I remember watching this back in '81, and it has stuck with me all these years "Personally I think the Country is going down the dumper anyway" not only funny, but eerily prescient! Thanks for sharing it!!!
"Tonight is my final broadcast, and I would like to add one personal note, for God sakes knock off that tickety tickety tickety sound!" "19 years of tickety tickety!"
i simply loved it when Johnny Carson (as Walter Cronkite) imitated both Porky Pig from 02:56 to 03:02 and Woody Woodpecker at 05:43. Walter Cronkite was perhaps THE news anchor of all weeknight network television news anchors - a weeknight network television news anchor without peer. it is unfortunate that there have been no weeknight network television news anchors exhibiting the gravitas like either Walter Cronkite or Edward R. Murrow over the last nine years plus. The year 2005 will be THE most pivotal year for weeknight network television newscasts as it truly heralded the end of an era. it is no wonder why Walter Cronkite was truly known as 'the most trusted man in America.'
Johnny Carson was mostly before my time as was Walter Cronkite. But watching recordings of both the tonight show and Walter Cronkite, they were undoubtedly the best in their respective fields. Rest in peace Mr Carson, and Mr Cronkite.
Jonny was so good at sketch comedy. This country needs more great hilarious sketch comedy in prime time. No I do not mean Saturday night live as it is now.
I would imagine Walter had a sense of humor. I think he knew that Johnny was paying respect to his work as a news anchor and journalist. Johnny also pointed out the annoying aspects of what we see... people in the background typing out stories, sounds of typewriters as the news anchor is talking. Also, the notion that Walter was deliberately talking an acting in a dignified way to "follow orders" and because it was his last newscast, he was going to defy some of those orders. Johnny admired Mel Blanc and had him on whenever he could. At the start of one interview, Johnny demonstrates his Porky Pig to Mel, likely to get approval, and Mel responds "a -b-b-b-b-b"... pretty close! That must've made Johnny feel very good... not to mention that Jack Benny was also there... Johnny was like a kid in a candy store, and it was the best day ever.
Didn't like all of his role playing, but this combo of skill, flattery, respect and smarts is hard to beat. It's been over 30 years since first done and it's still fresh.
Gosh. I lived being entertained daily by SO MANY greats, one could hardly count them all on TV, movies, sports, music... there were dozens of truly GREAT people in every field!!! Now, we have a couple in each area...maybe. And I realize how blessed I was to live those times! It makes me think with entertainment today being what it's dropped down to... well, no wonder that it's gone down the crapper! I miss them all- Abraham, Martin & John, too!
I was hoping he'd say what was on those desk papers. The punch lines could have been endless. "For 19 years you've all been wondering..." " _Nothing,_ they're _blank._ I just read the teleprompter, you idiots..."
@@frankgarrett9500 Exactly. Every American president has been skewered by late-night comics. Cult45 is just like its Dear Leader: thin-skinned beyond belief…champing at the bit to dish out scurrilous attacks, lies and smears of others but singularly unable to tolerate an iota of criticism.
both Walter Cronkite and Johnny Carson are before my time as I grew up in the 1980's and 1990's but I watched recorded clips of both Johnny Carson and Walter Cronkite and I feel both were among the best in their respective professions. they are both missed.
Walter Cronkite is buried just a couple of blocks down the street from where I live. (He really is!) If the CBS Evening News or any other main stream media is on television in my home, I can hear Walter spinning in his grave...
I remember seeing this on the original broadcast, and reading the news article describing filming it, with Johnny not throwing the chair through the picture of Dan Rather during the rehearsal.
Walter was the only guest I ever saw who refused to move from the first seat down to the sofa when the next guest came out. I forget who the next guest was but that very awkward moment was handled by the new guest with style and he never made a scene.
Steve Allen was the big innovator. He set the standard that Johnny and Dave Letterman imitated and improved on. But if you want to see the original, Steve Allen is your guy.
Born in November of 1981, just months after this sketch originally aired! Yet, I still had the privilege of seeing Mr. Carson during his last decade on NBC. THE EDGE OF WETNESS was one of my all time favorite sketches, just seeing audience members getting used like that always killed me! 🇵🇷🇺🇸🤣😎
I guess my question about the rate Walter Cronkite spoke on TV then also goes with the rate at which Johnny Carson spoke during his time on the air. Are today's broadcasters talking faster now, not just with the news but on regular programs and commercials as well?
Years ago radio announcers were trained to speak slowly and enunciate because of spotty AM reception in rural areas. Also, most folks didn't get TV's or FM radio until the 1950's. Walter Cronkite and his peers maintained their slow pace and didn't mess with fake news and celebrity gossip.
I'll bet Walter Cronkite got a huge laugh from this when he was able to see it. Give him credit - Walter was a hard-core liberal (listen to his radio commentaries sometime) but on tv he played it right down the middle - tell the facts, no opinions. Today newscasts are 60% opinion.
"What is a Braud doing in the newsroom? Why don't you go home and bake some brownies." Sexiest af lol. Would never fly in today's snowflake society. If Johnny was alive and did this exact bit on his show tonight he would be cancelled.
The bit at 3:32 about telling kids to stick their finger in a socket sure wouldn't go over well today. I bet lawsuits would be filed before the sketch was even finished!
For God's sakes, knock off that tickety tickety! 19 years of tickety tickety!
Still hilarious 40 years later!
No one could make people laugh on late night TV better than Johnny could. He was indeed KIng of late night TV.
This was the reason WHY Johnny was crowned "The King Of Late Night." R.I.P Johnny.
“And that’s the way I was, March 6, 1981. This is Walter Cronkite saying (Woody Woodpecker laugh) heh heh heh HEH heh!”
"What is a broad doing in a newsroom? This ain't the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Why don't you go home and bake some brownies!" Priceless!!!
The undisputed King of late night
Shame I was a small kid growing up in the later years of Carson. Pure comedy gold that I now appreciate to this day.
This is masterfully done. I never see Johnny playing a character; he almost always loses himself in the role.
I remember watching this back in '81, and it has stuck with me all these years "Personally I think the Country is going down the dumper anyway" not only funny, but eerily prescient! Thanks for sharing it!!!
Yes!!!!! Johnny knew but couldn't totally say it all the time
Hilarious! Don't remember this, but I remember watching Cronkite every week night. Johnny nailed it.
The most UNDER rated comedian of all time. Was a great mimic. Unlike what we have today. Certain groups have lowered the bar. HOW SAD.
"And when your half in the bag, the world's problems don't seem that important."
lol
Yes!!! Johnny Carson was hysterical
He had that Saturday night live spirit
"Tonight is my final broadcast, and I would like to add one personal note, for God sakes knock off that tickety tickety tickety sound!"
"19 years of tickety tickety!"

