) school is saying need to go to a special school, they won’t be assessed. Eventually the school states that they can’t meet the child’s needs anymore, and the child can’t get a place at a special school because the council hasn’t recognised their SEN, and so the parents have no choice but to home school them.

It is absolutely amazing that they can discuss the rise of anti-immigration parties without bringing immigration into the explanation lol
You do understand that anybody who criticises immigration policy is labelled a far right racist, don’t you?
That would require the centrists/liberals in other countries to accept that a reduction in immigration levels is necessary, and that regulations on immigration are necessary. In Denmark, the liberals/centrists accepted this. In contrast, in other countries, the liberals/centrists refuse to accept this and instead they gaslight their political opponents for talking about immigration as an issue.
Campbell and his ilk are driving this by shouting down any moderate discussion on such issues as racist!!!!
The left wing does not understand: To the people political parties are a means to an end:
It is the will of the people (essentially in ALL Western nations) to reduce illegal immigration and also any immigration from majority muslim countries. Full stop.

No.
Centrism is usually a term used by people to manipulate you into thinking their the sensible ones, and anything you say is wrong
Thank you! Absolutely right.

A friend of mine went to work in Germany no problem, stop listening to the doom mongers on the left.
To put a few things into a broader picture, from personal experience:
What I saw over the past couple of months in Eastern Germany is a mix of a few phenomena leading to the right wing uprise: 1) Yes, Eastern Germany often feels left behind.
Some useful information. Thanx. Kind of par for the course that I'd find this out from a comment and not a commentator.

Because our politicians aren't listening to genuine concerns of ordinary Europeans
Concerns created by the right wing press and right wingers, without a proper challenge from the left:
The problem is that the left end the centre didn't grow some balls and say, actually, immigration is really good for us socially, economically, and better for services, rather just agreed
with the right in saying immigration is baaad.
Deporting Afghan criminals? What’s wrong with that?

I'll add that my heart does go out to those innocent Gazans who have suffered so much. Like most Israelis I lay the blame squarely with those who launched the massacre on 7/10. When I was a good teacher I was taking all the most challenging pupils from schools rated as outstanding. I left my outstanding school to work with the pupils they had suspended.

So I'm passionately left but listening to these podcasts I've got a lot of time for Rory Stewart he says lots of thoughtful things
Badly managed immigration started in 1492, so your obversation is a bit late...
You splash the word Genocide around like tomato sauce …good on everything. Apartheid is another word you enjoy using. A Syrian/Russian approach to the Gaza problem would mirror the S.O.P for Aleppo, Grozny, Damascus. Death toll in the hundreds of thousands without a word of complaint from you.
It's outrage that drives the numbers.
Vile things? Or calling out the 72+ years of grift, gaslighting, & violence? I have to check it out…🤔

the Left today is more left than ever during my lifetime.

There is never any excuse for the far right & don't let people like Douglas Murray & Nigel Farage make you believe differently.
Meanwhile we're not having enough babies or training enough of our own people
So who else is going to pay for all that if not young men and women of working age from abroad ???

@@benw582 remind us all, how has the war on illegal drugs worked out? Did criminalising these things stop world wide production and trafficking? The answer, unsurprisingly, is no.
If you cannot learn the mistakes of the past then you are doomed to repeat them. Trying to control people's habits only drives them underground and further away from the help that (presumably) you think these people need.

When the left became right with Tory Blair , where could the right go if their politics were the same . Nigel Farage or extreme right .
