Thank you so much. Times are hard and if it hasn’t been one thing it’s been another. We for sure thought our washer was broken but after watching the video my husband was able to find the issue! We were so relieved that it was this, a $7 fix vs a new washer
That is what I love to hear 😊👍

Glad it helped!
Hi Scott, thanks for the vid, it's GREATLY appreciated. This is exactly what the problem/fix was for my washer. BRAVO!!
Thanks Brad,
You’re very welcome 😊
With times being so tough I was heartbroken I couldn’t get my sister a Christmas gift and when she said her washer was broken I found this video almost immediately. It was inexpensive and meant a lot to her. I’m incredibly grateful you shared this knowledge with us.
I love that.
You’re a great brother.
Merry Christmas 🎄
Wow!!! As a woman watching this i must give this guy 2 high 5's for the most informative, easy to understand and follow instructions i have ever watched!!! Best job ever!!!
That is Awesome Francesca❤️👍😊
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel thank you i wish you had videos on how to fix anything!!! You would have made any subject easy to learn,if you had been a teacher!!!
Hey! Never done this before so I’m very greatful. It would have been helpful if you would’ve shown each step putting it back on. Thank you so much I just watched it and tried to do it backwards putting it on lol.
Great idea! Stephanie 😊👍❤️
Just fixed my mom’s washer thanks to you! 20+ year old Whirlpool Inglis still going strong. A word of caution to those newbies like me, DO NOT accidentally put your new motor coupling on the water pump side of the motor. Ended up having to use a 3 jaw puller to remove it.
Thanks so much Jake👍😊
Thank you so much for this video you have saved us from buying a new washer. I was even able to fix this myself with your clear and precise instructions!!
Nicely done Tia👍👍👍
Great video. I have never meet a appliance guy with a Rolex. You know he must be good at what he does.
Thanks David,
It was a gift for 20 years of teaching.
Thanks Scott!! I was able to get my washer up and running in about 30 mins after the part was delivered. Your video made it soooo easy. Thanks again for saving me big bucks :)
Awesome,
Thanks Cynthia👍😊
Scott - YES!!! like many others your straightforward, informative video really helped me out! Saved me lots of money and time. Thank You Very Much!
Thanks so much Ken
This did the trick! Thank you for your expertise. The video and explanation was just what I needed. Part number too. Cheers!
This is the easiest video of this job. Thanks for the video
Awesome,
Thanks Jeremiah👍😊
Thanks for the informative video Scott, it was just what I needed. The fix is easy, the hardest part is getting the cover back on the washing machine.
Thanks again!
Thanks Bob😊
Thank you for this informative video! It helped tremendously! I’m not even handy and was able to do everything you said and now my washer is back working again! You’re a life savor my friend! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
That is Awesome news👍
Thank you😊
Thanks for the video! Got my washer fixed and amazed my husband who was ready to give up.
Thank you! Your video gets right to the point and I appreciate that! This was very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!👍😊
I am here looking for info and hope that I can do it. Your comment encouraged me
I followed this fellow’s video and had the broken coupler off of the transmission shaft within 10 minutes. Thank you for this great and easy explanation. Parts are ordered, if it goes back together half as easy I’ll be tickled pink - and either way saved $150 service call.
Nice job Jay👍
Thanks for the part number. Very simple job
Nice job Jim👍
Because of your video I saved a ton of money and fixed it myself. Thank you.
Thanks so much Joan
Thank you so much for this! Mine was a slightly different model, but still able to replace it myself!
Excellent 😊👍
Thanks for showing it running with the problem. The noise helped confirm. I had a look at another video and the coupler had disintegrated, I had a quick look underneath mine and the coupler seemed fine, I tried to spin it and again it looked fine. Having another look after seeing your video, I can see that it's actually cracked and is broken, part ordered. Hopefully that's the only issue, the agitator seems to be fairly locked up.
Hi Scott, I've replaced the coupler, the clutch and the lid washer switch. My machine still won't spin or agitate. It does drain. Any suggestions other than scrapping it? Thanks
Can you send that same question to my email at: scottthefixitguy@yahoo.com
You're the best, man! I have no experience with repairs and I'm too poor to just buy a new one. Five dollars and a couple of days in shipping later, got it up and running again. Good stuff!
Thanks for making this repair so easy Scott!!!
Thank you for the video
It feels good saving money
Very glad to help 😊
Thank u so much for helping looking at plenty videos this the one
Thanks Valeria😊
Thanks for this yeah, the motor was a little bit difficult to get back on but blocking it up putting the bottom bracket on first and using pliers for the top and leaning it back helped. Great video. I love this great puzzle.

