I love my black widows over my prismacolor but the downfall of black widow is you can't just go get individual color replacement where as prisma you can go to your local art supply store like I do and grab another black, orange and red. Hopefully black widow gets to that point where I can even plan ahead and order those individual colors I go through faster
I love the differences between the two pencils. I always wanted to try the black widow pencils hmmmm its def on my list

I love my Black Widows and I love my Prismacolors!! This was a great comparison with a great subject!! I thought the comparison was done really well and I appreciate that you brought up the names because they don't always tell what a color looks like (in the Black Widow sets).

Yeah, the names are interesting. They are certainly fun, but not always helpful :D I find that now, coloring with widows, I don't look at the names or even which set it came from (just a pile of widow pencils now). Instead, I grab something that kinda looks like the color that i want and scribble with it on scrap paper. If I like it, I go with it, if I don't I move on.

As a beginner I just might get a pack of 130 of shuttle art pencils, I need an upgrade from noris pencils.

Thank you so much for this. I've been a primarily Prismacolor user for over 20 years...and still have an old set from when they were Berols. You have convinced me that I'm going to love my recent purchase...now for them just to get here.

Love this comparison. I have both sets and love them both. I'm glad you explained the difference between dark to light and light to dark between the two different pencils. That is wonderful to know. I shared this video with my grandson who also has both sets and needed to know this information. Thank you so much

Great review and comparison. I have both brands, full sets of both and I store both brands together sorted by color family and use them together all the time. I think both brands compliment each other in different ways. I think Prisma will always be my "go to" pencil but I do love the Black Widows also. Well, I love ALL my pencils actually but definately I think I use those 2 brands the most

Great review Lisa! I own all of the Black Widow sets but did not feel confident using them and kept going back to my Prismas which I know so well. The fact that I can use my Prismas with the Black Widows is a bonus and I like the tip about going light to dark with the BW. Thank you...very useful tips.

So I'm just getting into the coloring world, and I've been trying out different pencils..I have a favorite budget set which is supposed to be an oil based.. I decided to get prismacolor for color alongs..but the quality of the pencils left them in their case and me barely doing color alongs..they were always breaking or I was having to sharpen all the time..I finally got Black Widows and I was amazed the first time pencil to paper..so smooth and buttery..like a crayon almost.. well conclusion..prismacolors are getting returned and I'm getting the other blackwidow sets. Blackwidows are definitely going to be my Wax pencil
AWESOME LOVE THIS IMAGE. I'm not sure if you mentioned this but everything works well on Strathmore Toned Paper, I found the Widows ok on other paper but sometimes feeling overly oily or something.
Ahh, interesting. I've only tries in on Strathmore grey, white, and sketch so far. Will experiment further.
I fell in love with my Black Widow pencils this summer. I’m a diehard Prismacolor user but found the Black Widows could do some things that the Prismacolors can’t. Sometimes the Prismacolors are too soft for what I’m working on, so the Black Widows work better on those pieces. I like it that Black Widows are vibrant too. They aren’t hard & muted like Verithins are. I have all of the Black Widows sets (they have a newer one that I haven’t used yet). Both of these pencil brands are wonderful!

There is a color chart for Black Widows that lays them out like Prismas. I used it to put them in my notebook in color order.

oh yes, of course, you CAN match colors, but my point was, there's more than one way to get a certain effect. For instance to match the skin tones on this piece, I didn't match pencils, I matched the outcomes of blending totally different combinations of pencils. So, getting a yellow ochre isn't limited to matching it to a cobra yellow or something, in the other set. There are at least 10 other ways to get that same color with different combinations, and that's often a stronger result. And there are more than enough colors in both sets to achieve the same results.

Thank you for this. I was looking for a good brand of colour pencils without breaking the bank. I found the standard black widow set on sale online for $10 here in Australia.They haven't arrived yet, so I just wanted to know about them. I usually use graphite, but I miss having colour. So I was considering including coloured pencils in my artwork, but I'd only be happy if they can be blended and somewhat layered. I'm not really into realism I like bolder stuff, lol. ✨🌸✨
Oh cool. You’re gonna get hooked on Widows. I did. Pretty much everything I do in color now is with Widows.

I recently came across the brand black widow on amazon, and I was looking for prismacolor colored pencils. But they were too expensive for me to afford at the moment and I’m glad to see that black widow is an affordable and good brand! I will definitely be buying those💕

I've been reluctant to buy the Black Widows since I already have a full set of Prismas & Poly's and then some other one off's I've purchased at the big art store. I might try the skin tone sets now though. I really hated the look of the Black Widows, I don't want to have to look at the tiny color name to see what color it is. I find that a big fail for a COLORED pencils. I want to see the pretty.
The skin tone set is definitely worth the trouble of reading the names or getting used to looking at the tips. I don't mind it at all anymore.

Are the black widow vibrant like polychromos or the caran d’ache
They are, but I'm actually over them by now. Check out some of my more recent videos for my Prismacolor work and reviews.
HI! I am working on a very detailed art project where I am utilizing a lot of my my Prismacolor Verithin pencils. I am using them where the items are small, and where I also do not want them to blend, as the Verithins don't blend well which is the desired result. The set is only a 36 piece set and I found myself wishing the set has more colors in it. Can you suggest any other pencils that would work the same as verithins, and offer more colors? Again I am looking for a hardcore pencil with vibrant colors for fine details that does not blend.
I'd go with Castle Arts then.
