I'm a violist, I've been playing for 9 years and it's a beautiful instrument, a little advice is to always feel the music yes maybe the music is hard sometimes but keep trying because you never know where you can turn out
I Am a 78 yr old who took up the bowed instruments six years ago. wihile I do still play the violin my favorite is the viola. I literally swoon (I am 6ft and 240 lbs) Vibrato is a challenge for me,however, The Swan and is to be my first attempt at playing with vibrato. Your rendition is a wonderful guide for me, Thank you .
John Lyons, that's fantastic! I started learning to playing music at age 38. I did my research and decided on a viola. 5 yrs fast forward, I am playing 10+ concerts a year with orchestras, chamber groups and quartets. Music has literally changed my life. Keep it up!
Marijke plays Well, I do love the violas deep classic sound, but the violin gets more parts in orchestral pieces. But it's sound can be very pitchy if not played correctly.
Firstly take note that viola mainly reads alto clef, not treble. But other than that, I'd say to really get the basics right on the violin and secure both left and right hand technique before considering a switch to viola and further developing technique there ((actually simply because violin teachers are the majority)) My own teacher has been asking me if I would consider switching because I did play a viola in an ensemble recently and she really liked the sound I pulled out of it but it's a really hard decision because I want to finish violin grade 8 (ABRSM) and have a sense of completion but at the same time I know I'm kind of in the right place to switch now ((before too much time passes by and I forget how to do stuff...)) OH and I really love both instruments so 😕
S Chan and understand if you switch to the viola... everyone makes fun of you because violas are discriminated against😂😂... jk jk but I actually somehow chose viola over violin, and alto clef isn't that bad, I'm actually better at reading it then I am in treble. I'm also a pianist so I can read in 3 chefs, so like I'm always switching between chefs; but if you can play violin and viola it's awesome, you get to be in the front and in the back, I eventually want to start violin lessons after I'm at a decent level in viola.
Marijke plays Trust me, viola is extremely hard to play, with almost three years playng, i still sound scrating ;u; (PS: i dont speak english, so, Sorry)

this is so beautiful, i find myself coming back to myself every 1-2 years just to be able to listen to this wonderful rendition that she has put on for us. as someone who played the viola for around 4 years, this video really kept me going and had me believing i’d be able to play as good as her someday. i haven’t even touched a viola in almost a year, i didn’t intentionally give up of course, but i wish i would have watched this video a bit more, and maybe that would have helped.

such a smooth vibrato !! everyone that plays a string instrument must learn the swan at one point, its so beautiful :) (I play viola/violin) . [viola is better than violin bc it sounds so mellow + alot of orchestras need violas ]
Just curious, what is the quick fix? I've started learning the viola as an adult but learned violin as a child and the treble clef is still burned into my brain!

I play on a 44 cm (17.3 in) duplicate of a ‚da Salo', one of Roger Graham Hargrave's so-called 'labours of love' - and I am definitely in love with it! Do you also play such a big instrument? I would be surprised as not many do!
Most violists choose to play on smaller instruments because of ergonomics and repetitive injury issues. But yeah, larger violas have an irreplaceable sound.
I play on a 17.1 in and theres nothing quite like the projection and tone quality of a big viola. I enjoyed your interpretation of this piece and your viola sounds wonderful.
Lovely playing, really enjoyed it. May I say that the jump up the octave in the second half should be reconsidered and on such a wonderful viola it misses an opportunity to show the lower register instead at the end.