It’s just $5.00
worked perfectly for a different but similar model of whirlpool washer, thank you!
Awesome,
Thank you😊
Mate thanks so much for the video and easy to follow instructions, machine fixed and working a treat. Total cost $19.75 AUD....literally saved me over $1000 for a replacement machine, I recon this one now has another 20 years left in it!!
I really wish maybe you would have included all the reassembly for us non handy types. I’m pretty sure I have the same washer 80 series and I’m dumb so I need it beginning to end.

Can't thank you enough!! You saved us!
So happy to help😊👍
Excellent video Scott,
My whirlpool is 1983 model. Does the frame slide out the same way as seen in your video? Tonight the machine stopped agitating and spinning. Prior for many weeks it would agitate with a cracking sound, and mostly only agitate in one direction. This problem would be made worse when machine was fully loaded, and improved with a very light load. Does it sound like the motor coupler was partially damaged and now it completely broke?
Thanks much for your easy to understand video!!
I changed the coupler . Machine does not start on its own. It starts if I go underneath and move the coupler forward or backward. If I lift the lid , it stops but does not start back on its own. I have to help it.
The motor might be worn out. Can you try changing the motor capacitor ? They’re pretty cheap.
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel - Thanks ! I changed the capacitor but the problem remains. The motor hums and works when I assist it by going underneath and actually turning turning the coupler (motor) clockwise or anti-clockwise. It gets to the end of the cycle but does not start or if I lift the lid it quite rightly stops but does not restart. My next move is to change the pump. I notice a drip of water coming through where it fits onto the shaft on the motor , when I had the pump off
Great video , i fixed it yayy! i only spend 5$ on a new coupler.
Nice job baby girl,
That is not a super easy repair.
Very impressive😊👍
Thanks for the video!! Our washer works great now!
Thanks Edward
thank you, very helpful video!
Thanks for the video! $7 later our washer is back in business.
Very good Katie😊
Thanks for the video! I learned "trim plates". I learned how the ("clips"?) are inserted that keep the ("body"?) onto the chassis. I reached under the body to remove the clips not knowing that I was loosening the body. They make a racket when you push them off while reaching underneath. Any chance of buying THE REPAIR MANUAL? NOT the installation manual. A while back I had a different Whirlpool and one day it filled with water and then stopped working. I used a garden hose to siphon the water out and bought the Whirlpool that I have now. Prior to that I paid for an online appliance repair course and the person only said that a washer "is a tub with a hole in it". Then he shut down his site and I was out of money.
Some people have no integrity
Thank you! A big help -all fixed!
Hey Scott, thanks for the great video. In one hour I was able to extend the life of my 20 year old washing machine for only a few bucks.
Nice job Chuck.
Mine lasted 22 years
Phenomenal video!!!
Thanks so much 👍😊👍😊
always check the pump for "the sock"
Upending my machine I could see the couple had broken. In the process of disassembly and replacement. The machine was in the place when I moved here and it nameplate is missing so the model number and age are unknown. But it is similar to the machine being worked on here. Now it is a matter of the the coupler fail from old age or a locked up transmission. Will find out tomorrow if the works or the old transmission is trashed.
Found the coupler rubber center came out fine. The two plastic sides of the coupler fell apart leaving metal centers stuck on the motor and transmission shafts. Looked like trying to pry out with a screwdriver would damage the bearing cap on the motor. Went to Advance Auto and bought a small $10 rear puller made mostly of sheet metal, lightweight use. Worked on motor fine and barely just fit to pull out the one on the transmission shaft. Tired now, maybe finish tomorrow. Maybe not, no wife to nag me and how many clean clothes does a bachelor need anyway.
I forget to add. To reach the part stuck on the transmission shaft needed to remove motor mount. Just two bolts.
Okay, coupler replaced and washer working but.....
I just woulds not go back together as shown in this video or any of the others.
Before the solution the problems - - - -
Putting the motor back was largely skipped in the video. Trying to get the plastic prongs on the motor part of the coupler lined up with the slots in the rubber connector between the coupler halves is remarkably difficult. There is no way to see if they are lined up and shafts of both halves spin freely. The motor weighs about 15 pounds and holding it one handed at an awkward angle while rotating the pump end of the motor shaft is made difficult because you cannot see if they line up. I managed to get it plugged into the two couplers by feel and luck one time. But it popped back out as I was trying to snap the motor upper holding bracket in place. Never got that to happen again.
