This is probably the best "In the life of" video I've seen. The rest are usually just montages of people eating in their offices, and opening an editor and mashing their keyboards. This was actually very insightful and entertaining. You never fail to amaze us Jake!
I know right?!
True
ha exactly. 'I get up at 5am , meditate, go for a run, drink a juice.' yeah yeah yeah
ehm do i need to remind you Jake's vlog at (i believe it was) Grace timelapsing himself eating a big fat donut or the countless times he was having cereals with milk in front of his desk lol 😂
A day in the life of AKA look how cool my life is, aren’t you jealous?
An actual "in the life of" video with more content than eating!
Why does so many of those videos showcase their lunch
@@offjvlone8969 hahah I Don't get it either dude, because software is all about the lunch.... Thats all I do just eat, no code no meetings just eat.
Omg!! 😂 it’s all about the snacks
This is the kind of content Monzo should be producing themselves for marketing and attracting talent.
^^ I actually thought originally this was something Monzo had told him to do - I certainly would. It's fascinating for a wannabe businessman like me to see the behind the scenes of a new age company like Monzo
monzo will have known about, approved and probably had some say over the final edit of this video
@@roach5219 Yep, employees working in a big tech firm would definitely need permission from management to walk around with a camera like he did. NDAs are no joke.
@@anne-luciebugain5298 he probably got paid to film it.
This video goes on to show a very important point - Software engineering is not equal to just coding. It is about human interactions to come to a decision and then execute that decision (of which a part is coding other part may be documentation or operations)
The MOST REALISTIC "day in the life of a software engineer" I have seen (this is coming from a VP of Software Engineering). Kudos to you and the team!
Most of the others are lifestyle videos and not informative
No way man! I remember watching your Cambridge vlogs years ago! It's awesome to see you working for such an awesome app, I love their technology. Best of luck mate
I work for a “classic” bank in the UK on backend databases, have to say it’s crazy to see the culture difference. The bank are tying to build fancy workspaces and give everyone 4K ultra wide monitors and fancy laptops but ultimately they just don’t understand that it’s the culture that has to change not just the buildings looking nice. We have about 20 layers of red tape to wade through just to change the smallest elements, they always blame this on regulators but clearly this isn’t the case, and the company is just bogged down in the weight of bureaucracy.
In that case, it's up to the younger generation, when they become the managers, to start the change.
Same here, and yeah - people create these barriers, not regulators. Regulators only care if theres evidence of the process and the underlying audit teail for actions you take.
This is a typical problem with large organisations. It's less about regulators and red tape; it's just the nature of trying to organise thousands of people to work together toward a common goal without creating a new world war. Without the rules you end up with chaos, with too many rules nothing gets done because no one wants to go through all of them.
Really enjoy this Jake, I'm a university student myself studying in Computer Science, and a very frequent user of Monzo, I really like what the company are doing and providing. I'd love to see more videos in this series, keep it up man :)
This is one of the best in the Life of a Developer videos I've ever watched! Great job mate, keep it up! Loved how you emphasize on the actual work environment experience bits rather than the overrated free food and fun activities unlike everyone else.
This is awesome. I love how it’s Monday and you turn up to work in a T-shirt. It’s also really insightful as I can actually see how your day progresses. The office environment seems pretty chill too. I’m going on placement as a Comp Sci student very soon and I’ve been pondering on what to expect in a typical developer job. This has really helped.
Love this! Best week in the life of a developer that I've seen. Thank you for taking the time.
Thanks Jake. It's nice to see how things happen as a Software engineer in various work settings. Great vlog!
Oh, welcome back, Jake! It's always a pleasure to watch Jake Wright's videos. Keep doing what you're doing and keep us informed :P
It's so weird to see how far you've come to where you are today. I still rmb watching ur weekly Cambridge vlogs, traveling overseas, starting out work to quitting Graze and now here just casually being tech lead in Monzo😂
This vlog was incredibly interesting. I love your enthusiasm, even at a year later. That's a good thing. I was really happy to see that you have a view at your desk. Why to go!
This was a great video, I really miss you content. Glad to see you happy and content!!
Loved this video Jake, and your 12 minute HTML, CSS and JS videos years ago are still be recommended now as I'm learning coding as a newbie. More content!
I found this video really interesting, Jake. It looks like you have a relaxed but very modern work setting, which I found very appealing. Looking forward to the next part of this series! :)
Nice content, I’ve been working in Nubank for more than 4 years as a Backend Engineer too and it’s great to see the similarities between two companies. Thanks for share your day and congrats for the amazing product you are building at Monzo!
