Thanks for your comment - glad to hear you managed to change your wing! The wheel arches were generally painted black. On my red 280SL which was stolen, someone had painted them red (the chassis colour - it looked OK but was not correct) Mike

You should probably remove the engine as well and do a complete "rust bath" restoration of the front section in classic Mike's Mercs fashion, making everything look like new or better than new.
Happy New Year to you! Once again, you are quite right, the sensible thing would be to remove both wings, whip out the engine and do the whole thing properly. My plan originally was to cut my teeth on the 450SL project....and then move on to the silver SL once I was a little more experienced with welding and fabrication. However as 2020 has taught us, plans change, so who knows where this current SL will lead me. Mike
Mike. How did you manage to fit non original wings onto the car. I have some reproduction wings and they will not fit at all. The distances between the fixing holes near the door are not the same as the original. Any advice?
Sorry to hear you are having problems fitting repro wings. What is the make model and year of your car?....and where did you get the wings? The reason for asking is that the shape of the wing may have changed slightly...I found this when trying to fit the headlights to my now stolen 280SL. I must confess that the new wings I had fitted to that 280SL were fitted by a body shop and not by me...but they never said they had any problems. Mike

Hey Mike. I was thinking about removing my passenger side wing but I was looking around it and there is like three inches of weld at the front on top where the cross bar goes to the other fender wing. Do you know what I’m talking about? I wish I could show pictures of it now.

Hello Kelly, are you referring to the D Jet ECU? If you have a 350 SL, you have one that controls the injectors and one that controls the ignition (actually, it is merely a "switch"). I have the same car and can gladly advise you on what to do.

@@jonm1066 Hi - if you have a look at this video (ua-cam.com/video/hQGic5k2vBw/v-deo.html) it shows how the bumpers are made up. There is no plastic and I suppose you could in theory remove the chrome - but the bumper would look pretty weird with it. Are you asking because you have an SL and want to mod it...or areyou asking just out of interest? Mike

Yes - it is a very common (if not expensive) mod that many owners of US cars do.....then they switch the front headlights to euro spec. Mike
