hey, just wondering how does this lens compare to the Tamron 150-600mm? Im having issues with its focus, considering purchasing an optomizer to customize it. Love the sigma 100-400mm better, with the teleconverter. Much sharper photos than the tamron. Im disappointed, but thinking maybe Ill give it a go with a monopod, as that lens gets quite heavy.
I bought this lens for my 5d mark iv about a year ago and the images I've gotten have blown me away. No kidding. I do a lot of birding. Last trip out I got a male osprey carrying a fish in it's talons, in the air, handheld, os2 mode, which is one of my fave shots I've ever taken. It's a great lens and at under a grand, it's crazy how good of an investment it makes for your kit.

Sigma 150-600 Contemporary "Real World Review": Thanks for the great review. I bought this lens a couple of months before your review and I agree with your opinions, except for one. At the 7 minute point you talk about the difficulty in zooming from 150 to 600 by turning the zoom ring. Solution- use the lens body's push/pull feature. I found this is much faster. Keep doing what you do and 'Shoot Raw'.

Hey, Jared. I really appreciated the review you gave on the Sigma 150-600mm lenses. I just retired and I've got free time to go out with my camera again. I keep teeter-tottering between the Tamron & the Sigma. I think that for the price, I'm leaning toward the Sigma. All your illustrations were a big help in making my decision. I've enjoyed all your reviews and demonstrations over the years, as well. Keep up the good work!
Had this lens for a few months now and love it. It's worth getting the Sigma usb dock so you can change the stabilisation to Dynamic, much more effective than the factory setting. Thanks for the review.
This review is hands down the best. Bought this for my wife for Christmas. She's so excited to get out and shoot after seeing this, and learned alot. I will have to buy another so we don't have to share! Thanks for this video!
Really REALLY great review! Thank you for choosing the most entertaining -- even exciting -- environment I have EVER seen for any lens review! AWE inspiring in every way - Great review! If they had Emmys for UA-cam, you would win big with this one. Thank you!
I´ve got this one and I absolutely love it! I agree, it´s purely a nice-weather-lens and really shouldn´t be used indoors. Also it´s not as superduper sharp as a 12k$ lens but as you´ve said: one is able to get the desired shot. This is the best review of this lens that I´ve seen so far Jared (and I´ve watched many before I decided to buy it)! Thank you :)
I just purchased this lens and I have to say I’m surprised by it. A lot easier to handle and great sharpness. I had a canon 500mm f/4 but couldn’t handle it due to arthritis in my hands but this lens is a good replacement for me. I am very satisfied with the images it produces. But one you’ll enjoy it
@ 9:08 i was like wtf for a second there, a pan of a bunch of ppl taking pictures and all of a sudden right in the center a freaking giant among them ...he's just on a bench lol
At 18:00, speaking about AF: "...7D is consumer body...". When this video was released 7D Mark 2 had the best AF system in Canon world. Only 1DX had the same AF system.
I've owned this lens over 2 years now and take thousands of shots and it blows me away how good it si for such a cheap price. I have a very good copy, and it's sharp wide open at 600mm, so I don't have to stop down to f/8 like some people say they do. The cameras this lens absolutely rocks on are the 5D4, 1DX and 1DXII. The focus is very fast on these cameras especially the 1 series and I've used for very fast action with great success. Sure AF is not as good as the Canon superteles, but it's 10% or less of the price of the 500/600 f/4. I'd love them to do an updated version that fixes a few things, like the skinny focus ring, a bit more powerful and faster AF motor, a lock button that allows you to lock at any FL and a better hood that secures more firmly. Other than though I think it's the best zoom supertele out there for the money other than the Nikon 200-500.
@JOSHUA STUBBS 7dmk2 is a good camera, but my gh5 can probably take it for everything. The gh5 is about the same price. The d500 is also a better camera for a little more money. If you are already invested in canon, look at the 1dxmkl or 5dmklll
I think this class of lens has came a long way. The 150-500 OS was ok. The 50-500 OS was pretty good (not as good as my 100-400 mk1 though which wasn't my best lens) but the new 150-600 looks epic. Might be adding that to my bag for my 7D classic for birds and such
as always your passion for photography shows, great vid Jared and you didn't hide behind specs you took it out and brought home the proof that its a great lens keep it up.