Hi Jake,
Great video! Could you perhaps do a video in which you talk about the technologies you're using at Monzo? For example Docker, Kubernetes, Programming languages..
heyy it's great that you're back! loved the vlog, look forward to the next ones :)
Glad to see you’re doing well!
3 years experience and you're a tech lead already?! 🤯😍😭👏👏👏
He has a CS degree, he can easily do that.
@@DanielDogeanu It's actually pretty unusual.
Depending on how big the company is and position, 3 years being a tech lead is impressive.
Not sure if UK standards differ from US requirements
@@DanielDogeanu In fairness, a CS degree for the most part is a minimum requirement for roles (or equivalent experience). A degree within industry isn't anything particularly impressive. You usually earn lead status through time served and/or skillset. For example, a guy without a degree who has 5 years experience will always gain a lead role over a fresh graduate. Experience is king.
@@TedsteryHD No it's not especially in startups. I had a CS degree and after 2 years I was leading a team and started interviewing many candidates. In startups it's pretty common if you're performing well.
Another vlog from Jake! We've been blessed
I miss them
Welcome back, Jake! I learned programing your 12 minutes videos and my younger brother is watching them these days.
Nice!
This is one of the best in technical quality I have ever seen.
Hey Jake great content. Very interesting insight - thanks for that tech-work experience in london.
Omg I absolutely loved this video. Can’t wait to watch the rest ❤️❤️
Really cool series! Can’t wait for part two! (Getting tempted to apply 😇)
Wait.
You're THE Tech Lead?
I thought Tech Lead was the Tech Lead.
I don't understand.
I understand the reference
me too
The Tech Lead is gay.
@@SemGabelko ok boomer
@@DavidWoodMusic WTF? how even.... nevermind. I guess it's your only vocabulary. Which is impressive for you brain though.
Liked it before even watching 5 secs coz I know it will be wonderful. Thanks Jake for uploading and making our day wonderful .
I’m having a wobble at work at the moment and this video has given me a kick to get back into it, cheers 👍🏻
Really love this content! So glad I bumped into it!
Wow. This vlog contains so much of positive vibes. I am now highly motivated and proud of the field I am pursuing right now.
I enjoyed it. Especially the more mundane parts. It’s interesting to see what people in different roles and countries do day to day. I work remotely from home or in a co working space, so it’s interesting seeing a more regular office set up. I’m also a massive fan of Monzo.
the date was 2019 - 03 - 04 my birthday. Awesome video. Just getting the scene of what it's like hearing conversations at a development company is worth my wild!
Nice work. This vlog really gave me an insight and really enjoyed watching it, especially saying I’m currently at uni studying programming! Can’t wait to see more.. :)
Great video, Jake! Looking forward to watching #2 :)
Great to finally see how your life is going nowadays. I missed that. Good luck!
Really interesting video. I’ve been with Monzo for a few years and it’s great to see a peek behind the scenes. I look forward to the next ep 👍
Monzo seems like a really cool place to work, especially with how fast it's growing.
Great video man! It's crazy how fast Monzo (or Mondo for the OG's) has grown! I remember attending the first event at their office just behind Liverpool St to get my card and now multiple offices and loads of people!
Really enjoyed your video! I work in the Vegas office, can't wait to visit the office in London one day!
That’s such a cool job, great to see it from the inside!
There's something calming about this video
So far you make the most interesting vlog for software engineer job. 👍🏼 I very like your video, real, euthentic.
So much details in this video I love it.. well done fam
Nice video! Seeing the building takes me back to when Bloomberg used to be there. Looks like it hardly changed!
Keep up the awesome work Jake!!!
Such a cool vid, keep em coming!
Just switched to Monzo a few weeks ago, the system was SO smooth! It’s funny how when I buy graze or use Monzo I think of you, knowing all these were created by real people each with wonderful experiences just makes my heart warmer :)
I've been using Monzo since it was in beta so it's great to see how far it's come.
As a product owner for a fintech in the lending world this provides a fascinating insight into how other companies operate. Great work!
I've been watching you for few years. Last month I started working for a start-up in London. We have a office in a coworking space (Huckletree) literally across the road on Finsbury square. Funny how life works :D
When did you start your coding journey or are you a CS grad like Jake ?