Additional difficulties are the motor holding bracket keep flopping in the way and snagging the motor. Same for the draining pump. Tried holding the upper motor back in place with twine and magnets. It and the lower bracket kept snagging the motor just enough to stop placement onto the two coupler halves. Tied the draining pump back with some twine also.
Giving it thought I decided that gravity was against me and decided to make it work for me.
Pulled the washer out an into a clear open space, laid it down on it's back with support to keep it from crushing the input and outflow hoses. Now that I had a better view I could see that the coupler half on the shaft to the transmission was not fully seated so seated same with hammer and socket.
Now the motor alignment with the two coupler halves is better seen. Pulled the top motor mount bracket out of the way with large magnet. Gravity just pulled the motor in place. Then it was put the rest back together, push washer back into it's place and connect hoses to input and discharge at the wall and plug it in. Runs fine.
If it breaks again will put it out of it's and mine misery and get a replacement.
Would this cause the motor to make a buzzing sound (like it is trying to spin but can't)? At first glance the couplers looked fine, but this video has me second guessing myself. I really don't want the motor to be bad.
Can you send me a video of the washer during spin?
Scottthefixitguy@yahoo.com
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel Thanks for helping me find the capacitor issue!
perfect.
Thank you😊
If my agitator spins freely by hand in either direction and I hear the motor turning, could it just be the dog ears and not motor coupler?
Yep,
Very good. Will it spin?
Mine will spin if I give it a manual push. I made a video about it. Please help!
I have the same problem
Did you get your problems fixed ?
If the motor coupler is broke will the washing machine still spin
It will only fill and drain.
Mine looks very different it's circular is that just because mine might be older?
Can you send a picture of that bent stem to:scottthefixitguy@yahoo.com
Great video, but, for me washer drains but doesnt agitate or spin.. couplers are in pretty good shape, washer just hums, and still no movement.. recently the pump had a sock clog.. cleared it then this non spin/agitate problem occurred.. any idea?
following...have the same issue!
I have this washer, 12 years old, fills with water then does absolutely nothing, no hum or whine. Bypassed lid switch to test, bypassed pressure switch, tested start capacitor (holds voltage), pulled water pump completely out and nothing stuck inside, motor spins freely. Wouldn't the washer hum if this is the problem? Otherwise stuck at determining motor or timer to be the cause.
Sounds like the timer
Will that part be part of the problem if my clothes are wetter than before?
For us it was. The motor couldn't do the spin cycle because of the broken coupler.
I bet it took a long time to put the motor back on
It’s not too bad, just need to hold up the motor with one hand while the other guides the motor into place.
good vid
HELP!!! My 2005 kenmore elite top loader spins but takes forever to get up to full speed and doesn’t get the clothes dry enough, so I always have to run the spin cycle 3 or more additional times no matter how big or small the load is. Any idea? Could it be a bad clutch, faulty motor capacitor, bad bearings, or weak motor possibly? Every google search leads me to nowhere.
Most likely a worn out clutch.
Most likely a worn out clutch.
Scottthefixitguy thank you kind sir, I’ll give that a whirl as soon as this coronavirus pandemic bs is done with.
Scott I need your help!! My washing machine does not agitate correctly and I already changed my dogs in the middle of the agitator. But it still on goes back and forth a tiny bit doesn't even make the clothes move...what do I do?
I imagine you tightened that bolt down tight again👍
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel yes I did. Did I make it too tight? Is something else broke?
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel Scott I'm struggling with this washer I'm trying to find my drive belt
I recently had this problem. I replaced the lid switch and this motor coupler. It still will not agitate or drain. =/
There’s a good chance there’s something caught in the water pump that’s locking up the motor.
Just need to remove the water pump and look for a sock or hair tie that’s caught there
My washer wont spin or agitate but the coupler is not broken, what's the next culprit to investigate?
Do you hear any noise when it’s supposed to agitate? Maybe a slight hum?
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel it's just very loud, and I can see the motor spinning but it wont agitate.
Yes it hums pretty consistently
Easier to do with washer on its back
I just changed mine AND IT WON'T WORK still.. can u pls tell me what else I can look at
Do you hear any noise when you set it to spin?
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel I hear I hear the motor or trying to work... I took the part off and replace it THE COUPING and it won't spin
Can it agitate but not spin?
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel neither. It COMPLETEly stopped
Can you give me any other ideas of what it might be
Mine agitates periodically! Could the part be going?
Can you contact me at this link: calendly.com/scottthefixitguy/advice-for-fixing-your-appliance
This looks like the problem I'm having.
Thanks Sandra,
Just need a new motor coupler.
Coupler, dogs, and it's working like new
Great video! I just fixed mine! Thank you! Feel free to visit my channel too.
