    That pawn on d4 was an isolated pawn weakness, but we didn’t realize it wasn’t just a physical weakness… As soon as Hikaru took the pawn, Vidit was so overcome with sadness that he threw his king right on Hikaru’s sword! Emotional weaknesses cannot be underestimated.

    Back when I was a kid, my chess teacher explained us that if you meet a king you should bow. However, if two kings meet and both bow, they will headbutt eachother. Thus, they can never be next to each other.

    In the Japanese variant of chess, called Shogi, capturing the king is an option.
    On a separate note, I had a case in a tournament where I had been in check for about 3 or 4 moves and neither of us realised it.

      @@Alexander-mh5ov I don't remember. All I really remember about the game was that moment. I was thinking about my move when I noticed something and asked other player "how long has that bishop been there?", he said "about 3 or 4 moves, why?", "I'm in check." Since it would've been too difficult to try to backtrack the moves, we decided to play on, so I addressed the check.

    One of the best things about Levy's commentary is that he always acknowledges certain moves/lines are better for weaker players and others only really apply when you are strong enough to fully understand the position.

    Capturing kings is how I first taught my kids to play. When I tried explaining check, it was just frustrating telling them that a move they wanted to make, that seemed to make sense, was illegal. So instead we just played a few games where they could play that move and lose. Then checks made a lot more sense to them.

      Beyond beginner level, an essential aspect of the game's rules is that a player who isn't in check can never be obligated to move into check, and someone who would force an opponent to move into check does not get credit for a win.

    I agree with what you said in the beginning. No checkmate, just capture the king makes more sense and relies more on someone's ability to see what's going on. Would be especially useful in low-rated games.

    I have to give Levy credit for being a great storyteller. The humans are all about stories in contrast to the robots like Stockfish.