Jake, the only thing that is boring is when you don't post. For us mere mortals it's great to see a Cambridge graduate in action. You and Ted Loveday are legends.
And, "yes", I did design this yinyang symbol myself using Visual Basic. I can even make that bad boy spin if need be. Let me know if you want to meet in a dodgy alley in the backstreets of London and I'll bluetooth over the app in return for a "fast track approved" platinum Monzo account.
You've grown so much. And it's been a long time since u r detached from UA-cam upload( 1 month) 😍
Really enjoyed the vid Jake. Thanks.
Its not blring at all jake. U better start making more like these i mean no one minds watching a day in working at monzo. Plz film more such days. We really loved this video
Great Video! So cool to see you working at a company whose services I use literally every day!
More of these please!!
Loving it! Thanks for sharing!
I've been using Monzo since 2017 and love it. looking forward to the day I can move my savings, ISA and credit card away from HSBC.
Thanks I enjoyed that. I used to be a developer way back in the 1990's and 2000's for a huge UK bank. One of the things I worked on was calculating the interest rates for individual loans. It's actually more complex than most people realise as so many factors are looked at.
that was super cool! thank you for all the little insights!
Dude, awesome job you have there! I'm also a backender and love design and architecture discussions. You also look like you are close with your colleagues and you have fun while working!
1 year later...
Really enjoyed this video! Please keep it up.
I work at a startup, 5 mins walk from Monzo. I have that same trudge to Moorgate Station along Moorgate and that rush hour Northern Line - I feel you brother 😔
I'm starting uni soon so I haven't even had a job before, and I don't know if I'll have to submit myself to a crushing 9 to 5 plus a commute
You are all so god damn young ahha. Keep up the good work man.
6:18 - the most important slack channel, the one where you're sharing pictures of dogs
Watched this the other day and I've since watched all of this guy's vids, amazing :) (and yes I have a full time job and I probably need a hobby/life :D)
Super interesting. Keep ‘em coming
That was amazing! Thank you!
Finally an informative "in the life of" video 📹
Thanks Jake, I really appreciate the insight. I'll be looking for a software engineering job shortly, this video makes some aspects of finding a job less daunting :)
Hi Haydo, if you're looking in the UK, I have a couple of entry level roles :)
@@dan_rad Hi Daniel, thanks for taking the time to message! Unfortunately, I'm about as far from the UK as one can get, I live in New Zealand. Best of luck filling your position and thanks again for the invite to apply :)
Keep the content coming!
I knew I recognised the scenery at the start of the video. Used to get off there to go to work up towards St Pauls. Good part of town
Love the enthusiasm. I carry on coding when I get home. You ever thought of doing your own thing?
Good video 😀 also nice to see the new monzo office much nicer than the old one
Your vlogs are always awesome and informatives, i have just learned so many things from your vlogs,,
Keep going bro😁😁
You never give me heart
You're doing amazing, sweetie!
As always, very interesting Jake...…..you speak so clearly...….by the way I loved Bingo he looks so playful! Walt in Miami
It would feel like Christmas in June if Jake uploads another video in the next 7days. A gift that keeps giving😍😭
I honestly loved this :P
I still remember your learn html in 10 minutes video years ago
loved this video !!!
Monza are on my shortlist of banks to apply for once graduating with my MBA, thanks for reaffirming my choice. Great video
More motivation to study hard on my programming and networking
This is the best in the life video I have seen and bonus you're British!
Love this!
Been using monzo since moving to the UK and loving it. Keep up with he good work.
Nice that they let you vlog in the office! Very interesting. How much AI are you using already to come up with the decisions?
I don't know why I found this entertaining but, it was! I used to work in a startup environment - I miss it :(
Hey @Jake Write. Nice Video. If you don't mind sharing, what other pieces of productivity software you use at work and why do you use them? Loved using Notion so far!
Thanks for turning my lights on :P It was a little dark in here
very underrated comment
Love this! I used to work at Nutmeg in London so a lot of this is familiar. And it makes me miss London! I’ll be sending to the Backend guys at Nutmeg! Ha. Nice work.
Are you still working at Monzo? It would be interesting to see a video about how the lockdown has affected the way people are working. Thank you for your excellent videos.
Awesome video. Welcome back to the land of UA-cam Jake!
Having discovered that you're now a tech lead, I kind of want to see you do a collaboration of some sort with TechLead from the TechLead channel :)
Love it, keep it up
thank you, sir!
