The optical quality was better at 400mm unless I stopped down the native lens to 1 stop darker, however the AF was so bad compared to how it would be on DLSR phase system it was useless in the field.
I don't know if this applies to the 60-600 mm, but I have a 150-600 mm Sports and actually, it is possible to zoom in or out just by pulling or pushing the lens hood (also recommended by Sigma). This is much better than turning the zoom ring.

I know this is years after the video was posted, but I'm hoping to get an answer anyway. I have a chance to get this used in the $1200 range. Is that worth it over the RF 100-500, which is more than twice as much? I already have the R6 and the EF-RF adapter. I'm not sure if they autofocus can keep up with erratic movement as well as native RF glass can. Thanks!
I'm really curious if someone can answer this for me. I will try to word this as best as possible: How does the 60-600 perform, just at 150-600? I'm debating on the 150-600Sport or the 60-600Sport. If these lenses are equivalent from 150-600, then Hallelujah, the 60-149 range is a nice bonus. However, if the 150-600Sport is the better performer, I'll forego the extra range for the sharpest of the 2. Thoughts?
My dad worked at night during the Christmas season assembling bikes for Kiddie City. He got us a go-kart one year for Christmas with his discount. Kiddie City was the best!
I have the 150-600 Sport , it is a stunning lens, great images but the weight is a big issue. I have to do a lot of upper body work just to be able to hold the thing handheld. With a monopod etc for what I paid with the 1.4x it was a steal.
I'm really pleased with my Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens taking hand-held photos with a NIkon D5 at 1/400th second, ISO 6400 or 8000, of musicians on a theater stage shot from the balcony. It would be nice to be able to zoom back all the way to 60, but the extra weight of the lens (4.5 pounds vs 6 pounds) would be a considerable problem, especially if the image quality is degraded at 60.
This one is the sharpest of them all with the tamron in this equation being the G1 as I read charts from Lenstip.com as you can yourself if you dont trust me :P
I am wondering the same. Do I add this in my discussion possibly. Yes the extra 60mm to 150mm/200mm may be nice but at potentially as much as double the Sigma C cost. Tamron g2, Sigma C or Sport, or Nikon 20mm-500mm going on a d5600 what would you all go with? Thanks.
@ Jared: For the stiff zoom, check the lens manual. If it's like the Sigma 150-600mm Sport, it's certified you can grab the front element and push/ pull to zoom. And the shape of the front element is great for that.
I shoot Canon (5D Mark ii). I bought the Sigma 50-500mm back in 2012 for $1900 Canadian funds. I swear by this lens and have used it for everything, including shooting video at full range.
Can you use the front of the lens as a "pump system" (like on the first or second version of the 80-200mm f2.8 Nikkor) for zooming on these lenses ? it should be very convenient with this kind of zoom range especially on the 60-600mm ! Would you advise me these lenses (mostly the 60-600mm) or the Nikon 200-400mm f4 for wildlife and sports photo ? thanks in advance !
Well, I only got *Canon 5D (Classic) and EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III* (non IS, non-USM). This kit costs about $300, but look what's possible with it: ua-cam.com/video/-KKjf-Y88Kc/v-deo.html
Sold my 150-600C for this. I use it to shoot my sons sports/ rugby and football. Haven't had a chance to try it yet but looking forward to it this coming season.
Great review Jarad - Sounds like a great lens.... I'm just wondering at what point in the zoom range does the fringing that was so evident in your shots at 60mm go away? If this lens gives really clean sharp images at 80 or 100 mm than it would be well worth spending the money once my old 150-500 Sigma finally dies....
I bought the 150-600 c version for c100 mkii to film nature at 60 fps. I will need a polizier for it as my base iso is 800 clog and shutter 120. I will keep it at f8 as this is best for sharpness in all ranges
To overcome the zooming difficulty, I discovered that it was much easier and faster to pull and push the front part of the lens (i.e. pulling or pushing the mounted lens hood).
I just got the 150-600 mm. It is so sharp. zooming no problem. I do use auto ISO. My photo buddy Bill wants to get that lens. Thanks Jared. You do photography nice.