Great comparison except johnny was hysterical
Walter brought us the news for decades. Jonny made us laugh the same.

We lost late night when we lost Johnny.
I know he was almost 80, but I still think we lost Johnny way too soon
He smoked. They all did.
@Marta: And? He lived three years beyond the average life expectancy for his demographic (white male). So, what's your point?
Considering the man smoked like a train, it’s amazing he made it to 79.
I loved this skit when it originally ran. FINALLY I get to watch it again. ^_^
Jonny was so good at sketch comedy. This country needs more great hilarious sketch comedy in prime time. No I do not mean Saturday night live as it is now.
His sketches were hysterical ironwood, Reagan, Oliver north etc.....
Ironfoot
Best late night skit ever. To whoever uploaded this I owe you a fruit basket for Xmas.
For god sake knock off the tickity tickity tickity. LOL 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I always thought he should've said this is Walter Cronkite saying kiss my ass
God I miss Johnny Carson.
Johnny was really great! I miss him too.
Me too. He was a funny guy
a trick : you can watch movies on Flixzone. Been using it for watching loads of movies lately.
@Raul Zeke yup, I have been using flixzone for months myself :)
@Raul Zeke yea, I have been watching on flixzone for months myself :D
I'd love to see a video of Walter Cronkite's reaction upon seeing this for the first time. I can't imagine him not laughing at least once or twice.

