  • This is a detailed video showing how I removed the dash board on an 1983 Mercedes R107 280SL. In this particular case, someone had attempted to change the underside of the dash from Cream to Black by painting it in situ with the wrong type of paint and primers. The video shows how to correct the paint work and address the minor rust issues on the underside of the dash.

My understanding is that I have to remove the dash to access the two vacuum switches that control the air conditioning flap. They are located in the heat box. Looking at this video, I understand better how I could get there, but it looks like a lot of works for someone like me.

Thanks for your comment. Taking out the dash is a lot of work and a daunting job...but you will get a great sense of satisfaction if you manage it. See also:

I’ve taken my dashboard out a couple of times on an ‘87 560sl. It’s a chore. But can be done with patience. Just pay attention as you remove the thing. Reinstalling the dash is a little more difficult. Again, be patient.

Yes...it is easy to get frustrated and end up scratching something or cracking the wood trim. Mike

Hi, I have a question about the glove box light. Mine is a similar setup to yours but the torch part is missing on mine therefore I would say it’s removable. Are they all removable or are some fixed. ( the acculux ones) I have a friend where he cannot slide the torch / light out....

Hi Mike. Great video. I think I need to remove my dash to sort out my wipers. Have you got any videos or advice about swapping out the wiper linkage. Thanks simon

Hello Simon - sorry to read you have a problem with your wipers. I have not (as yet) done a video on the subject but seem to remember that once the dash is out, the wiper mechanism is dead easy to get to. What is the EXACT problem? Mike

Thanks for the prompt reply Mike. It’s quite a long story. The wipers seized up over a year ago and I took it to local garage. They removed the glove compartment and then didn’t want to do the job of taking the full dash out to replace the wiper mechanism I’ve bought a replacement mechanism from SL shop which cost £1000 The garage then left the car outside for about a year. I didn’t realise as I focused on other things and in that time the brakes and seized up and the fuel pump failed so I’ve just had those things sorted out so we’re back on the road now so I’m just turning my attention to the wipers. Another local garage have said they can have a go at the dash but they can’t quote because they don’t know how long it’s going to take them so I was just doing some research and your video is really helpful. I’m just wondering how long you would estimate a garage that hadn’t done this kind of work before might take to do it the other thing is that I can actually hear the motor running And I think it must be disconnected from the wiper mechanism and I’m wondering whether that’s possible to do without removing the dash through the glove compartment so any thoughts on the above would be really appreciated thank you.

I’d love to think I could do it myself, but with work and family et cetera just can’t see how I’d find the time and I’d get so far and then the car would be off the road until someone else put it back together again. I would imagine.

Mike! I am in a process of getting a donor dash for my 1973 450sl. I am stopped cold at budging the dash off the air vents off the wind screen. are there any screws holding it there? I don't see one beside the central horizontal screw which I removed already. Am I missing something? Any ideas?

Thanks for your email and sorry to hear that you are having a problem. I have a 1975 450SL parts car and I'll take a look next time Im in the garage just to make sure there are no additional screws. It dash is stuck where the vents meet the windscreen, it occurs to me that maybe in the past somebody has bonded the windscreen in and some of the adhesive has stuck down the dash. Could try a hairdryer but BE CAREFUL not to crack the windscreen. What coulor dash are you looking for and what country are you in? Mike

How do you remove the climate control panel on a Euro 1981 280SL r107? This panel has two round switches with recirculating switch in middle and two temperature control wheels above. I cannot find any fasteners on face of panel. How do I remove it to refinish the wood?

There are a couple of videos on this channel relating to the removal and installation of that panel:
      ua-cam.com/video/9wKrfMkBFvY/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/sVOlAq7t3aY/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/RnPu0w2r6cs/v-deo.html
The knobs and sliders pull off. You have to VERY carefully prise out the plastic channels for the climate sliders and the are two screws hidden below. Undo those screws and panel should tilt forward…..connected by a bunch of wire for the switch’s and panel lights. Mike