I wonder if this work well for airshows, the review of the 150-600 contemporary did pretty good, this as a sports lens should focus faster is the weight of the lens a problem.
I'd love to see you compare the classic Bigma 50-500 OS HSM and this lens. The Bigmas just keeps getting larger. 86mm filter thread to 95mm now to 105mm.
I have the 200-500 and it's a fantastic lens...it has a better aperture on the long end and stays constant throughout the range. The shots he showed on the wide-end of the Sigma weren't that great. I'd sooner carry a second lens for the wider shots.
Thanks Jared, fully appreciate your honesty about the results at 60mm. Most would just cover it up. I love wildlife and aviation so this lens would be great for my needs. All the best Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧📸📷
minisla you and me, not often, 'cause we buy it for the 600mm. I really don't care of the 60. It's lighter than the S. my question is: is it better IRL than the S @600 ? the 200-500? yes-no.
@@jcphenix1 Not sure I would buy this lens. Other capable lenses on the market and why have sigma produced a lens that performs so badly at the wider end.
Hey Jared, I bought one of these and within 30 minutes the Auto Focus crapped out. I had to return it but I have to say the $2K for me would have been worth it. I miss it so much even though I only held it for about an hour. When contacting the vendor they had never heard of the problem and called it a fluke but over time I found 3 instances on B&H reviews that had the same problem. For whatever reason the AF just died. I used it on my Canon 80d and the pics were amazing. Just felt I should warn folks if they are on the fence. I so wish I could bring myself to buy it over but I am scared to take a $2K chance. Since your video have you or anyone else run into this? Thanks Tom
The good news is that Sigma claims to have fixed the autofocus problem with a firmware update. The bad news is that you can't install it with their dock, and have to have done by a "qualified repairer". Newer samples of the lenses (as of about the 2nd week of June, 2019) have the newer firmware.
@@froknowsphoto Yes the lens hood, mine moves pretty easily . I am going to San Diego in March would you recommend using this lens with the 7D Mk II to photograph whales ?
I feel like some people might be turned away from this lens because of the way so many people doing video's about it talk about the weight, like "If you don't have arms like mine" talk. When I was 62 years old, 165 lbs. three years ago, I hiked 11 1/2 miles in the Great Smoky Mountains NP with this lens on a D500 along with my backpack with my D850 and 2 wide angle lenses, filters, tripod, other accessories and snacks & water. Just want to say, don't let that kind of talk turn you away from this lens, it's the best I've had.
I'll stick with my Nikon 200-500mm. I haven't taken it to a Zoo yet so thank you for the idea. Might go to the Oakland Zoo as SF one is too depressing.
on APS-C Canon bodies the Sigma "C" 150-600mm = 240-960mm, it's Pin sharp both ends and lighter than 60-600mm. Weather sealing, pointless as rain=clouds=low light, V bad for slow zooms as high ISO=loss of sharpness usually and bad cropped images, add that to most wildlife hides when its raining so why pay for weather sealing. I went for Sigma f4 24-105 "A", Sigma 150-600mm "C" plus 1.4x T.C. My legs fill in for the missing 100+mm. Other options spend tens of thousands on long focal length standard lenses which are faster and weather sealed and still end up cropping. My most bang for bucks was all pin sharp Sigma; 10-20mm f3.5 EX, 50mm f1.4 "A", 105mm f2.8 Macro EX (best out there), 24-105mm f4 "A", 150-600mm "C". I have the latest Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC USD which has to be the worst lens I have ever used, slow, 200mm+ out of focus blurred images, PANTS!!!
I bought the Contemporary and regretted not getting the Sport on my 5D Mark IV, but at the time it was all I could afford. A year later I bought the Sport version with the intention of selling the Contemporary. Glad I did not sell my Contemporary, because I sold my Sport version, only lost $50. The Sport version is awesome , great lens but I could not see any difference. The C is a bit faster focus on the Mark IV and lighter. Either one of these lens are sharp and excellent quality.
Anyone knows if sigma will release a 150-600 DG DN for E-Mount native mirrorless?. I was asking you because every time I see Sigma are renewing their lenses for new versions optimized for mirrorless and that is exactly what this sigma 150-600 needs, an example is what did with with 85, reducing size and made it sharper twice, that's my hope with 150-600 or even a 200-800 it would be so amazing, but without canon adapter in the middle that's pretty annoying. So who should I ask who knows?