The Sigma 150-500mm is my bird and airshow lens. With my full frame Nikon D610 or my APS size D7000, I get great shots. I am always amazed at how well the image stabilization works. This lens is best in full sunlight. In dim light, you will need a tripod and a stationary or slow moving subject. This is my only non-Nikkor lens, and is one of my favorite lenses. If you think you might want one, just buy it. You will not be disappointed.
You're downplaying how good the 7Dm2 is by calling it a consumer camera. It's a proper PRO body. The guy next to you probably can afford the 1DX and he's using the 7dm2.. there's a good reason behind that. I'd use the 7dm2 over 5dm3 for that air show any time. The only better body for that would be the 1DX IF you can fill the frame, of course. Thanks for a great video & greets from Croatia.
+Steve K Um, yeah, I know, what's your point? Maybe you misread my message or didn't get the point. He knows why he used it, I know it too, I commented on something else.
My point is: the guy next to him is using a 7dii over a 1dx because of the extra reach, not because it is a better body. 7dii is the best crop body Canon offers....just my opinion. I have a 7dii and I like it especially for sports but my 6d kicks it's ass in low light...
The funny thing is that I was literally standing a few people away from you at that show. I wish I was watching your video’s back then, would have been cool to shoot with you. One of the hardest airshows to shoot, but one of my favorites to go to every year.
Excellent review. Means even more, coming from a professional photographer who doesn't ordinarily like super zooms :) So anxious to get out and start putting it through its paces on my new R5 :)
Great Video Jared. A little to add that this lens could actually zoom using push-pull action, which makes it way quicker than other manufacture's new mega zooms.
+Jared Polin Yes, I loved that review, also one of your best,, But how does the contemporary version compare? AF speed and sharpness? Thanks again Jared,
+redauwg911 I know it's not a real world comparison, lab tests have shown that the C lens is almost identically as sharp in the center of the frame as the sport, with the sport holding a bit more sharpness at the center. the sport also has less pronounced vignetting, though it does have some. As for focusing speeds, my roommate has the sport and i have the C lens. his focuses a butt hair faster on his d810 than mine does on my d750. OS seems to be pretty much the same. we've gotten tac sharp images of still subjects hand holding at 1/80th.
Sigma 150-600 owner here, and I can say it truly is a beast on an APS-C body. But what Jared didn't say is that it can be adapted successfully to work even with a micro 4/3 sensor, giving you 1200mm of reach, or 1320mm for the GH4 when shooting 4K video. And the lens is very sharp and has great optics even zoomed all the way.
Ha, ha, Jared. I don't expect you to know everything, but those prop planes are certainly not flying 500-600 mph. Very few WWII propeller aircraft can reach those speeds and they also have to be in a dive.
Per the Rain man, about 500 miles and hour. Sounds about right to me and I work on planes. A jet? A thousand miles and hour. Oh, and I noticed that the props were frozen. I never for a minute was worried that the prop planes would fall out of the sky.
p51 could reach around 400 possibly 450 (using WEP). Modded with certain parts from today, the p51 could reach 500. In a dive, not modded, could EASILY reach 500.
I've been shooting with this lens for a year and a half with good results. After watching your video, I learned 3 new tips I never knew about my lens that should improve it's use even further. Thank you!
M.C. Grigg males are the typical white and gray that most people think of. The darker black and gray are females. With birds the females are usually darker and not as interesting to look at because it helps them hide and protect their nest.
Thanks I have now got the lens and I am blown away how good it is for the price, I have it on my Canon 90D and I can shoot low shutter speeds that I wasn’t able to before handheld.
Thanks Jared - I've watched several of your Real World reviews. I have been looking at this lens, and appreciate you doing a review for both full frame and crop. That helps alot, and keeps it true Real World. Thanks for thinking of us non-professionals who hobby shoot but don't have full frame gear!
If the games are at night and most are you need a faster lens. The least expensive and probably the most popular is the 70-200 f2.8 with image stabilization.
Fro knows his stuff so as the video shows it would be a great lens for distance as long as there is enough light. At night even under the lights to get good pics you need f2.8 lens and in some cases an f4 w/image stabilization if the lighting is really good.