He may well have given Johnny half the material for it
This was hysterical.
👍👍👍👍👍 talent never ages.
I remember the night this aired. True comedy art
This is classic! I never watched much of Johnny (it was on too late for me) but he was a funny guy.
Some people are wondering if Mr. Cronkite may have been offended. Personally, I think he gave half the material for the skit to Johnny! :-)
When Cronkite was a guest on Carson not long after retiring, he and Carson watched the clip together, and he took it in good stride.
THE BEST PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!! FIVE STARS!!!!
Havent seen this since it aired. Just as funny as it was the first time.
Didn't like all of his role playing, but this combo of skill, flattery, respect and smarts is hard to beat. It's been over 30 years since first done and it's still fresh.
I love it when he unbuttons his shirt.
My favorite celebrity of all time

This is one of the funniest skits Carson ever did on the Tonight Show.
In tears laughing at my third straight Carson video, this is another classic!!!!!
When Jane Pauley was young she looked exactly like an actress playing a newscaster.
I love this skit.
Top notch 👌love it real comedy
Love em both
Johnny Carson, Walter Cronkite, and Don Rickles are all in heaven now.
For god's sake, knock off that dang Tickety Tickety tickety
I have to believe Walter Cronkite had to enjoy this immensely
That was beautiful. Remember when late night TV was funny and not a bunch of clowns?
Now late-nite is all about"impeach Trump".These clowns don't have a clue about impeachment porcedures.
How true..Nobody knows actual Funny anymore..no class in the world
Yes, we mustn't criticize the Holy Lord God Trump®, because MAGGOT.... I mean MAGA!

So darn funny. Loved Johhny and Walter!
Johnny was at his best when his monologues failed,, but this is really funny too. Thanks for posting.
A classic sketch!

Cronkite was a blowhard.
R.I.P. Walter Cronkite, Johnny Carson
Still funny after all these years.
The Gold Standard of Late Night.
I wonder if Cronkite ever saw this and what he thought of it.
just watched him on johnny carson and he laughed watching it.
And that's the way it is.
More or less
Walter was the only guest I ever saw who refused to move from the first seat down to the sofa when the next guest came out. I forget who the next guest was but that very awkward moment was handled by the new guest with style and he never made a scene.

I wish we had journalist like Walter Cronkite and Andy Rooney today. But instead we get The View
Wonder what Walter thought when he saw this?
Only to have Dan Rather ignominiously fired...
I was among the horrified when Roger Mudd's obvious succession was supplanted by Dan Rather's. We were all like "Who ordered this?"
Johnny said "tough shoot"? can he say that on t.v.? thank you for posting this sir.
By the way, I have no rights or claims to this video, so NBC will probably tell me to take it down. Watch it while you can.
Like if you're watching in 2017.
6 years going, I hope you're doing well.
Still here in 2020

The news did have the tickets, tickety.
Good clean humor!

u tell em walter.
I know Water got a kick out of this sketch.
18 minutes of missing tape from Watergate. Hahaha 😆
5:42 Woody Woodpecker
I love it! The 18 minutes of missing tape of Watergate. Hillary a Watergate girl. Isn't that special
"I have cleavage too!"
The only thing better would be taking a chair to the real, National Guard memo faker, Rather.
Love go bake some cookies
"For God's sakes, knock off that dickety dickety dickety sound!"
5:41
That's why baby boomers are alive today
You know, that sounds like the announcer from Network. “The UBS Evening News with Howard Beale.”
I'm embued. A 50 share ... easy. I'm mad as hell.

Was there anyone Johnny couldn't play?

Johnny's gone, so instead they'll go after whoever posted this video on youtube, or maybe youtube itself
wtf are kids up at 11:30 watching Johnny Carson, anyway
what were they gonna do fire him?
He forgot his sandwich.
Dan Rather sucked.
😅😅
omg.."knock off that dickity dickity dickity" As ED cackles in the background. Americas sleeping pill for 30 years. wow..

Not funny