Is the 150-600mm lighter? I already find my 70-300mm and 24-105mm a touch heavy (do not have your muscles). My main lenses are EF-Ms that are quite light.
Thanks so much Jared for doing this review. Frankly every review I've seen of this lens, even those that were lukewarm, are showing sample images that I personally like better than those from the 150-600 lenses. I've even heard people comparing it favorably to the Canon 100-400 L II in that focal range, which is really saying something. Like you said, for those really wanting 600mm (or even further equivalent on APS-C) , are pleased with the IQ, can live with the slower aperture and DON'T want to drop like $12 grand...it makes allot of sense. The built in arca swiss plate and lighter construction is much welcomed as well.
I don't know whether to believe over third party lenses or spend some more bucks and buy the company desired one. Like I'm a Nikon user and I'll prefer for the 200-500mm offered by Nikon with FTZ on my Z6. As there are no such telephoto lenses available with Z mount.

I will try to word this as best as possible:
How does the 60-600 perform, just at 150-600?
I'm debating on the 150-600Sport or the 60-600Sport. If these lenses are equivalent from 150-600, then Hallelujah, the 60-149 range is a nice bonus. However, if the 150-600Sport is the better performer, I'll forego the extra range for the sharpest of the 2.
Thoughts?
I've had the 150-600 C for 3 or 4 years and I'm seriously thinking of upgrading to the 60-600 for use on my R3
Update, I took delivery of my copy of this lens today HEAVY looking forward to using it
i hope there is a sigma 70-200mm sports video
What's the point of making a 60-600mm lens if it looks terrible at 60mm?
My dad worked at night during the Christmas season assembling bikes for Kiddie City. He got us a go-kart one year for Christmas with his discount. Kiddie City was the best!
60-600 as the 150-600. has push pull system aswell so you dont have to spin the ring you can just push it and pull via the hood
Which you shouldn't because it will damage the gears and other parts of the zoom mechanism.
@@McClane6666 nope its designed to its says in the manual
At what point did the fringing stop? 100mm? Thanks! great review.
Wanna know which one has the best sharpness
This sig 60 600 or the Tam & sigma 150 600
Or Nikon 200 500
There is a rubber ring for added grip
I shoot Canon (5D Mark ii). I bought the Sigma 50-500mm back in 2012 for $1900 Canadian funds. I swear by this lens and have used it for everything, including shooting video at full range.
Got my first Transformer at Kiddy City in Downingtown, Pa
Remember buying 2600 games at Kiddie City. I'm trying to remember exactly where it was, maybe at KoP.
The zoo is depressing
hi, great review. You mentioned purple fringing at 60mm...did you notice at which focal length the fringing stopped? Many thanks
And now give me one for E mount.
Reldies Which will give additional 1000$ for existing price of 2000$ ;)
I just got this lens and the mc-11 adapter. Works beautifully. Yes an e-mount version would be better but hey!
enzodiac2 How's the autofocus continuous work in video? What camera do you have?
Fuck yeah, I'm sick of getting 0 budget telephoto for e mount, im mot paying 2.5k for their 400
@@enzodiac2 did you use it for sports? is the af fast enough for moving objects even at 500 or 600mm?
3:40 Jared actually says "Horizontal"
Sold my 150-600C for this. I use it to shoot my sons sports/ rugby and football. Haven't had a chance to try it yet but looking forward to it this coming season.
Let me know how you are getting on i'm thinking of doing the same swop!!
You do photography nice.
thank you for your review. I was quite unhappy with its performance at 60mm, so I think I'll keep on using my 150-600 C
Make a comparison video with Nikon 200_500 mm. Plz
200-500 over the Sigam all day.
I have the 200-500 and it's a fantastic lens...it has a better aperture on the long end and stays constant throughout the range. The shots he showed on the wide-end of the Sigma weren't that great. I'd sooner carry a second lens for the wider shots.
I would go with the Nikkor 200-500mm lens.
