    We just played through a Watkins tape echo back in the mid 60s to mid 70s, still have and use my Watkins today, good old analogue echo.

    I agree, Brian. I run my zoom g2 1nu with Charlie's patches through an old Watkins Dominator amp turned up high to get those valves (tubes) really working and get lovely Shadows' sounds. The missing factor, as with everybody else, is of course, Hank's fingers!

    In the 60s I used a Klempt Echolette ! I think it had at least 5 heads, but don't quote me on that! One thing that I do remember was making sure to carry spare looped tapes! I learnt the hard way, when the tape broke mid-show! Things may be different these days, but when you are doing Shadows songs, you just had to have tape delay of some sort! It was the time!

    The trick with Hank Marvin's sound is the Meazzi Echo which is basically a drum coated in iron oxide, spinning and the signal hits 4 tape heads creating the multi tap, rhythmic sound. Catalinbread has a pedal that does this called the Echorec. The Boss RE20 Space Echo is another unit that mimics the multi-tap sound of multiple heads. With the cost of 2 delays you could just by an Echorec or the Space Echo and save yourself the headache of trying to use 2 delay pedals.

    • @EdVanMeyer

      The Meazzi Hank first used was a Tape one and had a Halo effect, The Binson was a drum unit. Vox later sold the Meazzi in the UK with their name on it.

    Two delay units definitely is a must for the sound heard in palm muted pieces like in Apache, Atlantis and Wonderful Land, whether this effect is done through MIDI, digital pedals or analog amps. However what I found useful for the normal sound is using one delay unit set offbeat, and use a reverb unit with pre-delay set longer than 0.5 seconds and a lot off decay while not cutting any lows or mids for the sake of ambience. If possible, boost the high-mid frequencies to get more warmth in the sound. It's pretty fun experimenting with the sound yourself, in example using the reverb before the delay effect gets you completely different echo effects. If you have the knowledge and equipment, using a Digital Audio Workstation can greatly help you get an insight in what effects to use without having to go out and buy expensive hardware. I use my low powered practice amp, wire it through my studio computer through line-in and send it to my '81 Pioneer amp.

    The key it to use a delay unit that has some sort of 'Gain' volume control as you need that to drive the sound, most pedals don't have that 'lift' and often the signal is reduced not boosted. Also, studio reverb was added at Abbey road where they had an echo chamber they blended in to the dry sound.

    Allan Raymond, well done. Sure we'd all love to have tape echoes & echo chambers but for the majority of guitarists, that's unrealistic. Great effort on getting it pretty close with the 2 Boss DD's. Having the right guitar & amp also helps as well, btw U forgot to show your amp. ;)

    its not a bad sound, quite pleasant. It isnt that "hank'sound but I have been to a few Shadows clubs and vaery rarely does anyone get the sound spot on because its basically impossible to sound exactly the same as Hank. The Zoom G2 is a good cheap alternative and produces a nice sound with the right amp. The Alesis Q2 is good if you are going to be in a band and can afford it. Personally I use the G2 with a Vox amp and I'm pretty happy with the sound I get nowadays

  • @eddyghys
    @eddyghys 14 років тому

    I use the"atlantis guitar echo", made in Belgium, specially to get the Shadows sound. It was not cheap (approx € 1000,00) but it's very easy to use. Built in are 7 echo- chambers: Watkins copycat, Vox Domino,Vox long tom, Meazzi PA 304, Binson Baby Echo,Binson Export, Binson Echorec 2. For most of the Shadows songs, you only have to change the selection knob (1-12) In the manual is a list of nearly all the Shadows hits + wich of the 12 selections to choose.
    As I said: very easy !!!

    With a single Yamaha pedal Magicstomp, and patches of EFTP (Charlie Hal)l, you can get the real echoes of Hank Marvin (with "bounces"that are his signature). On this pedal, thirty programs can instantly get the right settings. Cost: about $ 200 with EFTP

    @kapailunch2 to be honest I think you would have to get the list of setting from someone or check the settings against another EFTP 508, There is no special program on them or anything so sophisticated it is just programmed to a close sound using the available parameters. I used to have them written out but since no longer using the 508
    I no longer needed them and gave them to a local fellow Shadmad guitarist who has since passed away a couple of years ago. Sorry that I couldn't be more help

      Don't laugh,but I have spent £60 on TWO Behringer dr400's,and linked up,they are great for this ripple effect...don't know how they would stand up to stage use.....well I DO..if it was me that used them on stage ,cos I treat all my gear with the utmost respect!
      I still have the guitar lead which was supplied to me when I bought my Fender Custom Shop Strat,in 1978,and it has never had a new plug to be fitted,and hangs straight as a die!!
      My Strat and Vox AC30 are as new...after 41 years!
      SO,for bedroom or home studio use,these delay pedals do the job,AND they have Reverb,and Tap-Tempo built in.
      Of course,if you can afford them,go for the Boss units ,I agree with you Al!!

