Nice vdo. Great panel. My insight as an audience (with out any BTS knowledge).
Few things that play key role when copied/inspired/plagiarized:
1. Content exposure to majority of the demographics
2. How well the copied content is integrated with current project scope
3. How well the original content is handled
4. Ethical responsibility to mention the origin (of thought/content)
Expanding on above:
1. Majority of demographics are not privy to the original content - if it is from a different country (next gen would be more aware). There is no harm in reproducing to a different demographics with local flavoring. For example: a dish tasted at a restaurant/someone’s house can be recreated at your home with your tadka and masala to please your palate.
2. Just because the original is ice you cannot integrate into your project with out context. It has to blend with the situations and should not look out of place. Creator should own the content and has to use it in such a way that the progression looks natural.
3. As discussed in the vdo, emotions should not be affected. In some cases original and copied might have opposite emotional impact. If the emotions feel organic then copy has been handled well.
4. Ethically we r responsible to mention the origin. It doesn’t make one smaller if the original is acknowledged.
In conclusion:
You are smart if you can create something but your are smarter if you can use someone’s experience and take it from there.
I’ve a counter for the baahubali lion king parallel.
Tbh the first time I watched baahubali, I was like they just recreated Krishna bhagavatam. Think abt it, the story follows similar beats.
A kid is born to a couple in captivity, he’s saved by a parent like figure crossing a river, he is brought by foster parents, he re discovers and takes revenge by killing his uncle and liberating his parents. These were the general beats. Then the lion king comparisons came.
Now can we say that lion king(which is anyway a copy of Kim a the white lion) is inspired from Krishna bhagavatam?
The prodigal son returns is a plot as old as time. So can’t exactly call it a copy of lion king

From a common audience point of view, people usually don't care about plagiarism in youtube cause he/she will only check whether that particular video is entertaining or not.
But when it comes to movies, people put some effort(travel, ticket price etc.,) to watch movies in theatre. Also there will be some curiosity about a movie because of Songs, Teasers, Trailers, Promotional Content etc.,
So, we start complaining about plagiarism in movies.
Example : Same kind of memes ni various pages post chestayi, we never complain who posted it 1st. But, when we see meme references in movies, we'll be like : ee matram manam insta reels lo chuskolema?
Rajamouli admitted he copied a few scenes from which he was heavily inspired, But he took that as a challenge since BB2
That's the reason we have one of the most original Blockbusters in world cinema: RRR

So, some scenes(part of the story) of RRR are inspired(copied) from Apocalypto(The begining Tiger scene), The Patriot(Rebelling againt the british), Ben-Hur(Frindship part of the movie, The handshake in the logo is taken diretly from this movie).