Thanks Jared, fully appreciate your honesty about the results at 60mm. Most would just cover it up. I love wildlife and aviation so this lens would be great for my needs. All the best Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧📸📷
“I said poop anyway” 😂😂
The only thing bigger than the front element of this Lens is this guys ego.
LMFAO!!! Totally agree.
11:58 "ISO TWO! THOUSAND!" haha i caught that jared.
Hey Jared, great video as always, I was wondering how would the 60-600 work with the Nikon Z6, autofocus with FTZ ?
Great vid! just would 've liked if JP had said something on the sharpness at 600mm vs the 150 to 600...
See in my profile pic?? I already had this lens right when it came out and have thus fare taken so AWESOME shots of the Balled eagle in the wild.
At what point going up from 60 does the fringing go away?
How often would you shoot at 60mm with a lens like this
minisla you and me, not often, 'cause we buy it for the 600mm.
Looks like a fantastic lens, but the f 6.3 doesn't sounds great...
Hey Jared,
I bought one of these and within 30 minutes the Auto Focus crapped out.
You do not have to use the zoom ring Just pull or push near the bottom of lens hood, much like the canon 100-400
the lens hood you mean? That would make it awkward to keep the lens still.
@@froknowsphoto Yes the lens hood, mine moves pretty easily . I am going to San Diego in March would you recommend using this lens with the 7D Mk II to photograph whales ?
Sigma rep at Photokina told me the same, you grab it by the small ridge just behind the hood to pull or push and zoom
does anyone else say the intro when Jared says it ?
@@BrianKushner 😥
nope
Love your reviews keep them coming! They help in making stuff for my channel!
Don't support zoo
Go to a national park instead
on APS-C Canon bodies the Sigma "C" 150-600mm = 240-960mm, it's Pin sharp both ends and lighter than 60-600mm.
I was
asking you because every time I see Sigma are renewing their lenses for
new versions optimized for mirrorless and that is exactly what this
sigma 150-600 needs, an example is what did with with 85, reducing size
and made it sharper twice, that's my hope with 150-600 or even a 200-800
it would be so amazing, but without canon adapter in the middle that's
pretty annoying. So who should I ask who knows?

Interesting. I had such terrible luck with my 150-600 C that I sold it and have been avoiding Sigma since, but this lens looks at least somewhat promising.
HELLO there in the cage you are half a dozen meters away, let's suppose it is at 150, 200 meters, does this lens have the ability to shoot this bird clearly?.tanks for the video.............I ask this question, because I have a 7d and at 70 / 200,2.8 I use a 2x ll duplicator and the photos don't get the detail, nor the sharpness that I wanted because the lens is at 100 meters even with the 7d that is cropped, + and to forget, which lens would you advise me to photograph eagles, falcons, thank you.

Jared changing the subject, I am a canon shooter but was thinking about moving to a Sony a7iii how good is the adapter for EF lenses?
If I had an extra 2g's? Than yes. Great review.
Is the 150-600mm lighter? I already find my 70-300mm and 24-105mm a touch heavy (do not have your muscles). My main lenses are EF-Ms that are quite light.
Do the image stabilization and auto focus work well with Canon mirrorless cameras that have their own IBIS?
Thank you for the review 🙏🏼
Ok where is the comparison?
With pictures and all?
You only say that you prefer the range from 60 to 600 but it is not a comparison.
It's a miracle this video didn't get a strike from Nintendo! Jared showed a cover of a Mario game and even dared himself further to include some sound effects from the game. There must be a Nintendo money truck somewhere, otherwise mere mortals would be sued for this kind of serious infringement.... Ah... Nintendo... On a more serious note, I was expecting some image quality comparison between this and the contemporary option as I found a crazy deal of around $600 for an almost brand new copy.
I have been waiting for this review...I knew that Jared would put this lens through it’s paces and not hold back! Sure it’s a big ol piece of glass but being 6’4” and 300lbs. I am sure I can handle it...and I WILL be getting it!
How does this compare to the 150-600 Sport? Btw, Kiddie City and Babytown on Cottman Ave in the Northeast in the 70s. Those were the major toy stores.
The lens is terrible at 60mm but AMAZING at 600mm. Guess you can't have everything at the $2000 price point.