    This is not bad at all. But since the 60's , I always used 2 Echocord (Tube/tape delay) And I have the Hank sound. When I said that 2 or 3 years ago on a Shadows Yahoo group, everybody was laughing at me. But I was and I am still right. 2 Echo delays. One for the reverb and one for the echo (Repetiotions. Never more than 2 repetitions) Altalantis is great, but not build anymore! I also use a Zoom RFX2000 + a Spring reverb.To reproduce Abbey Road sound. And a custom Strat

    Very nice, well explained - but: to get the REAL HM sound you will have to put on heavy gauge strings with a wound "g" string - in those days ('50s & '60s) there was no such thing like rock 'n roll light or extra light gauge strings, so get a set of 12s roundwounds and tell me the news...and don't forget to adjust the vibrato (or tremolo)

      Correct,mate,but old age comes with Arthritic fingers,that cannot bend 12's like they did in 1959-on,so it has to be 9's,which sound a lot thinner,but we have to accept that which life throws at us,and if we canna bend a 12,then it has to be a 9!!..and just enjoy what we have left of life!![and THAT'S one thing that all of us are gonna face....it's just a matter of time!!]....keep picking y'all!

    Zoom Rfx 2000, Zoom RFX 2200, Alesis Q2 -Q20, Watkins tape Echo.
    Any of the above will help you get the right Echo for that "Hank Sound"
    but I'm sorry you will never get it using fixed rate pedals where you a number of repeats and a speed control because alot of the shadows echoes have gaps in the Echo, Example:- Apache echo would look like... X X X with a space

    I have a Fender Mustang 2 Amp and I can get the sound of the Vox AC30 but that don't quite get it either. I also use a Boss DD7 and a Compressor. I have read all sorts of instructions and interviews and its like some of these guitar players won't share anything with you cause they're afraid you're gonna steal it or something. Even Hank Marvin himself tells how he got his sound on You Tube. He used an Echo and Delay and I'm sure some of the things have changed over the years. I've only had one guy email me and tell me exactly how he got Hank Marvin's sound and I've lost it since then otherwise I would be more than glad to share it with everybody that is interested. If anybody has the answer on how to get Hank Marvin's sound would you please share it with me?

    • @ablwhitfield5537
      @ablwhitfield5537 8 років тому

      +Rj Jones - His sound was always analogue echo, now programmed into a digital unit. There are multiple echo sounds, and guitars, and string gauges [go heavy 11-49 will help, hit hard with a pointed pick] , using 9's is useless. Hank uses different guitars on stage for different tunes , one will be 10-46. but it doesn't matter. Whatever amps, guitars, and effects you have, no-one can play, just like Hank. Get a sound you like, and just enjoy playing

      I have played one of Hank's guitars. He has 3 for his stage work, uses nothing less than 10's, and heavier for songs like Apache. You may disagree, but I'm in the business, and have first hand knowledge, from his tech. Listen to the old recordings on cd with headphones.

    • @highpitwilma
      @highpitwilma 5 років тому

      @@ablwhitfield5537 Spot-on mate,I have to use 9's cos of arthritis in my hands,but my advice is also to get as near as you can afford and just enjoy it....but the Vox is an important part of Hank's sound,I use an original AC30 TOP BOOST REVERB..[TBR..1980-s],also a Vox D.A.C.9 watt solid state..[about £90 a few years ago..],a very rare Vox A.C.1..[1 watt...and fits in your pocket!],and the little Vox A.C.30 Amplug,which is a micro-amp,with built in effects such as reverb,delay,overdrive,chorus,and tremelo.
      These little amps cost about £30 or so,and have a great sound in your headphones,with an Aux [line-in] input so you can play along to backing tracks from your M.P.3 player,or like me,use an old Minidisc player to which I have recorded Goran Tangrin's great backing tracks.I also have had first-hand advice from meeting Hank at various times.
      These days,no-one needs to struggle with no gear like I had to do in 1959..when decent gear,even a Futurama 3,was too expensive for me to afford...in 1959...at 15 yrs old,and earning £4-00 a week...before offtakes!!

    Hank uses an Alesis Q20 programmed with Echoes From The Past by Charlie Hall. Much simpler and more accurate to get a Zoom RFX2000 or Alesis Quad with EFTP. If you can find a Q20 and have about £800 to spare thats the thing to get. Also has the wow & flutter built in. The taps on this set up are wrong...

    SERIOUSLY YOU NEED A BENSON ECHO UNIT TO CLOSELY SOUND LIKE THE GREATEST GUITAR GROUP "THE SHADOWS" of ENGLAND.

    Actually the Meazzi Echomatic 1 J had 6 heads, the Echomatic F had 5 heads. The Meazzi/Vox Echomatic 2 had 4 heads. It's all about the heads kids.