I tried this one and the Tamron and my wife and I both agreed that using the Canon 100-400 and 300 + 1.4x (with a slight crop) was a much better set of lenses to use. Yes I microadjusted each lens and the quality just wasn't there. We used Canon 6D, 80D and 5DsR.
If you are very rich you will have a very big garden so if you wonna take a picture of your kids ,you need at least a 600mm lens to see them lateron in the final picture.
There actually is a P51 that goes over 550mph lol so ya its a thing :D, and Jared was more or less making a point, that its harder to shoot high speed objects, which isn't easy to shoot, I mean imagine if he was trying to get a shot of a baldface hornet at full speed, that's a pain in the arse lol and they've been clocked at 90+ O.o.... lolz
Jared, after a couple of months of comparing the Tamron vs Sigma 150-600 it was this review that convinced me to go with the Sigma contemporary. Not only are your clips informative but you are very entertaining.
I have the Sigma 150mm - 500mm f5 - f6.3, for Nikon. I use a Nikon D610 full frame camera. The lens is about 5 years old and cost about $900. I absolutely love the lens. Autofocus is not fast, but it does not hunt, and is accurate. The VR is fantastic. I always hand hold, and pictures are very sharp. Color is great, and I don't see any chromatic aberration (purple fringe). If you want a long lens and are on a budget, this is a great lens. All my other lenses are fairly expensive Nikor lenses, but not top of the line. I have a Nikor 24mm - 120mm f4 VR2, instead of the more expensive Nikor 24mm - 70mm f2.8 VR, as much for weight as for price. This Sigma 150 - 600 looks to be great as well. Very good review.
Great video. Been looking at this lense for months. I do a ton of wildlife photography. I believe you just sold me new glass. And earned a subscriber. You are the Bob Ross of Photography. Looking forward to more!
I mostly do concerts in small clubs, but I have been thinking about this lens for quite a while. I know that it won't benefit me at a gig, but I like the idea to get more flexibility when outside. Also, the price is obviously also an advantage. I rarely shoot outside which would mean that it would be stupid for me to spend too much money on such a lens. So, thanks for the review! It is definitely food for thought for me!
The only filter that might be needed is a polarizer. Reflective glare from the water and other surfaces is something you can't really fix in post, or just isn't worth the time fixing in post. UV filters are just a waste. If kids with greasy fingers are mucking up your camera/lens, then you just pack away your camera and clean it later. That happens with or with out a filter. Unless you carry multiple filters all the time.
I picked mine up yesterday. It is so much more impressive than I thought it would be! There were a few reviews on here that make me think it might not be.
I've been planning on getting the 150-600mm for a long time, however I was not sure if it would be worth it. This video is honestly the best video that I've seen and I've made up my mind that I am going to buy this lens.
I got to test the Sigma 150-600 C for free this past weekend. I rented a Canon 100-400 II to try out and went to a bird sanctuary in High Island, TX. When I arrived Sigma had a tent set up near the entrance and would let you try any of their zoom lenses for free. Even the 300-800 and the$6000 500mm f4 prime! I took a few pictures with the 500 for fun but only really tested the 150-600 C seeing as how it was the one I thought I'd purchase if I got one. After coming back home and looking in light room I was stunned at the quality of my pictures on the Sigma! I got more keepers from it than I did from the Canon. I thought the colors were better with more contrast as well. Both were amazing and super sharp! (although not as sharp as that 500mm!!!) I consistently get super sharp pictures at 600mm on my 7D mkII. I was so impressed I went a picked one up yesterday. I'm heading to get more birds this weekend again.
Watched this a while ago, finally pulled the trigger last week. So far, I'm impressed. The OS is awesome. Much better than my Canon 100-400, but then it's 20 years old.

That feels like the most American thing to say tbh
Guy is really enjoying that scratch at 4:16 behind Jared.
i have never seen a black seagull
+M.C. Grigg It was a Juvenile Herring Gull
+M.C. Grigg remember, black lives matter...lol
M.C. Grigg males are the typical white and gray that most people think of. The darker black and gray are females. With birds the females are usually darker and not as interesting to look at because it helps them hide and protect their nest.
