My Dad LOVED Be Bop Deluxe and used to play his records. I was really young, like seven or eight, and this is like 15 years ago. I started searching for his music recently, and ran across all these videos. I have to say, he is astonishingly brilliant. An artist in every sense of the word. My Dad laughs because I talk about him like he's a recent phenomenon - MY find. LOL!
Bill Nelson's creativity is amazing!! I sort of lost track of him post Be Bop Deluxe and just in the last few years rediscovered what he's been up to and have been stunned at his continued work!! His playful sense of retro pop scifi is so much fun!! His musicianship is tremendous, his guitar playing is transcendant!!!
I'd say Bill Nelson is probably one of the biggest unsung heroes of the music world over the last 40+ years. Musical genius in some respects, pretty much ticks all the boxes; singer, songwriter, musican/guitarist/Multi instrumentalist, producer. He has an amazing work ethic when it comes to releasing music and even though he hasn't enjoyed the mainstream success of his Be-Bop Deluxe days this hasn't diminished his musical output and the best thing to come out of Wakefield!
Vastly underrated as a musician & guitarist by the media. Not however, by his army of fans who have religiously followed him over the decades. A great talent.
I never really thought of it until now, but watching this makes you realize that Bill was probably the pioneer of Modern Romantic Music. Way before the 90's
Coppertunes You're spot on, she did marry Jobbers however having seen both BBD & Skids in full flight in this era I think we can forgive a little possible "nepotism" - PS. MF is a f**king bit wooden in this interview and that's UNFORGIVABLE ;-)
I guess this is around the time when he made "Chimera" - the rear cover photo on that mini-album is staged in the very same room, featuring Bill sitting at his desk, holding his guitar and seeing through some of his drawings.
He is looking at tarot cards, there is a Cocteau book on the desk and he is holding an obscure guitar like instrument. I wish he would mention he was copying the Yellow magic orchestra at this time.
I can not tell you the amount of times I found myself putting this video on repeat at exactly 1:46 during my college years, love this track by him and to see it live its even better. Can someone please help me find this? Was it ever released, if so what album is it from so I can purchase it? Thank you ❤
It like he's playing around with the track 'Hard Facts From The Fiction Department' which features xylophone. It's not exactly the same though, sounds almost early techno.
wow, this is enlightening-I never liked his post BeBop work, but I get it a little more now-it is still nothing like those first 5 or 6 albums-those are the best in rock music ever,in my opinion-really the epitomy of the ART.Ive always said that Bebop mixed art with music.not many bands ever did that.maybe Queen.King Crimson, but they werent really rock music
Be Bop Deluxe is the greatest band most folks never heard. Bill’s solo stuff is hit or miss but I love guitar so his later is little too plastic for me tastes..
Where Bill is playing marimba sounds like an early version of "Hard Facts from the Fiction Department" (from The Two - Fold Aspect - UK version, on the second disc - Confessions of a four -track mind).
He's not only the most underated guitarist I know of the man is multitalented! Thanks for posting.
jeff w. Agreed! Totally!

Amazing artist...my two favourite albums(post BBD) 'Love that whirls ' and 'Quit dreaming...' been a part of my regular playlist for over 35 years.
THANK YOU!!! A brilliant period of Bill Nelsons life captured, thank you again for uploading the interview.
Thanks for the upload. Loved seeing Nelson's home studio.
Wow! Thank you for posting this. It's pure magic to see him at work in this era. He's still a true hero, still making great music to this day.

A musical genius and probably the greatest guitarist of all time
Great to see this after all these years - fantastic post
A little gem...thanks for sharing.
I never really thought of it until now, but watching this makes you realize that Bill was probably the pioneer of Modern Romantic Music. Way before the 90's
Getting a glimpse inside Bill's Echo Observatory home recording studio was fantastic!
Used to be bills gardener as a kid.. It was a pleasure to work in such a beautiful alice in wonderland themed garden.
been searching youtube for years for this clip. not quite how i remembered it but thanks for posting sunsetz777
Bill Nelson is what's commonly known as a genius.
Tender Is The Night and Flaming Desire are genius tracks IMO.
Connection.... Bill Nelson produced The Skids second album Days in Europa. The Skids singer married Mariella Frostrup.
Coppertunes You're spot on, she did marry Jobbers however having seen both BBD & Skids in full flight in this era I think we can forgive a little possible "nepotism" - PS. MF is a f**king bit wooden in this interview and that's UNFORGIVABLE ;-)
Bonus point for rock trivia ✅
God, this is the earliest I've ever seen Mariella Frostrup on video.

@@sophiafakevirus-ro8cc He supplements the sound !

That Flaming Desire ep....amazing
The Master of telling stories :-)

TOP NOTCH BILL
Yep, it is his and it's called Maid In Heaven (off Futurama - Be Bops' 2nd album)
Whoa... Bill plays tuned percussion! (marimba?) Cool little studio too, sometimes it's nice to have everything close at hand.
Yeah I was pleasantly surprised to him take up the mallets - very impressed!
In the interview His producing A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS SHOULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP..they were FAMOUS AT THE TIME.
The world's greatest Yorkshireman!
The First song is "Maid in Heaven"
What is the name of the song he is doing it sounds familiar but I can't place it
Cocteau's 'Beauty and the beast' or ' La Belle et La Bette' was a good film version of the 18th century tale.

the first song he's playing, is that an actual song of his? If yes, what's it called?
I can't believe how wooden Mariella was here. Robotic and emotionless. She's so much more natural these days.
I thought she seemed charming and beautifully spoken. I didn't know who it was until you pointed out her name.
Jeez! Is that a Yamaha cs70m??? They are rarer than rocking horse poo!!! But what a machine.
sorry, i meant the one that starts at 1:47
I was thinking the same thing it must be from one of his "black albums" but I can't find it

Hopefully this link will help to fill-in the blanks since 1983 ua-cam.com/video/oq94dFB1B2w/v-deo.html. It was all there even then....
He looks abit like Micheal Shannon.
Not sure whose hair is blonder, the knock out
interviewer or Bill's!
She was Hot
He never mentions he was copying the Yellow magic orchestra at this time.