You racist
Using this lens on a 7D2 in 2022, still one of the best options to reach out to 600mm on a Canon for a budget
8:35 Remember when snapchat videos used to be 10 seconds long lol
Thanks I have now got the lens and I am blown away how good it is for the price, I have it on my Canon 90D and I can shoot low shutter speeds that I wasn’t able to before handheld.
9:08 - off camera "give me your lens" stance lol
Thanks Jared - I've watched several of your Real World reviews. I have been looking at this lens, and appreciate you doing a review for both full frame and crop. That helps alot, and keeps it true Real World. Thanks for thinking of us non-professionals who hobby shoot but don't have full frame gear!
very well done .
still your fun videos style but professionally executed
Thank you
Thanks for the review, the Blue Angel shots turned out awesome!
for football shooting should i get the sports or the contemporary version?
Luke Sperring thanks!!
If the games are at night and most are you need a faster lens. The least expensive and probably the most popular is the 70-200 f2.8 with image stabilization.
Gene Herrera even for soccer/football matches ? i mean for the long distances
We used Canon 6D, 80D and 5DsR.
who's here in 2021?
Hah you're so outdated. Who's current and here in 2024 like me

Awesome review!! I wish Sigma would make this lens for the Sony Alpha mount!! And that fluorescent dude's 600mm is a BEAST!
Doesn't it suck to be locked in to that one hair style for the rest of your youtube photo personality career?
Great vids, BTW. :)
It'd be funny if he went bald
Thanks for the OS2 hint !!!
You need 600mm for kids who are playing in the garden or backyard???????? hahahahahahahahahahah
Well, maybe if you wanted to take photos of your neighbour's kids :s
Or having a very big garden/backyard hahahah
I love how he said "You're probably gonna be shooting kids in your backyard". Maybe reword that a little bit? "Taking pictures of" maybe?
If you are very rich you will have a very big garden so if you wonna take a picture of your kids ,you need at least a 600mm lens to see them lateron in the final picture.
Damn straight, if the kids are out the back playing, don't interrupt them, take photo's from a distance.....
Would you still recommend this lens in 2021?
Does anyone else find Jared annoyingly negative most of the time?
I find him really honest most of the time. If it's crap, it's crap.
i think he also trolls a lot
Impressive detail on the 600mm shots. I have the Sigma 70-200mm OS HSM f2.8 and have not been disappointed.
dam , i realy need to save mony to get some of this lens !
I dig the photos. I love anything with a Mustang flying in it. Good video for me since I am considering the Sport version of this lens too.
500-600 mph wtf, those maybe fly half of that
yes xD looks like his hair takes away alot of ability to think
The shot of the blues solo 5 with the vapor he was over 650 MPH
P51 Mustangs averaged 430mph stock, and with todays tech and modifying, I can see 500+ easy on a P51, so no he wasn't pulling shit out his arse lolz.
ikr. Sphoxros at least you and I know what he was on about. I could see totally see 500 mph on the 51.
14:23 wtf is outside the window
Underatade comment
looks like a small tram on an elevated railway.
Momin Khan its one of those planes with the banner on the end,?
so much hair. my son comitted suicide earlier this year over his male pattern baldness. u r so blessed to have your hair.
Heheheh 5.36 if you remove the lens cap your camera works alot better. :P
So odd you waited over 6 months to publish this review, this could have helped me 4 months ago... regardless thanks anyways...
Filters are a waste of money
That's just not true. A 10 dollar filter could be the difference between getting a rock through your lens or replacing a filter.
and the 10 dollar filter will most certainly decrease image quality
+Alin Mihalcea I've had my lens saved from the greasy fingers of little kids more than once by my filter.
That`s not a filter, that`s just a protective glass. There`s a difference...
Based on ur review, plunged into day and got the biggest lenses I've ever had. Supper happy with my test shoots from today.
I picked mine up yesterday. It is so much more impressive than I thought it would be! There were a few reviews on here that make me think it might not be.
Jared, very live review, not boring to listen!
This guy is good. ..both in tech presentation, thinking while shooting...the works. Kudos, bub.
Watched this a while ago, finally pulled the trigger last week. So far, I'm impressed. The OS is awesome. Much better than my Canon 100-400, but then it's 20 years old.
Thanks for making the RAW files available. I checked them in LR and bought this lens
